ou’re engaged, the person of your dreams by your side, the big day ahead. The job — and the joy — of planning begins. So many details, so many decisions — gown, flowers, reception site and more. It can be overwhelming, but count on us to get you started, provide inspiration and act as a guide along the way. This Spring/Summer issue of New Hampshire Magazine’s BRIDE will give you tons of ideas for the coming season. Interested in the sleek, bold look of mid-century modern for your wedding? We show you how to pull it off. Ideas for your gown? You’ll see the latest on the “Golden Pond” of movie fame (aka Squam Lake). And for your invitations and other wedding papers? We’ve got the latest on that too. More inspiration comes from our “Real NH Weddings.” And check out our list of venues in the state, some 128 of them, with all the information you need. Because we can’t get all the information in this one magazine, our website (bridenh.com) has extra features and links to local resources. You can also find us on Facebook at Facebook.com/nhbride. And don’t forget, we’ve changed the timing of the Best of BRIDE vote. This year the online poll starts September 11 and ends October 30. Results will appear in the Spring/Summer 2018 issue. (We’ll give you a heads-up on Facebook as a reminder.) Enjoy this special time with your love and, from everyone here, our very best wishes for a wonderful life together.

PS: We’re looking for weddings to feature in our Fall/Winter 2017 issue of BRIDE. Although we can use only a limited number in the magazine, we post all of them online. Interested? Visit bridenh.com to submit your wedding.

3 Chic Ballgown The ball gown is a classic, but (mostly) gone are the overblown princess styles. Maggie Sottero gives an old trend a makeover with this restrained, chic look. Made of Shavon organza, the Bianca Marie features clean lines, a sweetheart neckline and covered buttons on the back. Rosette details on the skirt are also available. maggiesottero.com
4 Dramatic Illusion The Austyn gown by Carolina Herrera has an eye-catching embroidered illusion neckline that plunges into a deep V. The delicate back features the same embroidery and buttons that extend all the way to the bottom of the gauzy skirt. carolinaherrera.com

Jaime Melfi of the new Autumn Nomad Cakes and Café (located in Jackson right next door to florist Dutch Bloemen Winkel) actually created this cake in memory of her beloved grandmother, but her amazing skill with sugar flowers, “water color” and other intricate cake design elements really shine on this passion project. On the opposite end of the cake spectrum, Melfi is also right on trend with “naked” or “translucent” cakes that forgo layers of frosting and fondant. autumnnomad.com

MAD ABOUT
MID-CENTURY
Simple but striking design. Bold geometric patterns. Straight, clean lines combined with sensuous curves. Those are all elements of the mid-century modern look — a look that defines the period from the 1940s through the 1970s. The sleek style was already making a bit of a comeback in recent years, but it was TV’s “Mad Men” that really ignited the interest in using mid-century fashion and furniture as inspiration for design of all sorts — including weddings.

THE CEREMONY
Left: This ceremony spot illustrates the mid-century style’s connection of the indoors with the natural world. Here, a garage door in an old Goffstown mill acts as a backdrop. It’s decorated with a floral mural by Apotheca Flowers. A graphic black-and-white runner and period chairs add to the look. Above: The dots on the invitation from Impress Me Designs mimic the celebratory bubbles of champagne and confetti. The gold-foil print stands out against the all-black background. Below (left to right): An industrial staircase used as an entryway; square rings as part of the geometric design; pops of red to accent the bridesmaid’s bouquet

THE BOUQUET
This kind of bouquet — bold, largescale, deconstructed — is the choice of many brides today. Created by Apotheca Flowers, it comprises anemone, garden roses, peonies, ranunculus, scabiosa, astrantia and an array of foliage such as silver dollar eucalyptus and Cyca palm leaves.

THE TABLE
Perfect for the wedding feast, a stunning floating tablescape filled with flowers crowns the table, providing an element of drama and interest. The natural wood table was hand-built by Archway Construction. Left, from top: The place settings have cork placemats, gold-rimmed glasses, gold flatware, square plates and simple napkins with a black edge. Black wired votive candles provide light and atmosphere. The menu continues the gold-dot theme of the invitations. Table numbers are painted gold.

42 New Hampshire Magazine’s BRIDE | bridenh.com
THE DETAILS Baby photos of the bride and groom are arranged on the wall bordered with mirrors with a round geometric design.
A gold-foil “Take a Treat” sign for favors coordinates with a “Make a Wish” sign to encourage notes to the newlyweds.

