Spring 2023

DIRECTOR’S LETTER

I am deeply honored and excited to join the McNay Art Museum as Director and CEO this spring. I have been so moved by the warm and generous welcome from the superb team here at the Museum, and from the wider community.

I come to the McNay from The Fralin Museum of Art at The University of Virginia (UVA), where I served as the J. Sanford Miller Family Director and Chief Curator for the last six years. In that time, my passion for community engagement and education led to greater investment in advocacy of cross-disciplinary programming and amplifying underrepresented and marginalized voices in the museum setting.

I was drawn to the opportunity at the McNay because of the truly meaningful work being done and its alignment with my own core values. During each of my visits to the McNay in the selection process, I was delighted to see people of all ages and backgrounds enjoying the galleries and grounds in a place they clearly felt welcome. For me, this is the most important mark of a healthy and vibrant museum.

The McNay’s robust commitment to reflecting stories and voices of the San Antonio communities in exhibitions and programming was an important factor in my decision to pursue this role. The Museum’s dedication to integrity, innovation, excellence, and equity aligns with the work that has anchored my career.

I eagerly anticipate working together to further the institution’s mission to provide transformational experiences to the San Antonio community through a growing collection and thought-provoking exhibitions. With your help, we will continue to build the McNay as San Antonio’s place of belonging.

Womanish: Audacious, Courageous, Willful Art

March 4–July 2, 2023

Tobin Exhibition Galleries

Marion Koogler McNay, the McNay Art Museum’s founder, was an accomplished artist and supporter of the arts in her adopted hometown of San Antonio. Since its opening to the public in 1954, the Museum has collected and presented artwork by women. The McNay continues to honor Marion’s legacy through its commitment to acquisition and exhibition of artwork by women, both from the San Antonio community and beyond.

Inspired by Alice Walker’s In Search of Our Mothers’ Gardens: Womanist Prose (1983), the title of this exhibition Womanish: Audacious, Courageous, Willful Art reclaims the term “womanish,” often considered derogatory, from a place of empowerment. Walker defined the term as: “Usually referring to outrageous, audacious, courageous or willful behavior.” Keeping this in the forefront, Womanish highlights the myriad ways women express themselves.

Womanish: Audacious, Courageous, Willful Art features a broad range of objects acquired over the past dozen years. In 2010, the McNay presented the landmark exhibition Neither Model Nor Muse, which celebrated artwork by women from across the Museum’s collections. Envisioned as a second chapter to Neither Model Nor Muse, Womanish includes work in a variety of media that spans over 90 years. The exhibition includes portraits, abstractions, landscapes, and more that exemplify a broad range of lived experiences and represent many sources of inspiration.

Womanish: Audacious, Courageous, Willful Art is organized for the McNay Art Museum by Lauren Thompson, Assistant Curator; Liz Paris, Collections Manager; Kim Neptune, The Tobin Theatre Arts Fund Assistant Curator; and Paula Contreras, 2022-2023 Semmes Foundation Intern in Museum Studies.

Beyond Reality

March 22–August 13, 2023

Lawson Print Gallery

San Antonio is home to a thriving arts community, from vibrant public art and murals to art galleries and museums. The McNay is committed to highlighting the talent in our community and the Texas region. Beyond Reality features artwork by four Texasbased artists, Carlos Donjuan, Angela Fox, Ernesto Ibañez, and Dan Lam, whose work features imagined realities.

Carlos Donjuan discovered his passion for art through cartoons, comic books, and graffiti art. These early influences remain evident in his art practice to this day, through imaginative creatures, masked figures, and vivid murals.

Angela Fox finds inspiration from myriad sources, including animation, quilting, and illuminated manuscripts. Her artwork focuses on the discovery of the self through a hero-warrior archetype, often featuring mighty, confident women in fantastical environments.

Ernesto Ibañez transforms ordinary materials, like carpentry nails, into detailed sculptures of animal-like forms. While some of Ibañez’s sculptures resemble real-life animals, others are enchanting animal hybrids or monsters.

Dan Lam manipulates foam and resin to create otherworldly sculptures inspired by nature and the human body. Vividly colorful and alluringly tactile, Lam’s sculptures are reminiscent of enticing, candy-colored desserts and mysterious, toxic sea creatures.

Beyond Reality is organized for the McNay Art Museum by Lauren Thompson, Assistant Curator; and Liz Paris, Collections Manager.

Funding is most generously provided by the Elizabeth Huth Coates Charitable Foundation of 1992.

