City of Opportunity Young Professionals Choose Manchester to Grow, Succeed By Bill Burke

S

ome pursued careers elsewhere, only to return to Manchester. Others never left. One came from New York, while another found his way to the Queen City from central Africa. A growing community of young professionals has chosen to grow their personal and professional lives in the Greater Manchester area. Whether it’s the convenient location, rewarding volunteer opportunities, the vibrant cultural offerings or the natural networking that occurs in a dynamic city center — or a combination of all of these elements — each has found their way to the city they now call home. However different their road to Greater Manchester was, each of the following young professionals has found something similar upon arriving: a city that is alive with opportunity and surrounded by a community ready to support innovation and business. Born in the central African nation of The Democratic Republic of Congo, Arnold Mikolo, 27, works with the International Institute of New England — an organization that helps resettle refugees — and as translation coordinator at its sister organization, Pinpoint Translation Services. He initially moved to the U.S. in 2012 and lived in New York City, but became intrigued with the idea of moving Northeast after a friend told him about life in New Hampshire. “When I first arrived in America, I was 20 at the time, and I was told that in New Hampshire, you have to drive to get to the grocery store,”

www.manchester-chamber.org

Mikolo says. “It was a scary idea for me because in New York City, everything was literally a block away. Everything was within walking distance. My initial reaction is that it sounded scary — I didn’t drive, I didn’t have a car, and it seemed as if New Hampshire was in the middle of nowhere. But then I did some research.” After taking a closer look at the Granite State, and Manchester, in particular, Mikolo felt he didn’t have a choice but to give the Queen City a chance. “I envisioned myself living in New York City for the rest of my life,” he says. “But the rent was expensive, the apartments and homes were not as big, so I thought I’d come to New Hampshire for six months, maybe find a better job with better pay, save a little bit of money and then go wherever I want. I didn’t have a family, so I figured I’d give it a shot. That was my plan: six months. Now it’s been six years.” What has been the most rewarding part of your professional career in Manchester? “I knew this when I first arrived that if you work hard, you can reap the benefits. But the most rewarding thing is knowing I’m contributing to something bigger than myself. I’m not just working for a paycheck. I’m making my community better.” “As a new American, arriving in Manchester in 2013, I’ve been welcomed as a part of the community. I feel like a person who was born here. The work I’m doing in the community is

not going unseen. Somebody is seeing it, and it’s being rewarded in so many ways.”

pretty incredible.

What do you like best about Manchester? “It’s small enough so that you run into the same people over and over again. You’ll see someone today and then see that same person after two years. People change jobs or where they live, but you end up running into them again. Everyone knows everyone, and as a young professional, that can help your network grow. It can help with job opportunities and professional growth. You have access to people like the mayor, the CEO of the Chamber of Commerce, and in bigger cities that’s not the case.” What do you like to do when you’re not working? “I like to unwind, work out, go rock climbing, kayaking, hiking, socializing. And that’s a big part of it. I’m more of an introvert, so living here allows me to go out and make new friends and connections. Once in a while I’ll get out of New Hampshire and explore Canada or head south. I enjoy being active and exploring new places.” What would you tell other young professionals about Manchester? “Definitely give it some serious thought. It’s not as big as other metropolitan cities, but business and civic leaders are becoming aware of what they need to do to attract more young professionals. They’re doing their best to make it a more welcoming place for all young professionals from all different backgrounds. I don’t just mean race, but different religions, genders — all those things that make a place more attractive.”

There are such great job opportunities and, I think, nine colleges in the city.”

Julia Whitney

Julia Whitney, 27, is the marketing and retention specialist at the Economic Development Office and is Chair of the Manchester Young Professionals Network Advisory Council. Whitney grew up in Hudson, attended Suffolk University in Boston (“I lived all four years, right downtown,” she says) and then took part in a political leadership program in Washington D.C. “I’ve always been proud to be from New Hampshire,” Whitney says, “My parents owned a small business in Manchester, so I graduated and came back. I had a taste of city life in Boston and in D.C., and I was ready to try a new city. I had the opportunity to work on a U.S. Senate campaign and I traveled from Coos County all the way down to the southern part of the state, and I fell back in love with New Hampshire.” What keeps you in Manchester? “It’s the people. We have such an engaged community. Obviously, the Young Professionals Network is super engaged, but there are so many community groups and opportunities for arts and culture. There’s so much pride in our city about the betterment of Manchester. I really enjoy singing its praises.” What do you like best about Manchester? “I’m known to go out to eat a lot. We have many diverse restaurants, especially downtown — my favorites are either Campo Enoteca or The Birch on Elm. I live and work downtown, so I’m always on Elm Street. Every Saturday morning I’m downtown getting a donut or an iced tea at Café la Reine. I love exploring the city. I’m also a runner, so I’ll run on the rail trail for miles. I think one of the best things about Manchester is our vicinity to everything — the mountains,

the ocean, the ability to take day trips around the region. “There’s a better sense of community here. I feel, especially living in the downtown area, the ability to walk to work, get a coffee, get dinner, is important. Then there’s the public art — I can see the mural behind the Palace Theatre, the artistically painted utility boxes — and now that sense of community is expanding further outside the downtown district.” What motivates you to give back to the community? “What our city deserves is for its young professionals to be engaged and involved. We have so many great amenities and opportunities, the least I can do is take everything I’ve learned and the friends I’ve made through the young professional community and help strengthen the city by being a liaison to other young professionals in the area.” What would your message be to other young professionals considering a move to Manchester? “Manchester is pretty incredible. There are such great job opportunities and, I think, nine colleges in the city. There are wonderful shops and restaurants and brand new apartments. Manchester gives you the opportunity to grow professionally as well as personally. There are many organizations you can volunteer for. “It’s a cool feeling to walk down the street and see someone you know on almost every block — whether it’s from your professional career or personally. You don’t have that in a bigger city.”

