inding love is worth celebrating. And whether it's done in a simple church ceremony or lavish three-day affair, two people making a commitment to cherish and support one another through life's ups and downs is a beautiful thing. In our second annual full length brides issue, we celebrate the people and businesses who help make those celebrations special and memorable. From the engagement ring to the honeymoon, this issue is full of tips, information and ideas from your neighbors. This issue also has heart — four couples share their stories of love and celebration. We were smitten with their stories — from the guy who dressed as santa in the summer to propose to the couple who faced a heartbreaking loss in their first year of marriage. And in this issue we also celebrate the fun in saying 'I do.' We share a few unique ideas for bachelorette parties and our fashion writer Meredith Pruden gives the inside scoop on some of the hottest dresses to walk down the aisle in this year. Special thanks to Brigita Rowe for allowing us the use of Cedar Plantation for our cover shoot and Dyer & Posta salon for lending us the talented Shannon Silva and Crystal Phillips for the day. You can watch a behind-the-scenes video of the photo shoot at www.cobblifemagazine.com. We hope you enjoy. — Stacey L. Evans

love at first bite Pastry has played a part in marriage rituals since ancient Roman times. Barley cakes and sweet buns were some of the earliest choices for the bridal party. It wasn’t until the mid 16th century that refined sugar became plentiful and pure white icing turned into a wedding cake staple. Today, wedding cakes run the gamut from subtle and elegant to fun, over-the-top creations. The unifying factor, local bakers say, is the designs are representing the personal visions of the bride and groom. Jamie Fine, owner of Sugarplum Visions in Marietta, has been bringing brides’ cake fantasies to life since 2002. Her cake artisans have fashioned elaborate wedding cakes for celebrities and special events, including “Cut the Ribbon, Cut the Cake,” Tybee Island Wedding Chapel’s celebration
hosted by celebrity event designer David Tutera. “For TLC’s Say Yes to the Dress Atlanta premiere party we designed a couture cake inspired by a fabulous Rivini gown, as well as custom cupcakes and wedding dress cookie favors,” Fine said. Brides are becoming more aware of and open to the endless possibilities of custom cake design, she noted. “This can be overwhelming for some. But simple or ornate, we enjoy guiding each client through the process of having their wedding cake vision become reality.”

One trend in wedding cakes in the last year has been taller tiers, Fine said. Offset stacking is often used to create height and interesting dimension to traditional symmetrically stacked cakes. “One trend we are really seeing is people being more open to something different. There is a creative awareness of the possibilities of the cake,” Fine said. “While elements of fashion such as lace, draping and From left, jewelry are still very Marietta residents Lea popular in wedding Garner, and cake design, we are Jamie Fine, seeing cakes become owner of canvases for our cake Sugarplum artists in 2012. • 198 spacious guestrooms • 22,000 square feet of meeting space “I call it the bling-bling cake, which I see a lot of now. Brides want that shimmer, pop and sparkle which stones give,” Paine said. “I do love that look but that type of cake may start at $5 a slice because those stones and ribbons are very expensive. “I also see a lot of brides ordering a six-inch cake top to cut and then a dessert bar, which is fun too. That’s a big trend I think we’ll see in 2012.” Avante offers butter cream, cream cheese and fondant frostings with an array of flavors and typically customizes cakes and flavors for each person. Kimberley Radwick of Sweet Caroline’s Cakes said both traditional and couture cakes have been in design, with brides adding personal touches with extras like flowers or feathers. She can recall one particularly elaborate cake with 2,500 hand-made sugar flowers. “Cakes are becoming like canvases with brides and grooms using their imaginations to come up with fabulous designs, adding their unique flair to their confection,” Redwick said. She expects to see more hand-painted designs, small amounts of bling and a little sparkle on cakes in 2012.

Advice from Jamie Fine on choosing a wedding cake Plan ahead. Way ahead. It’s not too soon to start booking for the popular spring and fall dates. Think of cake first and last. It is the centerpiece for guests entering your reception as well as their final course. Price is not everything. Be sure you like the quality and flavor of your cake and are comfortable with the style and service your bakery provides. Use an established, licensed commercial bakery for special events. Wellmeaning friends and relatives will enjoy sharing your day with you rather than baking a cake. Save room for dessert, both in your budget and your body. Especially if you would like a specially decorated cake or have a large crowd to feed. Relax, smile and enjoy the process.

making a statement He popped the question and the date’s been set. So what’s next? Wedding invitations should be at the top of the to-do list and there is no shortage of options. From letterpress to illustrations, brides can express themselves in a number of ways. Marietta resident Tiffany Westbrook, owner of Gala Design, cranks out custom creations for her clients. “I don’t like to do anything cookie-cutter, and there seemed to be a need for certain brides who couldn’t find what they wanted in a book. That’s when you would come to someone like me,” Westbrook said. She said brides should first decide if they need a save-the-date card, generally reserved for destination weddings or those in which most of the guest list lives out of town. need to know what colors will be predominant in the wedding. After that, the fun begins. “Patterns and textures bleeding off the page is a trend, whether it be a floral design or any kind of pattern,” Westbrook said. While she appreciates patterns, Westbrook prefers they have special meaning, like the one she copied from the embroidery on a client’s wedding dress. “I think the patterns look nice a lot of times in trends, but if they don’t have meaning, then it just looks nice,” Westbrook said. She also strays away from the usual 5x7 card, favoring a more unique design. “I like to do folds and twists and multiple pages that are fastened,” Westbrook said. “What I create is one-of-a-kind.” Kennesaw resident Tawania Thigpen, owner of The Paper Knot, said cost, customization and creativity – the three Cs – are trends she is seeing.

<<Many brides like the elegant, classic look and feel of letterpress. The deep impress of the color and lettering on thick textured paper captures the whimsical theme of the invitation design and makes it “pop”. Because the design was whimsical and feminine, the bride wanted to bleed both a script font and a masculine, block style font to appeal to her fiance’s style as well. To bring a richness in color to the package, the envelopes were lined with a deep red, textured liner. —Tawania Thigpen, The Paper Knot
>>In this invitation, the bride wanted to be surprised. She requested something different and unique using her wedding colors of yellow and teal. One of the trends at that time was paisley designs. What I decided to do was design the invitation using letterpress, but take it to the next level by printing it on specialty paper, Curious Touch (the stock feels smooth, like suede). —Tawania

