THREE OF ECHUCA-MOAMA’S BIGGEST CELEBRATIONS WILL FORM PART OF AN “EXTENDED SUMMER” AS THE REGION CONTINUES TO PROVIDE A PLETHORA OF OPTIONS FOR THE NATION’S SPORTS AND ENTERTAINMENT ENTHUSIASTS. As the sun goes down on another summer there is a line-up of traditionally A-list events scheduled for the coming months, coinciding with a series of public holidays. February 28 may signal an end to summer, but March 1 marks the start of a three-month calendar of events that engulfs everything the region has to offer – sport, music, food, wine, water sports, culture and the arts. Long weekends are as much a part of the Murray River region as sand bars and deck chairs, which is why the autumn calendar of events provides a prolonged summer-time feel from March until May.
Contents 8 THINGS TO SEE AND DO Events and attractions to interest everyone. 72 EVENTS CALENDAR Echuca-Moama events for the coming months. 76 JUST DOWN THE ROAD See what some of EchucaMoama’s surrounding areas have to offer. 100 TASTE GUIDE Hungry? Look no further! 104 ACCOMMODATION GUIDE
This year, May provides a pre-winter fill-up thanks to the staging of the Southern 80 Ski Race from May 13-15.
Need a place to stay?
Ski Racing Australia has slotted the event into a void in its national events calendar and, while the mercury won’t be at the levels it normally is, the action on the river will be just as hot.
EDITORIAL, EVENTS AND ADVERTISING INQUIRIES:
Autumn 2022 kicks off with Echuca Racing Club’s major meet of the year, its cup meeting on Sunday, March 13. With the Labour Day holiday on the Monday, courtesy buses operating to and from the course on a regular basis and a range of hospitality options on-site, it is a major attraction to the region. Then there is Easter, when tent cities rise from the dusty remnants of summer on the river banks and three public holidays engulf the April 16-17 weekend.

Saddle up, the Echuca Cup’s on the way CROWDS ARE ALL SET TO RETURN FOR THE ECHUCA CUP AND IT’S SET TO BE A RIPPER THIS YEAR AT ECHUCA RACECOURSE ON MARCH 13. “It’s our biggest race day of the year, it’s a day for us that has certainly grown over the last five years,” Echuca Racing Club general manager Garry Armstrong said. Gates open at 11 am for a big day of racing with a prize pool of $100,000. “It all becomes a fantastic day out at the races for those who are into the country cups,” Mr Armstrong said. Enjoy all country racing has to offer at one of Victoria’s premier race tracks located in the heartland of Victoria’s thoroughbred country in an intimate setting, with sweeping views of the course. “We work hard to maintain what we call a country causal sort of day. We have lots of people out on the spacious lawn areas, lots of umbrellas,” Mr Armstrong said. “A bit of live music between the races, a bit going on for the kids. We try and make it a fun day for families, (and) a good racing day for the keen race-goers.” Parking is free, and there is also a free shuttle bus service running from Echuca-Moama to the races and back. The Echuca Cup looks forward to welcoming all to Echuca.

THINK YOU CAN BE THE NEXT JACKSON POLLOCK? OR THE NEXT MICHELANGELO? OR DO YOU JUST ENJOY A FUN NIGHT WITH YOUR FRIENDS? The Port Folio Echuca is hosting Paint and Sip classes Friday and Saturday nights for those who want to try their hand at painting. “(It’s) a fun evening event, that allows people to get out and do something different where they bring their food and wine, paint something and have a bit of a giggle,” Port Folio owner Ali Farrell said. “A lot of people turn up thinking they can’t paint, and by the end of the night have created something to be really proud of. “It’s something that is more unique and a little bit more intimate,” Ms Farrell said. Classes cost $65 per person, which includes paint, brushes, the canvas and easel. “What we paint is quite random, one day it could be flamingos, another day it could be an abstract painting.” Adult classes are held on Wednesday nights for those who want to take their passion further and more seriously. Paint and Sip classes are held from 7.30–10 pm, Friday and Saturday nights. The Port Folio Echuca is located at 603 High St, Echuca and bookings can be made via The Port Folio website: www.theportfolioechuca.com What’s On