14 MANCHESTER ADVANTAGE www.manchester-chamber.org

What would you tell other young professionals about Manchester? “This is a really cool place to live where you can feel a good sense of community. You can still do big things on your own and yet be a part of something else. You may see negative things on the news — about the opioid epidemic and issues like that — but there are an incredible amount of people who have a desire to help. They truly love this city, and they’re not going anywhere. “And while there may be an aging population in New Hampshire, it’s great to see people coming to Manchester and staying here. My husband grew up here and went to Manchester public schools. But even if you haven’t grown up here, it’s easy to feel a sense of community when you see what’s going on.” Erica Brooks

Erica Brooks, 31, is a community organizing manager at NeighborWorks Southern New Hampshire. Born in Brooklyn, New York, her road to the Queen City, at first, was taken somewhat reluctantly. “My parents are pastors and we were in upstate New York,” Brooks says. “We moved here to take over a small church. I wanted to stay in New York. I had no desire to move to Manchester.” That is, until she got here. “At first it was tough to get to know people,” she says. “Then I started volunteering at an organization called Roca Kidz Club, and that really helped me to build relationships. You get a really good sense of community once you’re here and get integrated. There are a lot of people with a desire to help and be part of something. For me, that’s when I knew I wanted to stay.” What keeps you here in Manchester? “Manchester does have a bit of a city feel, but it’s still got a really good small town feel at the same time. Everyone knows each other. You can make one connection and then get to know 50 people. Also, we’re close to the beach, which is really beautiful. It sounds cliché, but I really do appreciate that about Manchester.” What do you like to do in your free time? “I volunteer. We do a lot of fun things with the Roca Kidz Club and I like to kayak from a little country-esque spot on the Merrimack River in Hooksett. I love kayaking or canoeing down the Merrimack from that point. We also bike a lot. I also love to travel — it’s a big piece of why I plan to stay in human services. It’s typically all I talk about.” www.manchester-chamber.org

Hillary Rankins, 33, and Paul Gerber, 30, are a married couple — both Greater Manchester area business owners — who recently chose to put down permanent roots by purchasing a home in the city’s North End. Rankins is the owner of The Inside Scoop, a colorful, welcoming, year-round ice cream shop in Bedford that also offers coffee, breakfast and lunch items, and Gerber owns Luxint — a technology integration company that provides custom home theater design, audio, video, home surveillance, commercial automation and electronic enhancements, among other hightech modifications. The two went to high school together and then began their professional lives. Rankins opened The Inside Scoop seven years ago while Gerber started his business out west. “Hill had her ice cream shop and lived in downtown Manchester in the Millyard,” Gerber says. “I was in Arizona where I started my business. We reconnected and I moved back across country and we both lived in the Millyard for two-and-ahalf years or so.” What has been the most rewarding part of your professional career in the Manchester area? Gerber: “Meeting people and forging relationships with clients. We’ve become friends with many clients — we go out to dinner with them, we see them out.” Rankins: “The most rewarding thing for me is also forming relationships with customers. My favorite thing is watching customers come in, whether they’re a little kid or a sports team after a game, and to see them so excited for an ice cream cone. The Inside Scoop is a really happy place and I’m lucky to be surrounded by those people every day.”

How would you describe the environment for young business owners in the Greater Manchester area? Gerber: “It’s great. We didn’t want to leave, which is why we purchased a home here. Hill and I both discussed moving out of state, but then we thought, ‘why move away?’ We decided to look for a bigger place in Manchester’s North End or close to downtown. Being with young professionals and young people makes it easier to network and share ideas.” What would you tell other young professionals about Manchester? Gerber: “I would say that Manchester is still up-and-coming and rejuvenating. We both remember driving by Manchester on the way to the airport and seeing the mill buildings with the broken windows, all spray painted and empty. Now it’s filled by UNH Manchester, Texas Instruments and similar big companies. It’s on the forefront of bettering the city — both small and large businesses. Everybody we know in Manchester and Bedford supports smaller businesses. They’re very supportive of small businesses…” Rankins: “…And we love that.” n

While the NH Department of Transportation regularly keeps track of the condition of both state and municipal bridges, there is no corresponding central database that catalogs the condition of city streets and town roads. However, the process of compiling the data has begun. Chris Dowd, who manages the Statewide Asset Data Exchange System at the Technology Transfer Center at the University of New Hampshire — better known as T2 — said that the process of building a database gathered momentum with a pilot project 2016, and now 20 municipalities undertaken in are participating. t’s a little after dark on a Friday night and at one end of Café la Reine, Big Red is hissing up a storm. At the other end, just inside the door, Alli Seney is strumming her ukulele and providing a harmonious counterpoint to the café’s renowned, well-loved, but soon-to-be replaced bright red espresso machine. Seney, host of Java Jams with Alli Beaudry, is serenading a full house at the Elm Street café, as she does once a month. Soon after, a fingerstyle acoustic guitarist takes the stage while a third musician arrives and stakes his spot on the growing list of the evening’s performers. “It’s a family,” Seney says of the group of Java Jams artists and attendees. “It’s great, and everyone is different. It’s an open door and whoever walks in is welcomed with open arms. We’re always excited to hear them create.”