THE COCKTAILS
The bar is sheathed with corrugated material to create an industrial feel. A midcentury vibe comes from the juxtaposition of industrial with the soft curves of the flowers. Gold accents continue the theme.
44 New Hampshire Magazine’s BRIDE | bridenh.com
The spareness of the mill setting provides a contrast to the asymmetrical geometric patterns of the hassocks, carpet and table ornaments in the lounge area. The furniture has the clean lines of mid-century modern. Below (left to right): Shoes from Off Broadway; natural wood containers (see more about them on p. 18.); a flower crown

Sunrise on Squam Lake You remember the film “On Golden Pond” — the one that takes place on a New Hampshire lake. It is in that serene setting (Squam Lake, in real life) that we show you gorgeous, on-trend gowns. As the rising sun is giving the lake its light, we travel by boat to Church Island, where nature becomes a chapel.
Above and right: Old-fashioned garden flowers make up this romantic bouquet that includes astilbe, roses, ranunculus, dahlias and lisianthus. This gown — with a ruched tulle sweetheart neckline, beaded motif, full tulle skirt and horsehair hemmed layers — makes this whimsical ball gown perfect for the fun and romantic bride. The look, by Sincerity Bridal, is completed with a simple cut edge layered veil. Available at A Day to Remember Bridal Boutique

Right: This dress is a picture of perfection for every bride. The blush organza gown, by Anne Barge, is contrasted with a silk and white lace bodice and flattering charmeuse cummerbund. Top: Gracing the foot of the birch cross is a large garden basket of summery flowers — delphiniums, lilies, hydrangeas and roses. Above left: Classic, yet sexy and sophisticated, this silk satin organza gown with bateau neckline gown by Anne Barge is embellished with ivory Alençon lace. It is completed with pockets, illusion side cutouts and square open back. Above right and opposite page: Pretty in pink, this Anne Barge strapless fit and flare gown is the ultimate modern bridal gown. The architectural construction and Italian Kalika fabric give this gown a shape that you do not see on every bride. Paired with a rose-colored belt, it’s sure to wow. This blush mermaid gown by Allure Bridals is adorned with soft ruching and a flattering belted waist that is perfect on all shapes and sizes. Above: This portrait neckline illusion beaded lace and tulle ball gown achieves a dreamy, princess wedding day look. Off-the-shoulder bridal gowns are on-trend for 2017. Above and top right: Brides who love lace will fall head over heels for this V-neck maid gown by Pronovias. A full-length train and plunging back detail add drama to this simply gorgeous gown. Providing a soft accent is a classic bouquet of mixed roses, stocks and café au lait dahlias with greenery accents. Right: Perfect for a modern-day princess, this Anne Barge V-neck gown of Italian Kalika has a neckline, midriff and hem outlined in rows of soutache with an Alençon lace bodice. The look is completed with a headband of ivory pearls and crystals. Both gowns available at Uniquely Couture Bridal

Elegant, graceful, timeless dress for the understated bride. Comfortable, yet form-fitting, this beautiful lace dress is formal but still easy to dance in. The blouson bodice lends itself to a bohemian vibe, while the crystal halo headpiece brings in a touch of glamour. Available at Uniquely Couture Bridal

A geometric beaded lace mermaid gown with a Queen Anne neckline, lace hem and keyhole back is perfect for the confident and glamorous bride. Daring Duo A LOT OF COUPLES HAVE DAY-AFTER PHOTO SHOOTS, BUT HILARY AND TYSON'S WAS A REAL DOOZY
W
hen Hilary Baker and Tyson Calistro got married in October (see their wedding on page 32), they used a custom-made wine box in their ceremony that was inscribed with “And so the adventure begins.” And, indeed, it had. Two days after the wedding, they did something few couples would ever dare to do — have wedding pictures taken while standing on a narrow ledge hundreds of feet from the ground on the vertical cliffs of Cathedral Ledge in North Conway. “I love exhilarating experiences,” Hilary says. “It makes me feel like I’ve lived life to the fullest.” She had already been sky diving, whitewater rafting and shark cage diving. Tyson had accompanied her on the rafting and shark cage diving, but had qualms about the cliff. Nonetheless, they arrived atop the cliff at 5:30 a.m. to meet their wedding (and cliff) photographer Jay Philbrick. Philbrick and his associate Marc Chauvin, both experienced mountaineers, had done cliff shoots many times and knew how to make it safe by securely harnessing the couple to the rock face (while hanging on ropes themselves). In the pitch-dark, Hilary and Tyson were lowered by rope to the ledge. “The scariest part was me going first, someone who hadn’t rock-climbed before,” says Hilary. “I was told to jump from a seated position and turn 180 to face the cliff. I would say it took me about 15 seconds to jump.” Tyson, not so enthusiastically, followed. The saving grace, she adds, was that they couldn’t see how high they were in the darkness. The quest was to get a gorgeous sunrise shot of the valley, but the weather didn’t cooperate. Fog rolled in and out. An ABC “Nightline” crew was there to shoot it, so there was additional pressure to get the shot. Fog or not, Jay got spectacular shots, the unique wedding pictures that the couple had hoped to get. Three hours later, just after Tyson was lifted off the cliff, the sun appeared and Jay was able to get solo shots of Hilary with the backdrop he wanted. Would they do it again? “In a heartbeat,” says Hilary. “I joked about doing it again for 5-year anniversary photos, but Tyson will need more convincing.” If you want to see how it’s done, check out the Nightline story at http://blog.planet5d.com/2017/02/must-see-daringphotographer-and-daring-clients-get-astounding-results.