For a non-traditional look, we used an ornate pattern design bordering the stationery, and a banner motif set at an angle to add variety. A specialty font placed in strategic places adds artistic flair. The invitations were delivered in matching blue envelopes, which were lined with a vellum stock with the same ornate pattern design used on the stationery, printed in the Grass Green color. Tawania Thigpen The Paper Knot 678.270.8992 www.thepaperknotweddings.com “Sometimes you look in the magazine and you see all these great ideas from Martha Stewart, but when I tell you how much it actually costs, it may change the dynamics a little bit,” Thigpen said. That’s when Thigpen swoops in and assuages clients’ fears with a little ingenuity. “You can get the great look at an economical price,” she said. Changing the size and/or shape of an invitation helps. “When you go with an odd size, it increases postage costs,” Thigpen said. As for customization, Thigpen said many brides want invitations that truly represent themselves and their fiancés. “I had one client who was of Caribbean roots and she wanted to be very flavorful and colorful,” Thigpen said. Invitations printed on faux wood and metal are two “out-of-the-box” options Thigpen has created for clients. The metal complements industrial settings well and faux wood works for certain themes and ideals. “It’s a look that has been popular, especially individuals that want to be green or they’re having their wedding in the fall and they want to make sure it goes with the season,” Thigpen said. Embellishments, such as a lined enveloped which weighs a little more, can make minimal design appear more expensive.

Though still in the planning stages, the couple wants their wedding to be classically beautiful. “It’s going to be very green and white, very natural looking. Clint is very outdoorsy, so we are going to try to bring the outdoors in with natural flowers and décor,” said Laurie. “We want tradition and classic with a few fun surprises thrown in here and there. We also want to take care of our guests and our wedding party. It’s not just about me and Clint but all the people who are coming together who love us and support us.” At this stage Laurie said the planning has been exciting and stress-free, and she has her mother to thank for that. “I’ve been blessed; my mom is the party planning, organization queen,” she said. “She carries around a book and she works with all the vendors and she’s been wonderful. She’s been a huge help.” But while planning her dream wedding is exciting, it’s the days after the big day that Laurie is most looking forward to. “What I’m looking forward to most is finally living together,” said Laurie. “I’m excited about coming home every night and having dinner together and talking about our day. I can’t wait to see where the future takes us, what adventures we get to go on together.” Clint agrees. “I am really looking forward to starting a family and home with Laurie,” said Clint. “I love her so much and can’t wait to live with her and continue to grow in life together.”

Clint: I love how Laurie cares for others and is fun-loving. She is friendly, pleasant, and great company in general. She’s smart and a hard worker. We are a great couple because we often complement each other. We are a good balance socially and domestically (from what I can tell without living together). Laurie: Clint is kind, sincere, genuine, and compassionate. His calm and even temperament balances out my wild and craziness. We have the same morals and beliefs and having him in my life makes me a better person. We have a similar sense of humor and we love to laugh with and at each other! He is the first person I want to talk to when something wonderful or something horrible happens and he truly knows what to do and say to make me feel better. He is my best friend and is such a good friend to so many other people. You can always count on Clint when you need him. I can’t imagine a day without him.

WOW make your vows
A Wedding Planner Can Help With That
Getting married is one of the most exciting experiences in a woman’s life. Going from girlfriend to fiancée to wife is a dizzying ride that’s left more than one bride breathless on the romantic road leading to the altar. On that special journey between the proposal and your wedding day lies a vast territory of details and discoveries. Despite all the people who are invested in your present and future happiness (best friends, family, favorite co-workers) this journey-of-a-lifetime is best taken with an extra person by your side that you might not have even met yet. Someone who is a combination tour guide, guru and go-getter. Someone with a map and a magic wand. That someone is a wedding planner. On the day you marry all you want to think about is the person you love and this moment you’ve been waiting for. The only tears you shed should be tears of pure joy, not tears of frustration because of a missing DJ, flowers that wilted on delivery or because a venue got the number of chairs wrong. Wedding planners are many people to the bride-to-be: director, designer, confidante, deal-getter, problem-solver, advice-giver and finally, star-maker. Your wedding is your big day, the location is the setting for your special production and you, the bride, are the star of the show. Do you know of any stars who don’t get special assistance to help them shine their brightest? We don’t either.

Angela Hawkinson of An Exquisite Event planned the outdoor wedding of Liz and Chris Prillamen (see their story on page 58) at the Marietta Campground. The wedding combined elements of vintage chic with the rustic outdoors. Right, this moss monogram is a unique, personal touch.

There are really only two times you need a wedding planner; when you have an indoor wedding and when you have an outdoor wedding. Especially if you have an outdoor wedding. Angela Hawkinson of An Exquisite Event is an expert in guiding couples who want to tie the knot outside and with 15 years of experience, she is well versed on how to work with Mother Nature.
: : : : : : : : : : angela’s tips for outdoor weddings : : : : : : : : : : 1 Outside weddings are beautiful but challenging and weather is unpredictable. Always have a Plan B just in case. Reserve in advance a back-up space that is in a building, like a hotel (not a tent). Remember that even if it rains a few days prior to your nuptials, the area could be muddy on your wedding day. 2 When picking a natural setting to have your wedding, consider any noise that might intrude. Passing cars, planes and other outdoor events going on nearby can make it hard for guests to hear you say “I do”. 3 Prepare for un-invited guests. Passers-by in a park or sunbathers at a Angela Hawkinson beach may or may not bother you if they stop to watch, but there are some unwelcome guests who show up in the very best weather – bugs. Mosquitoes and other flying insects will annoy your wedding party. Have venue management spray the area in advance or add tiki torches filled with bug repellant to your decorations.

Bridget Baker uses an inspiration board, shown above, and props to help clients envision their wedding.
“A lot of people think a wedding planner is a luxury,” says Bridget Baker, owner of An Elegant Occasion in Kennesaw, “but planners can actually end up saving you money. Because we are in the wedding business we can often get discounts for you.” Baker enjoys staying on top of trends and themes and will often create an “inspiration board” full of ideas for clients.
: : : : : : : : bridget’s innovative ideas : : : : : 1 ”Rustic Chic” was a popular theme and now it’s moving to “Vintage Chic,” a look that is different but in the same family of ideas. It’s a look where you can implement touches like using vintage brooches instead of napkin rings and putting your candles in mason jars. 2 For seating: mismatched chairs or old church pews with interesting pillows make a charming and comfortable statement. 3 You don’t have to forgo formal completely, just mix it with casual – cowboy boots worn with tuxedos or even with gowns have been popular in recent years.

