FALL IN LOVE WITH KYABRAM There’s so much to see and do in Kyabram. The whole family can hand-feed some native wildlife and visit the Tasmanian devils at the Kyabram Fauna Park. With the second-largest collection of Australian fauna in Victoria, you can have up-close encounters with kangaroos, emus and all sorts of bird varieties in the park’s free-range enclosures. You’ll spend hours enjoying the beautiful grounds and wetlands that are home to more than 600 species, and once you’re tired out, relax with a cup of coffee and a delicious meal in the park’s café. Enjoy the local arts scene at the Kyabram Town Hall. Built in the 1890s, the freshly refurbished hall is not only a beautiful historical site — it’s also home to brilliant exhibitions from talented regional artists. And if you’re on the silo art trail, check out the Kyabram water tank mural from the newly constructed Kyabram Mural Platform. The observation deck that looks out on the water tank mural was once the dilapidated Kyabram Railway Station. And if you feel like exploring the district to delve into the region’s gold-mining history, visit the Whroo Historic Reserve — just 7 km south of Rushworth. A thriving mining town in the 1850s, Whroo is now a ghost town. 6

KYABRAM AND DISTRICT Tourist Guide 2022–2023

An extensive network of tracks through the forest allows you to explore the key mining sites that were active during the original goldrush, while wildflowers and wattles provide spectacular displays during spring. Declared a Legendairy Capital in 2015, Stanhope has a dairy farming history that is woven indelibly into the fabric of the town. This is reflected in a 48 m x 5 m photo mural composed of more than 11,000 photographs contributed by Stanhope residents, located on the northern wall of the Stanhope Fonterra cheese plant. Themed ‘Legendairy Stanhope — Proud People, Proud Community’, the mural celebrates Stanhope’s cheesemaking history dating back to the 1920s, along with a rural community known for its dairy farms and agricultural abundance. And head over to Tongala to check out the more than 50 murals that tell the town’s history and cultural stories. Grab a delicious lunch at the bakery and check out the outdoor mural garden gallery that depicts the significance of the Goulburn River to the town. Have a free weekend? A wide range of local markets offer the ideal distraction. Featuring local produce, live music, clothing, jewellery, plants and more, the Girgarre Farmers’ Produce and Craft Market and the Stanhope Monster Garage Sale are held on the second Sunday of each month. The Rushworth Community Market is on the third Saturday of each month.

And watch out for the Girgarre chook auction — where you may just find a new feathered friend. Not only is Girgarre a local market hub. It’s the home of music. On the fourth Saturday of each month from February to November, musicians swarm from across the district for Jigarre Jammin’ — a musical phenomenon where more than 70 musos gather for a jam. Plus the Girgarre Moosic Muster in April and the Kyabram Country Music Festival in November will keep your toes tapping. And those aren’t the only annual events on offer in Kyabram and surrounds throughout the year. Check out the Kyabram Rodeo for a fantastic evening when some of the best riders in Australia converge to test their mettle against some bucking broncos and bulls. Other fantastic annual shows, markets and expos include a bridal expo, a travel expo, the A, H & P Society Annual Kyabram Show, the Kyabram Salami Muster, the Tongala Community Garage Sale, the Kyabram Bush Market, the Rushworth Easter Heritage Festival, the Kyabram Car, Bike and Tattoo Show and the Gift Monster Garage Sale and Purple Weekends (both supporting families with cancer). And the fun doesn’t stop once Christmas hits, with Santa’s Cave at the town hall and the Kyabram Chamber of Commerce Gala Night and Fireworks both in the lead-up to Christmas. Plus the yarn bombers decorate the main strip, Allan St, with colourful crochet that puts the town in the Christmas spirit. KYABRAM AND DISTRICT Tourist Guide 2022–2023

GET CLOSE TO NATIVE ANIMALS The Kyabram Fauna Park is the perfect destination for families, where kids can see more than 600 native Australian animals including Tasmanian devils, koalas, kangaroos, emus, dingoes, cassowaries, echidnas, flying foxes, wombats, wallabies, quolls, snakes, lizards, crocodiles, turtles, native birds and more.