MORE THAN 200 ENTHUSIASTS AND THEIR CARS FROM ALL CORNERS OF AUSTRALIA WILL DESCEND ON ECHUCA-MOAMA FOR THE BIENNIAL RICH RIVER ROD RUN. Running as a weekend event since 1992, the Rod Run is back this year from March 18 to 20 on the Murray River. With strong support from hot rodders and the local community, it’s one of the longest running events of its type in Victoria. “We’re open to all vehicles pre-1978 and it’s run by a group of local blokes,” Rich River Rod and Custom Club president Daniel Arnold said. “It’s a relaxing weekend to get away and enjoy each other’s company.” A rod run is a weekend event for modified or customised vehicles pre-1978, but the Rich River version also welcomes restored vehicles and muscle cars. The first two days are for entrants only, including a barbecue and live music on Friday night. On Saturday, there will be an observation run for entrants and at night they’ll cruise the main streets of Echuca — a COVID-safe alternative to the traditional sit-down dinner. On Sunday, everyone is welcome to the Show and Shine family day at Jack Eddy Oval, Moama. This is the public’s chance to get up close to an array of hot rods and custom cars of all shapes, colours and sizes. It’s sure to be a great day out for the whole family with food stalls, a live band and kids’ activities. The event will start at 9 am and award presentations will be at 1 pm. “Come along for a good weekend,” Mr Arnold said. Tickets are $10 per person and are available on the day. EVER WONDERED WHAT ONE OF AUSTRALIA’S LARGEST BEER COLLECTIONS LOOKS LIKE? OR WHAT MORE THAN 4000 CERAMIC BEER STEINS LOOKS LIKE?
Neil Thomas, owner and founder of the Great Aussie Beer Shed and Heritage Farm Museum, has been collecting beer for more than 46 years, with his collection now having more than 20,000 different beer cans. “I had one of the biggest beer collections in Australia and wanted to showcase it, so that’s how this whole thing started,” Mr Thomas said. “We’ve since built a barn museum, a blacksmith workshop, sheering shed, milking shed, old kitchen, just like it was in the old days. “We also have a car museum that is supported by the National Holden Motor Museum, who lend us different cars through the year, so you can come back another time and there will be different cars to see.” Mr Thomas and his employees offer tours to all visitors of the Beer Shed and Museum, sharing their passion for beer, farming and cars. “Every tour is personalised, so whether you’re in a group or there is only two of you, we will personalise the tour for you.” Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors and $5 for children. However, Mr Thomas said in 18 years he had never charged a child for his tour. “I tell the kids they can either pay $5 for the tour or they can become my little helper on the tour, and I couldn’t charge my helper for the tour.” The Great Aussie Beer Shed and Heritage Farm Museum is located at 377 Mary Ann Rd, Echuca, and is open on weekends, public holidays and school holidays or by appointment. 24

Moama opens its season against Rumbalara at Moama Recreation Reserve on Saturday, April 2. Echuca United finished in last place in 2021 but, under the returning Farran Priest as senior coach, the Eagles will come into this campaign with renewed vigour after a preseason shake-up.
Saturday, April 2. At Victoria Park, Echuca made headlines with the signing of ex-AFL swingman Sam Reid in one of the signings of the country football off-season.
Priest, back at the Eagles for the first time since 2019, brought some experienced heads along from Elmore, including James Harney, Bailey Boyack and Phill Hubbard.
The Goulburn Valley League minor premier, spearheaded by co-coaches Simon Maddox and Andrew Walker, has retained most of its list and barring another COVID-19 interrupted season of football the Murray Bombers should come in as premiership favourites.