The community of musicians (and caffeine enthusiasts, book lovers and board game addicts, among others) is one of many that have sprung up in and around the city’s downtown thanks to an influx of students, residents and visitors who have discovered a rejuvenated city center. Cafes naturally lend themselves to building community, and a stroll down Elm Street reveals a diverse, vibrant café culture that has helped transform the area into a bustling, energetic space with an easy familiarity. Java Jams began with the opening of Café la Reine in 2013 when Seney walked into the then newly-opened shop to talk music with owner Alexandra Horton — who was just beginning to fulfill the dream of owning her own café. When Horton graduated from Saint Anselm College, just across the river, she knew she wanted to open her own business. It was just a matter of what and where. A love of coffee and a fascination with cafes made the ‘what’ an easy answer. It was the ‘where’ that posed a bit of a challenge. “I started searching the downtown area,” Horton says. “I was looking on Elm Street up to Chestnut and down in the Millyard a little bit. But then I kind of honed-in my search on just a few blocks. I really wanted to be in this block, right across from City Hall. It’s pretty centrally located. I just waited for the right size space to come up and it did. The first day it went up online I came to see it and I said ‘I want to rent this right now.’” Studying communities and even café culture at Saint Anselm sparked the idea for the former Windham resident. When she found the 1,000-square-foot space in October of 2012 and signed a lease three months later, the vision began to take shape in the form of a store front along Manchester’s main thoroughfare. “I envisioned a café similar to this — small tables, closer together,” Horton says. “I want people to sit together and get to know each MANCHESTER ADVANTAGE 25

other. I wanted it to have that warm, cozy feel.” Add a little caffeine and some fresh, organic fare and that feel started to take shape. Café la Reine gets its coffee from Blue Fire Coffee Roasters and some of its baked goods from The Good Loaf in Milford and Dutch Epicure in Amherst. The café’s acai bowls are guest favorites, as are the all-natural meats, cheeses and fresh veggies Horton added to the menu two winters ago. But when you walk into a café, you expect great coffee. “If you ask my customers what the specialty is, they’ll tell you it’s our iced coffee — it’s the No. 1 seller,” Horton says. “And now our cold brew, as well. I would hope our coffee is our specialty — it’s really, really awesome, highquality stuff.” Particularly notable, especially for regulars, is the coffee hissing loudly from Big Red — the oversized, eye-catching espresso machine that dominates the counter near the back of the comfortable shop. Though well-loved, the machine is nearing the end of its days on Elm Street. “It’s kind of sad because our beautiful Big Red has lasted us so many years,” Horton says, laughing. “But we’ll go with something a little more reliable since we’re busier now.” Things have gotten busier, because residents and visitors alike have flocked to the area, according to business owners. “It’s definitely changed for the better,” Horton says. “It’s so much more populated now. There

are more and more people working and living downtown. I love to see that. I love to see people moving downtown. I think Manchester has a lot to offer young professionals and people who are looking to downsize. People are moving into downtown apartments. I think it’s really gotten so much more saturated with people and I love that.” Step outside onto Elm Street and find yourself literally on the doorstep of Dancing Lion Chocolate. Those in-the-know swear by owner Richard Tango-Lowy’s skills with sweet indulgences. Tango-Lowy graduated with honors from Ecole Chocolat in Vancouver, and earned Master Chocolatier designations from Ecole Du Grand Chocolat Valrhona in Tain L’Hermitage, France and Ecole Chocolat’s Master Chocolatier course in Tuscany. While his work with chocolate is renowned, it’s what Tango-Lowy is doing with tea that’s turning heads. The Elm Street shop is becoming the top tea destination in the northeastern U.S. “I love tea, and what I realized is that other than in Montreal, it’s really hard to find good tea served in the appropriate way — Chinesestyle,” Tango-Lowy says. The shop offers a range from casual, yet perfectly prepared and delicious teas, to intricate, experiential services. Tango-Lowy encourages anyone interested to carve out 3060 minutes for the visual, engaging service. “It’s not something you rush through,” he

says. “You take your time with it. It’s a little ceremonial, very visual, and you get to enjoy teas in a way that’s it’s traditionally consumed. It’s beautiful.” Just a few doors down from both Café la Reine and Dancing Lion Chocolate, Keating Tufts is preparing for a busy night. Tufts is coowner of Boards and Brews — a board game café that has drawn a loyal, enthusiastic crowd of gamers since opening in April 2018. “I grew up in Manchester and it always seemed to be lacking a place to do different things,” Tufts says while seated at one of the many large tables throughout the 3,000square-foot space. “I stumbled across a video of a board game café online and I thought it would be really cool if it worked in our city.” Tufts, a Southern New Hampshire University graduate, began his professional career as a social worker. During that three-year period, he began working with people with varying

