If your Christmas decorations are starting to smell musty and you are planning on getting some new ones, keep on looking, because this last issue of McommeMaison of the year will be of no help to you and with good reason; Christmas, be it white, gold, or sequined, bores us; less than half of the editorial staff plan on putting up a tree this winter. And since we are not sleigh-riding toy distributors or artificial tree suppliers, we have nothing to gain by it. Don't bother looking for GIF T SPECIAL full-page spreads, you won't find them either. They are, like your decorations, at half-mast, still in the boxes and won't be coming out, at least not this year, next year, if all goes well, we will return our jacket and get back to beaten tracks. That said, so as not to go against tradition, and because this year there are so many lovely things to put on tables and show off to your guests some night at a party, we have concocted a little "Christmas tea party" report designed to whet your appetite. This is how we intend to wrap up the year, talking to you about other things, lamps, steam rooms, High Tech, dressing rooms, talented designers with amazing originality, unknown artists, with Hamish Fulton at the forefront, who is worthy of so many detours, with the hope of charming you and leading you, gently, toward a new Design year. The "La" came out of the meeting, initiated by Pierre Yovanovitch, between the designer Maarten Baas represented by Carpenters Workshop Gallery and Pleyel. It gave birth to a magical instrument, the "Smoke Pleyel." This unique grand piano, transformed into a work of art by the artist is placed in the center of a staging combining classic elegance with contemporary creation. It embodies Pierre Yovanovitch's desire to do away with space-time through a rigourous, sensual esthetic that asserts itself like a universal music. "Although the piano is transformed, it is still an instrument you can play. Through this piece, my work was aimed at bringnig together visual arts and music," explains Maarten Baas. With this project, the artist is paying homage to Chopin's piano, a mythic Pleyel piano, by adding to it hi definition of beauty made up of imperfections. The piano was burned with a blowtorch and covered with black epoxy, like the iconic pieces in the "Smoke " collection. Treated with the same burning technique, the piano stool was upholstered in a woven pattern conceived by Pierre Yovanovitch and made using the Aubusson weaving technique by the Robert Four Gallery. Contrary to appearances, the harmonic and acoustic structure of the instrument was preserved from carbonisation, which allows this piece, a veritable functional, vibrant, and attractive sculpture, to keep its fourth dimension: the timbre and colourful sound of a Pleyel. The "Smoke Pleyel " will be played by a pianist, who will give this king of instruments its meaning, throughout the show.

Originally from Southern California, stylist Rick Owens inserts a demanding, remarkable esthetic into fashion. His original vision plays with materials. He has lived and worked in Paris for the past nine years, but it is in the United States that he developed the dark, minimal style he disseminates in his creations. A film buff, he is fascinated with Hollywood films from the 1930s in particular, for the projected black and white image, whose contrasts and values are both sensual and tragic. Like those cinematographic masterpieces, he tends to reconcile darkness and light in his expression.

Les Cosmogonies, designed by Victoria Magniant and Antoine Pradels are modular lighting structures. Inspired by the simplicity of traditional Japanese architecture, they are made of polygonal modules in wood covered in paper. The modules – held in place with magnets in their framework – can be assembled freely to build illuminated structures. You can assemble them by varying the shapes and colours to make hanging lamps, partitions, or wall lights. Their covering comes in a wide range of Japanese papers — watermarked, translucid, or opaque, whose polychromatic sides create luminous multiple resonances, rythms, and formal harmonies. Les Cosmogonies are presences – modular, minimalist, and poetic structures. Each variation is a unique work, a new way to recompose space in an informal, fluid manner.

