{cakes} cookies, cheesecakes and tarts. It’s nice because not everyone likes the same thing. And because the portions are smaller, they can try more than one flavor without eating too much,” Doyle said. Doyle said many brides also provide their own cake plates and stands for the desserts, especially if they have sentimental value. But that’s about as far as tradition goes when it comes to wedding desserts. “Our most popular flavor right now for cakes is the Guinness and chocolate-flavored cake with cream cheese and salted caramel, but that may be because it’s what won on ‘Cake Hunters,’” Doyle said, referring to her and her team’s big win in June 2016 on the Cooking Channel’s popular show. The wedding cake was catered to fit the bride’s glitzy taste in décor and the groom’s desire for an infusion of masculinity and even featured a secret compartment containing beer cans ready for drinking. The episode, “Tiers of Beers,” can still be viewed on cookingchanneltv.com. This was not Miss Mamie’s first brush with fame, however, as she won Food Network’s “Cupcake Wars” show in 2012. The craziest cake so far, though? “We made a cake in the shape and look of the Stanley Cup trophy that stood up and it was definitely challenging,” Doyle said with a laugh. “Today, there is so much engineering that goes into making cakes because people have more and more creative requests. You can be great at decorating a cake, but you have to make sure it holds up.”

Lindy & Josh Lindy and Josh Kell were married May 22, 2016 at Litter River Farms in Milton. The couple resides in Canton. written by Stacey L. Evans photography by Blush Magnolia Photography

t was a little bit rock n’ roll, a little bit comedy show, and a lot more Elvis than expected. But first, it was two kindred souls forming a friendship that later blossomed into love. Lyndy and Josh met at his family’s restaurant, Downtown Kitchen, where he was working as a bartender. Lyndy frequented the popular Canton restaurant with her friends and the two eventually struck up a conversation. Years later, after becoming close friends, Josh asked Lyndy out.

“I loved her free spirit. She is gorgeous, loving, a sweetheart and a ton of fun. When we are together — it’s just great.” There wasn’t any one particular moment when Lyndy knew he was “the one,” she said. Like their friendship, the love just deepened over time. “We just grew to love one another and discovered

we didn’t want to be without one another,” she said. “I found that I was always happy when I was with him. He has a great sense of humor and go-with-the-flow personality. He is also amazing with my daughter; he has easily taken her as his own, and has shown her nothing but love and what a good man should be.” Their proposal story will make any romantic heart melt. It started with a concert by one of the Canton couple’s favorite bands, JJ Grey & Mofro, at the Buckhead Theatre in Atlanta. They booked a nearby hotel to stay after the show. When the couple arrived to check in, the concierge handed Lyndy an envelope and a single red rose. “In the elevator I nervously opened the envelope and began to read,” she said. Printed on the note inside were part of the lyrics to the Elvis hit “Can’t Help Falling in Love.” The last verse read: Like a river flows To the sea So it goes Some things are meant to be Take my hand Take my whole life too For I can’t help falling in love with you

In the hotel room was another surprise: rose petals scattered everywhere, a bottle of champagne on ice, and “Can’t Help Falling in Love” playing in the background. “Josh starts telling me how much my daughter and I mean to him, then gets down on one knee,” Lyndy said. But before he can even ask the question, she responds with an enthusiastic “yes!” “It turns out he had been planning this proposal with the hotel concierge for a month,” she said. The two tied the knot with 160 guests about a year later at Little River Farms in Milton. Their rustic-themed wedding also had elements that illustrated the couple’s love of music — guests

signed albums instead of typical guestbooks — and many personal touches from family and friends. “I really just wanted everything to feel comfortable,” Lyndy said. “I wanted everyone to feel like we were coming together as a big family to enjoy great food and music.” A close friend officiated the ceremony and an uncle designed the flower arrangements. And Elvis showed up —five of him, in fact. Several of Josh’s family members dressed as Elvis impersonators for the reception. A fitting convoy for the first dance, which was, of course, to “Can’t Help Falling in Love.”