f you prefer an indoor or indoor/outdoor venue but are not planning on a church wedding, there are many options – country clubs, special event spaces and hotels all can host your wedding outdoors and your reception inside, or vice versa, says Donna Lipscomb, artist/designer and head consultant at Confetti. “Church brides are a rarity right now,” she reports, “Many brides are choosing a venue that accommodates both events. It’s cost-effective and a time-saver.” It eliminates traveling between locations and grappling with traffic. If there are elderly guests in attendance who have a hard time getting around it’s easy on them. Whatever kind of wedding you choose, a skilled wedding planner can help you stay true to your vision, stay within your budget, and make your special day a cherished memory. Donna Lipscomb of Confetti designs paper flower bouquets for a unique look.
: : : : : : : : : : donna’s creative tips : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : 1 Be flexible when picking a date. Pick a month, be flexible on the day and book early. There are a lot of brides in Atlanta and venues book up fast.
photos by In the Moment
2 Visit a venue first to make sure it’s appropriate for the size of your guest list. Too many guests in a small space is not comfortable. Too few guests in a large space has a cold, empty feel. 3 Pick a special touch that reflects your style. If you want to go green, use artistically constructed paper flowers. You will then get to see your flowers in advance and know exactly what they will look like. 4 It’s not just the bride’s entrance that should be breathtaking. Make a dramatic exit. When seeing the bride and groom off, have Taiwanese paper lanterns given to each guest. When lit, the lanterns lift up and float away, making for a beautiful photo opportunity as the newlyweds leave. (The lanterns are biodegradable and burn themselves out, also a green touch). If you are cautious about anything involving flame, use LED balloons filled with helium instead.

How To Pick A Wedding Planner It’s one of the most important short-term relationships of your life and should be approached like any valued association. Whether you need help with every detail, someone to assist only with location and vendors, or just a “day of” coordinator (which actually means having someone on hand for a month before you marry) here’s a start to finding your perfect planner:

FAVORITE THINGS: For one wedding Donna Lipscomb planned, the couple wanted each table to represent a thing or a place in Atlanta that was special to them. Personalizing your wedding with small touches really makes the day memorable.

*
Ask for recommendations from friends and co-workers. If you attend a wedding you particularly enjoy, ask who the coordinator was. It doesn’t have to be your style of wedding – that will be personalized for you – but note if the event went smoothly and everyone had a good time.
*
Google the kind of wedding you think you want and look at photos. Research and see who specializes in presenting the sort of special day (or night) that you envision.
*
Always meet a planner in person first and bring a list of what you already know about your nuptials. This should include budget and size of guest list, possible color choices, proposed venues and any special touches you want. Don’t worry if you don’t have everything figured out. That’s what a wedding planner is for!
*
Be clear on your expectations and ask if the planner can meet them. Note your comfort level as you talk, whether you feel heard, and if the planner shares your excitement about your wedding day. 2012

1 Draping can make a big room smaller if you want a more intimate space and can cover ugly spots in a room along with masking corners or doors you don’t need. 2 Don’t spend a fortune on flowers where you can substitute unique props or centerpieces. 3 Don’t forget the ceiling. A decorated ceiling can make any room look special. Chandeliers can be rented to add an elegant touch. 4 A simple tent can be transformed into a grand area with sophisticated sheer fabric and strategically placed lights, lanterns or touches of the outdoors brought inside. 5 For outdoor weddings in the evening, decorative lighting in trees adds a dramatic and memorable touch.

THE FOUR C S :
What you should look for when choosing a diamond Color — A colorless diamond emits more sparkle because it allows more light to pass through it. Truly colorless diamonds are rare, but diamonds graded G through I have color that is virtually invisible to the trained eye. Clarity — Refers to the prescence of flaws on the surface or within the stone. VVS and VS grades have great value and appearance, while grades SI1 and SI2, which are more affordable, have more flaws, but are still virtually impossible to see with the naked eye. Cut — Refers to the diamond’s reflective qualities, not its shape. The better the cut, the more brilliant the diamond’s shine. Carat — Refers to the weight of the diamond, not its size.

But just as all brides are unique, so can be the pre-wedding party that celebrates this special time and her special friendships. Whether it’s a relaxing spa date, a rowdy rooftop outing or a calm and classy evening with friends, there is no one-size-fits-all way to fete the modern bride-to-be. dinner and a show You don’t have to go to Times Square to have a festive evening of dinner and live theatre. A bachelorette party can do it up right by spending an evening on Marietta Square. Get the girls together for a nice meal and then a stroll to see some of the region’s finest actors live onstage. After dinner at Simpatico, Shillings or one of the many eateries nearby, head to Cobb’s longtime artistic treasure, Theatre In The Square. Their 2012 season of shows includes both comedy and drama, including “Flyin West” written by Oprah’s Book Club honoree Pearl Cleage. Group rates are available for parties of 12 or more. Go ahead, have a celebratory toast with your meal – you’ll be walking to the theatre.

It’s all about the rock. No, not that rock. The kind of rock you climb! Take the girlfriends who always encouraged you to aim higher and cheer them on (and upward) at Escalade Rock Climbing Gym. Rock climbing is great challenge and destressor. Tune out the world with your pals, test your vertical skills and have fun while learning to scale new heights. Escalade even has bouldering caves if your group feels intrepid. No problem if anyone in the bridal party is a beginner, a group session includes everything you need, including instruction.

Hot Trends in Parties * Rooftop parties are all the rage now for bridal showers and bachelorette parties. Whether you want to sit under the stars and bond with your besties or raise the roof with like-minded party girls, doing it with a view makes the occasion even more memorable. *Health-minded brides aren’t always on board with gorging at gettogethers. A “Bachelorette Boot Camp” weekend that includes celebratory wine or dessert tastings and group hikes, fitness runs or a yoga class combines the best of both worlds, with no worries about fitting into your wedding finery when the big day comes.

time to For many newly engaged women, the quest for the perfect wedding dress begins the moment immediately following, “I do.” Sure, she may call her folks to share the good news but the calls to local bridal salons to book shopping appointments are never very far behind. Whether a woman has dreamed of her fairy tale wedding since childhood or only since her beloved proposed, the bridal gown is often the centerpiece on which she builds the entire wedding extravaganza. Fortunately, for today’s brides, there are an abundance of fashionable dress styles ranging from traditional to totally modern. Here are four of the most stylish trends for the spring 2012 bridal season … and, we’ve even included some more conventional styles for good measure.