Mr Oman hopes that the Gold Tier status of the race and the Mountain Bike Australia ranking points 36

Easter in EchucaMoama IT’S A FAMILY TRADITION FOR MANY TO TAKE A BREAK ALONG THE RIVER OVER EASTER THAT GETS PASSED DOWN THE GENERATIONS. MANY WHO CAME TO ECHUCA MOAMA WITH THEIR PARENTS NOW BRING THEIR CHILDREN. THE TOWN IS A PERFECT DESTINATION FOR A FAMILY GETAWAY. “They just love relaxing on the riverbanks, enjoying the laid-back lifestyle that we offer,” EchucaMoama Tourism chief executive officer Kathryn McKenzie said. “We are a much loved destination and I think Easter is just one of those times when people just love coming back and having that time out of their normal day to day and getting to a nature, river-based destination that people just love. “And it’s all about relaxation and getting away, being with friends and family.” What’s On

Echuca-Moama | April 15 – 18
Things to do over the Easter weekend Echuca-Moama has some amazing events and a beautiful ambience for those who want to get away for some relaxation along the Murray River over the Easter weekend. “I think people are wanting really good events to enjoy, meet with friends and family, and just experience some normality,” Ms McKenzie said. Local businesses will be hosting special events, expos and sales for you to find as you explore the town. And of course you’ll be able to get down to the river for some stand-up paddle boarding, water skiing and even some yoga on the wharf. “I think the river plays such a significant role. The outdoors, nature, it’s still warm enough to be out on the river,” Ms McKenzie said. “People just dream of getting away for that longer break, because once that finishes you really have to push right through into the Queen’s Birthday weekend.” Merool Holiday Park Moama has its annual Good Friday Twilight Market, Friday, April 15. There’s market stalls, food vans, kids’ games and live music with parking available on site, and the best part is that all funds raised by market-goers will go to the Good Friday Appeal. For the kids, the eggstra-special annual LJ Hooker Echuca-Moama Good Friday Easter egg hunt is a must do. Thousands of eggs will be scattered across the Echuca Primary School oval on April 15 for children and adults who are young at heart. The proceeds of the event go to the Royal Children’s Hospital. And for the punters, come down and watch the annual Good Friday local footy match between Moama Football Netball Club and Echuca United Football Netball Club. It’ll be a great competition for a good cause. If you’re feeling athletic, sign up to play in the Echuca Tennis Club’s Easter tournament for a 48

friendly game of tennis with like-minded enthusiasts. And if you’re down in Kyabram, keep on the lookout for its Easter Lawn Tennis Tournament too. Racing enthusiasts can head out to Echuca Harness Racing Club on April 17 for some adrenaline-pumping action as horses and chariots thunder past. And there are markets galore for visitors looking for a bargain, starting with the Rushworth Easter Heritage Festival on Saturday, April 16 from 7 am. Join this wonderful community for a morning of market stalls, family-friendly activities and a street parade featuring vintage cars and machinery, horses, and much more.
April 15 – 18 | Echuca-Moama
And the Echuca Farmers’ Market at Alton Reserve kicks off Saturday from 8 am and is always a goldmine for local produce, food, bread and wine. On Sunday morning market life continues at the Moama Market located at the Kerrabee Sound Shell in Moama. Why not beat the traffic and take in the stunning rivers views with a bike ride or walk to the market over Echuca Moama bridge? There will likely be a Walk of Witness for Christian visitors who wish to commemorate the religious significance of Good Friday and the Easter weekend. “What we’ve seen is the desire for Melbourne people to visit certain areas like Echuca Moama that are on the river. I think we’ve just got such a beautiful story to share,” Ms McKenzie said.

The festival, originally called the Wedding Expo, brings together local suppliers who organise weddings and events. Local florists, cake makers, photographers, food vendors, venue representatives and more will be in attendance, so those planning a wedding or special event can easily find the people they need for their special day. “We wanted to make it more open, more friendly and more interactive,” Weddings and Events Festival president Shirley Fisher said. “The festival is not just for those who are planning weddings, but for anyone that may need a florist, or cake maker or venue.” “So many people have had to cancel, postpone or downsize their wedding or events over the last few years, and we wanted to help them plan,” Ms Fisher said.