Q&A Favorite thing about the ceremony? Lyndy: The mess-ups that happened. We dropped the rings. And then we had a wine ceremony — we were supposed to seal letters to each other along with a bottle of wine into a box to open on our anniversary. We needed just a small nail, but someone put a railroad spike on the table instead. We just looked at each other and laughed and had to pretend to seal the box. What was your favorite moment during the reception? Lyndy: There are too many to pick one. I loved the first dance between Josh and my daughter, Ariana. Also, my little brother is in a wheelchair and my father-in-law brought him out to the dance floor and danced with him for quite a while. The band, Az Izz, even came down and sang to him, which he loved. It was a great reminder that not only am I lucky to marry Josh, but I also married into an amazing, loving family. Josh: My cousins and uncle surprised us by

dressing up in Elvis costumes. It was hilarious. Also, our grand entrance to the reception was pretty awesome. (The bridal party wore Elvis sunglasses and everyone danced in when announced.) And it was the first time we were announced as husband and wife. What is the best thing about being married? Getting to wake up every day next to our best friend (cheesy, we know). Also, knowing that we are committed to work through anything that comes our way as partners. What is the biggest challenge? We both have busy schedules, so finding time together can be difficult. (Josh’s family owns four restaurants: Downtown Kitchen, Goin’ Coastal in Canton and Goin’ Coastal in Virginia Highlands and the soon-to-be-opened Queenie’s in downtown Canton. Lyndy runs an Etsy shop from home, LyndyLou Designs.) Do you have advice for couples planning a wedding? We wish we would have had someone record our ceremony. Also, be honest about what you want your wedding to be.

ubbles are a must at all nuptials. The celebratory pop of the sparkling wine corks signal the best man or woman to offer a toast to the happy couple. Please offer wines which are clean, refreshing and delightful to drink, keeping in mind that they should also be food friendly, therefore sweet sparklers such as Asti Spumante should be avoided. Wines labeled Brut or Extra Dry will be delicious on their own, with hors d’oeuvres at the reception, and with the meal. Serve sweeter sparklers with the wedding cake. A user friendly white and red wine can be offered which will compliment a wide range of food options. Of course each wedding is different and the caterer or wedding planner can suggest three wines to consider. Be sure to offer varietals that have consumer recognition. You can select a white and red which you prefer. Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc for the white and Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot or Pinot Noir for the red. Ask to have a tasting with a selection of wines when your food menu is being created. Remember, if you like it, serve it. Ask if you can purchase your wines retail. Some caterers will allow that, however they will usually charge a per bottle corkage fee for preparation and service. The following wines are my go to selections when I am consulting with wedding planners. They are available in the market and offer great value.

Sparkling Wine Iron Horse Vineyards, Wedding Cuvee Green Valley, Russian River, California (shown on previous page) Michelle Brut, Domaine Ste. Michelle Columbia Valley, Washington Avissi Prosecco Veneto, Italy

White Wines Columbia Crest, Horse Heaven Hills, Chardonnay Columbia Valley, Washington Danzante, Pinot Grigio Italy Joel Gott, Sauvignon Blanc California

Brides can expect unique and varied place settings with Vintage English Teacup, owned and curated by Vanessa Gilbreath.