“We’re working hard to make Kyabram Fauna Park northern Victoria’s premier wildlife park,” manager Lachlan Gordon said. He said new encounters gave people a “unique experience and the opportunity to learn more about some of Australia’s magnificent wildlife”. The newly renovated Tasmanian Devil Precinct at the park is where the two adorable marsupials, Polly and Violet, will take up residence. >> KYABRAM AND DISTRICT Tourist Guide 2022–2023

9

>> The public will be able to view them alongside Echi, the short-beaked echidna, and Lance, the lace monitor. Lachlan said they had acquired 56 species over the past three years, and 92 animals were born in the past two years, so there were plenty of juvenile animals to visit. There are many opportunities to get up close to Australian native wildlife. Kids can feed kangaroos, wallabies and emus in the free-ranging section of the park, with food pellets available to buy at reception upon arrival. And if you stand still in the aviaries for long enough, the native birds in the enclosures will land on you — especially if you have food for them. However, some cheeky birds are known for being a little too friendly! A notorious feathered resident of Kyabram Fauna Park is still around and is as mischievous as ever. Naughty Cocky has been knocking about for more than 40 years, and in that time she has caused some chaos. “She’ll basically come down and fly into your lap, and if you’ve got a handbag she’ll go through it and pull everything out,” Lachlan said. Kids can also enjoy unique experiences with cassowaries, dingoes and koalas by taking part in wildlife encounters, where they join a behind-thescenes tour, hear educational talks from qualified keepers and have a unique experience with some beautiful animals. 10 KYABRAM AND DISTRICT Tourist Guide 2022–2023

Come face-to-face with the world’s most dangerous birds during a Cassowary Encounter. You’ll be able to hand-feed these modern-day dinosaurs a fruity feast and witness their power up close in this breathtaking encounter. You can join gorgeous Alpine dingoes Dipa and Yula and their keepers on one of their daily walks through the park in the Dingo Encounter. You’ll never forget this fantastic experience to get up close to Australia’s apex predator and see the amazing bond they have with their keepers. They’re very friendly and curious, and they love to lick. You can meet the iconic koala at the Koala Encounter, which includes opportunities to feed and pat this marvellous marsupial. You’ll get a tour of all the koala enclosures and see the cuddly koalas up close. Each encounter runs for about 20 minutes and costs $30 per person. Bookings are essential and can be made at reception by calling 5852 2883 or emailing enquiries@kyabramfaunapark.com.au Kyabram Fauna Park members receive 10 per cent off these encounters. There are also more than 250 species of native plants, grasses and trees in the park. Lachlan said staff worked hard to preserve the natural native environment and were constantly working to maintain the delicate ecosystem. KYABRAM AND DISTRICT Tourist Guide 2022–2023 11

Cruise into Ky for Country Music

KYABRAM AND DISTRICT Tourist Guide 2022–2023 13

>>

After a two-year hiatus, the muchloved Kyabram RV Country Music Festival is back in 2022. In early November, RVs from across Australia will cruise into Kyabram for the week-long festival, with a bounty of exciting country music acts confirmed to perform over the weekend. So, if you’re looking for a friendly town to visit while enjoying an assortment of country music acts alongside fellow travellers, why not stopover in Kyabram? 14 KYABRAM AND DISTRICT Tourist Guide 2022–2023

Held at Kyabram Showgrounds, the event runs over five days — from Wednesday, November 2 to Sunday, November 6 — and will incorporate the town’s popular annual bush market in the main street on Friday, November 4. Despite still being considered a newcomer on the festival circuit, it has become a favourite among RV and caravan enthusiasts, as well as country music fans far and wide. Open mic nights will be on offer on weeknights for those keen to belt out their favourite tunes, while a poets’ breakfast will take place on

the Sunday morning for those wanting a little nourishment for their souls. Acts this year include many of the stars of previous years, with award-winning duo Ged and Tracy Huntz, talented Australian singer/ songwriter Sharron Benjamen and Australian Country Music Hall of Famer Don Costa all making an appearance. The festival has steadily grown since it began in 2012, with thousands making the journey to Kyabram for the event each year. Friday 10th March. 2023

RODEO IS BACK IN THE SADDLE If longevity was the only measure of an event’s success, then the Kyabram Rodeo would be one of the best in the country. Of course longevity is not the only measure, but the Ky rodeo is still among Australia’s finest. Launched in 1946, the rodeo is held on the Friday of the Labour Day long weekend in March. As were many events in Victoria, it was not held in 2021 due to COVID-19, but it has been a staple on Australia’s rodeo circuit since it was first held in 1946. “Ky’s just been so supportive of the event,“ rodeo committee secretary Janelle McDonald said. “I’ve been doing it the last 36–37 years and it’s just been so well supported. “It’s a great atmosphere and once you get it in your blood, you can’t get it out of you. “It’s a family friendly event. We like to run it as family friendly. There’s plenty of sideshows for the kids to have a go on and spend mum and dad’s money on and the action, it’s absolutely amazing and brilliant.” The rodeo is a Friday night event and part of a tri-series with rodeos in Merrijig (Saturday) and Chiltern (Sunday) over the long weekend.