Fashion history in Echuca IN THE “SWINGING ’60S” YOUR CHOICES WERE SIMPLE: YOU WERE HIP OR YOU WERE HOPELESS (AND HORRIBLY OUT OF FASHION). It might have been just 30 years from the depths of Depression fashions, but it might as well have been another planet in another solar system.
the cameras could click and film developed.
On October 30, 1965, at Flemington racecourse, a British model did not just throw another shrimp on the barbie, she just about poured a gallon of petrol on its open flames.
The British bombshell did not set out to rewrite the future of fashion; she had only stepped out what many saw as “virtually naked” because her designer, Colin Rolfe, had run out of fabric before completing the dress they had planned.
Jean Shrimpton and her “scandalous” miniskirt — a staggering 10 cm above her knees — all but had women swooning in the members’ stand. Where were her gloves, her stockings, her decency? And the story rolled out across the world as fast as 58

But the first casualty in any fashion war is always the truth.
To which she told him to finish it where it fell, adding: “nobody’s going to take any notice” . The Melbourne Cup, Derby, Cox Plate and Caulfield Cup partly owe their success today to fashion in
Echuca general and that 23-year-old model in particular. By the early 1960s, crowds at the spring carnival were shrinking so fast the Victoria Racing Club came up with “fashions on the field” to attract more women to the track. They paid Ms Shrimpton £2000 to spend two weeks in Melbourne as the face of racing (the Beatles had received only £1500 for their national tour the year before) and the rest is history. That history is going to be on show at Echuca Historical Society during its new exhibition — a feast of fashion in Australia from the 1930s to 1960s. Exhibition curator Jan Hollingsworth said the society had again been digging deep into the storerooms and this time had brought out more treasures to display to the museum’s visitors. Jan said the 1930s were a time of the Great Depression and the start of World War II. At the same time, she said it was also a period to party and to try and forget about the state of the world.

Echuca “Fashion in the 1940s was subdued until 1947; when Dior hit the scene with lavish designs — much to the horror of the average person who was bound by ration coupons and lack of funds,” Jan said. “Although still wearing the nipped-in waists of the ‘30s and ‘40s, the 1950s were colourful and extravagant. “Already the emergence of the new breed of pop stars — especially Elvis — was an important influence. “By the 1960s fashions were more comfortable, as the Beatles, Rolling Stones and British invasion became the leaders of fashion. “Until that 1965 day when ‘the Shrimp’ — the world’s first supermodel — hit the world’s headlines.” Jan said men’s fashion lagged a little; but by the ’60s they were as fashion-conscious as the women. So what was Echuca wearing? Well, you will have to head along to the exhibition to find out; because the society exhibition team has been able to add many local photographs for you

Echuca to see and maybe remember the occasions. “Come and join us in a trip down memory lane,” Jan said. “As you walk through the museum you will see dresses and gowns from these periods — and those baggy pants the men favoured before paisley, purple, pink and puce became de rigueur for any young man in the 1960s. “You will get a laugh out of some of the exhibits, you might even cringe a little if you can recognise some of the things you may have worn and thought so trendy and chic — and your children and grandchildren might enjoy that moment even more. “The exhibition opens in the museum at 1 Dickson St, Echuca, on February 1 — so be there or be square.”

Ski races long-awaited return ECHUCA MOAMA’S WORLD FAMOUS SOUTHERN 80 SKI RACE IS SET TO MAKE ITS LONG-AWAITED RETURN, ALBEIT IN A DIFFERENT TIME SLOT, AS IT SHIFTS FROM FEBRUARY TO MAY WITH THE NEW DATE FOR THE EVENT NOW LOCKED IN.