Stars, humour and freedom, the eve of the 80’s A break from the serious, the style of the 80s made its astounding entry in our interiors because, if you'll recall 1978, was the year that "Les Bronzés" (French Fried Vacation), "La Cage aux Folles" and "Grease" came out in theaters, the New Wave hit the music scene, with the releases of the first albums by the Police, the Cure, and Joy Division, and the year of dance, and partying: "Stayin’Alive" and "Night Fever" by the Bee Gees shared the airwaves with dance funk by Kool and the Gang. A look back at this flagship year, in which the "counter-design" of Studio Alchimia and "High Tech" advocated diversion, the essence of humour. The cult of the star After years of democratising interior decoration, started in reaction to the elitism of the art deco movement, the collective moved into the background, shelved by the cult of the exclusive. Rare, costly materials return to the world of decoration. Limited editions were all the rage. The extraordinary is sought after, admired. Stars, and artistic creation as a whole, returned to center stage. The 80s casually thumbed their nose at modernisation and mass production. People venerated, adored, became fetishistic; nothing was lukewarm at the start of a new sociocultural era.

Studio Alchimia: a fervor for creative casualness The creations of Studio Alchimia, a collective of Italian designers founded in 1976, were discovered by the general public in 1978, particularly throuh the famous Proust armchair, by Alessandro Mendini. Designers like Alessandro Mendini, Ettore Sottsass, Michele De Lucchi, and Andrea Branzi, breaking with modernism, exhibited unique pieces, in this experimental design gallery founded by architect Alessandro Guerriero. The artists proclaimed a return of innovation, free from any industrial pressure.
78 Studio Alchimia brought about a veritable break in the era of design, diverting its codes and values through free, humouristic creations. A decoration star: the Proust armchair by Alessandro Mendini In 1978, Alessandro Mendini came up with an overrefined armchair with humour and spirit. He imagined an armchair made of wood and hand-painted fabric, that Proust could have used, colourful and generous. The fabric was designed in conjunction with Francesco Binfaré for Cassina, following an exploration of the places where Proust lived. It was an inspiration for the divisionist painting of Paul Signac, which leaves the viewer's eye free to associate the strokes of colour, arranged in a loose conglomeration, as they wish. Dozens of versions of this armchair, in varying patterns and materials, were sold as unique pieces by Studio Alchimia.
High Tech anti-design
In 1978, following on the Georges Pompidou centre, Richard Rogers conceived the Lloyd’s Building, designed by Renzo Piano. Borrowing materials from the industrial era, in unusual creations, where the cables and pipes become creative elements, the Lloyd’s Building is unique in that it "shows off its guts." What should be inside is outside. Richard Rogers shattered the exclusively functional value of stairwells, elevators, electrical conduits and water lines, which become valued elements of the décor. High Tech asserted itself, demonstrating that the functional can be preserved, all while valuing the creation and work on the artistic form. Associated with derision, futility, and nonintellectual values such as celebration, parties, the creative movement of the 80s was poorly received, and minimised in the following decades. Initiated by a constructive criticism because derived from mass production, this movement was the fruit of a thought that has no rival in the ideals of today. In 2013, the codes are inverted; think less, laugh more, and dance more are the foundations of a valued art of living much less futile than it appears. This is perhaps one of the reasons why the famous contemporary designers are including the emblematic fluorescent colours in design…

Content and form… Contemporary interiors favor openness, synonymous with space and light. The suite, which in one space dedicated to well-being, combines bedroom, dressing room, and bathroom, illustrates this current home trend, and manufacturers are multiplying the solutions for fitting out these private spaces, regardless of their size. Spots: design and discreet‌ Spots provide the discretion you're looking for when you want to draw attention to other components of the room. This type
of lamp attaches to the ceiling and is increasingly widespread. Spots, in fact, have many advantages. In addition to being effective in optimally lighting any room, they have an understated style thanks to their minimalist design. Additionally, they offer a certain discretion. At the entrance, in the dining room, kitchen, or living roo, the atmosphere will depend on the lighting power and the number of spots mounted on the ceiling. Some lamps are also adapted to the bathroom, because they resist humidity. For secondary lighting, it is preferable to choose spots equipped with LEDs.

