‘Warm-blooded’ ceramics grace Michener Museum

That’s fine, as far as it goes.

On the other hand, there are a rare few among them who seek to achieve a higher level of accomplishment. Quite properly, they deserve to be thought of as exceptionally talented artists, not just inspired artisans. Marian Pritchard, a truly esteemed Philadelphia area ceramicist, is surely one of them.

Her deep commitment to the realization of excellence in her work is soundly supported by the following quotation, “I want to make cold, hard porcelain, warm-blooded.” In fact, this means she constantly tries to bring miracles to

for the high aesthetic character and the inspired depth of expression present in the artworks on view.

Generally, the items in the show take shape in one of two forms. The majority are vessels. The others are abstract compositions of stone, shell, sand and/or ceramic elements. They seem to me to be objects that present themselves to your eye as still-life sculptures. Beyond that description, these latter artworks are not really like anything else you may have seen elsewhere. Instead, they are unique in their own being and entirely different from anybody else’s aesthetic pro-

ductivity that I am aware of.

Perhaps these subtle horizontal arrangements of mineral substance may be best described as studies for Zen-like contemplation. They can also be thought of as strikingly attractive harmonies of nonverbal poetry.

As such, they offer states of silence inviting audiences to study them without preformed expectations or prejudice.

To look at them with open eye and open mind is to make room inside yourself for potentially expansive experiences that are both nondescriptive and nonrepresentational.

Instead, by the relationships of the various visual elements to each other, all of these uni-

fied constellations of artistic form assert an independence of artistic existence. Every particle of their being contributes to this condition with its mood of ultimately balanced order and serene feeling of cosmic peace.

As far as the vessels are concerned, there is an awesome contrast between the visible exterior of the containers and the secret of what may lie within. Like the puzzle of what we can see on the outside of people compared to their invisible interior, we can only guess about what may or may not be located inside these beautifully glazed pots.

As a source of endless wonderment, you can be cer-

tain of what exists or doesn’t exist inside the vases only if they are broken open. Obviously, if something tangible had been placed within them, each one’s identity would then be revealed. Of course, if they are simply left intact, they still remain valuable as silent monuments dedicated to timelessly suspended mystery and hauntingly elegant tranquility.

And then, their role as sculpture may remain marvelously triumphant in the form of stunningly glazed upright forms in space. And in addition, they can also invite speculation on the nature and meaning of possible emptiness or fullness, with all that that may imply.

alking with Revolutionary War heroes like George Washington and Thomas Jefferson on princess phones in an underground museum might have been cutting-edge in 1976, but it is not in the 21st century, when teenagers have no idea what a dial phone is.

The dial phones were featured in the underground Franklin Court Museum exhibit that opened in 1976 for the bicentennial observation.

In front of the museum, the “Ghost House,” a steel outline of Benjamin Franklin’s longdemolished house by worldrenowned architects Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown, was the prominent feature of the courtyard behind the re-created Benjamin Franklin post office and general store at 3rd and Chestnut streets.

Now, 37 years after the Bicentennial, the museum has undergone a major facelift, but the “Ghost House” remains as an example of a timeless and innovative teaching tool.

Visitors can now learn about

Architect Carl Elefante of Quinn Evans Architects in Washington, D.C., project director for the renovation of the museum, said regarding the “Ghost House” process, “Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown attempted to make an honest representation of Franklin’s life, honest like the outline of the house.”

Elefante said he admired the fact that the “Ghost House” conveyed the idea of Franklin’s home in an outline form that viewers could fill in with their own interpretations uncluttered with displays of furniture and decorations.

Elefante said the renovation process, which began in 2001, found Franklin Court in “shady condition,” an underground display left over from the 1970s featuring outdated telephones and uninviting exhibits.

He said the new museum, which opened to the public last month, will feature a Franklin home that will make the visitor feel he knows the famous statesman after visit-

One of the aspects of the new museum is that there will be space for customer service and guards. In the old museum, Elefante said, people just moved into a dark underground space.

The $23 million renovation was made possible through a public-private partnership involving the Pew Charitable Trusts, Gerry Lenfest, the William Penn Foundation, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the City of Philadelphia and the Independence Visitor Center.

Funds from these sources more than doubled the funds available through federal dollars from the National Park Service.

Kent and Wyeth’s paintings, when viewed together, depict a century’s worth of Monhegan life and landmarks. The exhibition will include examples of some of Wyeth’s most recent paintings and a number of works from his personal collection of Kent’s coastal views of the Monhegan headlands. Wyeth’s paintings, on the other hand, focus on the people who inhabit the island. The exhibition features oil paintings, watercolors, drawings, and one of Kent’s sketchbooks from Monhegan.