26 MANCHESTER ADVANTAGE www.manchester-chamber.org

disabilities. He found that board games were a rewarding and valuable tool for communicating with his clients. “I said, ‘pick a game, we’ll go buy it and play it,’” Tufts says. “And that’s how the whole thing started. We started with ‘King of Tokyo,’ we had a blast playing it, so I invited my friends over and we’d all play. I saw people with disabilities playing with people without disabilities — and everyone was on the same playing field with the same rules and having a good time.” Tufts began collecting games, amassing more than 1,000 by the time Boards and Brews opened. During the first week of operation, a local game collector opted to move, leaving the young entrepreneur with an additional 500 games for the café. “We have a little bit of everything,” Tufts says. “The library is organized into categories — classic, modern classic, word games, trivia games, party games, co-op games, casual games, strategy games and then the hardcore games.” A packed room on a Friday night included groups of people leaning over games ranging from Catan, Clue and Dungeons and Dragons, among others. Sitting right in the front window, however, is a throwback from the 70’s that seems to catch almost everyone’s eye. “That was one of our first guest requests,” Tufts says of the retro-looking toy featuring red and blue robots facing off. “I went out and got it and it’s been a crowd pleaser ever since.” Guests pay $5 and are given access to the entire Boards and Brews game library — and as much time as they want to indulge in their favorites. The game fee is waived during lunch, and also if sitting along the long, hardwood bar while sipping a drink and people-watching is more your thing. “We are a board game café, though,” Tufts says. “And we do encourage our guests to experience those games. We’ll have some that hang out for a couple hours and some that hang out all day.” Who makes up the Boards and Brews community? According to Tufts — everyone. “I built this place for the people who already live here,” he says. “We needed a space, so I was hoping that we could try to be part of the community. I want to create an atmosphere where people want to come and be part of that community and do something different.” It’s many of these people that come to Seney’s open mic night at the café a few doors down, and it’s also those people — and visitors from around the region — who pile onto Seney’s Manchvegas Brew Bus to tour craft breweries in and around the city. Seney and www.manchester-chamber.org

her husband, Bill, own the 14 passenger transit cargo van, and provide a curated, entertaining trip through some of the area’s finest craft breweries. The Manchvegas Brew Bus makes stops at a number of local breweries, including Great North Aleworks on Holt Avenue; Backyard Brewery on Mammoth Road, Candia Road Brewing Co. on Candia Road, Swift Current Brewing Co. and Stark Brewing Company on North Commercial Street, Ancient Fire Mead and Cider on South Willow Street, as well as destinations in Greater Manchester. “There are all these beautiful hidden gems in our area that really are small businesses,” Seney says. “There are stories behind them and stories are created by incredible people who want to make our city a better, more beautiful place.” The idea came to Seney in the middle of a particularly challenging drive from Boston to Manchester. A professional musician, Berklee College of Music graduate and teacher, she was rushing to get back to the Queen City for a 6 p.m. show. While the concept had come up previously, the stressful commute put it on the front-burner. “You only live once, so you might as well take the leap and do it,” Seney says. “We had a pint, I said, ‘I have this idea — what do you think?’ He’s a craft beer lover and hosts trivia three nights a week, so we said, ‘cheers.’ He quit his job on Monday, we became an LLC on Tuesday and we bought the bus a week later and launched April 14, 2018. It’s been full steam ahead ever since.” Tours start and end at the Backyard Brewery, where there’s plenty of parking. Guests board the bus and are ushered around

the city by Alli or Bill Seney, and trips can include trivia, historical information and details about Manchester that surprise even longtime residents. Occasionally Alli Seney’s musical credentials will become the topic of conversation and requests start to fly. (“Sometimes I’ll bust out into song, other times I’m paying attention to the driving.”) The tours have revealed another community that has formed — craft brew enthusiasts. Seney describes the city’s brewing scene as “insane,” and that the groups who join them are provided a safe, responsible way to indulge their love of a white-hot industry. “Our vision is to educate the community and show them how amazing this area is that we live in,” Seney says. “We don’t travel more than a 10-mile radius because we don’t need to. There’s so much to offer.” Including an increasingly rare find: a thriving

independent bookstore — though Bookery Manchester, created by owner Elizabeth Hitchcock and manager Elizabeth Cipriano — is much more than that. “As we started to look at bookstores and what was happening in the bookstore scene, we knew we needed to look at the entire business as a whole to make sure we had things that would be very complimentary,” Hitchcock says while taking a breather in the shop’s large, airy community room. “As we looked at the model and different places, obviously Gibson’s [Bookstore, in Concord] has a cafe, and then we went to Book and Bar in Portsmouth and we started to see this concept where you could have beer, wine, prosecco, a café and also some light food that could help augment the business of the books.” The shop, which opened in May, has already built a loyal community that reflects its clientele. According to the pair responsible for creating the look, feel and design of the shop, that is an artistic, edgy, tech-savvy group with a love of books. It’s grown into something that “far exceeds” the initial vision, allowing customers to get to know and work with artists, authors and craftsmen. The open, welcoming space — packed with a carefullycurated collection of books and anchored by a tempting café in the back, Bookery Manchester has become the fulfillment of a longtime vision. “I certainly remember when I was a little kid, getting around grandma’s table at Thanksgiving,” Hitchcock says. “There’s such a familial feeling to spending time with each other around food, and I think almost everyone experiences that feeling when you’re communing and eating with someone. It helps us become even more of a deep-seated part of our community.”

