“Most of the venues offer cocktails and a lot of the smaller wine producers offer wine tastings so it’s a good way to get their product out there and to learn about them and there’s lots of beautiful food available too,” Jacqui said.

Each venue will also showcase two local bands, keeping the day lively and upbeat as people meander between places.

“There’s a heap of beautiful wineries on that side that people don’t often know about and the buses make it easier to get around to all the different Participantsvenues.” will exchange their tickets for a wristband, which allows them to go between as few or as many wineries as they’d like throughout the day by bus. The buses will go in a continuous loop, so participants will have the luxury to choose their own wine adventure throughout the day, free to stay at one venue longer, return to another or make various trips throughout the day.

SINCE 1959, KEEN PADDLERS HAVE COME TOGETHER TO RACE KM OF RIVER OF FIVE DAYS.

Organiser Shannon O’Brien said boosting regional tourism was an important factor for them when planning this event.

“We heavily promote the paddlers to not bring anything into the region and we’re encouraging them to stay in the local campgrounds, hotels and motels and shop locally and eat locally,” Shannon said.

ALONG 404

The event also acts as a fundraiser, with every participant required to raise funds for a local cause, with the option of donating their time to a cause also counted.

Now organisers are changing both the name and the game of this year’s event, opting for the more competitive title of mmp415 and a new course.Inprevious years, participants usually travelled 404 km along the Murray from Yarrawonga to ThisSwan Hill.year, the course has changed slightly — diverting through Gunbower State Forest and finishing in Koondrook.

OVER THE COURSE

16 What’s On

Originally known as the Murray Marathon and held late December, it became the Massive Murray Paddle and shifted to November.

“By giving freedom for people to choose their cause, we found they raise so much more,” Shannon said.

Mirage Sea Kayaks and Sydney Harbour Kayaks are the organisers behind the event and are big investors in tourism in the region.

“This February we only had 110 paddlers but they raised $100,000. That’s crazy — it’s really substantial and fantastic to have that result.”

November 21-25 | Murray River

Since 2016, the paddle has raised a total of $895,442 and Shannon hopes the event will hit the million dollar mark this year.

A popular annual event, registration for this year’s paddle has already hit 300 people and with registrations open until the beginning of November, numbers will only get higher.

The event will run from November 21 to November 25. To register, go to www.mmp415.racing or phone (02) 9969 4590 for more information.

The event has been put on hold for the past two years due to COVID-19 restrictions, but this year it will be back with a splash on November 12.

Race chair Neil Donald said it would be good to have a fresh course for the race.

THE ANNUAL BEEHAG 100 SKI RACE RETURNS TO THE MURRAY RIVER THIS SPRING. Since 2006, the Beehag 100 Ski Race has been held in honour of the Moama Water Sports Club founder and life member, Barrie Beehag, who died in June that year.

Usually going 60 km along the Murray River from Deep Creek Marina to Torrumbarry Weir and back, the race will be slightly different this year.

Boats and skiers will instead start from Wills Bend, west of Echuca, making it a 100 km race altogether.

The event only takes 100 teams across all categories so get in fast and register your team before spots sell out. To register your team or for more information, go to: www.barriebeehag.com.au

20 What’s On

“Just to make it longer and find a spot to assemble the boats Wills Bend is a campground with toilets and good road access to drive in.”

Neil said the Beehag 100 Ski Race was a good practice event and more relaxed than its famous Southern 80 cousin.

“It was bit short so we thought we should lengthen it and more people are on the Victoria side,” he said.

“Good for Echuca to have another event and it’s good for the competitors to have a another race in our town and a warm-up to the Southern 80,” he “Asaid.lot of city people aren’t used to the tight river we have here.

| November 12

Entries open six weeks before the event which is on Saturday, November 12 from 8 am to 4 pm and close two weeks before. It is a team event and there is a range of age categories, available from kids to seniors.

“It’s also good for businesses in town with a good influx of visitors to the area as they spend “Peoplemoney. come along to watch more of a family event. It’s free and you can just sit anywhere on the side of the river to watch it’s more of a casual event.”