Illusion and Lace
Last season’s old world bridal details and the royal wedding from earlier this year have collided in this spring’s trend toward Illusion necklines and lace sleeves. Not always seen together, illusion necklines and lace sleeves are often found as separate styles but always lend themselves to an elegant, sophisticated feel for any wedding. The England Illusion gown by Blue by Enzoani in this spread happens to include both an illusion neckline and lace sleeves and will have you feeling nostalgic for a replay of William and Kate’s happy nuptials.
Up in the Air
A wedding dress doesn’t have to be highly structured or heavily constructed to be beautiful. This season’s ethereal, airy styles are as comfortable to wear as they are breathtaking for the big day. The After 6 gown featured in this issue of Cobb Life exemplifies just how romantic and graceful a less is more mentality can be when it comes to picking a wedding dress. What’s more? These delicate gowns work no matter where the ceremony will be taking place.
Lend me a Tier
Tiered skirts have long been a popular trend in bridal gowns and this season is no exception. What’s new for spring 2012, however, is the two-tiered skirt in everything from directional to bubble styles. This focus on hemlines replaces the previous season’s focus on texture and can really help slim the hip area. The House of Wu ruffled tiered skirt included in this spread isn’t two tiers but functions as a more widely available homage to the two-tier styles that recently hit the runway.
Color me Pretty
We first saw pops of color on the runways a few seasons ago and the trend is pushing boundaries for spring 2012. What was once reserved for belts and accents is out in full force this season and is no longer just tans and taupes! Blush and pink hues are all the rage right now and are gracing gowns in more than just accents. This issue of Cobb Life includes a Modeca gown with a deep red train that really speaks to how far the trend toward color has come. For the more adventurous bride, black dresses are out in full force for spring 2012, and we’ve got a House of Wu gown that epitomizes just how dramatic this look can be. Be sure to pair these colorful bridal gown trends with another popular trend for the coming year - colored (sometimes called fancy) diamond jewelry.

This strapless net, organza and silky taffeta gown by House of Wu (style #15477) features a sweetheart neckline, fully beaded bodice and trumpet skirt with layered ruffles, illustrating an easy to wear version of this season’s proliferance of tiered skirt styles. This intricately beaded gown called for minimalist jewelry and that’s just what the experts at Blackwell’s Jewelers kept in mind when they chose to skip the necklace and bracelet and focus on this exquisite platinum channel set emerald cut, baguette and princess cut diamond engagement ring ($12,989). This season’s ethereal bridal looks are effortlessly wearable and work just as easily at an afternoon church wedding as a destination soirée at the beach! This gown by After 6 (style #1038) is highlighted by a strapless chiffon bodice and full tulle ballerina skirt featuring a feather flower detail at the natural waist. The team at Blackwell’s Jewelers chose to add a little pizazz to this airy gown with an abundance of sapphire jewelry. Sapphires may be a bit nontraditional for wedding attire but it’s easy to see how truly show- stopping the look can be with this 18KT sapphire and diamond necklace ($6,000) and 18KT white gold sapphire and diamond earrings ($3,870). To really bring the look home, the team added an 18KT white gold sapphire and diamond bracelet and 18KT sapphire and diamond band ($9,500) to the platinum vintage style diamond engagement ring with antique diamond ($11,989). After 6 gowns are available at Bel Fiore.

For the more traditional bride,
there are some things that simply never go out of style. This strapless lace gown by Christina Wu for House of Wu (style #15479) with sweetheart, jewelembellished neckline and drop waist trumpet skirt gives a tip of the proverbial hat to classic silhouettes while the floral and feather accents on the skirt add a bit of modern flair for an elegant (yet fun) look.
Nothing says elegant quite like pearls, and the team at Blackwell’s Jewelers know this better than anyone, which is why they paired this 18KT white gold Tahitian pearl and diamond pendant ($3,895) and 18KT Tahitian black pearl and diamond ring ($4,985) with the lightly bejeweled gown. This Modeca gown (style: Nerida) plays with the spring trend toward blush and pink hues, kicking it up a notch with a beaded appliqué and pop of deep red in the train. The Ravello and silky taffeta gown features a mermaid silhouette, strapless scoop neckline and ruched bodice and waist before stealing the show with its eyecatching red wrap train. The red accent on this gown speaks for itself but the Blackwell’s Jewelers team thought it was also calling for this striking 18KT diamond and onyx pendant ($4,489) and platinum vintage diamond engagement ring with antique diamond ($11.989). Modeca gowns are available at Bravura and New Natalie’s Bridal.

stunningly sophisticated This drop waist, corset closure taffeta and organza gown by Jacquelin Exclusive (style #19881) features a floral skirt with semi-cathedral train that really adds textural sophistication, intricate detailing and luxurious construction to an otherwise subtle look. Although texture has been popular since last season, this dress is a quintessential stunner that will never go out of style. The experts at Blackwell’s Jewelers know a look this timelessly classic calls for truly extraordinary accessories and paired it with an 18KT white gold citrine and diamond pendant ($3,589) and citrine and diamond earrings ($7,689). Hair and makeup tips

FROM STYLE GURUS AT DYER AND POSTA
HAIR TRENDS: Crystal Phillips, who styled the hair of our models, said the latest trend is a loose, romantic style for the wedding day. Many brides are choosing to wear their hair down, or opting for an updo that has flowing pieces that frame the face. The trick to keeping a loose style in place is “lots of hairspray, sea salt spray and pins,” said Phillips. “A loose style has to be structured with a good foundation. Lots of teasing will help.” Braided accents and lots of texture are also hot trends. Whatever style you choose, Phillips said the most important thing is that the bride is relaxed. “You really want to be the most comfortable on your day,” she said. TIP: One prevailing myth Phillips hears from brides-to-be is that you should not wash your hair prior to the wedding to make it easier to style. “That is not true,” said Phillips. “You want your hair to be clean, especially on your wedding day. You can dirty it
up with products to make it look good and hold.” MAKEUP TRENDS: Shannon Silva, who made our covergirls look fabulous, said makeup should match a bride’s personality rather than the dress or decor. “It should be similar to what you wear day-to-day, but a little more enhanced,” she said. “That way you will feel more natural and more yourself on your big day. You don’t want makeup that’s overly dramatic so you don’t feel so much yourself.” TIPS: Use a primer (Silva recommends Smashbox Photo Finish). It makes makeup look softer in photos and blends everything together. To get into party mode for the reception, add a little blush or skin brightener on the cheeks, and enhance the corners of eyeshadow to make it a little bit richer. If your reception is at night, make your makeup a little darker and more dramatic. If you don’t like wearing foundation, you can use matte powder instead.

