Cradle to Grave Asset Management Using Best Practices, Benchmarking and Standardization David Chambers, CBET, Director, Facilities Management, Los Angeles County Department of Health Services Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, and Rich Sable, CBET, Product Manager, EQ2, LLC The Los Angeles County Department of Health Services successfully completed a large-scale project to transform its biomed, facilities and supply chain operations to achieve robust efficiencies using data and an improved workflow at its six hospitals. This required integrated implementations of best practices, benchmarking, data standardization and new technologies including a new CMMS. Transforming the way that multiple departments and multiple locations perform their day-to-day work, as well as the overarching strategies for the enterprise, can seem daunting at first but through effective planning and buy-in from all involved parties, the opportunities for improvement are numerous for all. The results are lower costs, more effective systems and processes, and data to demonstrate the improvements to upper level management.

The Realities and Irrelevance of Medical Device Leakage Currents Larry Fennigkoh, Professor, Biomedical Engineering, Milwaukee School of Engineering The focus of this session will examine the technical realities and origins of 60 Hz leakage (or “touch”) currents and the necessary, multiple and highly unlikely conductive pathways that need to exist before any form of shock hazard presents itself. While the continued visual inspection of the device’s line cord, plug cap, strain relief and the assurance of ground conductor integrity remain very appropriate components of an electrical safety inspection, the focus on leakage currents need no longer be among them.

Mastering the Gap: Knowledge and know-how vs. people skills Bill Wagner, CEO, CSP and Certified EOS Implementer, Accord Management Systems Based on research, success is determined by two concepts: 1. The GAP: There is a gap, for every person, between who they are naturally and who they need to be in order to create success in their role. No person is excluded from this rule. You may at times need more patience, more drive, more dominance, more precision… 2. Cognitive Override: Acknowledging that GAP and knowing what behaviors need to be shifted can make that success possible. The goal of your role can change rapidly, as teams change, objectives get added to your plate, new employees get onboarded and as you may shift laterally into a new position. This is a fun, thought-provoking and, at times, sarcastic presentation. We delve into the element of your business that is the most difficult to understand ... the people side. Most people have a pretty good handle on the financial and technological aspects of their businesses. The real challenge is getting the people side right. When a company employs the right people, with the right culture, the right skills, in the right position, the GAP takes no energy to manage – everything just falls into place.

geographic location and thin budgets. The shared use of expertise and resources for consultation, research and education can support these sites to achieve the HTM vision in critical areas such as compliance with regulations, technology assessment, replacement and acquisition planning, patient safety, cybersecurity and professional consultation. The University of Vermont program of shared HTM services will be presented as an example of a methodology to achieve the HTM vision.

Interdepartment Information Visibility and Life Cycle Management Decisions Jon Kocurek, Clinical Engineering Director; Michael Brilling, Clinical Engineer Dartmouth-Hitchcock Health; and Vishal Malhotra, Chief Technology Officer, EQ2 LLC The HTM team at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center has uncovered new ways to improve efficiencies and communication while reducing costs through complete data and information visibility. Using advanced reporting and dashboards with data optimized at the individual hospital department level within the CMMS, numerous synergies are realized. Communication between departments is enhanced and support of HTM both for, and from, those departments becomes the norm rather than the exception. Data integrity and value toward life cycle management decisions is achieved through providing visibility to all sides. This empowers clinicians and department managers to help reduce total cost of ownership by reducing the cost of service ratio (COSR). With complete visibility into individual assets within each individual department, clinicians, department managers and HTM are all on the same page and pursuing the same goals for each asset’s management.

Tobey Clark, Engineering Supervisor/ Director, WHO Collaborating Center for HTM, University of Vermont Small hospitals have exceptional challenges in planning and managing healthcare technology. Limitations include lack of leverage and expertise,

Avoiding Big Failures Without Big Expenses with 4 Easy Steps Ted Lucidi, Customer Experience and Clinical Insights, Innovatus Imaging When it comes to imaging devices, little things go a long way. And not always in the right direction. A little slip of the hand could cause trauma to a TEE probe and, according to years of data from first-hand experience and researching common failures, trauma is one of the leading reasons for costly repair services. In this session, attendees will learn to identify the little changes to the daily routines of cross-functional teams that can have a big impact on lowering costs associated with downtime and repairs. They will learn to identify opportunities for improvement, establish goals, metrics, checkpoints and work with end-users to take routine processes to a new level.