The 2022 show will be held on November 5 and 6, showcasing the best of our agricultural industries and attracting livestock and horses to the two days of Thecompetition.showalso boasts extensive sideshows and activities, with pony rides, mini golf, petting zoos and fireworks displays, as well as competitions such as photography and baking.

Allan said the society was looking for volunteers to man the gates, and vendors and businesses to set up stalls at the event.

The Echuca Moama Show has been held about 144 times since records began in 1876.

Echuca Moama & Districts Agricultural Show Society president Allan Mathers said they did their best to try and keep everything free after attendees paid their gate fee, but that might be challenging after the past two years of not being able to fundraise.

Allan hopes to see the show run for another 100 years to come

“A lot of people seem to think I was there for the first one — but I wasn’t!”

Echuca Moama & Districts Agricultural Show Society works with school children in the area to brainstorm ideas for sideshows and provide feedback for what they would like to see at Thethe show.students also participate by producing promotional posters for the show.

“We usually pride ourselves by keeping the gate price down — so once parents have paid their gate fees they don’t have to put their hand in their pocket for the sideshows,” Allan said.

THE GUNBOWER RACING CLUB HAS ITS SIGHTS SET FIRMLY ON THE 2022 MOAMA BOWLING CLUB GUNBOWER GOLD CUP AFTER A TWO-YEAR HIATUS, KICK-STARTING THE SPRING RACING CARNIVAL ON OCTOBER 1.

Michael said there was something for everyone at the Gunbower Cup, with fashions on the field and corporate marquees being crowd favourites.

Moama Bowling Club has been announced as this year’s major sponsor as the two local organisations collaborate for the first time.

“We’re absolutely ecstatic about the fact that we’ve got Moama Bowling Club coming on board as a major cup sponsor this year,” Michael said.

Tickets can be purchased via country.racing.com/gunbower

“There’s something for everyone at cup day,” Michael said. “The money we make goes back into the community; we give as much back to the local community organisations as much as we can.”

This year’s pavilion will be transformed into the Art Gallery Café, featuring a display of work from local artists Kevin Williams, Abby Smith and Rebecca Well, with a two-course meal available.

77What’s On

“The Moama Bowling Club is such a driver of community events, they seem to get behind every major event in the community, big and small.”

Gunbower Racing Club president Michael Farrant said the committee was looking forward to racing again and is “geared up, ready to go”.

The volunteer-run event will feature seven races with an additional one being anticipated.

Live music will feature in between races, as well as plenty of food, drinks and kids’ activities to keep everyone’s spirits high.

The starts in Gunbower

Gunbower’s annual cup meeting welcomes back punters from across the country to participate in its iconic event, which is set to be bigger and better than before.

“We’re very happy to have the show back,” Tongala Cruiser’s Club committee member John Bentley said. “We want to put on a great show for the entire community, and hopefully support some of the local clubs in the area.”

“It’s hard to know what the turnout will be this year, but we are hopeful that we can do just as well, or maybe a bit better,” he said.

There is a gold coin entry fee for visitors, and those wishing to show their car will be charged $10, and $5 for a bike.

Tongala | October 23

All the proceeds of the show will go to local Theclubs.show will be held at Shire Lawns, Henderson Rd, Tongala from midday to 6 pm.

TONGALA’S SECOND EVER BEERSHEBA ROD, CUSTOM AND CLASSIC CAR AND BIKE SHOW IS BACK AFTER A FOURYEAR HIATUS.

78 What’s On

The event will have catered food, live music and a raffle, as well as the car show, to ensure every visitor enjoys the day.

The show will bring some of the region’s best custom and classic cars to Tongala on Sunday, October 23 for a day that will not want to be missed by anyone.

Because of COVID-19, the organisers had to postpone and eventually cancel their planned 2020 show, but they have focused all their energy into making this year even better than their inaugural 2018 event.

In 2018, the show had more than 300 cars and motorbikes take part, raising more than $3500 for the community, and John hopes this year they can better it.

Originally the Echuca Country Music Festival, it has been held in Lockington since 2017 and features a variety of entertainment, from country to rock’n’roll and rockabilly.

Roz’s production company, Big River Entertainment, promotes the all-indoor festival as an awareness of rural towns project.

“On Sunday we start with a gospel hour from 10.30 to 11.30 and then continue on with a variety of music after that.”