May 13 – 15 | Echuca
The 51st edition of the iconic ski race will be held from May 13 to 15. The race was initially meant to be held in early February, but its postponement was forced due to emergency services staff not having enough personnel to help support the event, largely due to the Omicron coronavirus outbreak. The 2021 even was also cancelled. Ski racers from across the country will go headto-head in a wide range of different events across the weekend, competing in more than 40 different classes, including outboards, inboards, junior and veteran classes. Races will be held on the Saturday and Sunday, with competitors speeding along a 20km and 80km course before finishing at Victoria Park, Echuca. The iconic event is a huge boost for the EchucaMoama region, and its economy. It is hoped the event will draw huge crowds despite the new date. The Southern 80 will also be a huge boost for local accommodation and hospitality venues, many of which were left in the lurch after the event was delayed. More than 60,000 people were anticipated to visit the Echuca-Moama region across the February weekend, with more than 700 participants expected to compete. NSW Tourism and Sport Minister Stuart Ayres said he was glad to see the event would go ahead. “The Southern 80 is an internationally recognised waterskiing event that provides a great boost to the visitor economy of the Echuca-Moama region,” Mr Ayres said. “I commend the determination of the organisers and thank all stakeholders for their co-operation to ensure this signature regional NSW event gets back on the water in 2022.” What’s On

Sleep, explore, Echuca -Moama WHAT BETTER PLACE TO STAY THAN AT QUEST APARTMENTS ECHUCA? The apartments are refurbished, located in the centre of town and have all the amenities one could need for a convenient getaway. At least, that’s what owner Brendan Du Kamp believes. “They’re fantastically located right in the heart of the town, opposite the Murray River aquatic reserve and minutes from the port,” he said. “So you can explore all the wonderful history of Echuca and attend our fabulous restaurants, bars and pubs.” For the past two years, Mr Du Kamp said it had been mainly Victorians staying at Quest, and he was hoping people continued to holiday in their home state and visit Echuca. “Because of all the travel restrictions, people were conditioned to have their holidays a bit closer to home,” he said.
And Quest Apartments, with its recent million-dollar refurbishment and acquisition of stunning artworks, is one of the most convenient accommodation providers in the area. “Quest has the absolute convenience of all the facilities that apartments come with instead of just a motel room,” Mr Du Kamp said. “You can go to one of our fabulous farms or grocers and pick up some great produce and enjoy that experience, but it’s still well located in town close to bars and restaurants.” To book your getaway, call Quest Apartments Echuca on 03 5481 3900. Torrumbarry Fishing Classic to return in April HUNDREDS OF AVID ANGLERS WILL CHANNEL THEIR INNER REX HUNT AND WET A LINE ON THE MIGHTY MURRAY COME THE FIRST WEEKEND OF APRIL FOR THE RETURN OF THE TORRUMBARRY COMMUNITY CLUB XTREME MARINE FISHING CLASSIC. Competitors will be hoping for ‘big ones’ and ‘whoppers’ alike at the 2022 edition which takes place over April 2 and 3.
But the same events are on offer, with prizes for longest cod, longest yellowbelly and carp lotto, along with junior prizes and raffles.
After two COVID-19-impacted events, Torrumbarry Community Club’s Sam Colvin said preparing for this year’s competition had been challenging.
“No real big changes to this year. Apart from on the Saturday at the main camp we will be having woodfire pizza and a couple of food vans,” Sam said.
“Planning this year has been fairly different to the last. With that many different COVID-19 rules and regulations changing, by the time you get something set you have to change it again,” he said.
“This year people can fish from Cameron’s Creek right up to the All The Rivers Run caravan park. Each end of our competition boundaries are clearly marked with buoys and our local fishing club marshalling each end.
“The community support behind it is huge though. Planning a comp like Torrumbarry is a lot easier when you have local businesses around you offering their support.” Usual participants of the fishing classic will notice some changes to this year’s competition, most noticeably the shift of fishing boundaries and food vans.
“We have a capped limit of 500 entrants, last year going very close to our limit … as a committee we found (that COVID-19) didn’t really impact numbers at that point. Everyone was just keen to get out on the water by that stage.” For more information, go to Torrumbarry Community Club’s Facebook page. What’s On

Bendigo Direct from the Graceland archive, the exclusive exhibition will showcase highlights such as Elvis and Priscilla’s wedding outfits, the repurposed ‘68 special costume he wore to meet US President Richard Nixon, the diamond-encrusted Maltese cross necklace designed by Linda Thompson, and a dazzling array of Vegas jumpsuits. Elvis’s idiosyncratic style was as sensational as his music, and evolved over time. The exhibition also moves beyond the familiar story of his musical and acting career to present his more private side — his devotion to his parents, his love of books, motorcycles, horses and karate and the haven he created in Graceland for his friends and family. Personal treasures on show will include his gold telephone, karate gi, his first-grade crayon box from Tupelo, and the bongos Priscilla gifted him on their first Christmas together in 1959. Elvis’s influence on music, design, art, and pop culture was profound and he is remembered as a history-making public figure of the 20th century.

