The Gratz Gallery and hidden treasures

An example of the fine restoration work available at Gratz Gallery and Conservation Studio in Doylestown.

By Adam Crugnale t’s happened before: an elderly member of the family passes away, and that faded old painting over the fireplace gets taken down and stored in an attic. Fifty years later, the painting is found again, dusted off, admired by all. Then comes that burning question, “I wonder if it’s worth anything?” On May 5 the Gratz Gallery in Doylestown will be hosting its recurrent “Appraisal Day,” the perfect time to bring that old painting or framework into the gallery to learn its worth. The last time the gallery held this event, in 2010, it was wildly successful, with many

I

pieces of art being bought and sold throughout the day. “It was out of control,” said Lauren Bradley, the assistant gallery director at the Gratz. “It got to the point of people coming into the gallery from Philadelphia and beyond to have their work looked at and appraised.” Due to the popularity of this event, the gallery is requesting that all patrons present no more than two paintings for appraisal. “The Antiques Roadshow,” on PBS, made popular the idea of artistic treasure in an attic or basement. It also helped in spreading the love of old art, or simply the discovery of old art. The bad news?

A fascinating feature of the Gratz Gallery that sets it apart is restoration of old art. This operation is headed by Paul Gratz, owner of the Gratz Gallery and Conservation Studio. If something is discovered as Appraisal Day unfolds, the gallery will be able to offer a reliable estimate of its worth as well as the possibility of restoration. Appraisal Day serves as a

great way to bring in people who might not otherwise consider themselves interested in the “art scene.” “Sometimes people can get intimidated by the art world,” said Bradley, “and one of the great things about an event like this is that people who would normally not come in the studio do come in, and some bring things in with them.”

Waterfront plan receives unanimous approval

An artist’s conception of how Penn’s Landing will appear when the Delaware riverfront project is finally completed.

By Diane M. Fiske oon it may not be necessary to calculate when you can rush in front of racing traffic to cross Route I-95 and get to the Delaware River waterfront. That “soon” has already started, but the entire process may take about 35 years. Last month the Philadelphia Planning Commission voted to adopt the master plan for the central Delaware River with a unanimous vote. The plan does a number of things. For starters, it reunites neighborhoods with the six miles of Delaware riverfront from Allegheny to Oregon Avenue. It provides a number of small parks and recreation areas for the public to enjoy in their own communities and it establishes a basis for private development. While the plan took six

S

years to develop, it is projected to take 35 years to reach complete realization at a cost of $750 million in private and public funding. “That is a reasonable amount of time for a largescale development like this,” said Harris Steinberg, a planning professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Design. He is also the head of the Penn Praxis team that helped organize the beginning of the process in which about 30 community meetings were held seeking public opinion about waterfront development. He added, “After all, it took 100 years for the Benjamin Franklin Parkway to be completed, and it still is not finished.” In the community meetings, individuals were asked for their opinions regarding what could be done to offset the neglect of the once thriving piers that had been abandoned since the demise of

the industries that owned the riverfront properties. The fact that I-95 separates the waterfront from access to streets from Allegheny to Oregon exacerbates the problem of isolating the riverfront. Northern Liberties resident Matt Ruben, who teaches English at Bryn Mawr and Haverford, is president of the Northern Liberties Community Organization and a leader in the Central Delaware Advisory Group, an umbrella organization that includes about 20 riverfront neighborhood organizations. He cheers the progress. “This began in the fall of 2006 with Harris Steinberg. ... We participated in a series of public meetings. We have to make sure we continue to be active and continue to watch and be ready to react and take part in the public process,” Ruben said. He said the Nutter administration has been encouraging

and cooperative, but vigilance may be necessary when other administrations take over in the future. “Public participation is what distinguishes this from past waterfront proposals,” Ruben said. The Delaware River Waterfront Corporation compiled the final plan and is now in charge of its implementation. According to Sara Thorp, director of planning for the DRWC, the first steps of the plan have been well under way. Last year the Race Street Pier, designed by James Corner, who designed the famous Hi Line pier in New York, opened. The design took an abandoned pier and created a two-tiered recreation site where visitors could jog, exercise or ride bicycles on the lower deck of the square-mile pier. And on the upper deck they could relax, look at the scenic landscap-

