Helping students to reach their potential

Wesley College supports its boarding students to kick goals in the classroom and in life.

One of these students is Sophia Varley, an accomplished soccer keeper and defender, who was signed by Melbourne City Football Club earlier this year. The Year 12 student, who boards at Wesley College, said donning the City Blue jersey was nothing short of a dream come true. From her family’s livestock farm at Finley in southern NSW, to life at Wesley’s Learning in Residence (LiR) in Glen Waverley in Melbourne’s east, Sophia is certainly kicking goals on the soccer field and in the classroom. Sophia credits the support she received at Wesley College with helping her on her way to this success. The LiR program is designed on learner-centred principles and has helped Sophia progress as an athlete while maintaining high academic standards. As a boarder, Sophia has access to extensive sporting facilities including gyms, swimming pools and pitches, as well as round-theclock support from teachers and mentors, all which have helped her progress with her sporting goals and academic development. “Living on campus definitely has it perks, from waking up to soccer fields on my doorstep to only travelling 40 minutes to get to training compared to the six-hour roundtrips I used to endure multiple times a week, while also studying,” she said. “Boarding on campus just makes life so much easier; everything is so accessible, and it gives me more time to apply myself in other areas.” A typical day for Sophia in LiR starts with breakfast served in the dining hall, followed by classes, study and afternoon sport. She also has opportunities to try her hand at performing arts and other cocurricular activities. LiR for Sophia has also been about celebrating diversity as a part of her learning experience. “During our weekly residence meetings, I learn a lot, get insights into a variety of di erent cultures and even learn some languages! This has definitely helped me shape the way I perceive the world.” The LiR sta place equal amounts of emphasis on academic, social and emotional wellbeing — inside and outside the classroom. One of the most exciting changes for the boarders at LiR this year has been new private Year 12 rooms,

and it gets a big thumbs up from Sophia as well. “The new Year 12 rooms make studying so much easier with plenty of room to spread your books out or study downstairs with my roommates. “While having our own rooms is also a bonus, it also provides an escape area for when you’re feeling overwhelmed or stressed.” Find out more about Wesley’s Learning in Residence boarding program at: wesleycollege.edu.au
