The Board of Trustees is thrilled to share some wonderful news this season. Over the last few months, the McNay has received two grants in support of the Museum’s ongoing commitment to artistic excellence and engaging a diverse community in the discovery and enjoyment of the arts.

We would like to extend our sincerest thanks to the John R. and Greli N. Less Charitable Trust for a $250,000 grant for the acquisition of artwork by women artists of color for the McNay’s permanent collection. As a museum founded by a woman artist, this support will help the McNay Board and staff continue to build on Marion Koogler McNay’s legacy of championing women artists around the world.

In addition, we are honored to be one of 19 arts organizations across the country (and the only one in Texas) to receive a national grant through the Leadership in Art Museums (LAM) initiative. A partnership between the Alice L. Walton Foundation, Ford Foundation, Mellon Foundation, and Pilot House Philanthropy, the initiative provides funding to increase diversity in museum leadership roles.

At the McNay, this grant will support a new curatorial position focused on the Museum’s growing collection of Latinx artworks, and spotlight works by artists of Hispanic and Latinx descent. These important grants will help us to continue growing as San Antonio’s place of belonging.

DIRECTOR’S LETTER

Hello McNay Community,

As I near the end of my first six months at the McNay, I am experiencing a phenomenon that is new to me. I must constantly remind myself that I have only been here for a short time because it feels, in the best possible way, that I have been here for years. My only explanation for this feeling is that San Antonio and everyone involved with the McNay has been so incredibly kind and generous in welcoming me and my partner, Townes, that it feels like San Antonio has always been home. I am enormously grateful for the authentic hospitality that has greeted us.

I have spent my first months listening and learning about my new museum and my new city. A few patterns have emerged through these conversations that I would like to share. The first is that daily at least one person (frequently several) have shared with me their multigenerational relationship with the Museum and its role in various stages of their lives. I cannot think of a better metric demonstrating the museum’s importance to San Antonio. The second theme that has emerged is how pleased people are with the Museum’s commitment to opening itself up in new and innovative ways. This has taken a literal form in the opening up of our beautiful landscape and the growth of our sculpture garden, as well as in more figurative ways as we affirm that we are San Antonio’s “place of belonging” through programs like our Second Thursdays. The third recurring pattern is the deep admiration for our founder, Marion Koogler McNay, and the profoundly important collection she assembled to form a museum for her beloved city. Every person I have spoken with, both within the McNay team, and in the wider community has a very personal connection with one of the works in the collection and often use the phrase, “it’s like visiting an old friend.”

The question most asked of every new Director is “what is your vision?” I must admit to finding this a little uncomfortable. Any vision for the McNay moving forward cannot be “my vision.” To be authentic and successful it must be “our vision.” The vision must be shared by my remarkable colleagues at the McNay, our dedicated Board of Trustees, our members, our donors, and the wider communities that we engage. So, in leading the conversation shaping “our vision,” the persistent themes above will be what I return to as I look for guidance. I feel they are among the most important as they illuminate what makes the McNay a truly special place in the lives of so many.

Being named the fourth Director and CEO of the McNay is the great privilege of my life. I look forward to continuing to learn from and work beside each of you as we build the future of the McNay ensuring it remains at the heart of generations of San Antonians to come.

I’ll see you in the galleries!

Yours sincerely,

The McNay Board of Trustees proudly welcomes Katherine Sosa as a new Trustee. Kathy is an independent marketing professional, political design consultant, and artist. Her creative work has earned national awards for advertising excellence in both television and print. Prior to forming Sosa Consultation & Design with her husband Lionel, Kathy served as president of Garcia•LKS, the Southwest’s largest independent Hispanic ad agency, which she founded as KJN in 1987. Kathy holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in political science, both from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio.