Who, then, makes up the community? “We see a number of things,” Hitchcock says. “We get a lot of people who are working [remotely] in here, and we get a lot of people here on dates. That’s a fun one — when you see a cute couple up in the front and you can kind of tell it’s a first date.” A full calendar has also built loyalty among a group of regulars who feel at home in the store. Authors offer insight into their work, musicians set up just inside the front window looking out onto Elm Street to perform music on Thursdays, and a new speaker series will also begin this year. “I feel like all these events bring people together,” Hitchcock says. “They may have disparate backgrounds, but they also have common interests, which is really pulling this community feeling together.” n

A Spirited Café Stop by Café la Reine and you may catch a glimpse of the supernatural. According to Queen City storytellers, the space is haunted by a ghost who goes by the name of Avery. Ghost hunting site Hollowhill.com reports that Avery is a “gregarious, cheerful ghost who wants attention now and then.” “We’re not really sure,” Owner Alexandra Horton says of the local legend. “But he’s been known to knock things over and knock stuff off the shelves and pictures off the walls.” Is he a welcome visitor? “I’m sure my staff in the morning or late at night would say ”no,” she says. “But that’s probably when you hear creepy things. They’ve heard footsteps coming down the hall—and yet no one is there.” The advice given by Hollowhill.com? “Quietly say “hello” to him if you feel that he’s nearby.”

Great Location, Accessibility, Great People Manufacturing Helps Drive Queen City Economy: Business-Friendly Culture Attracts Global Firms By Liisa Rajala

40 MANCHESTER ADVANTAGE www.manchester-chamber.org

Nick Mercier, CEO of Macy Industries, a Hooksett-based metal fabricator, is the second generation family member to lead and develop the company. www.manchester-chamber.org

MANCHESTER ADVANTAGE 41

From textiles to technology, manufacturing has long played a role in the economic health of the Queen City.

S

ince the 19th century — when Manchester was home to the largest textile plant in the world — manufacturing has served as the long-standing economic engine for the region. The industry may have changed significantly since the 1800s, as the Millyard has grown into a hub for advanced manufacturing and high technology, but the remnants of the textile industry remain, and in some cases those threads have woven the pathways leading to a hightech future. Operating in Manchester for nearly 60 years, Velcro Companies operates from three buildings with 465,000 square feet of space. The campus includes offices as well as the company’s manufacturing, shipping, receiving and distribution departments. “When the company initially came from Canada to the U.S., we went to the New Hampshire market because at the time we were predominantly textiles and it’s historically been a good pool of talent for textiles,” says Dirk Foreman, president of Velcro’s North American region. Even Velcro has undergone its own evolution in Manchester, where it houses its global research and development center. “Velcro is generally perceived as a hook and loop fastener company, which is where we started, that’s definitely our history, but over the last 25 years or so, we have diversified into other materials, particularly plastics,” explains Foreman.

Velcro’s Manchester facility produces hightech plastic hook and loops and plastic extrusions in addition to textile hook and loops. Velcro also continues to utilize the substantial network of suppliers in New England, including a nylon supplier located nearby. “New England is a hotbed for companies that produce raw materials for industrial manufacturing,” says Foreman. Nancy Sampo, president of Enviro-Tote, which recently relocated to Londonderry near the Manchester-Boston Regional Airport, agrees. Like Velcro, Enviro-Tote works with a network of material suppliers up and down the East Coast. “Because of Manchester’s history, with the sewing mills, there are still some qualified technicians left in the area for servicing our equipment,” says Sampo. When Enviro-Tote was founded in 1990, it literally utilized Manchester’s textile past to build its future in the area. From 1950 to 1990, Pandora Industries employed 1,000 employees, producing over 60,000 sweaters a week in the Manchester Millyard. When the manufacturer closed, Enviro-Tote bought all of its original equipment and employed several women who stitched at the company. “One of our ladies, Athena, when we got everything set up and the women came over, we bought the machine that she worked on. And one of the other women had the same chair that she sat in. There have always been

very touching memories,” says Sampo. Enviro-Tote, which produces bags featuring marketing slogans or company logos — stitchers will sew between 500 and 1,000 bags perday — prides itself on triple stitching the handle on its bags, ensuring durability. “We triple stitch the handle on it because what good is the bag if the handle falls off?” says Sampo. “Enviro-Tote bags can be used well more than the 200 times other bag producers may guarantee. We have the longevity in our product. The high quality will last for a long time so it’s one of the best marketing pieces.”

Business-friendly culture

Nick Mercier, CEO of Macy Industries, a metal fabricator, has watched the manufacturing industry and community evolve, since his father started Macy Industries and moved the company to Hooksett in 1985. “You have so many companies that have come through that have been phenomenal, and it’s a result of our mills,” says Mercier. “People in Manchester worked very hard because millwork was not easy, and we have that core community and we retain those values.”

