Design in Wilmington. Natchev places considerable premium upon securing a sound command of precise details of place and costume in his pictures. This commitment to capturing a scene objectively motivates him to research considerations of atmosphere and color connected with some of the exotic locales he treats in pictorial form. As a consequence, he is able to inject a strong sense of credibility to balance the feeling for offbeat content that provides the foundation of his creative vision. This approach is also very evident in the watercolor compositions he made for several children’s stories by the author Brian Jacques that are on display in the show. Typically, this same spirit of authenticity shows up in a striking scene of a holiday seder celebration, out of doors, in a distant venue. What makes this especially

Incidentally, I must also say this picture brought back memories of experiences I recalled from holidays I spent as a child, growing up many years ago, in New York City. The subject matter of

New KidzooU — Educational and just plain fun!

he KidzooU will hopefully produce graduates who don’t scream when they see a rat and who think pigeons are rather nice, not the scum that public officials often dictate should be ignored and never encouraged. The KidzooU student body is, as the name indicates, kids from toddlers to teens who will visit and revisit the new children’s zoo at the Philadelphia Zoo. The new addition opened April 13 at a cost of $33 million after two years of work. There were about 21,000 visitors the first Saturday and Sunday. “Our No. 1 goal is to create empathy and show the kids they have the power to create change,” Andrew Baker, director of operations for the Philadelphia Zoo, said. “We hope they will seek ways to improve conservation by acting to solve a problem rather than just looking at it.” In one exhibit, the rear of a large recycling truck faces out where children can place paper boxes and glass bottles on a conveyer belt. As each object reaches the top and is deposited into the truck, a picture of a parakeet or budgee bird lights with words saying that another parakeet has been saved. This only appears when the child chooses an object that can be recycled. “We gave the kids a choice of what to put on the conveyer belt,” said Marina Haynes, the curator the KidzooU. “Every time they choose something that can be recycled and helps

The new KidzooU will be headquarters for the Championing for Rescuing Endangered Wildlife program for teens, who will spend three years learning how to help in animal conservation efforts and will receive a certificate at the end of the time. There will also be a junior program and one for younger children “We are going to try to find out what the children are learning and how much they are retaining about conservation,” Haynes said. “We feel there is hope in teaching children the connection between what they do and saving endangered species and helping the planet and that hope rests in teaching the message to children,” she said. “Sometimes, it seems to be more helpful to teach conservation to their children than to their parents.” Among the new children’s zoo sponsors are Dorrance Campbell, the Campbell Soup heiress, and her family and Richard K. Faris, software businessman and zoo board member. — Diane Fiske can be reached at dfiske_19118@ yahoo.com.