arietta’s Vanessa Gilbreath, has an infectious, sunny disposition — always laughing and sending smiley face emojis — that inevitably make her healthy dose of perspective go down smoothly like the perfect wedding reception cocktail. “Planners are frazzled because they’re trying to corral these brides. The brides are thinking that this is the most important thing that’s ever happened on planet Earth ever,” Gilbreath said. “And you’re like, ‘Darling, they’re just plates. It’ll be fine.’ ” The mere plates she oh-so-casually references are the 700 pieces of vintage English china she rents out for weddings, corporate events, bridal showers and more as owner of Vintage English Teacup, established in 2012. Playing a major role in the wedding of someone’s dreams was never on Gilbreath’s radar. A native of Clandon, a village south of London, she earned a degree in childcare and worked as a nanny and in sales before meeting her husband, David, an American teaching in London at the time. They moved to the states in 1985, where she continued in sales and as a nanny, working part-time once their children were born. The proverbial lightbulb went off in 2011 during an event of epic proportion (no, not the “Game of Thrones” premiere): the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. Gilbreath told her neighbors she’d be watching the grand affair starting at 3 a.m. and that they could drop in and enjoy a cup of tea. She thought no one would show. “The entire street was full of people. Everybody came, everybody wore a hat. We were making tea constantly for 15 hours. It was crazy,” Gilbreath said. While indulging in tea and biscuits, guests lamented about the rarity of it all. “Everyone kept saying, ‘We don’t do this anymore. Why don’t we do this?’ Gilbreath said. “And I was like, ‘Well, why don’t we?’” Gilbreath began researching and discovered several vintage rental companies carrying “thrift store cheap china,” but, much to her dismay, none imported from England. Bolstered, she skipped across the pond and camped out at a few auctions, scoring about 100 place settings. “But then, I realized weddings in America are easily 150 to 200 people so we sort of expanded in that direction,” Gilbreath said. She slowly built her inventory, making multiple trips across the Atlantic as special requests, like all blue place settings, filtered in. Her brother, Tim, who resides in England, keeps her posted on upcoming auctions. She also makes monthly visits to Scott Antique Market in Atlanta. Gilbreath can meet just about any demand as long as she has enough notice — England’s ample supply of fine china makes it easy.

“English weddings typically use mismatched vintage fine china. It’s a historic thing, because we have so much beautiful china manufactured in our country. I love Minton, Aynsley, Wedgwood, Royal Doulton and Spode, in particular,” Gilbreath said. Gilbreath runs Vintage English Teacup from her home, displaying her china in vendor showrooms to attract and court brides, contracting event help when needed and storing the china in foam coolers on warehouse shelves in her garage. Gilbreath said her clientele is a mashup of the young and seasoned. Sometimes she is outfitting a younger couple’s wedding or the second for older clients. “It’s a high-end product. It’s not budget-friendly, so it does tend to be career professionals with degrees,” Gilbreath said. Micah Walsh, a self-professed Anglophile, hired Gilbreath for her 2013 wedding at Marietta’s Whitlock Inn. “We had a brunch wedding and I was going for a vintage garden party feel to the day overall,” Walsh said. She and Gilbreath instantly hit it off. “Choosing the vintage china was, in retrospect, one of the best decisions I made in terms of executing my overall vision for my wedding day. One of the more surprising results was that the guests really enjoyed looking at their place setting and comparing it to the ones of the other guests. It became a unique conversation point at the reception,” Walsh said. Just like brides and grooms, for Gilbreath the real work begins after the wedding. “All the china has to be washed by hand because it has gold and is hand-painted. So I get to stand at my kitchen sink for days after a big wedding and wash and dry and repack everything, so that part is a challenge,” Gilbreath said. Five years in, Gilbreath can appreciate how far she’s come, considering she had zero experience in event planning. It was the backing of local vendors that got her through that experimental first year she spent “screwing up and not knowing what I was doing.” “Without the help and support of planners and venue owners and what have you in Atlanta, I would’ve sunk like a stone,” Gilbreath said. Of course, there were and are those who consider her competition, but her overall experience has been surprisingly positive, she said. Now, she mentors a handful of other “china ladies” in the Southeast, supporting them in their endeavors. “You never know who’s going to be successful and it doesn’t hurt to help everybody. It doesn’t affect business at all,” Gilbreath said.

