I
spent last week feeling very sorry for myself indeed. Squirreled away in bed trying my darnedest to shirk off the flu, I could only muster exactly enough energy to watch the television. And, not being a watcher of television, it was an odd experience. I discovered that every morning news program requires a blonde weatherwoman with a smile like a mouthful of dominoes. I discovered that thirty minutes into the afternoon is the undisputed hour for cooking shows, 3:30pm for crime dramas, and at 8:30pm everyone (it would seem) is afflicted with the sudden desire to renovate their homes under a ridiculous amount of duress (in which, it is not only right, but entirely expected, that you should have a not-so-discrete tearful conniption at least once every ten minutes).

Needless to say, then, that my stint at becoming a television connoisseur was very short-lived. I flicked between channels aimlessly until, all of a sudden, I happened upon a film where Liza Minnelli twirled about on a bentwood chair in garters and a bowler: Cabaret, Bob Fosse’s award-winning adaptation of Isherwood’s novella. Although purportedly set in Weimar Germany it displayed all the trappings of the early 1970s: Michael York’s floppy feathered fringe, Minnelli’s voguishly overdrawn eyeliner, and a pervading yellowy glow across the film’s stock. Suddenly, it hit me. Perhaps there is some sort of relationship between colour and a particular era. After all, name any 1970s film and I guarantee it bears that same buttery gold luminosity ( The Godfather or The Sting). The late ‘90s and early 2000s tends to be memorialised in avocado green ( Trainspotting or Amelie ), while up until possibly just last year, we found ourselves in the age of mineral blue (think: Gravity and Avatar). Perhaps that was always to be expected. Since blue is generally recognised by colour psychologists to carry associations of tranquillity, calmness and reflection, it promotes physiological responses in us all that slow our heart rate and aid mental clarity. Becoming stylish in the age of mass social upheaval – the age of Trump, Brexit, and an increasingly uncertain geopolitical landscape – it’s little wonder that we crave respite from the helter-skelter through the neuroaesthetic reassurance of blue. “It helps to understand the fundamentals behind why colours shift,” says Andrea Lucena-Orr, Dulux’s Colour Planning and Communications Manager. On the back of creating the 2018 Dulux Colour Forecast with the company’s Creative Director Bree Leech, Andrea’s characteristic larger-picture thinking reminds us all that colour is just as semiotic as it is aesthetic. Determining the Forecast, “we talk about what is on people’s minds, what factors affect where colour is going, and what’s happening from a tech and pigment perspective,” she tells me.

Re-entrenching the meaning of colour back into its very human connection, the 2018 Dulux Colour Forecast projects an aesthetic world of retreat amidst the maelstrom of this climate of global discontent. What’s more, however, it illustrates the impact of cultural history on our current age. Dulux, in consultation with an international braintrust – the Colour Marketing Group – got to the very core of underlying factors shaping the market forces and tastes for colour. And, for 2018, the forecast is looking very fairweather indeed! With a veritable riot of ebullient and calming predictions as their 2018 Colour Forecast, it would seem that the future is (ironically) inspired by the past: vintage design, Palm Springs in the 1980s, Memphis design and Hygge movement. “It’s all about looking back while moving forward,” says Andrea. Comprising four key palettes, each with a very apt name for our current social and political situation, the 2018 Dulux Colour Forecast reflects the growing awareness of a more socially-engaged public. For instance, the Kinship palette (previous) is distinctively warm and takes inspiration form the ‘grassroots’ earthiness of
public-led social initiatives such as the Marriage Equality Plebiscite. Meanwhile, the Essential (above) colour palette reflects the influence of Scandi design, quietude and the influence of raw material, organic imperfections, getting back to basics and balancing our over-connected digital lifestyle with the things that really matter. “It’s about slowing things down and tuning in to the details,” says Andrea. “Things need to be more lived in, with a bit of a story.” And capping it all off are Reflect (opposite) and Escapade (cover) – two collections which wear their love of ‘80s-90s pop, melodrama, fun and just a little bit of humour. Obviously drawing its references from the resurgence of late twentiethcentury design and popular culture, echoes of Miami beachfront homes, neon signs and Madonna video clips, the two themes evoke the design histories of another time, another world.
