AHRA CAMPAIGN PROMOTES GROWTH, INNOVATION

For over 50 years, the Association for Medical Imaging Management (AHRA) has been the premier professional organization that represents the voices of more than 5,000 medical imaging leaders in over 2,500 health care facilities. AHRA, aligned with its philanthropic arm the AHRA Education Foundation (EF), dedicated to educating, developing, and mentoring medical imaging professionals, is proud to announce the Living Our Legacy campaign. This multi-year effort will allow for sustainable growth, foster innovation, and position AHRA to better support the professional advancement of its members. AHRA’s Living Our Legacy campaign is inviting its stakeholders to come together and invest in empowering the current and future generations of medical imaging leaders.

“AHRA’s mission – to provide quality education, relevant resources and top-notch leadership training – supports not only our longtime members but creates a pipeline of well-trained leaders who are adequately prepared to tackle challenges in the ever-evolving healthcare field,” shared Living Our Legacy Co-Chair and Vice President of Radiology & Pathology at University Health System Jason Theadore. “Through this campaign, AHRA will have the ability to sustain and update its programs, extend the reach of its resources for medical imaging professionals and, ultimately, have a positive impact on the patients we serve.”

The funds raised through the Living Our Legacy campaign will focus on:

• Research, Benchmarking & Best Practices: To equip imaging leaders with insights to assess how their departments are performing relative to industry standards, identify and prioritize areas of improvement, and strengthen their voices when making the case for changes at their institutions.

• Cross Functional Education & Leadership Development: To help imaging leaders at all levels expand their perspectives and knowledge beyond the radiology department and sharpen their business acumen and leadership skills.

• Thought Leadership: To create forum(s) that connect AHRA members, industry partners, and other relevant stakeholders to share forward-thinking ideas and identify new potential oppor-

tunities to advance medical imaging management.

• Advocacy & Outreach: To ensure the collective voice of imaging leaders is heard when examining key topics affecting the field, elevate recognition of medical imaging management and the crucial role it plays in health care, and cultivate a vibrant and diverse talent pipeline for the future.

Bayer, a long-time supporter of AHRA, is the campaign’s industry co-chair, participating as an Icon Level Partner.

“It is an honor for Bayer to support AHRA’s Living Our Legacy campaign and to serve as Co-Chair,” said Rich Dewit, Head of Global Digital Business, Bayer. “A multiyear campaign like this represents a way for members and industry to come together to develop innovative solutions and elevate the ever-increasingly important role medical imaging professionals play in health care.”

Thanks to the generous support of its members and landmark commitments from Bayer, GE Healthcare and United Imaging, AHRA’s campaign is off to an electric start with more than $4,000,000 pledged to the effort. These commitments, and many others that have been received demonstrate a shared commitment to empowering medical imaging professionals of today and tomorrow.

In a June email, AHRA states that “For over 50 years, the Association for Medical Imaging Management (AHRA) has been the premier professional organization that represents the voices of more than 5,000 medical imaging leaders in over 2,500 healthcare facilities. To date, AHRA, aligned with its philanthropic arm, the Education Foundation (EF), has secured more than $4.1 million to support the Living Our Legacy campaign.”

Funds generated through this multi-year campaign will ensure the sustainability of cornerstone programs while accelerating the development of new initiatives, with an immediate focus on research, benchmarking and expanding AHRA’s educational and leadership development curriculums.

AHRA invites members to participate by pledging support today. •

OF INNOVATION IN IMAGING.

The 2024 Annual Meeting, hosted August 4-7 in Orlando, Florida, will empower you to connect with experts leading the latest innovations in medical imaging technology and practice.

AHRA PRESIDENT TALKS ANNUAL MEETING, FUTURE

AHRA President Becky Allen is also the vice president of operations at UC Medical Center. ICE Magazine recently interviewed her about her tenure as president and what AHRA members can expect in the future.

Q: What can attendees expect from AHRA’s 2024 Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida, August 4-7? Is there anything you’re particularly excited about?

A: I am extremely excited about the 2024 Annual Meeting! Our Annual Design team has been hard at work over the last 12 months preparing for this event. We have fantastic keynote speakers and sessions for everyone.

Our Aspiring Leaders sessions are specifically developed for new supervisors and managers in imaging. These sessions include budgeting, communication, patient satisfaction, quality, and negotiations, to name just a few topics.

The CRA Exam Workshop is available for those interested in taking the CRA exam. This provides an overview of content areas, including operations, finance, human resources, asset management, and communication.

Our Executive Leadership Workshop is tailored for current and aspiring leaders. This session is great for those interested in enhancing strategic thinking, decision-making, and leadership skills.

I’m also excited to see our vendor and industry partners in the exhibit hall, which we’ve renamed as the Gathering Place – it’s all about collaboration with our partners! This is a wonderful opportunity to take time to learn about new and exciting technologies.

The AHRA Annual Meeting in Orlando promises a rich and comprehensive experience, blending education, networking, innovation, and professional development. It’s an excellent opportunity for medical imaging professionals to stay updated on industry advancements, connect with peers, and gain valuable insights to enhance their careers.

Q: What are some of the biggest changes/advancements you have seen in medical imaging during your career?

A: Over the last 28 years, the biggest advancements I’ve seen include:

• The transition from film to digital and picture archiving and communication system (PACS). This allowed for immediate access to images from any location.

• MRI and CT advancements, such as high resolution and functional imaging,

• 3D and 4D imaging, detailed anatomical views and the visualization of dynamic processes.

• Molecular imaging and PET now allow for visualization of metabolic processes, aiding in cancer diagnosis. This also moves us one step forward to theragnostic care for treatment of some cancers.

• Artificial intelligence and machine learning are assisting in the detection of diseases, improving accuracy, reducing interpretation times and streamlining workflows.