“Chris is from Maine and I am from Georgia, so I wanted to have a “Maine to Georgia” type theme to our ceremony,” said Liz. “The wedding fans (which were also the programs) had a map with a line connecting Maine and Georgia with a little peach and a lobster representing the states. It was fun designing them. On the table with the wedding book, we put old maps of Maine and antique plates I got from an antique store in Augusta, Maine. It was our way of bringing his home to mine.”
favorite moments: Liz: My favorite moment of the ceremony was walking down the aisle with my dad. I was so full of emotions and cried the whole way down! It was so awesome walking towards my future husband. My favorite moment of the reception was the toasts. They were so sweet and meant a lot to us. Chris: My wife walking down the aisle and the first dance at the reception. We caught everyone off guard with our moves.
favorite things: Liz: My favorite thing at the wedding was the table out front with pictures of our family members at their weddings. It was really special to have our grandparents and great grandparents’ portraits at the wedding. At the reception, my favorite thing was the anniversary dance. We had all the married couples at the reception dance and throughout the song, couples sat down when their years married were called. Finding out who the longest married couple was at the wedding was awesome! And they gave us great advice to not sweat the small stuff. 2012

how they met: We met on the first day of college! We were best friends for the first 1.5 years of college. People always thought we were dating and we would be like...ew gross no way. Turns out we were wrong! We were dating for about 2 years when he proposed. Liz: On my wedding day, I felt like a princess! Chris sent me flowers that morning, which made me feel so loved. All twelve (yes, twelve!) of my bridesmaids were wonderful. They helped me do everything and were so excited and supportive. I felt really beautiful, and was so excited to marry my best friend. Chris: Anytime we weren’t moving towards something I was nervous. Waiting to get dressed. Waiting for the trolley. Waiting in the trolley. Those were the hard parts.
the first dance:
Liz: Our first dance was “One Rainy Wish” by Jimi Hendrix. Before we were dating, we were just really good friends. We always listened to that song, and then when we started falling in love, it became ‘our song’. We didn’t tell anyone what our first dance was – you should have seen the look on my mom’s face when it was Jimi Hendrix! But the song is really slow and romantic. It picks up in the middle and returns to the slow song at the end. During the faster part, we had a choreographed fun dance. It was a huge hit! Everyone was clapping and cheering. It really captured our personalities!

A proposal in the snow We got engaged on December 5, 2010. The first weekend of December, Chris also does something special for me to remind me of how much he loves me. I knew that the weekend was coming up, but wondered if he would remember this year. On Saturday, he asked if I wanted to go to the Kentucky Arboretum to walk in the snow. I wanted to go to the Arboretum for a long time, so of course, I went. We drove out there, and walked around and took pictures. Next, he took me out to dinner – which was rare for us because we hardly ever ate out. We were driving back to campus at Asbury University and Chris said he had one more stop. He took me to the place where we had our first kiss – on top of the local elementary school. In the past, he has tried to get me to climb back up there so many times, but I’ve said no in fear of law enforcement. As soon as I opened my month to protest, Chris informed me that he already asked the police and there was nothing to worry about. By this time, I knew something was happening, but I wasn’t sure if we were getting engaged. We walked to the back of the school and it was snowing really hard. Chris stopped, turned around, and began telling me how much I meant to him. I couldn’t believe it was happening! He got down on one knee in the snow and I, of course, said yes. Then we hugged and cried for probably 15 minutes. We had a camera with us and Chris took pictures right before it happened and we took pictures together after it happened. Once we were back in the car, my phone began blowing up. A week or so before the engagement, Chris sent a message to all my friends and family and told them to leave me a voice mail at a certain time congratulating us. It was so special getting voice messages from everyone I love. Next, Chris drove me to our best friend’s house where our friends were waiting for us with champagne! It was a beautiful celebration and I couldn’t have been happier. —Liz

Greatest challenge and greatest thing about being married? Liz: The greatest challenge about being newlyweds for us has been saving money. We want to go out to movies and to dinner, but we just can’t afford it all the time with our budget! So instead, we make dinner and have board game night, or watch a movie at home. The best part of being married is the companionship. It is so wonderful coming home from work and seeing my husband. We have the best time doing everything and I am so blessed to have him in my life. Chris: Everyone said it would be super hard for the first year but it really hasn’t. I have never been happier and am proud of our decision. I love waking up to my best friend everyday. I would suggest people make sure they know the other person well before they get married. Fortunately we knew each other very well so no surprises there!
Advice for engaged couples: Just relax! Don’t worry if everything isn’t perfect or doesn’t go as planned. The point of the day is to marry to the love of your life, and if at the end of the day that was accomplished, you have nothing to worry about! —Liz

jenn & brian Smyrna
THE BRIDE: Jenn Ciccarelli, 30, recently left her career in Corporate Marketing to be a nanny for the most amazing family in Buckhead! THE GROOM: Brian Holcomb, 29, is an Operations Manager for Axcess Worldwide WEDDING DATE: October 8, 2011 The couple had an intimate ceremony at Log Cabin Community Church in Smyrna. The reception was a private chef’s dinner at Woodfire Grill, home to the bride and groom’s favorite chef, Kevin Gillespie.
laughter & love Compiled by Stacey L. Evans | Photography by T.C. Deveau of Deveau Photography wedding theme:
Jenn: The color theme of our wedding was black, white and red. It was actually created with the church’s bright red door in mind and the bride’s love of black and white photography. The Georgia Bulldogs (UGA is the bride’s alma mater) may also have had a small amount of influence, though I’d never admit that during planning! All of the elements of our wedding were recycled or upcycled (invites, place cards, bouquet, etc). In addition, our goal with most of the choices made for our wedding was to buck tradition and really make something that was about us and our personalities. Brian: Our wedding design was simple: A suggested dress code for attending guests in red, grey, white or black. We tried to add little accents to wedding invitations, place cards, etc. that represented the things we like/appreciate.
favorite things:
Jenn: Every part of our wedding was so unique and handpicked that it’s hard to choose a favorite. I think it’s one of our pictures…my best friends (who happen to be married to each other) are having their first baby in spring! Our photographer got a shot of me kneeling down with my head and hand on her belly. When the baby is older some day, I can’t wait to tell her she was at our wedding, since I fully intend to be her favorite aunt. Brian: Aside from my wife? Our dinner was incredible, but the cupcakes at the reception dinner were unforgettable. The Woodfire Grill pasty chef created a chocolate chili cupcake and a white chocolate ganache cupcake instead of a wedding cake for us. Everyone thought the spicy chocolate cupcake was too spicy, but my partner in crime and I thought it was just right.