It attracts competitors from all over Australia, and also from the professional ranks in Canada and the United States. KYABRAM AND DISTRICT Tourist Guide 2022–2023 17

When the country

COMES TO TOWN As an event that has aimed to help link the country with the town for almost 100 years, the Kyabram Agricultural Show remains as relevant as ever, so save the date as it is coming back on October 21 2023. COVID-19 may have prevented shows being held in 2020 and 2021, but it has also helped bring a new audience to Kyabram. The influx of tree-changers to the region gives the show new traction as a means of introducing a new audience to the array of livestock and activities that have long held an important place in the region. 18 KYABRAM AND DISTRICT Tourist Guide 2022–2023

“Our show is our number one event,” Kyabram Agricultural, Horticultural and Pastoral Society secretary Janelle McDonald said. “The show is agriculture, horticulture. It’s promoting country to the townies. “We like to make it a family event. No alcohol at all. A lot of horse events, arts and crafts, poultry.” Janelle said people were increasingly removed from the agriculture sector and the show was a great way for them to reconnect with producers, their animals and the various competitions that are held. “We’re getting a lot of Melbourne people moving up into the town so we need to make it more attractive for them and help them get to know the area they’ve moved into,” she said. Janelle said the secret to the show’s success was the great support it had received from the Kyabram region over the event’s history, and this year that backing will be appreciated even more so. “We missed the past two year’s shows, in 2020 and 2021,” she said. “So we have a lot of making up to do. We really struggled through COVID because we own our own land and we still had the bills coming in, but no revenue. “The more people through the gates, the better the day is. Come along and make it a really fun event.” KYABRAM AND DISTRICT Tourist Guide 2022–2023 19

Food AND Music SPRING INTO LIFE

Enjoy the tastes of Kyabram’s best eateries and the sweet sounds of local musical talent at the Kyabram Taste and Tunes on October 22. Held for the first time, Kyabram Taste and Tunes will bring the community together for a night market, which will showcase what the town has to offer. Alongside local music and food, there will also be activities for the kids, making it the perfect family fun event this spring. With local talent Jayne Lilford, Bodhi Hawken and the Baker Boys performing, it’s sure to be an exciting day. Organising committee member Karyn Grealy is pumping up the event to be a big one, hoping it will help out those food businesses that struggled during lockdowns in 2021. “We haven’t had a street market at night-time before, this is more for our restaurants,” she said. “We thought it would be nice to give back to eateries and food places shut down because of COVID. “Live music on our main street will be a big drawcard and especially our singers, who are locals coming back to our town and are very much loved and followed.” Kyabram Taste and Tunes will be held from 5pm to 10pm on Saturday, October 22 in Allan St, which will be blocked off for the night. CELEBRATING LEGENDARY CARS It all started with a passion for 1970s to 1980s Holden classic cars. Now known as The Legends of the Mountain, the event attracts nationwide attention to a celebration of all things motorsport in Kyabram. “We own a few classic cars,” co-founder and organiser Chris Hatch said. “We just met people who knew people along the way, including a few Melbourne clubs that included Aussie Torana Legends Inc,” he said. “It’s a charity event and we work in conjunction with the Kyabram Lions Club to share the profits within the community.

22 KYABRAM AND DISTRICT Tourist Guide 2022–2023

“It’s about bringing people to the town, which benefits economically, and sharing the history of motorsport.” The event started in 2018, but has been on hold the past two years due to COVID-19. Chris said he was excited for the event to return, but it was “hard work”. It’s destined to be one of the biggest events on the calendar, with the Saturday night being dedicated to the Holden v Ford supercar rivalry. Past drivers like Dick Johnson, John Bowe, Glen Seton, Brad Jones and Gary Rogers will grace the stage. There is plenty to look forward to, as people get to showcase and view vehicles from decades

ago, while also having close-up access to a couple of Supercar Legends. “We’ve had the original 05 Brock Commodore, Allan Grice Hatchback Torana, some original Bathurst winning cars, just a lot of super cars back in the day,” Chris said. “We try to concentrate on the Holden v Ford rivalry from back in the 70s and 80s as it seems to be the biggest point of interest. Hence the name Legends of the Mountain (Bathurst).” The event is planned for late February 2023, with dates to be confirmed.