Track light or recessed? Many parameters should be considered before buying spot lights for the ceiling. A recessed spot can not really be used unless the room has a false ceiling. Part of the family of 1st-generation conceptual artists, Hamish Fulton, who was born in England in 1946, has been travelling the world on foot since the 70s, immersing himself in the 'artistic walks' that for him represent solo performances. Educated at London's famous Saint Martin’s School, the artist realised very early on that art could not be confined to a workshop. As a result, and together with his friend Richard Long, he decided, at the beginning of this period, to seek the material he needed to create a work from the long walks he would take. For him, "walking transforms". The intimate experiences of these hundreds of walks and the thousands of kilometres travelled are recreated in the exhibition through a series of photographs, wall paintings and sculptures. Indeed, it is on this transition from the private sphere to the public sphere that his approach is based. The CRAC Languedoc-Roussillon will be presenting a one-off exhibition from 30 October 2013 until 2 February 2014 marking the return to France of British artist Hamish Fulton. The monographic exhibition, entitled En marchant ('Walking'), comprises new works!: including photographs and wall paintings. It puts a new perspective on the work of this well-established "walking artist" showcased in a number of institutional and private collections both in France and abroad and enjoyed on the international stage for over forty years. The desire for a place warmed by its fireplaces and its kitchen, made alive by its friends and its cooks, free like a space where anything can happen, made fertile by its surprises hidden or displayed on or in the walls. Is it a bistro in Paris? Is it a canteen somewhere else? Was the Brick there already? Were the floor tiles really laid by a naive lunatic? The bronzes cast in concrete, were they deliberate, or was it a mistake? Are there more hidden things here? Would the Droog restroom be better in a free clinic? Did they forget to paint the chairs? Didn't they have enough money to match the lamps and place settings? Who took this incredible collection of surrealist photos? Why are the fireplaces there and yet not there? At ma cocotte, everything is a question without an answer. The only things that count are what are you eating and who are you eating it with." — Philippe Starck —

Beyond the limits of creativity… While it is impossible to think out spontaneity, it very much appears that Philippe Starck has succeeded in staging it, in this restaurant where, he says, "questions have no answers." Always spiritual, Starck surpasses, from creation to creation, his own limits; he always fills us with wonder, again and again. With ma cocotte, he creates the unexpected, the unthinkable. And yet, you cannot imagine that these objects were gleaned in chaos and total disorder, so much a spirit permeates these spaces, that of Starck
loving Saint Ouen. Ma cocotte, has the atomosphere of a Warm Paris, Starck's joyous fantasy and, in fact, a command to stop asking yourself questions… The counter, in stainless steel, the white of the walls highlights the colour, the amusing, colourful creations recall Starck's imagination. And, the eye is drawn to a crazy creation of frames, empty, full, unaligned, un perfect harmony, that only a certain spontaneity can have staged.

The dining room, mixing genres and eras, has style.

Where we discover that errors of taste And this is almost surprising about it... how the caramel coloured leatherette of working-class bistros, supposed to clash with the contemporary designer lamp, finds its place. Oh, what a place! Ma cocotte is one of those places where you want to be, where everything is beautiful in the end, but it is that beauty you only perceive with the heart, the beauty that remains. The "error of taste" no longer exists, Stark destroys it, for good. Make way for real creation. Starck created this place by drawing inspiration from a Sunday morming, and a bowl of hot soup eaten at his grandmother's house.

Here we find, like a Sunday at grandma's house, the old fashioned effect of mismatched furniture, simultaneously with time and the chance of life's moments. But added to it is Starck's loving eye, an eye that doesn't judge, thus revealing beauty and those moments of tenderness. The large table, where diners sit facing the kitchen, appears straight out of the imagination, where we dream of long, laughter-filled discussions. The rustic wood wonderfly contrasted by the stainless steel of the kitchen, the temple of excellence in the service of well-being.

And, in the middle of this abundance of life, blending conviviality, the delights of the luxury hotel, human gettogethers and laughter, the unexpected continues its reign. The restroom, white and immaculate, is a surprise, like a void in the middle of abundance. The essential thing, objects serving people, high quality plumbing, remains. But the void shouts out, calls, like an invitation to contemplation, to live fully in this space we find ourselves in, alone. Obviously, ma cocotte wins its gamble, an invitation to live each moment, without thinking.

Pricila House was a gamble to revitalise a neighbourhood. It was in this spirit of rebirth that the architectural firm of Martín Gómez created Pricila, a home, with the look of a luxury hotel, perceived today as a satelite, halfway between the past and the future.