{ { { n e w l y we d s } } } favorite moments:
Jenn: Instead of a traditional ceremony, our officiant (Ed Wilson of Get Wed by Ed, who is AMAZING) read the poem “I Like You” by Sandol Stoddard Warbug. We laughed through the entire thing, as did our guests. It was so lighthearted and fun, and unique to our personalities. Brian and I are silly, never serious and I’m so glad I was laughing at the altar instead of reciting words that don’t really hold a lot of meaning anymore. Brian: I won’t go into details, but there was a rather large ordeal/mild criminal mischief trying to retrieve our wedding certificate from within the church. Two credit cards were destroyed in the retrieval process.
the dress:
Shopping for wedding dresses when you’re not a girly girl is TOUGH! Everything has bows and flowers and sparkles. None of which appeal to me, AT ALL. My mom and I laughed as I tried on dress after dress that made me look totally ridiculous. My dress ended up being the last one I tried on, from the Vera Wang White collection. Very simple and elegant. No fluff!

rolling in the aisles: Jenn: Brian couldn’t get the ring on my finger!! I laughed and told the audience I’d eaten a lot of chips the day before and my hand was swollen. At one point, I was also feeling a little warm so I hiked up my dress at the altar. A ladylike bride I was not! Brian: My favorite moment was her turning to everyone in the church, dramatically stating how HOT it was in the church and dramatically fanning herself.
how did you feel on your wedding day? Jenn: I had the best time on my wedding day. I confess I had a few mimosas the morning of, and my husband knows me well as there was a bottle of whiskey in my dressing room when we arrived. I was slightly tipsy but the overall mood of the day was one of joy and excitement! Brian: A little nervous, a little relaxed. Hard to describe really. I think the latter of the two feelings came after sharing pre-wedding drinks with our friends.
64 BRIDES 2012
Santa pops the question Jenn: Brian proposed on May 13, 2011. Friday the 13th, actually. The backstory on why this was the most perfect proposal ever: The bride is, without a doubt, Christmas’ biggest fan. Every year around September, I start getting excited about the upcoming holiday season and can hardly wait until Thanksgiving is over to start putting up decorations and planning holiday parties. On Friday, I came home from work and as soon as I walked in the door, I knew something was up. Christmas music was playing and when I walked around the corner into the living room, all of our Christmas decorations, including our tree, were set up. Suddenly, I hear a ‘Ho Ho Ho’ coming down the stairs and Brian shows up in a Santa Suit, holding a tiny wrapped box. He asked me if I would be his Mrs. Claus, to which I immediately responded, YES! He had a dirty martini (my favorite) bar with vodka that we’d fallen in love with on a recent trip to Maine specially ordered. After a few drinks, we headed to dinner at Miller Union to celebrate. Brian: For my wife’s undying love and infatuation with Christmas, I decided to propose with our house decorated with all the Christmas decorations in June. I got the idea when we were driving back from a day road trip to Alabama a few summers ago. There was a radio station in Alabama playing all the standard Christmas songs. I took a Friday off from work to decorate the house in our usual Christmas garb and also rented a Santa suit from Eddie’s Magic Shop in Marietta Square. Jenn immediately knew something was up when she walked in and saw Christmas in June in our house. I yelled, “HO HO HO!” from atop our stairs. She began laughing and said, “You better not be dressed up like Santa!” I came around the corner with a Christmas box in hand, and she laughed uncontrollably for five minutes — even through my awesome proposal, saying I was “ho-ho-hopeful that she would be my Mrs. Claus.” (Side note about proposal: A Santa suit in June isn’t the coolest thing to wear, and I now know why it’s celebrated in December.)

advice for engaged couples: Jenn: Girls, DO NOT STRESS and turn into Bridezilla. There should be no tears or fights or drama. It’s a fun day and an experience that shouldn’t be tainted with all the nonsense I’ve seen when friends have planned their weddings. Our wedding was so fun and stress free. Of course, I also recommend a small wedding to ANYONE. We used our budget to remodel our kitchen, take an awesome trip to Mexico and don’t regret it one bit. It’s just one day and one dress and I couldn’t justify spending that much money on it, but I understand lots of girls have a fairy tale planned out in their head. I would have been just as happy with Brian at the courthouse. Too many people get caught up in all the trimmings and that’s just not what it’s supposed to be about! Brian: Just get out of her way, guys. Be supportive and give your input when asked for it. Also, doing a thing or two for the wedding planning would earn you a Brownie point or two.
11:53 PM
Page 65
the greatest challenge and greatest thing about being married: Jenn: The greatest challenge for me has been the permanence of it all. We agreed, no matter what, to never say the D word. Too many couples quit when it gets tough instead of working, even if it takes months or years, to fix it. The idea of this challenge is a little frightening at first, but we’ve definitely overcome it! The best part about being newlyweds is having a permanent partner in crime! No matter what, we’ll always be with each other – for every adventure, every hardship, every up and down. There’s something really comforting about that. Plus, knowing I NEVER have to date again is a blessing! Brian: I would say that life is a marathon, not a sprint, so if your marriage seems challenging at times, just remember you both have a long way to go. If you’re both serious about your relationship, having patience, and great communication will go a long way.

THE BRIDE: Jennifer, 33, is the Office Manager for Marietta Dental Associate THE GROOM: Jimmy Martin, 33, is a Market Anyalst for Troutman Sanders WEDDING DATE: July 10, 2010 The wedding was held at First Baptist Church Chapel, the bride’s home church and also the same church that the bride’s parents and groom’s parents married in over 30 years ago. The reception was held at 103 West in Buckhead with 46 guests. The ceremony and reception was classic and simple. “We wanted the day to be about our love in the truest sense, so we opted for a very private, intimate family-only ceremony and sit-down lunch reception,” said Jennifer.

the proposal: Jimmy planned a surprise trip to Barnsley
Gardens Sunday, April 11, 2010. He thought of every detail to make the day special. On a gorgeous spring day, overlooking a pond surrounded by gorgeous spring blooms, he began to share his heart and his desire for our life together. He got down on one knee and gave me the most gorgeous ring I had ever laid eyes on. The most beautiful part was he had picked it out himself entirely. After an unforgettable proposal, he had a delicious lunch planned there on the grounds. We spent the perfect afternoon strolling the grounds at which time he presented me with a Bible with my name to be on it. Inside he had inscribed it with a thoughtful message and our engagement date. We also selected and bookmarked a verse that is near and dear to us and we use as our “family scripture.” The afternoon was followed by a fabulous dinner at the stunning Barnsley ruins with a fire set for two.
favorite moments:
Jimmy: The music at our wedding was very near and dear to us. Jennifer came down the aisle as her brother played the guitar and sang “To You Be the Glory” which was very special, I met her as she started down the aisle and we approached the altar together. We also loved when the pastor (Jennifer’s uncle) asked the immediate family to come up and surround the couple as they prayed for blessings on our marriage, it was perfect! Jennifer: Our favorite part of the reception was that everyone was able to sit and enjoy an equisite lunch prepared by 103 West, and with such an intimate crowd, we were able to spend time with every guest. Laughter and love truly filled the venue.