YOU CAN EXPECT THE LOCKINGTON COUNTRY MUSIC FESTIVAL TO BE ROCKING THIS

There was no shortage of artists wanting to give the gig a go. And, thankfully, many live music lovers seem to agree that it’s an appealing way to spend a couple of hours on a Saturday afternoon especially while enjoying a drink or two with a partner or with friends. What’s it like onboard? How do musicians find it?

Blues Tram is back on tracks

88 What’s On

The idea was reinforced to me when I first rode the trams with my daughter (four years old at the time) and I got an appreciation of what an enjoyable way to enjoy our city it is, riding these beautifully restored vintage trams at a leisurely pace.

How did you go convincing people to jump onboard (literally and metaphorically)?

Bendigo BENDIGO’S TRAMS ARE NOISY BEASTS. THEY’LL RING THE BELL AS THEY GLIDE THROUGH THE CITY, THEY’LL RUMBLE WHEN THEY’RE GOING AND SQUEAL TO A HALT WHEN THEY HAVE TO STOP. HOWEVER, EVERY NOW AND AGAIN A DIFFERENT TYPE OF NOISE COMES OUT OF THEM WHEN MUSICIANS AND MUSIC FANS PILE ONTO THE TRAM AND HAVE A MOBILE CONCERT. THE BLUES TRAM IS COLIN THOMPSON’S BABY, AND HE SPOKE TO MAX STAINKAMPH ABOUT HOW IT CAME TO BE AND HOW EXCITED HE IS FOR THE TRAM TO RETURN AFTER A COVID-ENFORCED HIATUS.

Julius Porlai, who has worked with me as part of the core crew of Bendigo Blues & Roots Music Festival’s core committee since we started over a decade ago, first had the idea of staging mellow gigs on Bendigo’s Vintage Trams, for inclusion in our festival program and as an ongoing event in its own right.

How did the idea came about? What made you want to try and get musicians on a tram?

We’ve consistently had positive feedback from our passengers since we started running The Blues Tram in 2012. It’s always a joy to put a smile on people’s faces with musical experiences, but this is one that is uniquely satisfying to our crew and to the people who come along. Our artist plays in the middle of the tram and the seats all face the middle. We situate the PA

To have an artist playing their songs through a small PA on board to further embellish the experience seemed like a great fit, which it has proved to be every time we’ve done it.

Everyone’s usually very understanding and co operative we’ve not had to kick anyone off for bad behaviour … yet. For our artists, it can be a bit of a physical challenge, as the tram itself can lurch unexpectedly from time to time, depending on traffic conditions, so we encourage the performers to play seated (on a drum stool or such) and have both feet on the floor, to ensure stability and to help avoid being struck in the mouth with their microphone mid-song. Despite the challenges, all of our artists express the desire to play the tram again, so we always have a lot of interest from return artists, in addition to those reaching out seeking potentially playing with us for the first time.

It’s been a pleasant surprise to see how much of an icon The Blues Tram has become as a tourist and arts attraction, but we understand it as our crew all love it and continue to passionately pursue staging it on a volunteer basis, as we’ve done from the We’vestart.got a good-sized crew to draw on, for running the bar, running sound, emceeing and the list of tram drivers wanting to be rostered on for it has traditionally been long and competitive as well, so we’re told. How excited are you to be back?

89

Has the popularity of it surprised you?

Bendigo speakers at each end facing the middle so that, no matter where you sit, you can hear the artist’s music, without it being too loud for anyone. We strongly encourage our audience before departure to be mindful of talking during songs, as we want everyone (the artists included) to be able to enjoy the performance to its fullest potential.

After an enforced hiatus of more than two years and only being able to run ‘online gigs’ in that time for The Blues Tram, we couldn’t be more excited about returning to the rails this month. We’ll be running music on the tram monthly from here on in and (except due to unforeseen circumstances) it’ll be on the second Saturday of the month, as well as the four Blues Tram events we’ll run at the Bendigo Blues & Roots Music Festival in November. We generally take December off but have already booked a strong roster of artists through mid-2023 and hope that The Blues Tram will continue to be central Victoria’s favourite mobile music venue for many years to come.