42 MANCHESTER ADVANTAGE www.manchester-chamber.org

Mercier immediately points to high-tech companies like Dyn, a homegrown internet networking company. Dyn was acquired in 2016 by Oracle, a California computer software company that has since settled into the Manchester Millyard with a new sign facing the highway. Additionally, Amazon announced in the summer of 2018 that it would acquire online pharmacy PillPack, which will remain in the Millyard. “Manchester is finally on the map,” declares Mercier. “Boston has been on the map forever, but Manchester is finally on the map and I think that’s really good for the community.” Just next door to Macy Industries is GE Aviation, which invested $50 million to expand its Hooksett facility by 65,000 square feet in 2016. The plant employs nearly 900 people, with additional hires of up to 125 people expected this year and another 75 hires expected in 2019, according to Brandon Wagner, GE’s executive plant leader. “They did that because they recognized New Hampshire was a right-to-work state, we’re non-unionized. That’s really important to GE and they elected to take the facility they have here and upgrade,” says Mercier. “They made an investment in New Hampshire because they recognized we have good employees, we have a good tax structure and we provide good products and services. It gives you the relationship and the family business feel that is really important and differentiates us from neighboring states.” EFI, a California electronics imaging company, also announced major expansion plans in 2016, building a new 220,000-square-foot facility in Londonderry, near the airport, to house its inkjet business that was previously located in the Lakes Region. EFI produces wide-format printing including billboards and large signs as well as printing performed on glass and other surfaces. EFI made the decision to move to Manchester after a discussion with state officials regarding the future of the company, says Ken Hanulec, vice president of marketing. “We also make the ink technology. You want to be able to reproduce color in a precise and accurate way, and you have to make sure they stick where they’re supposed to stick so they maintain that adhesion [in all weather conditions],” says Hanluec. “When you make the decision to move a company, it’s about the same amount of work [no matter where you move]. We chose Manchester because we found a great location with accessibility and great people.” www.manchester-chamber.org

do this, and we’d find out over the course of a few months, but now we’re targeting kids that want to learn and we’re targeting our efforts.” Just before the launch of the 2018-2019 school year, Velcro announced a partnership with Manchester West High School to form a program that would teach students soft skills as well as an introduction to the trades through job shadowing, with the opportunity Workforce Development to pursue paid internships and future emWhile Manchester’s talent pool is attractive to ployment at Velcro. manufacturers, a low unemployment rate and Foreman says the program is in response increasing demand for skilled talent has driven to an issue that arose when his employees some companies to take initiative to build a spoke with Manchester Mayor Joyce Craig. larger labor pool. “We thought we could pull up our sleeves Macy Industries approached Manchester to provide potential opportunities for kids Community College to setup internships with that may not want to go to college but want tuition reimbursement. access to benefits and good future, and it was well received by the superintendent and “We pay a majority of their Manchester the mayor,” says Foreman, who kicked off the Community College tuition, for the kids to go class on Oct. 2, 2018. “We really see it as both to school, in exchange we give them a paid an opportunity to provide quality community internship here and it helps us develop our service as well as provide a lot of access to workforce. When these kids get out of school we know they’re trained the way we want them jobs, and we have a lot of jobs to fill,” he says. Now that a big part of the market here in New Hampthe marketplace has gotten so tight on findshire as long as workforce development is ing qualified help, we’ve had to change that strategy and approach Manchester Community addressed, because the single biggest risk we have to the Velcro Companies in New College, which has been a phenomenal relationship,” says Mercier. “It’s given us the ability to Hampshire is access to human capital,” says be one step ahead of what we were. Before we Foreman. “If we can solve that, I can’t see why were finding kids that may or may not want to manufacturing can’t continue.” n

Access to a knowledgeable labor base is important, says Hanulec. “Our largest group of employees at the Manchester location is the engineering team and that includes mechanical, electrical, chemists, the advanced technology team on motion control, and assembly, so having access to talented and well-educated people is critical and that was one reason for the move,” he says.

The Manchester School of Technology, on South Porter Street, is both a career and technical education center.

Manchester Champions its Students Supplemental Programming Opens Doors, Creates Opportunities By Bill Burke

W

ith a shortage of skilled workers and the cost of higher education forcing some to seek out educational alternatives, a number of Manchester schools are offering supplemental opportunities designed to lead the city’s younger residents along a different path to success. “Not all students learn the same way, and

this model attracts students who might learn differently,” Manchester School of Technology Principal Karen Hannigan Machado says. “Not everybody is able to sit in a room, open a book, listen to a teacher for 45 minutes and then go home and do homework.” Schools like the Manchester School of Technology and programs like the New

Hampshire Job Corps Center and Breakthrough Manchester at The Derryfield School are showing students new and creative pathways to future careers. “The 19th century model we have for teaching kids is not the most effective way to teach kids for the world they’re going to face going forward for the remainder of the 21st century,” says Barry Brensinger, coordinator of Manchester Proud — a citizens’ coalition designed to help focus a vision for city schools (see sidebar). “It’s simply not the case. That 19th century model was created to train kids to work in factories in a country that was just beginning to become industrialized. Now our economy is

