Effect of Equipment Age on Reliability
Binseng Wang, VP of Program Management, and Torgeir Rui, Lead Data Analyst, Program Management, Sodexo Healthcare Technology Management
It has been assumed for a long time that equipment will deteriorate with age, i.e., its reliability will decrease with time, based on experience acquired in other industries. A careful analysis of medical equipment failure rate as a function of age shows that this hypothesis is not always true for most equipment types. Certain equipment types do show the classical wear-out pattern, but many others do not. On the other hand, a few types and brands of equipment exhibit high failure rates after only a few years of use. The results of this analysis can help to determine whether maintenance strategies should be revised for older equipment and which types and brands of equipment should be carefully evaluated prior to equipment planning and selection in order to minimize risks of patient care and high maintenance costs.

Imaging Service – Keys to Developing and Sustaining Your Imaging Service Program
Ryan Harris, Director of HTM, Texoma Medical Center (UHS of Delaware)
Developing an imaging service program within a hospital brings many advantages including financial savings and increased equipment uptime, but it can also be an intimidating and difficult endeavor. If done without the proper forethought and research, there can be negative financial results or regulatory fallout. In this presentation, I will discuss the actions we took at my hospital to build up our imaging service program and some potential issues we identified along the way. This will be a collaborative presentation with room for examples and ideas from the audience.
Adding to the Toolbox – Tips to Grow Into a Better Leader
A Declassified Job Market Revival Guide: HTM Job Search
Ian Contreras, Biomedical Engineer, VA North Texas Healthcare System
The advent of COVID-19 has changed the world in many ways. The job market – specifically the HTM market – is no exception. The Great Resignation saw many workers reevaluating life priorities, disparities in the work-life balance and a mind-shift change leaving many new openings unfilled. And yet, many people find it difficult to navigate the market to meet these new work expectations and find the right job for themselves, especially entry-level workers. This presentation will provide a better understanding of the market and how to best set oneself up for a job one loves to feel fulfilled.

29 Lessons Learned in 29 Years in the HTM Industry
Bryant Hawkins Sr., Site Manager, Children's Hospital New Orleans
This presentation is full of lessons I have gathered in my 29 years in the HTM industry as a technician, lead technician, manager and director.
Greg
Czajka,
CHTM, Support Services Operations Director, Advocate Aurora Health
Great leadership doesn’t occur overnight – it takes years to cultivate and we each pick up bits and pieces along the way. Some of these ideas are learned from a mentor, a formal class, through osmosis while on the job, or even through the failure of others (what not to do)! An analogy I heard years ago from a mentor of mine is that every new tactic is a tool you add to your toolbox. Your toolbox is as big as you want it to be and you should continually add to it to continue your development. The goal of this course is to share some of the tools I picked up along my journey, so you don’t have to learn them the hard way.

The Return on Investment for Clinical Engineers
Carol Davis-Smith, President, Carol Davis-Smith & Associates LLC and Kurt Finke, Coach, Finke Clinical Engineering LLC
When all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail. Why is it that some health systems have expanded their “toolbox” to include staff with engineering degrees (aka, clinical engineers) and others have not? What complementary skills and value do these “non-hammer tools” bring to healthcare technology management? This presentation will explore these questions and identify ways to determine what roles clinical engineers can (should) play within an HTM program.

Survey Preparation Best Practices
Rich Sable, CBET, Product Manager, EQ2 LLC
Hospitals are surveyed by so many different organizations such as Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services, Joint Commission and DNV that the HTM team needs to perform several actions to be prepared for each survey. Proper categorization will give managers the ability to quickly identify high-risk devices, manage devices on an AEM program, identify utility equipment and identify devices removed from the maintenance program. These details – as well as location and schedule – need to be comprehensibly addressed day to day and documented in the CMMS through reports, dashboards and other documentation.

Right to Repair: What you need to know and how to contribute
Right to repair is an issue of increasing importance and urgency in the healthcare technology management (HTM) community. In recent decades, a formerly harmonious relationship between most manufacturers and clinical engineering/HTM professionals has been strained by some manufacturers’ practice of restricting access to parts, tools, documentation and software. Frustration with the resulting equipment downtime and additional costs has caused many HTM professionals to join the call for medical right to repair, which has been considered in dozens of states and at the federal level. In this session, we’ll discuss the issues at the core of this debate – including concerns about patient safety, remanufacturing, cybersecurity and more – and share updates on the progress of medical right to repair legislation.
