DIRECTOR’S LETTER

In crafting my final Director’s Letter for Impressions, I found myself beaming with joy and pride over all we have accomplished—together—these last six years. In January, I will move on from my role as your proud Director and CEO and join my partner of ten years, Max Goodman, in California. And I take with me the fondest memories of and greatest learnings from all of you—the mighty supporters and ambassadors of the finest art museum experience I have witnessed anywhere.

With your support, that of a brilliant Board and staff, and unprecedented support from our nation’s largest arts funders, we increased visibility of underrepresented communities in our globally renowned collection and awardwinning exhibitions, created a sustainable business model that enabled us to thrive in a global pandemic, and retained and expanded one of the most outstanding teams I have had the privilege of collaborating with on our mission, our vision, and the McNay’s 2020-2024 Strategic Plan.

For six years, we have delivered on a noble mission of engaging everyone at the McNay through the joy and discovery of the visual arts; this fall, as we move even closer to becoming San Antonio’s place of belonging, will be no exception. We will soon open two community-empowering exhibitions in the Tobin Exhibition Galleries of the Stieren Center—True Believers: Benny Andrews & Deborah Roberts and Margarita Cabrera: Blurring Borders. We will inaugurate two celebrations of the art of modern and contemporary collage in our Butt Paperworks Gallery and Lawson Print Gallery. And together we will get in the spirit of Halloween with a presentation of the art of Wicked and other theatre designs by the Tony Award-winning designer Susan Hilferty in our Tobin Theatre Arts and Brown Galleries. Our fall exhibition lineup exemplifies the Museum’s commitment to excellence and community impact with spellbinding representations of the many identities, experiences, and interests that define us as San Antonians.

This fall, the McNay also features its newest community engagement gallery, the Studio. Located in the Museum’s AT&T Lobby, this interactive space brings our mission to life, connecting our collection and our visitors in innovative, experiential ways. To help us realize that we can all be artists and creators at the McNay, inaugural San Antonio-based Studio artist Soomin Jung Remmler draws that connection through inspiring visions of home.

I conclude this message with gratitude for you—beloved members of the Museum family. It has been a profound honor serving you and San Antonio for six amazing years through the work of the first modern art museum in Texas. The McNay is extraordinary, and next year, under a new director, it will reach even greater heights thanks to you.

Yours with boundless gratitude, Richard Aste Director and CEO

Modern Mashup: Collecting Collage

October 20, 2022–January 8, 2023

Collage played a crucial role in the development of modernism in the early 20th century. The exhibition features artwork by José Bernal, Henry Botkin, and Stephanie Kirschen-Cole, among others.

Modern Mashup: Collecting Collage is organized for the McNay Art Museum by Rafael Fernando Gutierrez Jr., the inaugural Douglass Foundation Intern in Curatorial Studies; and Lyle W. Williams, Curator of Prints and Drawings, Curator of Modern Art.

HANK WILLIS THOMAS SCULPTURE ACQUISITION

Snails might be known for their leisurely pace, but the McNay’s newest outdoor addition has rapidly become a visitor favorite. History of the Conquest by Hank Willis Thomas features a child holding a bow and reins while atop an ornately decorated snail. Thomas is a conceptual artist whose works address themes related to social issues, identity, consumerism, and popular culture. Installed on the Mays Family Park near the Russell Hill Rogers Sculpture Gateway, the Museum’s recent acquisition stands just over seven feet tall.

This acquisition was made possible thanks to very generous support from Ben Foster in memory of beloved McNay supporter Raye B. Foster.
