HOW TO BUILD A PARK

The Parks and Recreation Department works tirelessly to enhance our community with new parks and renovating existing ones. Discover the journey of building a park step by step.

PLAN

Parks are planned several years in advance as outlined in various plans and studies to include:

• Parks Master Plan

• McKinney’s Comprehensive Plan

• Feasibility studies

• Community and Sta input

ACQUIRE LAND

The average park in McKinney is at least 10 acres of land. The land is acquired by;

• Dedication

• Donation

• Purchase

DETERMINE FUNDING

A neighborhood park in McKinney costs, on average $3,000,000. The money for the park can come from several sources, including:

• Grants

• Bonds

• Parkland Dedication Funds

DESIGN

The design phase of building a park can take 9-12 months. During this phase, the city works with various consultants like:

• Engineers

• Architects

• Landscape Architects

CONSTRUCTION

Once the design is approved and construction begins, it can take 9-24 months to complete the park.

Some of the activities you might see include:

• Field preparation

• Landscape and irrigation

• Concrete trails and shade structures

When residents and visitors shop and dine in McKinney, a half-cent sales tax revenue is reinvested to enhance the community.