FOR THE LOVE OF WHITE TRUCKS 26 KYABRAM AND DISTRICT Tourist Guide 2022–2023

For truck enthusiasts locally and internationally, the White Truck Muster will get your wheels spinning in excitement on March 18 and 19 2023. The event is a chance to look decades back at a truck make that ceased production in the 1980s. “White trucks aren’t made any more, but they were a good solid truck,” muster founder Ray Grima said. Ray started the event in 2005 after attending a White Track Bash in the United States, which inspired him to run his own White Truck Muster in Kyabram. “I thought if the Americans can do it, why can’t I bring it to Australia? And that’s what I did,” he said. “It’s been a great success. I’ve had international business fly in from America, Germany and New Zealand. “To get people flying in from around the world to a truck show here in country Kyabram is pretty damn good, I think.”

The event happens every two years, falling on ‘odd number’ years. In 2023, it will be in its ninth year. The event could not happen last year due to COVID-19, but Ray said he was keen to see everyone again, like a “family reunion” . “It’s not just a truck show; a lot of these people that come to the show all know each other from helping each other find [vehicle] parts,” he said. “Catching people that we haven’t seen for ages and it’s a good time to catch up with family and friends, and make new friends.” Ray said the muster brought economic benefits to Kyabram and surrounding areas. “A lot of service stations, like trucks running on diesel and people driving into town, people needing accommodation from hotels and motels, as well as restaurants and cafes benefiting,” he said. HOT WHEELS AND hot ink on show

28 KYABRAM AND DISTRICT Tourist Guide 2022–2023

Scope out some hot wheels and even admire people’s ink at the Kyabram Car, Bike and Tattoo Show in November. Get ready to be surrounded by old and new motor vehicles and perhaps throw your hat into the ring in the tattoo competition. The event is organised by members of the Kyabram Cross Piston Saloon. “It’s a static display of cars, motorbikes trucks — there is anything and everything,” member Andrew Phillips said. “People will enter their tattoos into what category they want to be in and someone will judge

that category and then a trophy is handed out.” Andrew has it all — a bike, car and tattoos — and has been helping organise the show for about 10 years. He likes running the event to support the community. “We put it on for the community, they enjoy and have a good time,” he said. “There is money donated to the Kyabram hospital or Kyabram ambulance or there’s money to be donated to a charity afterwards.”

MURAL ATTRACTS plenty of interest 30 KYABRAM AND DISTRICT Tourist Guide 2022–2023

A brolga is one of the many birds featured on the Kyabram water tank mural.

The mural on the Kyabram water tank is creating plenty of interest among both locals and visitors to the town. Representing the area’s wildlife, the mural has become a tourism drawcard for Kyabram as well as a way to reinvigorate the town. More than 1000 people signed the visitor’s book for the mural in the past 12 months, but those

responsible for it believe the visitor numbers are actually much higher. Melbourne artist Jimmy Dvate painted the 608 square metre structure, after the community spent five years raising $100,000 for the project. The mural features wildlife from the area, with some of the birds taken from photos shot at the Kyabram Fauna Park. >> KYABRAM AND DISTRICT Tourist Guide 2022–2023 31

The Kyabram water tank mural features local birds and wildlife. >> A Major Mitchell cockatoo is prominently featured on the tank, while two endangered birds — the bush-stone curlew and the plainswanderer — are also featured. A golden whistler, spotted-tail quoll, blue skimmer (dragonfly), yellow crimson rosella, redcapped robin, brolga and eastern long-necked turtle are also in the painting, among water scenes and trees. The best spot to view the water tank mural from is the mural picnic area at what was once the old Kyabram Railway Station platform It can be found on the corner of Union and Drum Sts. The mural picnic area also has tables and chairs, making it a perfect spot to enjoy lunch or a snack while admiring the artwork. The fence at the platform also shows off an array of metal cut-outs of animals, birds and flora including a dingo, wombat, pelican and flowers. Plans are also under way to put a metal cut-out of the first steam train to use the line on top of the entry to the viewing platform. Ky Project Committee president Allan Weeks said the mural had attracted plenty of 32 KYABRAM AND DISTRICT Tourist Guide 2022–2023

visitors from all over Australia as well as some from overseas. The water tank mural is included on the local silo art trail, adding yet another spot for visitors to the area to look at. For those interested in murals, the drive to Rochester and Colbinabbin to view the silo art in those towns is also well worth it. Rochester has three painted silos, also painted by Jimmy Dvate. The squirrel glider, platypus and azure kingfisher overlooking a Campaspe River scene attract plenty of attention from visitors to the town, as they overlook the railway tracks and the main street. Colbinabbin has also well and truly stamped its name on the silo art trail with its six painted silos just off the main street. Painted by Tim Bowtell, the silos show off scenes pertinent to the history of the town. They range from the Colbinabbbin Farmers Picnic, which was a favourite event in the town in the late 1800s and early 1900s, to a train transporting grain and fertiliser from the Colbinabbin silos, the old train station, ‘Lulu’ the fire truck and the Colbinabbin tractor pull.