Murray River Council Mayor Chris Bilkey and the Bridge Art Project committee are hoping that news of a successful state government grant in the next month will allow them to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the group’s formation. The Bridge Art Project committee was formed in January 2012, and 10 years later is on the cusp of its greatest achievement: securing $5 million in funding for the development of the Meninya St gallery. An application through the NSW Tourism Activation Grant program was submitted in August, but the committee has had an expected response date pushed back twice. Land purchased by the committee in 2019, between Madison Spa and Echuca Moama Physiotherapy,
will be the site of the new Bridge Art Project gallery. It will serve as an entry point to a path, which will extend all the way to the river and provide a unique artistic experience for visitors and Echuca-Moama residents alike. Cr Bilkey, who is chairman of the project committee, said it was expecting news of the most recent grant application later this month. “They promised us an answer in early December, then delayed it again to January,” he said. “So it is a waiting game at this point.” The committee is much more upbeat about the chances of the grant being approved, having fallen at several hurdles in the application process in previous years. “We used some funds which we were able to secure through a gala dinner fundraising event held in

Echuca-Moama can expect a major spin-off from the biggest Victorian Scout event to be held in the region — the Victorian Scouting Jamboree, known as VicJam — being staged at Elmore Events Centre for the next eight days. There are 4500 Scouts camping at Elmore for the jamboree, having arrived mid-way through Wednesday and with events scheduled up until January 8. Among those events is the Echuca Explorer, where more than 80 groups will be spending an hour taking in the sights and experiences of Echuca as part of their VicJam experience. In the biggest change to the COVID-19 testing system since the beginning of the pandemic, Victorians won’t have to line up to get a PCR test and wait for their result to be diagnosed with COVID-19 — meaning shorter wait times and faster access to clinical care. Under new pandemic orders that come into effect at 11.59pm on Thursday night, January 6, people who test positive on a rapid antigen test (RAT) will be considered probable cases and be subject to the same requirements as confirmed cases from a PCR test — they must isolate immediately for seven days and notify their contacts. Echuca and Moama pharmacies are waiting on orders for rapid antigen tests to be filled as frustrated community members are forced to wait hours in line at the Rotary Park PCR testing site. It will be mandatory to report the result of a positive RAT to the Department of Health through an online form or by phone — ensuring people can access the care and information they need, including monitoring for worsening symptoms and financial support for isolation.

RAPID TESTS FOR SCHOOLS Students and teachers will undergo twice weekly rapid testing and third COVID-19 vaccine doses will be mandated for eduction staff under Victoria’s back-to-school strategy. Premier Daniel Andrews says 6.6 million RATs will be delivered to schools and early childhood centres across the state before primary and secondary students resume classes on January 31. In all, 14 million will be distributed during the state’s surveillance testing regime, which will be reviewed after four weeks. “It is about finding as many
Riverine
cases as we can and shutting down those chains of transmission,” Mr Andrews said yesterday. Parents will be contacted by schools when the tests are ready to be picked up. Once in their possession, students and staff are requested to use them twice every week at home before school or childcare. Students and staff at specialist schools are recommended to take a test every school day to protect medically vulnerable children from severe illness. The cost of supplying the tests will be split 50/50
between the Victorian and federal governments under an existing arrangement. A similar plan has been announced by NSW, after collaboration between the two states. A third immunisation dose will also become compulsory for Victorian school and early childhood staff by February 25, or within three months and two weeks of when they had their second jab. Education Minister James Merlino said 99.7 per cent of staff were double-dose vaccinated by the end of term four last year. “I have got every
confidence that staff will enthusiastically respond to the third dose vaccine mandate,” Mr Merlino said. The move was based on Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton’s advice that it would mitigate outbreaks in schools amid the Omicron wave and give the workforce greater protection. While asymptomatic education staff identified as close contacts can continue working with daily negative rapid tests, a replacement worker pool is being recruited to plug expected gaps in government schools.

