de la Torre Brothers: Upward Mobility Leader
Messages 70th Anniversary

DIRECTOR’S LETTER

Dear Friends,

This issue of Impressions is filled with pride for our expanding community, stellar collection, and unique experiences. As always, our commitment is to deepen our collection’s impact and to deliver captivating programs, events, and exhibitions like the stunning de la Torre Brothers: Upward Mobility. We are happy that you are a vital part of this!

The past year has brought important acquisitions that reflect and celebrate the community. Most recently, Mi Chicano Corazon by Einar and Jamex de la Torre, featured on the cover, became part of our permanent collection. We’re proud to be home to such a resonant piece that captures the complexities of dual American and Mexican identities. We also announce the inclusion of Nivia Gonzalez’s Untitled, a gift from her daughters that pays tribute to Gonzalez’s deep roots in San Antonio and her significant contributions to the community. Fausto Fernandez’s Burden Narratives While Stuck in Traffic in Pursuit of an Obligation at the Port of Entry is another dynamic piece chosen by our community at last fall’s Collecting Texas: El Paso.

As we grow, the McNay welcomes new members to its leadership team, who bring fresh perspectives and innovative ideas to our cherished institution. These visionary leaders are committed to expanding our financial resources, creating innovative educational programs, enhancing visitor experiences, and amplifying important stories about the McNay. I am energized by them and look forward to working together to ensure that every guest encounters something inspiring.

2024 is particularly special as we celebrate the 70th anniversary of the McNay Art Museum. We follow our founder, Marion Koogler McNay, whose vision brought artistic excellence to our community. As we honor our past, we eagerly look forward to the future of art in our community. We invite you to join us in this celebration and to be part of the continuing story of the McNay.

I hope to see you in galleries and at upcoming events, including the all-new 1954 film series kicking off this summer to celebrate the year the Museum opened. Plus, catch our signature events this fall like Second Thursday, Storytime Flow, and Collecting Texas: Houston.

Thank you for your steadfast support and enthusiasm. We look forward to welcoming you and celebrating the transformative power of art together.

Warm regards,

BOARD PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

In 2024, we reflect on the Museum’s 70-year anniversary and look ahead at the incredible possibilities for continued impact. The Board of Trustees is excited for the community to celebrate this milestone with an array of activities throughout the year. From Founder’s Day, to the McNay’s 70th Anniversary Gala, to the launch of a digital guide on Bloomberg Connects, we are proud to keep the Museum’s legacy of transformational art experiences going strong.

We are charged with ensuring that the vision of our founder Marion Koogler McNay is at the forefront of all we do. Since opening its doors seventy years ago, the Museum has created space for diverse voices in the arts—to be San Antonio’s place of belonging. As you peruse this issue of Impressions, you’ll see that legacy shine through each story. This important work underscores our vibrant past and paves a path for our thriving future. Thank you for being part of our history.

de la Torre Brothers: Upward Mobility

On view through September 15, 2024

Tobin Exhibition Galleries

Collaborating brothers Einar and Jamex de la Torre make their San Antonio solo exhibition debut with de la Torre Brothers: Upward Mobility. Works in the exhibition showcase the brothers’ signature style, combining blown glass sculpture, lenticular prints, video, installation, and other materials and techniques in unexpected ways. The exhibition explores the complexities and contradictions of dual American and Mexican identities, a product of the brothers’ life and work on both sides of the border. They have studios and create artwork in both Baja California, Mexico and San Diego. The exhibition is dedicated to Tomás Ybarra-Frausto.

CELEBRATING 70 YEARS OF ART AND COMMUNITY

In celebration of the McNay’s 70th anniversary, the Museum honors its history and founder, Marion Koogler McNay (February 7, 1883–April 12, 1950), through an array of events, programs, storytelling, partnerships, and activations throughout 2024.

The anniversary celebration kicked off with Founder’s Day in February. The commemoration will continue through the summer with a 1954 film series and will culminate in November in celebration of the opening month of the Museum in 1954.

In addition to events, the McNay launched new initiatives that build upon generations of pride and transformative art experiences, including a new digital guide on Bloomberg Connects, a McNay Stories and #McNay70 campaign, and commemorative merchandise. We are pleased to open our doors wider to the community, bringing together rich programming and perspectives to imagine what’s possible in the decades to come.

Coinciding with the Museum’s 70th anniversary, related milestone celebrations include the 40th anniversary of the Tobin Wing; the 90th birthday anniversary of the late Robert L. B. Tobin, namesake of the Tobin Collection of Theatre Arts; and the 60th anniversary of the McNay’s docent program.

Tobin Distinguished Lecture with Fiesta

FIRST CURATOR OF LATINX ART

The McNay Art Museum welcomed Mia Lopez as its first Curator of Latinx Art on October 2, 2023. An expert in working with living artists, Lopez works in many curatorial areas and collaborates cross-departmentally to expand and infuse representation of Latinx artists throughout the McNay, with a particular focus on acquisitions, exhibitions, and programming.

The new position is funded by the Leadership in Art Museums (LAM) initiative, which is designed to help museums increase racial equity in leadership roles. The initiative is funded by the Alice L. Walton Foundation, the Ford Foundation, the Mellon Foundation and Pilot House Philanthropy. The McNay is the only museum in Texas to be granted the award.