Big Little Stage

May 25, 2023–February 25, 2024

Tobin Theatre Arts and Brown Galleries

Big Little Stage features artworks from the Tobin Collection of Theatre Arts to show how designers present creative visions for stage productions through small-scale and large-scale models called maquettes. Papier-mâché, fabric, and wood are used, as well as sleeker materials like stainless steel and plexiglass. Designers also add additional appeal and dimension to their maquettes with watercolors, graphite, and cardboard.

Big Little Stage features a miniature Hanging Gardens of Babylon (1860) by Victor St. Leon and a substantial ship’s prow by William Dudley for Billy Bud (1976). Pablo Picasso’s pastel maquette for Le Tricorne (1919) and Natalia Gontcharova’s petite model for Chota Roustaveli (1946) are as striking as larger designs like the Trojan Horse by Helen Pond and Herbert Senn for Les Troyens (1972), and a futuristic set by Ralph Koltai for Shakespeare’s Othello (1985).

Additional works on paper, sculptures, and paintings by Robert Motherwell, Lynn Chadwick, Jasper Johns, and more, from the McNay’s permanent collection enhance the exhibition experience. This includes Philip Grausman’s maquette for Victoria (1992)—a 16-inch model of the now 14-foot-high sculpture on the McNay’s grounds. Big Little Stage visitors might even find themselves standing “center stage” in the Tobin Theatre Arts Gallery on a fullscale set inspired by Joel Steinberg’s whimsical La Périchole (2013) maquette.

Big Little Stage is organized for the McNay Art Museum by R. Scott Blackshire, Ph.D., Curator, The Tobin Collection of Theatre Arts; and Kim Neptune, The Tobin Theatre Arts Fund Assistant Curator, The Tobin Collection of Theatre Arts.

This exhibition is a program of The Tobin Theatre Arts Fund.

The Art of Books

January 26–April 23, 2023

Butt Paperworks Gallery

This exhibition highlights some of the treasures of the McNay’s book collection which comprises rare volumes, historical texts, and artist-created books. Our collection sheds light on the different functions of some of the world’s greatest books. Wassily Kandinsky created Klänge (Sounds) as a work of art in which he explored his ideas of modernist abstraction. Kara Walker’s Freedom: A Fable is also a stand-alone work of art which explores the African American experience. Other books like the Encyclopédie edited by Denis Diderot, Vitruvius’s Ten Books on Architecture, and George Stubbs’s Anatomy of the Horse are works of art because of their importance in spreading scientific knowledge through compelling imagery and informative texts.

Among the rarely seen masterpieces in the show is the album of richly colored lithographs illustrating the coronation of the Russian Czar Alexander III. The scale of this book, the largest ever printed at the time of its publication in 1856, makes it challenging to show publicly.

The Art of Books is organized for the McNay Art Museum by Lyle W. Williams, Curator of Prints and Drawings, Curator of Modern Art; and Jeremiah Teutsch, Matting and Framing Technician.

Funding is most generously provided by The Jane and Arthur Stieren Fund for Exhibitions.

Off the Wall: Posters as Art

May 10–July 30, 2023

Butt Paperworks Gallery

For nearly 200 years the combination of imagery and text found on posters has served to advertise performances, goods and services, as well as political viewpoints. Mass-produced, using modern lithographic processes, posters originally had little or no value. They spurred the public’s interest before being discarded. Fortunately, some collectors saw the artistic value in these bits of ephemera that would otherwise have been lost and began preserving them.

The McNay is fortunate to have a small number of these works ranging from Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s posters promoting the cabaret appearances of the great 1890s Parisian stage impresario Aristide Bruant to Ben Shahn’s heartbreaking work which sought to open the eyes of the world to the atrocities of the Nazi regime in the 1940s.

The visual language of the poster has had a great influence on the art of the twentieth century and up to the present day, as seen in the works of Shepard Fairey which are also featured in the show. Other artists included are Alphonse Mucha, Pierre Bonnard, Joan Miró, and Angel Bracho.

A highlight of the exhibition is Charles Gesmar’s Mistinguett, which features an Art Deco portrait of the highest paid singer and actress of the 1920s. This recently acquired poster, one of the largest prints ever produced, is over ten feet tall.

Off the Wall: Posters as Art is organized for the McNay Art Museum by Lyle W. Williams, Curator of Prints and Drawings, Curator of Modern Art; and Jeremiah Teutsch, Matting and Framing Technician.
