1

Problem

Regaining and increasing strength for people with spinal cord injuries is crucial but with limited movement exercising becomes difficult. Access to fitness is lacking because traditional weights, machines, and gyms are not accommodating for people with SCI.

All existing bands either have no grip or a gripping system that would be hard for a person with SCI to grip. Each & every resistance band has the same basic grip which could easily be let go if a person does not have a tight grip on it & that could cause injury.

Prototypes

Left: Photographed are variations of prototypes. The top two: Photographs of the process of sewing the final product together. The wrist guard (blue) and the hand strap black) pieces before they are sewn.

9

Prototypes Several iterations of this product were necessary in order to test different materials. Testing for pressure points and comfortableness of the product was important. The first prototype was made with webbing. The second was made with webbing and a hard plastic. The plastic led to too many pressure points, and was uncomfortable so then I worked with leather and neoprene. The neoprene was most comfortable, and the most breathable so that was the material chosen. 1

Product / Grip Fit

The finished product is a comfortable grip system that allows someone with SCI to easily slip their hand into. It is open underneath the hand to be comfortable in any orientation when doing a variety of workouts. The hand strap gives stability and control of the resistance band.
