I

n the midwinter of 1988, Peter Sutton and Chris Slotemaker de Bruine were quite possibly the two most impatient men in Australia. And I, for one, do not blame them one iota. Having spent the previous two years developing a proposal, organising vital funding, co-ordinating some mammoth logistics, and planting thousands of bulbs, it was only natural that their impatience had reached its apex – and only moments away from spring’s arrival and the first of the blooms opening to greet Canberra’s particularly aureate sun.

And so, come the first week of spring in 1988, Australia hosted its largest horticultural festival in celebration of Canberra’s seventy-fifth birthday and Australia’s Bicentenary of European settlement. Due to its instant popularity, it returned for another year in 1989, and another in 1990, and not a year has passed without our capital city blossoming alive in a riot of colour and exotic floral specimens. Such were the beginnings of Floriade. Now recognised as the premier horticultural festival in Australia, Floriade is currently celebrating its thirtieth anniversary. But, like most of us, Floriade isn’t willing to celebrate its thirtieth ‘low-key’. Pulling out all stops, the event organisers are using this significant milestone to take stock of Floriade’s three decades of achievements.

From retrospective displays to a heavily rejuvenated event schedule that includes open-air concerts supported by the Canberra Symphony Orchestra, special effects lighting displays, sculpture installations, and … of course … over one million flowers in bloom, the event is being touted to expect record numbers of attendees. In a recent interview with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, Floriade’s Head Gardener of twenty years, Andrew Forster, cannot believe his luck. While last year the event withstood torrential downpours, “everything is doing what it’s told this year”, he said. Since February, more than a million specimens of tulips, daisies, violets, pansies and poppies have been cultivated, enjoying Canberra’s particularly temperate first half of this year.



“Last weekend there seemed to be as many tripods as tulips down by the lake. Two female gardeners were deadheading the banks of poppies and passers-by could not resist chatting and clicking cameras. Dark blue hyacinths filled the air with a heady fragrance from heavy flower spikes. Massed daffodils reflected the sunshine. A river of purple muscari flowed towards jewel-bright anemones which exhibited their name of windflower in the gentle breeze. Moorhens clucked beneath the willows.” – Susan Parsons The Canberra Times, 1988.


And this clemency couldn’t be timelier. Poppies are particularly greedy, tulips need a dry cold, and violets and pansies are mortified by wind – so for many of the event’s horticulturalists, this year’s glorious weather has come as a godsend. After all, never have the floral displays been more ambitious in the event’s history. While many favourites from Floriades-past are being revived – displays replicating DNA strands, pianos, and even living murals celebrating our multicultural communities – this year’s event covers an unprecedentedly larger area than heretofore. But, at the end of the festival, where do all the flowers go? Before they wilt and fade, every viable specimen is harvested from its temporary built-up beds, and distributed to nine nursing homes and hospitals across Canberra. As a running tradition, it is surprising that this initiative rarely receives publicity. For those amongst us who, in their twilight years, are not able to venture out to Floriade, hordes of volunteers ensure that Floriade can come to them. Representing, at every point, Floriade’s intimate connection to community, it is a touching thought to know that at the end of the day, little bits of Floriade continue to spring up all over Canberra.

And yet, we need to remember that while Floriade holds a significant place in our nation’s soul, its importance for our national economy ought not be overlooked. Injecting, on average, an impressive $40 million into the Australian Capital Territory economy across its thirty days, Floriade remains a key tourism driver for the nation’s capital, expecting something close to over half a million visitors this year. According to the event’s organisers, “by consistently growing, changing and adapting, Floriade ensures that it continues to hit a mark with visitors, maintaining its place as Australia’s premier spring celebration.”