favorite things: Jimmy: Jennifer surprised me with my favorite drink Cheerwine, which is hard to find in Georgia. She had someone make a special trip to North Carolina to bring Cheerwine home in glass bottles as opposed to cans. We toasted with Cheerwine and that was a very special touch she did to think of me. Jennifer: I loved the wreaths that adorned the chapel doors that were made of old hymnals that my mother and grandmother created.

advice for engaged couples: Whether having a large celebration or a small one, try your hardest to not just make it unique with things you have (favors, pictures, etc) but to make it special in the fact that you set aside time during your wedding or reception to truly focus on the covenant you’re entering in. Why Haven't Fibromyalgia Sufferers Been Told These Facts? Do you feel like every drop of energy is drained from your body and most days you just hurt all over? Does going to the bathroom feel like a tenmile hike? Even after numerous tests with your doctor, do they say "we can't find anything wrong?" You are not alone.Six million Americans suffer from the effects of fibromyalgia. But the sad fact is most of them have been told they're crazy, lazy, or just depressed.
Do You Have Any of the Following Symptoms? • Aching all over • Disturbed sleep • Tender points in the neck, spine, shoulders and hips • Recurring headaches • Fatigue & Stiffness
You've Been Everywhere, Tried Everything, And You're Still Suffering Maybe your doctor doesn't even think fibromyalgia is a real disease, but you know it is.You suffer with it every day. One fibromyalgia patient said it like this…"I am so tired of the guilt of not being able to keep my house the way I like or fix dinner for my husband all the time. With the girls and the meds and pain I can barely just get that done, let alone clean and cook dinner most days." Another said…"For people who take good health for granted, it's hard to imagine a condition that makes simple tasks great tests of will and determination." Fibromyalgia is often called the invisible disease. You look fine on the surface, but underneath you're often exhausted and in excruciating pain. My name is Dr. Amy Valente. Over the past several years I've used gentle treatments to help hundreds of fibromyalgia patients feel better and live healthier, more joyful lives. The more patients I helped get better, the more I realized that…
No Woman Should Have To Suffer The Way You Do. I've made it my mission in practice to help those suffering with chronic pain like you. Because of this, I'm running a special offer for women suffering from fibromyalgia.
For 16 days only, $20 will get you all the services I normally charge new patients $250 for! What does this offer include? • An in-depth consultation about your health and well-being where I will listen… really listen…to the details of your case. • A complete neuromuscular examination. • A full set of specialized x-rays to determine if a spinal problem is contributing to your pain or symptoms (NOTE: These would normally cost you at least $100). • A thorough analysis of your exam and x-ray findings so we can start mapping out your plan to being pain-free. I'll provide answers to all your most probing questions about fibromyalgia like… • the best nutritional supplements proven to help with fibromyalgia. • which position, mattress, and pillow you should use for a good night's rest. • the foods that can help you and which ones can make you worse. • how to exercise the right way so you aren't making your pain worse. The offer is only good until February 25th. The appointment will not take long at all. And you won't be sitting in a waiting room all day either.
For Many Women,There Is Hope. You Just Need The Right Plan. • Imagine how great you could feel without your constant fatigue and nagging pains. • Imagine waking up each morning, jumping out of bed, and enjoying the day… no more waking up and feeling like you got hit by a truck. • Imagine not having to take handfuls of pain pills that haven't helped and can have side effects. • Imagine what it would be like to finally have hope again. To give you an example of how you can be helped just listen to what someone else has to say about it: Before coming in to NLCC I had been diagnosed with fibromyalgia and was in daily pain suffering from tingling and numbness in my arms and legs. Since starting care my symptoms have lessened and my pain has decreased. I can now enjoy my life again and go about my daily activities without being in terrible pain. There is a big difference between pain and symptoms and correcting the source of the problem.NLCC has helped heal me! – Thank you, T. Schrews I had been suffering with fibromyalgia for 4 years and had been treated by drugs which were not helping. What to do before meeting your florist:
76 BRIDES 2012
Look through wedding magazines and browse online to get an idea of what you like. Being prepared for the consultation will help you accomplish more, said Mike Whittle of K. Mike Whittle Designs. Set your budget. Flowers need to be planned last because they have to coordinate with the colors, dress, ambiance and size of the venue, but make sure you save room in the budget. Often a couple’s budget has dwindled by the time they meet with a florist. “Now they want to decorate and don’t have the money. When you get to a blank slate like a hotel and you don’t have any decor it looks like a blank room,” said Mike Whittle Nikki Parker, Design Manager at Carithers. Many brides come in with ideas copied from celebrity weddings, and don’t realize the cost of extravagant flowers. “Do not look at celebrity weddings and come in with a $500 budget. Be realistic,” said Parker. However, you don’t have to give up on your dream. It’s possible to create a similar look using less expensive flowers.

“When you walk into a ceremony, people remember the flowers and the dress. It’s the first thing they see.” — Michael Reader, AFID certified florist at Carithers
Tips:
Be open to suggestions, change and be willing to adapt. Listen to your florist. “You have to be willing to compromise,” said Michael Reader, AFID certified florist at Carithers Flowers. When choosing flowers, consider the bride’s dress and colors but what matters most is the flowers fit her personality, said Whittle. Don’t try to match the color of your flowers to your wedding colors, make it contrast and complement. That will stand out more. It’s good to make people think they are going to two events, said Whittle. Make the reception totally different from the wedding. Go in reception with lots of color and lots of bang,
The intensity of color and trumpet-shaped bloom of mango calla lilies will spice up any bouquet. The flowers are elegant and playful, and combined with white tulips, white amaryllis and brown hypericum berries makes a unique arrangement. Great for Autumn weddings or to match accents of the wedding dress. Carithers Flowers 1708 Powers Ferry Road, Marietta 770.998.3000, www.carithers.com
Trends:
In 2011, purple was hot and Parker believes it will still play big in 2012, in addition to cornflower blue and burgundy. Lavender and plums are also hot contenders. “Brides are more drawn to color, more nontraditional than the blush colors in the past. Most want a dominant color,” Parker said. Adding “bling” to flowers, especially to match the dress, is Michael Reader, AFID a trend that really catches the certified deisgner at eye. Carithers Flowers King said other trends are hand-tied bouquets in which the stems are exposed, and black and white arrangements accented with hot pink or red. On a budget? Since flowers can be shipped from around the world, there’s no need to worry about what’s seasonal. But Nikki Parker, Design Manager at Carithers, advises brides on a budget to choose flowers they see everyday, which are generally less expensive. She also said those on a budget should choose flowers with larger blooms, to make a fuller bouquet with less flowers. Hydrangeas are economically priced and have a six-inch diameter. By comparison, it would take 15 roses to fill the same space, she said.