Curtis goes to Town as records tumble Echuca opening batsman Curtis Townrow rewrote the record books on Saturday when he blasted 14 sixes in his unbeaten 255-run innings at Victoria Park — in doing so recording the highest individual score in Goulburn Murray Cricket Association history. The record-breaking innings came at the expense of Echuca South, who was bundled out for just 50 in reply to the giant Echuca total of 6-359. Townrow exploded out of the blocks after his team won the toss, his threehour, 45-over innings the feature of his team’s enormous total at the closure of its one-day innings. Full steam ahead for the Easter Heritage Festival ABOUT AN HOUR FROM ECHUCA, AND TWO HOURS FROM MELBOURNE, THE LITTLE TOWN OF RUSHWORTH’S HERITAGE-LISTED BUILDINGS ARE A SIGHT TO SEE. And what better time to visit than during the town’s Easter Heritage Festival? Market co‑ordinator Peter Reade said the event was a great weekend for locals and tourists alike. On average, the festival attracts about 5000 people annually. “A lot of people come up from Melbourne and surrounding areas for sure,” Mr Reade said. As one of the few National Trust-recognised towns in Victoria, the vintage steam tractors in the street parade and the Moora draught horses that visit the

Accompanied by about 100 market stalls selling everything from crafts to fresh fruit and vegetables, you could be convinced you had stepped back in time. “It’s got that character,” Mr Reade said. “The spectacle of the horses, the steam tractors and the market itself (encourages visitors) to get out and about and explore the area.” The 2022 Rushworth Easter Heritage Festival kicks off on Saturday, April 16, from 8 am. Featuring a world-class line-up, including country music stars Lee Kernaghan, Casey Barnes and Brad Cox, it’s safe to say the who’s-who of the country music scene will be in attendance. On top of the world-class line-up, rides, whip cracking demonstrations, market stalls and plenty of amazing food and drink options will be available to ensure that all festival-goers have plenty to keep them entertained. “This really is a festival of all things country,” festival director Aidan McLaren said. “We’ve tried to make it as welcoming to all, so that people of all ages can really enjoy the day. “It’s going to be a great day, with an awful amount of fun to be had,” Mr McLaren said. The festival will provide Goulburn Valley residents a chance to support the local music scene, which
has had a challenging couple of years due to the pandemic. “We hope that people will come and support the industry and have a good time,” Mr McLaren said. “We encourage people to just turn up with their camping chair and picnic rug and have a great time.” The festival will be held at the Shepparton Showgrounds on Sunday, April 10 with entertainment beginning at noon. Tickets are $99 for adults, $40 for teenagers and $10 for children under the age of 10. Buses will be available on the day to transport festival-goers to and from the showgrounds. Start your engines IT’S TIME TO START YOUR ENGINES AND DUST OFF THE GPS FOR THE ANNUAL LOCKINGTON VINTAGE TRACTOR AND MACHINERY RALLY. The rally, which is into its 24th year, will feature vintage and historic cars, trucks, tractors and stationary engines. Event organiser Beryl Marshall expects the rally to have more than 100 classic machines for visitors to see.
“We expect to have over 40 cars, and the same number of tractors too, as well as over 20 beautiful vintage stationary engines.” Ms Marshall said the event was great for younger children as it could teach them about how machines used to work before computers and phones. “The machines won’t just be sitting there, people will be able to see these old machines really running, especially children who may have never seen machines like these before,” Ms Marshall said. A `Sunday roast’ will be offered on Saturday and Sunday for all visitors, with the Lions Club also organising a barbecue. Tickets can be purchased at the rally, with admission costing $10 each for those aged 12 and older. Lockington’s fifth annual scarecrow competition will also be held on the same weekend. The rally will run from 9am to 4pm on April 23 and 24 at 2-10 Market St, Lockington, Victoria.