48 MANCHESTER ADVANTAGE www.manchester-chamber.org

about innovation. We need kids who are creative problem solvers, who can work together as teams. It’s a whole different model of what’s needed for success as individuals, as communities and as a country.” And with the ongoing workforce development crisis affecting the region’s economy, the timing for such opportunities couldn’t be better. “They’re here for a reason and they’re passionate about what they come here for. Students need that — to have a hook. We need to get away from the thinking that [the only option is] to go to college to have a great career,” Hannigan Machado says. The Manchester School of Technology, which is both a career and technical education center and a four-year, competencybased high school, works hand-in-hand with the Manchester School District to provide up-to-date programs designed to prepare students for a changing economy. “There’s a desperate need for people who are in the trades,” Hannigan Machado says. “New Hampshire also has huge health care needs. We have so many people retiring in these fields and there’s nobody there to fill these jobs. There’s a real need for programs like ours.” The Manchester School of Technology (MST) has been a career and technical education (CTE) center since 1982. In 2012, however, it received permission from the Department of Education to open a school-within-aschool. Now, students can attend the CTE program — 100 minutes daily in a program of their choice — or attend full-time and take part in a traditional academic setting. “We call ourselves a career high school,” Hannigan Machado says. “Every student that comes here has to be in at least one CTE program, when they’re ready, and we have some kids who have finished up to three CTE programs.” The programs range from fire science/EMT, HVAC, manufacturing and welding and residential carpentry to video and digital media production, automotive technology and culinary arts, among others. “Manchester [School of Technology] and only one other school offer a plumbing course in the whole state of New Hampshire in CTE,” Hannigan Machado says. “Who is training these plumbers? Where will they come from? There’s going to be a desperate need in this state soon enough.” Students complete their respective programs and are quite often ready to help address the city’s employment needs. The apwww.manchester-chamber.org

proach, Hannigan Machado says, is by design. Each program has an advisory board made up of business, higher education and community partners. “It keeps our curriculum current and it allows us to purchase the most current equipment and address the most current needs,” Hannigan Machado says. The New Hampshire Job Corps Center (NH JCC), a no-cost career technical training program administered by the U.S. Department of Labor that helps young people through technical and academic training programs, is also helping to fill the need with its supplemental education options. Training programs there include advanced manufacturing, electrical, facilities maintenance, security services, culinary arts, hospitality services, medical administrative assistant, clinical medical assistant, and licensed nursing assistant. “All of our instructors have years of experience working in the fields they teach, and our students come out of those programs with a number of recognized credentials that give them a leg up in the job market,” says John Miller, career transition readiness coordinator at the New Hampshire Job Corps Center. The NH JCC also offers advanced college training programs, which are either certificate or associate degree programs, in computer aided design (CAD), robotics, registered nurs-

ing, hotel and restaurant management, cybersecurity, and pharmacy technician. The NH JCC has partnered with Manchester Community College, Nashua Community College, New Hampshire Technical Institute and St. Joseph School of Nursing for all of the Advanced college training programs. Students are evaluated using a competency-based system, rather than assigning traditional grades. “Students must first complete a regular training area — but while they are in our advanced training, they can still live at our center, and we pay for everything related to the program: tuition, books, etc.,” Miller says. “Our program is 100 percent free to our students.” The program is primarily residential, with 85-90 percent of students living at the center. 16-to-24-year-old students are recruited from around the state, and must meet certain economic criteria. The program is designed for economically disadvantaged student — with or without a high school diploma — and also provides an opportunity to earn high school equivalency credentials. Students spend an average of one year in the program, after which they are provided transitional services such as finding employMANCHESTER ADVANTAGE 49

ment, transportation, housing and child care and assistance with the college admissions process, among other things. “They break down as many barriers for our students as they can,” Miller says of the Career Transition Services team. “Our program is for people who want to change their lives, who want to achieve their career and life goals. We give them marketable and highly sought skills so they can do that.” Still other opportunities are helping city students prepare for their college careers. Breakthrough Manchester at The Derryfield School is a tuition-free, year-round, multi-year academic program that helps promising young students — particularly those with limited opportunities — build skills and confidence to enter and succeed in college prep programs. “We take smart kids who love to learn and fuel that,” says Breakthrough Manchester Assistant Director Lucy Weathers. “This community can thrive by having this kind of supplemental education. The community can see that college is achievable and they can do whatever they want to do.” The program operates on a dual mission approach, cultivating two populations of students. The first ensures promising, motivated, limited opportunity Manchester students are on the right path to higher education; and the second inspires high school and college students to pursue careers in education. “Those who are interested in going into education have their own classroom and get to see what being a teacher is like,” Weathers says. “They’re put into the education system and hopefully make the system stronger by giving

them practice before they step into an actual classroom.” All Breakthrough programming — including transportation and meals — is provided tuitionfree to students, funded by foundations, businesses and individuals who have gotten behind the program’s mission. The program takes place during five Saturdays throughout the school year and then for six weeks over the summer. Currently, 108 students are enrolled — students can only begin the program following sixth grade — and only Manchester students are eligible to apply. Special consideration is given to students who meet certain criteria, including living in a single parent household, speaking a language other than English at home, being eligible for free or reduced lunch or being the first generation in their family to earn a four-year degree in the U.S. “It’s really about opportunity,” says Weathers. “We work to give students as many options as possible. So many times roads are closed to cer-