The fence at the observation platform in front of the Kyabram water tank mural also features steel cut-outs of animals.

The Colbinabbin silos show different parts of life in Colbinabbin over the years.

Two of the Rochester silos, which have drawn considerable interest from tourists.

DISCOVER DIVERSE ART AT TOWN HALL A diverse world of art awaits you at the Kyabram Town Hall and you may be surprised by what you find inside. The historic building is home to four separate exhibition spaces, with fresh content regularly making its way onto the walls and on display. Two are free — the Splinters Contemporary Artists and Community galleries — while the Isobel Harvie and Classic galleries may require an entry fee. Visitors can expect a varied collection of artists using different mediums, many with a special interest in textiles. “We generally have four exhibitions running concurrently and they all run for about two or three months,” chair Vicki Neele said. “It’s always worth having a look and the building itself is special.” 34 KYABRAM AND DISTRICT Tourist Guide 2022–2023

The Community gallery features artists from the local region — from Echuca to Euroa and Bendigo to Shepparton, as well as Kyabram. The other galleries often feature Melbourne artists and other travelling exhibitions. Some of the more historical exhibitions are a step back in time, using photographs, paintings or dioramas. Behind the scenes, volunteers work to highlight the history of the region, providing context to works and adding to the experience for visitors. A permanent exhibit was recently installed — a large ceramic mosaic depicting the Kyabram Reform Movement — a story Vicki said had been “somewhat forgotten”. MARKET WILL LIGHT UP THE TOWN If you’re looking for your next treasure, the Kyabram Bush Market is a must — with an assortment of things to buy, eat and listen to, it’s not one to be missed. The spring market will take place around the end of October or early November, with the date still to be confirmed. But with COVID-19 reducing the market to a footpath sale for the past two years, this year’s market is shaping up to be a big one. Church and Albion Sts will be closed off for the day, packed with stalls weighed down with local produce, food, craft, bric-a-brac and much more. Meanwhile, entertainment will fill the streets of Kyabram with the sounds of music. If you’re interested in booking a stall or looking for more information, phone Deeane Stagg at Wickedly Devine on 5853 1919 or Greg Walsh at Kyabram Autopro on 5852 3463. 36 KYABRAM AND DISTRICT Tourist Guide 2022–2023

FINAL COUNTDOWN

Nicholls voters have just days to voters on the Nicholls electoral role, these trends suggest well over a third of residents will have already made up their mind and cast their vote before election day. When May 21 does come around though, Kyabramites and their close neighbours will be spoiled for choice when attempting to elect their preferred candidate to federal parliament. Youth Club Hall, Kyabram P12 College, Ky Valley Public Hall, Lancaster Primary School, Merrigum Primary School, Girgarre Primary School, Tongala Public Hall, Stanhope Community Hall, Byrneside Public Hall and Undera Primary

School will all host polling booths, with voting open from 8am to 6pm on election day. And all indications currently point to a tight race when it comes to the candidate set to represent the region for the upcoming term in office. Nationals candidate Sam Birrell, Liberal Steve Brooks and independent Rob Priestly have provided voters with a strong three-pronged battle, as they vie to replace the retiring Damian Drum. Preferences look likely to play an important part in the final result, meaning supporters of the other eight candidates for

Ms Munro said she believed this figure was in doubt. She also said lifeguards this year were instructed not to let more swimmers in if it took them over the lifeguard-to-patron ratio, which would have meant they required more staff to work.

Nicholls will still have a say in the region’s future representation. Labor’s Bill Lodwick, Ian Christoe of The Greens, United Australia Party’s Rob Peterson, One Nation’s Rikkie-Lee Tyrrell, Australian Citizens’ Party’s Jeff Davy, Fusion Party’s Andrea Otto, Liberal Democrats’ Tim Laird and Australian Federation Party’s Eleonor Tabone make up the rest of the 11 names constituents will see on their voting cards. “It’s not due to insufficient rates as to why the council can’t fund the pools, they just don’t deem it to be socially important,” Ms Munro said. Ms Munro said the council funded things such as the Discovery Centre, council-operated paddle-steamers and other commercial businesses. “Yes, it does cost money to keep the pools running, but what’s important is it’s teaching kids skills for life,” she said. “What is the cost of potentially saving someone from drowning?” Colbinabbin, Lockington, Stanhope and Tongala were originally earmarked for closure before Kyabram, Rochester and Rushworth were added to that list. Ms Munro says the Echuca pool won’t be able to deal with the added demand, being the only aquatic centre in the area. “The Echuca pool wasn’t built for