great love songs for the modern wedding By Solvej Schou

“At laaaaaaast, my looooove has come along,” Etta James sings with a gutsy, bluesy drawl at the beginning of her 1960 version of the 1940s tune. With just those seven heart-swelling words, James secured a spot on wedding playlists for decades. Today, with many couples financing their own weddings, personalized playlists run the gamut, from music played during the ceremony to a first dance song, said Jill Sieracki, senior features editor of Brides magazine. Open, non-gender-specific love songs also appeal to contemporary couples. “Who says you have to walk down the aisle to ‘Here Comes the Bride’?” she said. Tastes change with the times, and so do popular wedding songs (the Baroque classic Pachelbel’s Canon has shown real staying power). Keeping many choices in mind, here are five songs that seem to speak to modern lovebirds, from John Legend’s hit 2013 piano ballad “All of Me” and Ed Sheeran’s 2014 standout “Thinking Out Loud” to James’ evergreen staple. JOHN LEGEND — “ALL OF ME” Singing “‘Cause all of me/ Loves all of you/ Love your curves and all your edges/ All your perfect imperfections,” Grammy-winning R&B artist Legend doesn’t just channel his love for his wife (and model) Chrissy Teigen, he proclaims it. After analyzing more than 400,000 wedding-themed playlists worldwide, Spotify in 2015 named the song the top choice for tying the knot. “I love the lyric ‘your perfect imperfections,’” said Sieracki. “It’s a common theme with these songs that they have these great lyrics, about appreciating the person for who they are. I don’t think there’s anyone on the planet who doesn’t want to be the John Legend-Chrissy Teigen love story. They’re so fantastic.” Doug Farra, who owns Wedding DJ Plus in Las Vegas, has deejayed more than 200 weddings over the past six years. He said “All of Me” is fading in popularity but is still a good choice. “Even if you’re not that couple that’s taking ballroom dance lessons, this is easy to dance to,” said Sieracki. “Everyone’s watching you, and you want to look good for your first dance. You want it to be sweet and loving.” ED SHEERAN — “THINKING OUT LOUD” Speaking of ballroom dancing, British singer-songwriter Sheeran made a splash when his video for 2014’s “Thinking Out Loud” debuted, featuring him sashaying with “So You Think You Can Dance” contestant Brittany Cherry, who was clad in a white dress. “And, darling, I will be loving you ‘til we’re 70/ And, baby, my heart could still fall as hard at 23,” Sheeran croons, later belting, “Kiss me under the light of a thousand stars.”

28

The mid-tempo guitar- and piano-fueled song, which won two Grammys, including 2015 song of the year, is a favorite wedding tune for Brides magazine readers. “We’ve seen that song explode in popularity, and it ticks all the boxes for everyone. It’s so fun,” said Sieracki. “A lot of these newer songs, too, they’re not gender-specific. They’re very open to all couples, whether it’s two grooms or two brides. It’s a love story.” ADELE — “MAKE YOU FEEL MY LOVE” Backed by a steady piano melody, mega-hit-maker Adele’s 2008 cover of Bob Dylan’s 1997 song “Make You Feel My Love” doesn’t just ooze melancholy romance; it showcases her instantly recognizable soulful voice. The song was on her first studio album, “19.” “When the rain is blowing in your face/ And the whole world is on your case/ I could offer you a warm embrace/ To make you feel my love,” Adele sings at the beginning, filling each note with a raspy warmth. Sieracki and her husband chose the song for their own wedding five years ago. “With that first note, everybody knows that’s Adele,” she said. “There were things in the lyrics that resonated with me and my husband, with our own story. My husband and I were in our mid- to late 30s when we got married.” LONESTAR — “AMAZED” With lyrics such as, “I wanna spend the rest of my life/ With you by my side,” Lonestar’s 1999 twangy power ballad “Amazed” has become a favorite for country music lovers, said Sieracki. Oodles of videos on YouTube show couples doing their first dance to the tune. “There are a lot of people that look to country music for their wedding songs,” she said. “This song is a love story, a lyrical piece that really works for all types of couples.” Farra also recommends singer-songwriter Jack Johnson’s mellow acoustic ode “Better Together” for cake-cutting or a processional. “It has an upbeat feel to it,” he said. “The lyrics are about being better with that other person.” ETTA JAMES — “AT LAST” With its sweeping violin melody and James pouring her heart out, “At Last” has a timeless quality. Short and direct, its poetic lyrics muse about finding and keeping love. “My heart was wrapped up in clover/ The night I looked at you,” James intones. “There’s something that holds true with the lyrics in 2016, 2017,” said Sieracki. “It doesn’t matter what the couple looks like, their ages. At your 50th anniversary, this is the song you’re going to want to dance to again.”