tain students. Here, they see more roads and options and if they work hard, they can make those roads and options achievable.” Breakthrough Manchester has also partnered with the Campus Compact AmeriCorps VISTA Program, receiving a large grant the past two summers for its teaching fellows to receive an education award that they can use towards any of their college expenses, including tuition, books and other school fees. “We’ve seen some big successes and small successes and we see people grow a lot,” Weathers says. “It’s pretty incredible.” n New Hampshire Job Corps Center 943 Dunbarton Road, Manchester (800) 733-5627 newhampshire.jobcorps.gov Manchester School of Technology 530 South Porter St., Manchester (603) 624-6490 mst.mansd.org Breakthrough Manchester at The Derryfield School 2108 River Road, Manchester (603) 669-4524 breakthroughmanchester.org

Manchester Proud manchesterproud.org

Civic Group Helps Plan for the Future What began as an informal gathering of local business and education leaders hoping to better understand the city’s public schools has blossomed into a full-fledged community movement. That group, Manchester Proud, has begun working with the city to form a vision for its schools and to help develop a five-year plan for the district based on community input. The school district’s previous strategic plan expired early last summer, leaving an opportunity to re-examine and reintroduce new ideas. Toward that end, Manchester Proud has worked to fund three elements in what will be the next five-year plan: project management, strategic consulting and community engagement. “The more we’re reading and learning and visiting other communities to understand this issue, the more strongly we feel that [improving education] is an absolutely critical issue to the future of our city,” Manchester Proud Coordinator Barry Brensinger says. “We genuinely believe that.” Initially formed by Southern New Hampshire University Campus President Patricia Lynott, local developer Arthur Sullivan, former Mayor Robert Baines and Brensinger, a design principle at Lavallee Brensinger Architects, the group quickly gained momentum. The number of advisors and supporters — called ‘Champions’ within the organization — grew to include a wide range of city leaders. The group met with the school board in May, which voted unanimously to form a partnership with Manchester Proud. Additionally, the movement has gained the support of Manchester’s teachers’ union and counts Superintendent Dr. Bolgen Vargas and Assistant Superintendent Amy Allen among its members. “We went with what we hoped would be a compelling case,” Brensinger says of the school board meeting. “I think it was so compelling that in fact we received the unanimous vote of the board, which was a game changer for us. We had hoped to get their support. We had dreamed about getting their unanimous support, and having gotten that we were even more invigorated to move forward. It was their show of support that was an indicator to the many, many folks in the community that, in fact, we can form a partnership with the school board and the district and can get this work done. It is entirely achievable that we can work together and do this. It was wonderful that www.manchester-chamber.org

they showed us the good faith willingness to partner with us on this.” Part of the initial motivation to create Manchester Proud came from a need to keep the city’s recent momentum moving forward. Thriving cultural, recreation, nonprofit, health care and entertainment sectors have grown. In recent years, however, the business sector has begun to feel some resistance when it comes to hiring — potential candidates weren’t necessarily enthusiastic about sending their children to Manchester public schools. “The schools have that bad rap,” Brensinger says. “Not entirely justified, by the way, but it exists, so you have to deal with it in the real world.” Workforce development is the top challenge facing the business community, and in the absence of action, Manchester’s ability to compete for qualified employees will certainly be compromised, according to Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Mike Skelton. “A prosperous future for Manchester requires public schools that not only educate and train our own kids, but are a source of pride and vital asset in the recruitment of outside talent,” Skelton says. Since the Chamber’s early endorsement of the group, more than 100 Manchester businesses and community organizations have signedon as Champions of Manchester Proud. “You could throw all that aside and you could argue that we as a community should be doing this for the sake of the kids,” Brensinger says. “We’ve got almost 14,000 kids in our school district here in Manchester, and many of them bring challenges to the door of their

school every day that for a lot of us are almost unthinkable. I would argue that Manchester Proud would argue that we as a community have a responsibility to, in a very thoughtful, comprehensive, equitable way, provide exceptional learning opportunities for all of the kids who go to school in Manchester. It’s a moral obligation, if you will, that we feel we have as a community. “Manchester has to position itself now to become one of those hub communities — one of those places where people want to go to raise their families. That’s going to be a differentiator going forward.” Manchester Proud organizers will be communicating that message throughout the city in the coming year as part of its outreach. Five work groups have been formed and the search for a national consultant assessment is underway. “Regardless of who you are in Manchester, as a resident, you have a stake in this issue,” Brensinger says. “If you’re a parent of school age kids, obviously you have a stake in this. If you’re an owner of a business that needs to grow, you’ve got a stake because you need the workforce. If you’re a worker who has a family member who needs a good paying job, you’ve got a stake. If you’re a retiree who owns real estate, you’ve got a stake in this. “We believe we’re all in this together which is why we’ve structured it as a community movement. We’re not just another not-forprofit. We’re working over the course of the next year to engage the entire community in this issue.” n MANCHESTER ADVANTAGE 51