the current purpose it serves now,” she said. “If you’re going to shut seven to pools, then you are going to have spend millions of dollars to upgrade that pool because it won’t handle

the demand.” Ms Munro said parents also benefited from the community pools. “I was a single mum with four kids and to be able to go to the pools was massive for me in being able to socialise in the community,” she said. “It becomes a bit of a social network for the parents and the older community.” Councillors including John Zobec, Daniel Mackrell and Leanne Pentreath were in attendance to listen to protesters’ concerns. ▯ To sign the petition to save the pools, visit https://www.change. org/p/keep-the-shire-ofcampaspe-pools-open

SPORT AND RECREATION

FOOTBALL CLUB IS

flying high

As one of the most successful Australian rules football teams in the country in recent times, a trip to Kyabram would not be complete without a Kyabram Bombers match day experience. Established in 1894, the Bombers compete in the Goulburn Valley League and have been almost unbeatable in recent years. 58 KYABRAM AND DISTRICT Tourist Guide 2022–2023

Losing just one game between 2016 and 2019, the juggernaut took out the 2016, 2017 and 2019 premierships. Boasting former Richmond Tigers star Kayne Pettifer and goal scoring machine Kyle Mueller, the club brought back ex-Melbourne listed player, Paul Newman, as coach for season 2022.

SPORT AND RECREATION Newman has played a key role in the club’s recent success, with a next to impeccable coaching record at the helm of the side. The Bombers look a bit different this year, with a number of changes in the squad making for a refreshed and exciting side hitting the field. However with Newman back in the coach’s seat, a tight-knit community behind them and some star power on the field, Kyabram will be no less formidable. With regular season games scheduled in April, May, June, July and August there are plenty of opportunities to catch the club in action, and you could be watching a future star of the game. Former Melbourne captain Garry Lyon is one of a host of VFL/AFL talent to come out of Kyabram, with Brett Deledio, Dick Clay and Ross Dillon all among the Bombers graduates. So if you are visiting Kyabram, ask a local if it’s football season, because a trip to the beating heart of the community, aka the football club, is sure to provide an exciting afternoon of entertainment.

Kyabram Cemetery The Kyabram Cemetery, 4 kms east of Kyabram on the Kyabram Lancaster Road, was established in 1907. Burials are offered in the following sections: • Lawn Sections • Monumental Graves - Monumental • Crypts and Mausoleums - Plaques • Niche Wall for Ashes - Infant Lawn

JUST DOWN THE ROAD:

Girgarre

Girgarre is the place to be Girgarre was fortunate to be one of six communities awarded a Regional Arts Victoria project grant to engage in the small towns transformation initiative, an ambitious adventure that puts artistic practice at the centre of community life. Coined ‘The Girgarre Revival’, this project lifted the town’s spirit and created a lasting identity for the community and its residents. People from across the district and state explored common ground and connection to place through sound, while also developing new skills and fostering talents in sound expression. 66 KYABRAM AND DISTRICT Tourist Guide 2022–2023

Victoria’s most inclusive music festival From three local musos performing on a bale of hay at Girgarre’s earliest farmers’ market for 12 people, the now iconic Girgarre Moosic Muster attracts more than 1500 music lovers and skilled players from city and country, stamping it as a major fixture on Victoria’s acoustic festival circuit. For more than a decade, this unique muster has encouraged and taught thousands of beginners how to play music and provided a platform and exposure for many established and emerging musicians, songwriters and bands. The festival, held every January, has promoted the personal joys of making your own music, whether your bent is country, folk, blues, traditional Aussie bush songs, bluegrass, Celtic, pop, gospel or more contemporary styles. From the muster has sprung monthly jamming and teaching sessions coined Jigarre Jammin’, which attract up to 70 musicians every month to the township. The burgeoning Girgarre music scene has also given birth to several new bands who now ‘give back’ by performing within their own communities in northern and central Victoria. Through it all, the muster has kept its true heart, its community base. It’s still the most friendly and affordable acoustic music event in Victoria. >> KYABRAM AND DISTRICT Tourist Guide 2022–2023 67