ing and trees or pretend they were on a boat. The pier extends more than 500 feet over the river. Another project, the Washington Avenue Park, is an example of development of the master plan, which is to develop small parks and recreation areas throughout the waterfront community. In addition, some of the other projects include improvements to Race Street leading to the river to include lighting, landscaping and new sidewalks. There will also be a bicycle landing and realignment of the ramp to I-95. The challenge of crossing I-95 will be met with long- and short-term plans, which will include a proposal to cap the crossing to Penn’s Landing Park and cover the interstate between Chestnut and Walnut streets to “provide solutions to difficult waterfront access and reduce the impact of I-95,” according to the DRWC in

its report “Transforming the Waterfront.” The design, which was done by Cooper-Robertson & Partners, a planning firm of New York and Landscape designers Olin of Philadelphia, calls for a community park at Penn’s Landing and a waterfront trail along Delaware Avenue. There will be about a dozen overpasses from connector streets to reach the waterfront and improved crossing, including underpasses, in others. There are tangible results of the plan, but the entire process will take time. And that is good. When it was passed unanimously by the planners, Commissioner Nancy Trainer said she liked the fact that it is “incremental.” Thorp said, “The plan is divided into near-term, midterm, and long-term proposals and some of the public improvements have already been completed. We are in negotiations to acquire more piers.” She said the DRWC just made overtures to buy Pier 70-80. An important aspect of the plan is to encourage private development, which will include more residential, small-scale building. About 90 percent of the land in the area is privately owned. The master plan calls for the development of the Delaware River waterfront so that it will rival Boston and Baltimore in attracting residents and tourists, but its strong goal, according to Thorp, is to be intrinsically Philadelphia. — This is a monthly column about architecture, urban design and city planning. If You Go “Rockwell Kent, Voyager” will be on view

n the art world, reaching a position of considerable prominence can prove to be very fickle. At a given time, one may enjoy a bright and sparkling reputation. Income may be arriving both from connoisseurs anxious to acquire selections of one’s creative work and from substantial commissions for all sorts of special projects. And then, it can all fade. For any number of possible reasons, the bubble goes poof and pops out of sight. In due course, the elevated standing in the critical scene dies down and with it the sources of notoriety and revenue gradually go dry. This was very much the case with Rockwell Kent. Famous for six decades in the early years of his career, he died in 1971, virtually a has-been. His star grew dim and then went to the very brink of limbo. For a long time, Kent had enjoyed recognition as an eminent painter, printmaker, book illustrator, author, world traveler, successful farmer and even a political activist. One of his most notable accomplishments was the set of illustrations he prepared for a phenomenally successful edition of Melville’s “Moby Dick.” However, in spite of all his good fortune in all of these different undertakings, he is best remembered

depicts the collision of a huge spheroidshaped object (perhaps an asteroid or a space vehicle) impacting the surface of the moon. It’s fascinating to see how Kent could give his imagination free rein in the area of science fiction back in 1937. Perhaps his own experiences, wandering far and wide on planet Earth, motivated him to wonder what it would be like to travel beyond the limits of the world he had already touched with his own feet. Along these lines, one of the most haunting items in the show is a woodengraving titled “Voyaging (Self Portrait) or Wayfarer.” It offers an image of the artist contemplating a setting in which vague flying forms seek to break free of Earth’s gravity. Clearly, the possibility of unlimited travel, beyond the planet’s orbit, was a topic to which Kent dedicated considerable thought. His belief in unbounded possibilities for human exploration — physically, spiritually, intellectually, politically and creatively — gave his best work a flavor of moral strength in the service of reaching for goals situated beyond one’s immediate grasp. Without question, his was a vision devoted to the pursuit of idealized human growth and ever more meaningful personal achievement.

Two of his brothers and nephew were monks, and he respected their spiritual monastic life. His creativity led him to explore an imaginary, humorous side of his subjects. This exhibition is made possible through a partnership with the WYSO Foundation and in collaboration with Yocam Institute for Art Education, Wyomissing PA,