A renowned artist, Kathy received national recognition for her traveling exhibition Huipiles: a Celebration. The exhibition debuted at the Mexican Cultural Institute in Washington, DC as part of the Smithsonian Latino Center’s 2007 summer season before traveling to San Antonio’s Museo Alameda in 2008. In 2011, Children of the Revolución: How the Mexican Revolution Changed America’s Destiny, Kathy and Lionel’s acclaimed documentary, aired on San Antonio’s KLRN. The documentary chronicles the never-before-told American history of the Texas/Mexico borderland. In 2021, she was selected to create work for two public art projects: a five-panel tile mural for San Pedro Creek Culture Park titled La Gloriosa Historia de San Pedro Creek for Bexar County and the San Antonio River Authority (along with Lionel); as well as a mural for Maverick Plaza at La Villita called La Santa Gastronomía de San Antonio for the City of San Antonio Department of Arts and Culture.

Dreamland | Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas

August 17, 2023–January 14, 2024

Tobin Exhibition Galleries

Be our ghoul of honor at an exhibition hosted by creatures lured from the depths of the McNay Art Museum’s collection. Dreamland | Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas marks the 30th anniversary of filmmaker Tim Burton’s 1993 stop-motion animated film.

In the exhibition, visitors can reacquaint themselves with Burton’s awkwardly charming cast that includes Oogie Boogie, Bone Crusher, and the beloved hero, Jack Skellington. And meet unusual characters created by artists from the McNay’s collection, including José Clemente Orozco Farías, Julie Heffernan, Eugene Berman, Marilyn Lanfear, Willem de Kooning, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Julie Speed, and others. Visitors can explore colorful and unfamiliar worlds found in large paintings and photographs by artists Paul Maxwell, Claudia Rogge, Robin Utterback, and Sandy Skoglund.

Small models (or maquettes) created for Burton’s iconic film in conversation with a range of artworks, encourage guests to imagine fantasy narratives of their own. And with a nod to Burton’s creative roots at Walt Disney, explore a “hall of peculiar portraits” that will have you wondering—is that picture looking at me?

Dreamland | Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas is organized for the McNay Art Museum by R. Scott Blackshire, PhD, Curator, The Tobin Collection of Theatre Arts; and Kim Neptune, The Tobin Theatre Arts Fund Assistant Curator, The Tobin Collection of Theatre Arts.

Major support is provided by The Tobin Endowment. Additional funding is most generously provided by The Tobin Theatre Arts Fund, the Semmes Foundation, Inc., and our Exhibition Host Committee Chaired by Mr. and Mrs. J. Bruce Bugg Jr.

McNay commissions Alice Aycock’s Devil Whirls

Through the generous support of the Russell Hill Rogers Fund for the Arts, the McNay commissioned renowned American sculptor and installation artist Alice Aycock to create a monumental new artwork for the recently enhanced campus. Aycock’s work came to the forefront as part of the land art movement of the 1970s, and since then she has created numerous large metal sculptures installed around the world. Like many of the artist’s sculptures and drawings, Devil Whirls combines logic, imagination, science, engineering, and magical thinking.

In the summer of 2022, the artist visited the McNay to determine a location for Devil Whirls. The sculpture is located at the head of the North New Braunfels Avenue entrance, greeting visitors as they arrive at the Museum. Sited among a group of trees, the artwork’s white metal swirls contrast the surrounding landscape.

Prior to the Aycock commission, the Russell Hill Rogers Fund for the Arts supported other acquisitions of important outdoor works by Willie Cole, Luis Jiménez, Alexander Liberman, George Rickey, Kiki Smith, and others, facilitating the growth of the McNay’s collection on the 25-acre campus.

de la Torre Brothers: Post-Columbian Futurism

September 15, 2023–September 15, 2024

AT&T Lobby

Since the 1990s, brothers Einar and Jamex de la Torre have cultivated a signature style that combines blown glass sculptures, installation, lenticular prints, and wallpaper, among other materials and techniques. Their creative approach is additive, constantly combining and expanding meaning using imagery drawn from a range of influences including Catholic iconography, German Expressionism, Mexican vernacular arts, and Ancient American artifacts. For the McNay, the brothers combine trompe l’oeil wallpaper with lenticular images, transforming the AT&T Lobby wall. In March 2024, the McNay will present a large survey of the brothers’ art, including new artworks created especially for the exhibition.