>> Jigarre Jammin’ is a musical phenomenon Jigarre Jammin’ started when a small bunch of players found the annual Moosic Muster was not enough — they needed music sessions to keep them going month to month. Now up to 70 musically-minded folk meet in Girgarre every month for up to five hours of playing, singing and sharing knowledge, with musos from all over Victoria making the pilgrimage to join in the grooves. Gagarro Botanic Garden Gargarro Botanic Garden is the jewel in the crown of the Campaspe region. The planned project is to create a bold, beautiful and best practice garden, celebrating Indigenous history in a parkland that stimulates the senses. Gargarro will be an exemplar regional botanic garden. Its design reflects the dry landscapes of the Campaspe region, presents an interplay between geometric water features and indigenous flora, and houses all these elements in a native garden setting. The site also features a large soundshell amphitheatre for the staging of musical and creative events. 68 KYABRAM AND DISTRICT Tourist Guide 2022–2023

Girgarre Farmers’ Produce and Craft Market Held on the second Sunday of each month in the Progress Park Reserve, this market is a great family friendly day out. Relax and listen to live music while you enjoy an egg and bacon roll, free tea or coffee or sample from the many and varied food stalls. Girgarre’s famous fresh orange juice, pressed onsite, is a must-try.

JUST DOWN THE ROAD:

Stanhope

Come check out what Stanhope has to offer. The town’s main attraction is Fonterra, the big cheese factory that has a mural made up of 11,000 photos. But there is also an interesting shop called Shaque-A-Taque and Steven the cockatoo who sits on the rubbish bin outside the cafe. The Men’s Shed is also open on Wednesdays.

Town history mural On the Stanhope Business Centre Building, retelling the timeline and iconic moments from the town’s past.

Rail Trail development A rail trail from neighbouring town Girgarre to Stanhope is currently being developed. This will form a future art projects for the region — so watch this space!

Fonterra Legendairy Mural

Community Art Space

At the Fonterra Cheese Factory on the Midland Hwy, this impressive mural is made up of 11,000 individual photos from the community.

Located in Station Park, there’s always an interesting exhibition to view.

Sir John McEwen Statue Located at McEwen Place, this commemorates former Australian Prime Minster, Sir John McEwen. Sir John was a Stanhope farmer before entering federal politics and serving briefly as PM in 1967– 68, after Prime Minister Harold Holt died in office.

Stanhope Monster Garage Sale Market and Car Boot Sale Snag a bargain or say goodbye to some well-loved household items at this monster sale held on the second Sunday of the month. “We are adding to the variety of stalls with the car boot sale where people can sell from their car boot and minimise handling of the goods and books, etc involved,” Stanhope and District Development Committee member Christine Dicketts said. The committee launched the Monster Garage Sale more than 10 years ago and the proximity to the highway has seen a diverse range of people drop in. “We started it years ago to promote Stanhope, and I think we have. We do get quite a crowd come through each month,” Christine said. Any excess funds generated from the market go straight to the emergency fund set up to

support members of the community who have undergone trauma and need help. The emergency fund has been running for as long as the market, and according to Christine has helped quite a few families in that time. The market runs every month, rain or shine, with shop verandahs providing cover and shade, and gazebos on hand if the weather turns. There is live music each month, which creates a lovely ambience while you wander around and look at the variety of stalls. There is a barbecue and a local cafe with takeaway food, roast meals and coffee. The supermarket is open too, as is a great favourite, the op shop. Shaque-A-Taque has unique handcrafted woodwork and Australiana decor, which features some good old Aussie humour and locally handmade gifts and novelties.

Many Makers Gallery An expertly curated gallery and gift shop featuring local and renowned artists is the perfect place to view and purchase work by Australian creatives. Established by mosaic artist Deb Dodd, the majority of art on the walls is from around regional Victoria. “Some are from the Campaspe Shire and others are from around the Benalla, Euroa and Shepparton areas,” Deb said. She said her primary goal for Many Makers was to bridge the gap between artist and buyer.

“I really want to create a vibrant arts space, almost like a destination for people to come and buy Australian-made arts and crafts. “I think a lot of people say they would buy Australian-made art but don’t know where to get it from. It’s sometimes pretty hard to deal with individual makers. “Also, a lot of makers don’t want to sell at markets, so this is another avenue for them.” Many Makers Gallery can be found at 27 Birdwood Ave, Stanhope and is open Thursday and Friday from 10 am to 3 pm, and Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to 1 pm. JUST DOWN THE ROAD:

Rushworth Step back in time

There is something spectacular about Rushworth’s main street. It is so wide and so elegant with historic buildings on either side and a huge median strip. It must be one of the most impressive main streets in rural Victoria. Rushworth retains its original charm and is surrounded by interesting smaller goldrush towns. Grab a coffee from Gus & Ollies cafe and take a walk along the street, carefully reading the ‘Walk Through Time’ Community Project plaques on many of the buildings.

