“If you look at my family story, my great grand father and great grandmother were getting out of Lithuania and getting away from the Russians. It’s our story when we see waves of people being dis placed and going to these countries,” Christian said. His sister, Kerry Seacrest, serves as the Lithu anian counsel for Vermont and has traveled to that Eastern European nation frequently since the fighting began. “The people we know are hosting refugees,” Christian explained.
The War in Ukraine is now entering its eighth month and for Christian, it has been unbearable to accept. The owner of Saxtons River Distillery in Brattleboro said his family is originally from Eastern Europe and seeing thousands of Ukrainian refugees in Lithuania who need food, water and shelter cut very deep. For Christian, it’s not just their war, it’s his war as well.
Christian even recalled going to a Vermont summer camp that was run by nuns who were refugees that fled Russia..
Christian said he asked the State of Vermont to boycott all Russian vodka and Russian products, and in alignment with the Governor’s Executive Order, the Department of Liquor and Lottery agreed to stop selling Russian spirits. “What can you do short of American soldiers going over?” he askedTherehimself.wasonly one thing left to do: hold a fundraiser to raise money to help the Ukrainian

refugees. Christian decided to hold a “Night for Ukraine” at Saxtons River Dis tillery on Aug. 25 that featured a compli mentary signature cocktail and Eastern European cuisine. His goal was to raise at least $10,000 and, more importantly, generate some continuous fundraising momentum in Vermont for this cause as long as possible.
“We can help improve some people’s lives. It’s a small piece, but it’s still a piece and it will matter to the people who will benefit from it,” Christian said.
The War in Ukraine has caused unimaginable destruction and loss of life. It has also forced thousands of Ukrainian people to flee to neighboring Eastern European countries, including Lithuania where Saxtons River Distillery owner Christian Stromberg has deep family ties.
“We grew up with stories from the World War II days,” Christian said. He believes the Russians have always posed a threat to its Eastern European neighbors, and he understands why the Ukrainian people are choosing to fight so hard to preserve their freedom. They don’t want to be ruled by Russian President Vladimir Putin. Christian knows that any fundraising they do here in Vermont represents a small portion of what the Ukrainian refugees will need for a long time, even well after the war ends. He realizes the country has been reduced to rubble and millions of people have lost their homes. But doing something feels better than doing nothing.

Tickets were sold for up to $60 per person. An online auction with mini mum bids of $125 for higher-end items began on Aug. 4, and an in-person auction for various items at the event were also held. The money raised was donated to two relief organizations: Blue Yellow-Aid, which provides support to soldiers, volunteers and territorial defense forces fight for the Ukraine’s freedom; and Refugee NGO. The fund raiser’s flyer noted that Kerry traveled to Lithuania in July and would identify the appropriate agency there.

When Zach Thomas’s family decided to ex pand their craft beer store, Fireside Beverage in Ascut ney, to also include Vermont spir its, they didn’t realize they were on the cusp of owning a piece of rock and roll history. They had just purchased an old, aban doned building on Route 5 that used to be the Savage Beast bar. “When we tore down four layers of drywall, we found the backdrop to the stage,” Zach said. It turns out the first ever performance with the current line of Aerosmith was held on that stage in 1971. Their gig at the former Savage Beast marked the first time that Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, Joey Kramer, Tom Hamilton and their new est member Brad Whitford ever played together.Asahuge Aerosmith fan, Zach was in awe. “It was awesome.”

Their decision to expand their product line to include Vermont spirits was not even on their radar. Zach said he has always been a huge craft beer enthusiast.
Before the expansion, Zach said their craft beer and wine products sold extreme ly well during the summer and fall tourism season, but sales would drop off in the win ter and early spring.
The location they purchased had been a rundown, abandoned building that once housed a butcher shop and hair salon. “We ended up taking down the old building and the old foundation and put up a brand new building,” Zach said.

Zach said they wanted to make the move for some time before they purchased the Windsor store. “It was just a matter of being in the right place in the right time.”
“If we’re jumping in, we’re jumping in head first,” Zach said. He said the future may be even brighter because Mount Ascutney, which is current ly open-limited skiing, may soon expand to become a full-service mountain. Mount Sunapee is just 45 minutes away from their store. “I hope it’s true,” Zach said.
While Zach notes that “Vermont is the mecca of craft beer,” he also said that people don’t tend to drink it as much in the winter as they do in the summer when they are enjoying barbecues and other outdoor activities. With the ski crowd not far away at Suna pee, Zach wanted to position his store to capture year-round sales.

Building and maintaining a loyal and local customer fan base is key to enjoying year-round success, Zach said. “I believe in Karma, so while you definitely have the opportunity in this business to price gauge people if you want to, I am dead set against price gauging,” Zach said.
As a consumer, Zach understands what he would pay or would not pay for a prod uct. “The last thing we want to do is be a burden on people’s wallets,” Zach said. “Having trust with your customers is what will keep them coming back.” Now that Fireside Beverage has found its home, Zach plans to stay there for a long time. Like many Vermont fami ly-owned businesses, Zach, 32, would like to see his store passed down to other generations to keep it going. Highclere Castle Gin was originally created at its namesake estate in Hampshire, England — a 5,000-acre estate which has been the country seat of the Earl of Carnarvon since 1679.