Since joining the McNay, Lopez has immersed herself in the Museum’s extensive collection of Latinx art and has jumpstarted conversations on the complexities of American art. Recent projects include assisting with the organization of de la Torre

Brothers: Upward Mobility; leading “The Latinx Lens in American Art” talk with Marcela Guerrero, DeMartini Family Curator at the Whitney Museum of American Art; and organizing her first exhibition, Rasquachismo: 35 Years of a Chicano Sensibility, opening in December 2024.

“What I’m really excited to do is to build off of the 70-year legacy of the museum, which really has, in its foundation, a great reverence for Latin American, specifically Mexican, art,” Lopez said. “I’m really excited to take this into a new generation, where we’re thinking about Latinx art as American art.”

She has previously held curatorial positions at the Walker Art Center (Minneapolis) and DePaul Art Museum (Chicago). Lopez received a B.A. in Art History from Rice University and M.A. degrees in Modern and Contemporary Art History, Theory and Criticism and Arts Administration and Policy from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

A HEARTFELT THANK YOU TO LYLE W. WILLIAMS

Lyle W. Williams, a longtime pillar of the McNay community, retired from the Museum in February 2024, having served as Curator of Prints and Drawings, Curator of Modern Art. We are grateful for Williams’ 32 years of transformational service and dedication to the McNay and our community.

Williams joined the McNay following his graduate studies at Yale in 1992. Over the decades, he built one of the premier works on paper collections in the United States and guided collectors throughout San Antonio. The McNay Print Fair, which celebrated its 28th edition in May, was one of Williams’ many lasting achievements.

Williams’ tenure at the McNay was particularly distinguished through his long relationships with collectors. Williams played a key role in Harriet and

Ricardo Romo’s gift of Chicano prints to the Museum, which constitutes one of the largest collections of its type in the United States. He also stewarded the bequest of John M. Parker, Jr. with the Parker Collection, positioning the McNay as one of the most important repositories of minimalist and conceptualist prints in the country.

Williams is graciously continuing to work as a contributor to a major planned publication documenting the Parker Collection, and he will always have a home at the McNay as a scholar, contributor, and friend.

On view through July 14, 2024 the Studio

the Studio is a multiuse, interactive space where visitors can relax, recharge, and engage with a variety of artwork and activities while learning about the permanent collection. Each year, the Studio features two temporary installations of artwork by regional artists who collaborate with McNay educators to create a series of community workshops based on their studio practice.

Artist Verónica Castillo is part of a heartfelt generational lineage of ceramic artists from Izúcar de Matamoros, Puebla, México who collectively construct traditional Arbol de la Vida clay sculptures that document the legacies from one generation to the next. Castillo has created her own style from that of her ancestry and her installation at the McNay, En Raizada en Cuatro Generaciones (Rooted in Four Generations), shows a timeline of sculptures from her great-grandparents, her grandparents, her mother and father, and herself.

Artists Looking at Art: Juan Carlos Escobedo

On view through July 28, 2024 Octagon

The McNay’s Artists Looking at Art (ALA) series celebrates the vitality of the San Antonio contemporary art community with an installation by Juan Carlos Escobedo.

Juan Carlos Escobedo explores his identity as a queer, brown Mexican-American, who was raised in a low-socioeconomic community along the U.S.-Mexico border. Drawing from his upbringing in El Paso, Texas, his work addresses class and race shame that arises from living in a predominantly white structured environment that favors lightskinned individuals and middle- and upper-classes. This installation, conceived for the alcove in the McNay’s Frost Octagon, resembles a retail clothing display, complete with the artist’s designer logo tags. Miniature tableaux covering the clothing’s surfaces depict clear contrasts in residential architecture. Socioeconomic disparities are emphasized by the artist’s use of brown cardboard to create houses familiar in border communities in contrast to white houses inspired by historic and classical structures.

SELECT ACQUISITIONS

Fausto Fernandez’s work was selected by popular vote at Collecting Texas: El Paso, an annual event that brings the community together to take part in the acquisition process as the McNay expands its collection of works by artists from around the state of Texas.

Thank you to our attendees and sponsors for making this acquisition possible. Sponsors include: (Title Sponsors) Corinna and J.B. Richter; (Collector Sponsors) Connie McCombs McNab, Rico’s Products (Curator Sponsors) Joanie and J.R. Hurd, Carolyn and Allan Paterson (Connoisseur Sponsors) Liz and Bill Chiego, Jane Stieren Lacy, Paul Martin, Cynthia and Forrest Miller, Anne and Chuck Parrish.

Nivia Gonzalez was a San Antonio native, well known for providing cover art for books by Sandra Cisneros and Alice Walker. Described by family as an “everywhere artist,” Gonzalez’s work could be found all over the city, from restaurants to museums to the Bexar County Jail, where she organized an inmate-led mural project for the Pope’s visit in 1987 while serving as the Bexar County Jail Arts Program director.

This untitled work invites the viewer into an interior with a tabletop ofrenda (devotional offering), presided over by a serene Virgin of Guadalupe and a crescent moon outside. At once vibrant and tranquil, mysterious and familiar, Gonzalez’s work reverberates with quiet but powerful symbolism.

McNay Stories

Nivia Gonzalez’s daughters, Selena Watson and Regina Antelo, discuss donating the painting to the McNay, which serves as a tribute to the late artist’s roots in this community and a beacon of inspiration for generations to come.