October 14, 2023–April 14, 2024

McNay Grounds

Austin-based Orly Genger activates the McNay Sculpture Garden with a sprawling work of art composed from brightly painted recycled lobster rope. Genger is known for her vibrant site-based interactive sculptures including those seen at New York City’s Madison Square Park and Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, where the artist completed her bachelor of arts degree. Through her sculptural interventions, Genger explores issues of femininity and women’s work by incorporating weaving and knotting as part of her artistic practice. The artist’s sculpture refers to political and social concerns, while being tactile, playful, and inviting to the public.

Orly Genger: Stomping Ground is organized for the McNay Art Museum by René Paul Barilleaux, Head of Curatorial Affairs; and Lauren Thompson, Curator of Exhibitions. Eye of a Collector: The John M. Parker Jr. Bequest

November 8, 2023–March 3, 2024 Lawson Print Gallery

A native of San Antonio, John Parker’s fascination with artworks that challenge notions of what art is began in professor Bob Tiemann’s lectures at Trinity University in the 1970s. This early fascination became a lifelong passion for Parker and inspired him to become one of the most important collectors of minimalist and conceptual art in Texas. Parker was a visionary collector who recognized emerging talent. He regularly acquired several works by an artist in whom he had a particularly strong interest. The first of two exhibitions to highlight his bequest, this exhibition features work by artists on whom he focused during his five decades as a dedicated collector.

Eye of a Collector: The John M. Parker Jr. Bequest is organized for the McNay Art Museum by Lyle W. Williams, Curator of Prints and Drawings, Curator of Modern Art.

Prints and Drawings by Contemporary Black Artists

December 13, 2023–March 17, 2024 Butt Paperworks Gallery

The 2006 acquisition of a large group of prints by Atlanta-based artist Radcliffe Bailey jumpstarted the McNay’s collection of prints and drawings by contemporary Black American artists. Since that time, the Museum has sought to represent not only the important individual voices of Black artists but also their immeasurable contributions to American art history. The collection now houses an important and growing group of artworks by Derrick Adams, Letitia Huckaby, Sedrick Huckaby, Samuel Levi Jones, Kara Walker, and Stanley Whitney, among others.

Highlights of the exhibition include a recently acquired print suite by Kara Walker, whose work addresses our nation’s legacy of slavery, and a print suite by Derrick Adams, whose work celebrates the enjoyment of life in the face of intolerance and adversity. Walker and Adams speak to the diversity and complexity of the Black experience in the United States, as will all of the works in this presentation.

Spotlight: San Antonio’s K–12 Artists Embrace vanessa german’s BLACK GIRL WITH SNAKES

On view through April 28, 2024

Patio Gallery

Since 2011, Spotlight has celebrated the remarkable achievements of student artists reflecting on one work in the McNay collection. This year, over a thousand students from 38 San Antonio area schools created works of art in various media in response to vanessa german’s BLACK GIRL WITH SNAKES. The altarpiece, as german calls it, is a reflection on renewal and rebirth that she created during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The artist combined a variety of found objects including mirrors, silk flowers, artificial fruit, bird figurines, and fake snakes to make the assemblage.

The McNay showcased all 267 works of art during the Spotlight celebration in May 2023. The festivities were heavily attended by teachers, students, and their families. Selections of inspiring student art will rotate in a series of three presentations through April 28, 2024.

Funding is most generously provided by the Texas Commission on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts, the Kronkosky Charitable Foundation, The William Randolph Hearst Fund for Education Programs, and the Louis A. and Francis B. Wagner Endowment.

Each year, the Studio features two temporary installations with regional artists who create an engaging dialogue between their artwork and objects from the McNay’s collection.

Guadalupe Hernandez’s work speaks to the richness of cultural identity and the fluid nature of traditions. Hernandez’s use of traditional methods and tools pay homage to the Mexican artisans who have created papel picado for generations.

McNay in the Digital Spotlight this Summer

The McNay was in the spotlight this summer after making a splash on Threads, the new Meta social media platform. The Museum was featured in articles by Texas Monthly, Axios, and San Antonio Express News. Director and CEO Matthew McLendon shared, “The beauty of what our social media accounts are doing is that it shows the other side of the McNay. We want to be San Antonio’s place of belonging for all people. You might be there to learn and engage with the visual arts, but you can also have fun. Museums are built for the sound of laughter, too.”