Rushworth Easter Heritage Festival This is a huge day in Rushworth. The whole town comes alive with music, entertainment, stalls, food and a grand parade. As one of the few National Trust-recognised towns in Victoria, the vintage steam tractors in the street parade and the Moora draught horses that visit the festival on Sunday blend right in with the scenery. 72 KYABRAM AND DISTRICT Tourist Guide 2022–2023

Accompanied by about 100 market stalls selling everything from crafts to fresh fruit and vegetables, you could be convinced you had stepped back in time.

Rushworth Community Market This is a much smaller version of the heritage market, but no less fantastic, and is held on the third Saturday of each month in High St, Rushworth. It’s a family friendly market with plants, fresh produce, crafts and giftware, food and wine, olive oil, treasures and much more.

Rushworth Speedway The Goulburn Valley Auto Club welcomes race fans to the Rushworth Speedway Complex on Nine Mile Rd.

Whroo Forest and Balaclava Mines In the heart of the hilly Rushworth State Forest, take a step back in the past by walking in the surrounding Whroo’s former gold mining township. There is little evidence of what was once a vibrant mining town as native fauna and flora have taken over this significant historical landmark. This historical site is marked by many tracks, and it is possible to have a well-deserved bite at its picnic area after a long walk in the Ironbark forest.

JUST DOWN THE ROAD:

Tongala

Small town with a big art You can’t walk a few metres in Tongala without tripping over a mural. Visitors can make Tongala the base for their stay, following a trail map through the town before expanding their activities to take in water tank and silo art in nearby towns. You can also visit the outdoor art gallery showcasing seven murals relating to the Goulburn River at the Tongala Town Square painted by Tongala Street Artists’ Murray Ross, Jill Conway and Teena Savage. These depict horse riding in the High Country, Eildon Dam, trout fishing in one of the Goulburn’s tributaries, yabbying in the lower reaches of the river, camping and canoeing at Yambuna and a farmer irrigating. “We hope it becomes a bit of a town square where people can gather and enjoy some art while learning a bit about the Goulburn River,” Murray said. 74 KYABRAM AND DISTRICT Tourist Guide 2022–2023

“It’s all about making a sustainable future for Tongala and the surrounding region. “We need to get visitors and tourists here. Keeping the shops open is the biggest problem in our town.” The murals translate local folklore and stories into art, immortalising them for the next generations. “Some of (the murals) tell the culture of the town and the district,“ Murray said. “There’s one that tells the funny side of things, how a local smarty came up from Melbourne to the local shearing shed. “He said ‘I’m the best of everything, I can shear quicker than all you guys’, and the local blokes said ‘oh yeah, probably; tell you what, I’ll bet you 10 bucks’, so he bet him 10 bucks — but the local bloke let him win! “He said ‘here’s your 10 bucks you won’, so now he says, ‘tell you what, double or nothing. I bet you can’t shear a sheep blindfolded’, and the bloke said, ‘oh yeah, all right, I’ll take that on’.

“So (the local bloke) went into the shed and got the biggest ram he could find, took off his scarf, blindfolded the sheep and shorn him no worries.” Another amusing Tongala tale from years ago that’s told in the murals is the case of the absentee train carriage. “On the train line, the school children used to go by diesel motor from here to Echuca for school,” Murray said. “The boys used to sit in the front carriage and the girls in the back carriage. So out at Koyuga one time while they were stopped picking up people, the boys pulled out the pin and left the girls behind.” Tongala’s outdoor gallery of murals was named as a finalist in the 2021 Australian Street Art Awards for ‘Best Street Art Trail’, for its more than 50 outstanding murals painted by the community. The town has been transformed by the local Lions Club into a street art gallery that highlights the history, culture and industries of the town. >> KYABRAM AND DISTRICT Tourist Guide 2022–2023 75

>> “Quite a number of really fantastic little stories about the history of Tongala, what’s happened in the past and specific events and so forth,” awards director Liz Rivers said. Local volunteer artists invested hundreds of hours over the past two years to produce the street art trail, with many of the works accompanied by interpretive stories. “Tongala specifically set up their their murals as a visitor attraction,” Liz said. “And the community itself created the art, so you couldn’t get a bigger, better community engagement than that.”

76 KYABRAM AND DISTRICT Tourist Guide 2022–2023

Fifty murals might not sound like a lot, but for a small town such as Tongala, it’s a huge achievement. There are probably more murals in Tongala than there are public buildings. “The awards inform travellers about the magnificent array of publicly accessible art that can be found in every corner of the country and the communities that have invested in these attractions because they’re keen to welcome visitors,” Liz said. “You can walk around Tongala in not a terribly long time, so to fit 50 murals in they’ve done an incredible job.”