• Advances in interventional radiology have enabled a range of minimally invasive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures guided by imaging, reducing the need for open surgeries.

Q: What are the top challenges you and other medical imaging directors/leaders face now?

A: Some of the major challenges in medical imaging include:

• Workforce shortages: We’re seeing this across all modalities – this is probably the most critical issue that I hear about each day.

• Cost and accessibility: High cost for advanced imaging limits access to patients. Health care disparities require us to be intentional about ensuring equitable access to state-of-the-art imaging across different populations and regions.

• Data management and storage: Now more than ever, we have access to a vast amount of data. This requires seamless integration between different systems.

• Radiation exposure: Balancing the diagnostic benefits of imaging techniques, particularly CT scans, with the risks associated with radiation exposure is critical. Ongoing efforts are needed to develop and implement techniques that minimize radiation doses without compromising image quality.

• Regulatory and ethical issues: Protecting patient privacy and ensuring compliance with regulations (e.g., HIPAA) is crucial with the increasing use of digital and AI-driven technologies. The integration of AI in medical imaging raises questions about accountability and liability in case of diagnostic errors. Other regulatory issues, such as Appropriate Use Criteria (AUC), or ethical issues, such as remote scanning, will continue to be challenges for medical imaging directors which is why the

AHRA President, Becky Allen

AHRA Regulatory Affairs Committee plays such an important role for our members.

• Workforce training and adaptation: With such rapid advancements in imaging technologies, there is a need for continuous learning and embracing new systems.

Q: What challenges do you expect in the near future?

A: I see workforce shortages continuing for the next three to five years. The field of medical imaging is poised to face several challenges in the near future, driven by continuous advancements in technology, changes in health care delivery, and the evolving regulatory landscape.

One challenge I hope we can work on sooner rather than later is translational research, from “bench to bedside,” and bridging the gap between research innovations and clinical applications. This will ensure that new imaging technologies and techniques benefit patients in a timely manner. If we can bridge the time of this, we can change the trajectory for some patients that are now waiting without a cure.

Q: How long have you been an AHRA member and why?

A: I’ve been a part of AHRA for over 20 years. When I was new to radiology management, I didn’t have a good mentor to lean on. I was learning on the job and felt lost.

In 2004, I was nominated by my staff for AHRA’s Award for Excellence. I’m not sure how they knew about this award or the association, but this recognition set me up for success by welcoming me to this very special community.

I encourage everyone to learn more about AHRA and join us. This association provides numerous benefits for professionals in the medical imaging field, such as:

• Professional development and continuing education: AHRA offers various educational programs, including webinars, workshops, and conferences. We lean on experts to help us understand the latest trends, technologies, and best practices in medical imaging management.

• Certification programs: AHRA’s Certified Radiology Administrator® (CRA®) credential is a respected certification that validates your expertise and commitment to the field.

• Networking and community engagement: AHRA events and online forums provide opportunities to connect with peers, industry leaders, and experts in medical imaging management. These connections lead to valuable collaboration, mentorships, and career opportunities. The Annual Meeting is our premier event for imaging leaders, featuring keynote speakers, educational sessions, and opportunities to engage with vendor and industry partners.

• Advocacy and policy: AHRA represents the interests of its members in policy discussions and regulatory matters, ensuring that the voices of imaging administrators are heard in the development of health care policies. Through advocacy efforts, AHRA works to shape the future of medical imaging, influencing standards, regulations, and best practices to improve the field.

Q: Where do you see the future of imaging in five years? Ten years?

A: I really wish I had the crystal ball to predict what the future would look like! My best guess would be the following two areas:

• Personalized and precision medicine: The integration of genomics with imaging data (radiogenomics) will provide a more comprehensive understanding of diseases at the molecular level, leading to more tailored plans. Imaging will play a crucial role in guiding and monitoring targeted therapies, such as those used in oncology, ensuring that treatments are effective and adjusted as needed.

• Telemedicine and Remote Collaboration: The demand for teleradiology services will increase, allowing radiologists to provide expertise to remote locations and during off hours. Remote scanning will become the norm, improving health care equity for the most vulnerable individuals.

The future of imaging will be marked by technological innovations, improved patient care, and greater integration within health care systems. We’ll continue to adapt to new roles and responsibilities, leveraging advancements to enhance diagnostic accuracy, efficiency and patient outcomes.

Q: What were some key objectives you aimed to achieve during your tenure as AHRA president? Are there key accomplishments and progress you can share?

A: One of my main goals this past year was to position AHRA as a leader in medical imaging, while also exploring potential collaboration with other associations that wanted to help us fulfill our mission.

We’ve made great strides in forming meaningful relationships that will help advance our profession and the entire industry. We’ve worked with so many wonderful organizations, such as AAPM, ARRT, ASRT, JRCERT, RBMA, SDMS, ACR, IAC, TJC, MITA, and RadSite. AHRA members served on the Sonographer Scope of Practice Task Force and the AHRA Board of Directors unanimously endorsed the updated scope of practice for sonographers.

We are leading a task force on remote MRI scanning with representatives from many organizations, as well. AHRA is also involved in discussing innovative ways to help workforce shortages and pathways for growth for our medical imaging community.

I am incredibly proud of the work we’re doing across associations and excited to see where these partnerships will take us next.

Q: Is there anything else you want to add?

A: It has been an absolute privilege to serve as president of AHRA this year. We have a terrific board of directors that leans into our mission, vision, and values. They provide the strategic direction and, above all, places AHRA and our members at the center of all decisions.

I must also give a huge thank you to our volunteers, from those who serve on the board of directors, to committees and task forces. Without them, we wouldn’t be where we are today. I encourage everyone to get involved and help shape the future of the AHRA! •
