Healthy Lawns, Healthy Streams

Fall is a great time to have your lawn or garden soil tested! A soil test will provide guidance to keep your lawn or garden in tip top shape and looking great! At the same time, you’ll be protecting drinking water supplies and the health of our streams and rivers. Why fall? It’s the time to get soil tests results so you can make recommended fertilizer, lime, or nutrient amendments and be ready for spring. GET A KIT Pick up a soil testing kit at the County Cooperative Extension office located at the Montgomery County Government Center: 755 Roanoke Street, Suite 1G Christiansburg, VA 24073

USING A TESTING KIT Visit www.soiltest.vt.edu. Select the Sampling Instructions, Report Notes, and Fees and Forms links to learn more about taking samples and what information you can expect to receive. COST FOR ANALYSIS It is only $10 for a comprehensive analysis of your soil nutrients and pH, P, K, Ca, Mg, Zn, Mn, Cu, Fe, B, and estimated CEC, plus a fertilizer and lime recommendation.

MORE INFORMATION Kelli Scott, Extension Agent - kescott@vt.edu, 540-382-5790

Save Money, Improve Water Quality! Purple cone flowers are an example of native species that require less fertilizer and pesticides than many non-native flowers. Lawn and garden activities can result in sediment, nutrient, and bacterial contamination of stormwater through soil, pesticide, and fertilizer runoff. These pollutants hurt our streams. Proper landscape management can effectively reduce water use as well as fertilizer and pesticide costs, while improving the health and beauty of your lawn and landscape. This message is part of Montgomery County’s Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) permit requirements to provide public education and outreach on relevant stormwater issues.