With all the planning that goes into the wedding, planning a honeymoon might seem like a simple endeavor. Just a few clicks on the internet—book flight, book resort and done. But just like having a wedding planner can ensure your day goes as planned, having an experienced travel agent to guide you through planning your honeymoon can make certain you spend your time sipping martinis overlooking a crystal blue sea rather than wondering how to get away from the noisy, smelly, boring resort that looked good in the photos online. “With a travel agent, you get knowledge and personal experience,” said Trudie Robinson of All Travel in Marietta. Robinson, who’s been in the business for over 30 years, and business partner June Cuba, who’s been an agent for over 25 years,
travel every few months to many of the destinations they book for clients. “You can look on the internet, but won’t know what’s been renovated,” said Robinson. “We go see where the good and the bad is. We can tell [clients] about things they probably wouldn’t know about. We can find more intimate and quaint places. We want to make sure clients know what they are getting.” Another perk to using a travel agent is they can usually bargain a free upgrade, and they can help with special arrangements, like having a bottle of wine or flowers in the room or a candlelight dinner on the beach. And probably one of the best benefits is having someone who can handle it for you if everything isn’t up to par. “I can be the bully,” said Robinson. She said clients can call her if there are any problems

Sometimes planning a honeymoon is an effort in compromise, as the bride and groom may have different ideas on what the vacation should be. An experienced travel agent can arrange a trip that will please both the beach bum types as well as adventurers. “Sometimes we act as counselors,” Robinson said about getting the bride and groom to see eye to eye on travel plans. “I want to make sure they get what they want out of the vacation.” All Travel specializes in honeymoons, but can help with accommodations for any type of travel. BY HEATHER TEILHET
I was overwhelmed with the details of planning a wedding.
My mom and I spent months shopping for the perfect dress, cutting out magazine clippings of beautiful flower bouquets, visiting reception locations, tasting cakes and crunching numbers. Rob and I chose our wedding rings, registered for china, listened to countless wedding band CDs and planned every minute of the ceremony that incorporated the people and scriptures we loved. No detail was left to chance. I still have no idea how much money, or how many hours were spent planning that day. At the time it didn’t seem unusual, but in hindsight (and following seven years of real-life-marriage experience) I’m shocked at the preparation and expense that went into making one day, one 24-hour period, special for Rob and I, our guests, friends and family. The morning of our big day, it poured like a monsoon. My nerves caused a red splotchy rash all over my chest and neck. We panicked because the flower arrangements were a few minutes late. The zipper on one of my bridesmaids’ dress broke, so standing in the narthex of the church as the wedding procession started, we sewed her back into her dress as she headed down the aisle. But none of those glitches mattered. Despite hot flashes and nervous butterflies, deep inside I knew that even if the 10 months of planning came entirely unraveled, I was still more certain than I’d ever been, about any decision. Red hives or not, today I was going to marry the best man I’d ever known. And like icing on the cake, everyone I cherished in my life was right there, in one room, to support my decision. But sadly, even our best days last only as long as the rest, and in 24 hours, it was over. The food was gone, the flowers were wilting, and my beautiful dress was hanging in a closet. While they were masterful at creating a beautiful wedding day, all the caterers, florists Eight years later: The and seamstresses didn’t do a thing to prepare ly, from left, Maddie, me for the reality of marriage once the honeymoon ended, or the 70 years (hopefully) that and Harper. will follow. It took me years to realize it, but I think the most valuable part of my wedding preparation was free, and almost entirely overlooked in the sea of pearls and hydrangeas. It was the advice we got from our beloved preacher and lifelong friend, Mike Selleck, who performed our wedding ceremony. Mike’s wise counsel began early in our engagement over coffee at the Waffle House, and continued right up to the delivery of our vows. Seven years later, watching our wedding video, it’s almost like Mike was peering into our future with the secrets we’d need to maintain a healthy relationship. Mike gave us four directives, although he called it “food for thought, and hard-won wisdom.” Frankly, in the frenzy of wedding planning, decisions and budgets, Mike’s missives seemed simple enough. But little did
Page 82
I know, life only gets more complicated, not less so, and over the years Mike’s simple instructions would be easy to forget in the shuffle of real life. First, Mike told us, find a way to say ‘I love you’ every day. He said the words themselves weren’t the important part, but to focus on the nuance behind the often-used phrase. He said a marriage is one of the things in life you assume is fine, without investing much time or effort to ensuring it actually is. After the honeymoon ends and real life begins, other things rise on the priority list, like work, a project, a goal or a person, leaving you or your spouse wondering where you stand with each other. Every day, try to say the words ‘I love you,’ or, in other words, ‘You are still the top of my list.’ Say it with intention, every single day, he said. Secondly, Mike said words weren’t enough. He instructed us to find time to show love, at least once, every day. One demonstration of love every day might take the form of a bouquet of flowers or a selfless act. Look for opportunities where your spouse feels taken for granted, he instructed. If he had a rough day, take out the trash for him, instead of waiting for him to do it. If she worked a double shift, force her to sit down for a good, long foot rub. Find one demonstration, every day, to demonstrate that your spouse isn’t taken for granted. Mike’s third rule had to do with greeting each other at home. He said every day, you both come and go, and every night, you return to your spouse. There is at least one greeting for each other, every day. Mike told us that the way we greet our spouse in our home is important. The Bible says a home should be a haven of peace, a place of safety, a sanctuary. We have the opportunity to reestablish that sanctuary every day with our greeting. Mike said every day, we should give each other 30 minutes of amnesty, or peace, before launching into a marital complaint. This is harder than it sounds, but work at it. Thirty minutes of peace and a warm greeting every day. No matter what. Lastly, Mike told us to settle our differences early. Don’t sleep on anger. We say things when we’re tired that we don’t mean, or we say things that we do mean, but wouldn’t normally say. Once it’s been said, you can never take it back. So settle your differences early, he instructed. Wake up to a sanctuary, not a battleTeilhet fami- field. As a glowing (frenzied) bride-toHeather, Rob be, I spent a heck of a lot more time planning our wedding than I did preparing for the maintenance of my healthy marriage. But I now know that my memory of my wedding day grows more vague every year, but my reliance on my best friend, partner and spouse grows exponentially as life gets more complicated. I’m no expert on wedding planning, and I’m definitely no expert on preserving a happy marriage. But if the current me had been around to offer the younger me a few words of wisdom, I’d suggest investing a little more thought and effort into the life-ever-after part. Because 24 hours will slip away in the blink of an eye. But a lifelong partnership will withstand hot flashes, butterflies and monsoons, if no details are left to chance.