A few other popular modern options: “Marry You” (2010) by Bruno Mars “A Thousand Years” (2011) by Christina Perri “Ho Hey” (2012) by The Lumineers “You Are the Best Thing” (2008) by Ray LaMontagne “I Won’t Give Up” (2012) and “I’m Yours” (2008) by Jason Mraz

Couture new age

Personality at height of bridal fashion for 2017

B

ridal trends are a lot like home decor. Sure, traditional styles are still available in some stores, but contemporary and transitional furnishings are where it’s at for 2017. This is a movement that has been percolating just under the surface for some time now, and it crosses over into other style-centric industries. After all, what modern woman wants her kitchen mucked up with hunter green and burgundy wallpaper, when she could have cadet grey paint with a white subway tile backsplash? And, so it goes for bridal fashion. Sure, most stores still stock the classic heavily-layered white ballgown or body con mermaid-style fit and flair, but (if there’s one bridal trend to rule them all for 2017) traditional norms have been tossed out that old kitchen window in lieu of transitional and contemporary looks for the modern woman. Today, brides-to-be aren’t expected to conform to conventional nuptial ideals and instead are encouraged to let their authentic and beautiful selves shine through.

As ever more brides connect with this new and genuine personalized standard for their big day, ever more innovative wedding dress styles also become available. Some simply are elevated classics boasting embellishments with a bit of flair, while others play on cutting-edge color combinations. Still others experiment with fit and cut, while some use popular trends in fabric to make bold statements. Bridal jewelry has followed suit. Some of our favorite 2017 bridal trends gracing the runways this season are 3D floral and bow embellishments, racer and halter backs, daring plunge necklines, off-theshoulder and long sleeve looks, high-lows and tiered skirts, pants, boudoir lace and (you guessed it) more color than you can shake a stick at, including metallic, blush and a plethora of other Pantone-inspired hues. We’ve paired our faves with a bit of sparkle courtesy of Cumberland Diamond Exchange (CDE), and one thing’s for sure — no matter which of this season’s fashion-forward looks strike your fancy, you’re sure to find something uniquely you!

One of the hottest new fabrics for spring 2017 is boudoir lace (a lace overlay in a contrasting color to the fabric underneath). This Maggie Sottero lace and Santorini chiffon A-line dress (style Diedre Marie shown in ivory over nude Inessa jersey lining) is a great example of just how alluring boudoir lace can be even when offering the full coverage of long sleeves and a bateau neckline. CDE paired this subtly sexy look with an 18K white gold round halo engagement ring ($3,320*) and 18K white gold waterfall drop earrings ($2,830). Maggie Sottero gowns all are priced under $2,500 and are available at Bravura, CTO Bridal and A Formal Occasion.

Another take on the boudoir lace trend, this crocheted lace A-line Lillian West gown (style 6468 in ivory/nude; about $1,500-$1,999) with chapel train ups the fashion ante with its super chic racer back and geometric patterning. Racer and halter backs are all the rage this season, and they aren’t just for outdoor or destination weddings. The team at CDE added a bit of accessorized va-va-voom to the gown with an 18K white gold round halo engagement ring ($1,825*), 18K white gold Allure drop earrings ($4,885) and 18K white gold Allure fashion necklace ($3,915). Lillian West gowns are available at Adore: A Bridal Boutique.

Tiered skirts come in all varieties, and this sleeveless Sophia Tolli misty tulle ballgown plays on convention with a bit of asymmetry, a chapel train and a high illusion jewel neckline with plunging V. The hand-beaded lace appliqués also come in both pewter and black for the more daring bride who wants a pop of color on her big day. The formal feeling of this dress lends itself to some serious (yet subtle) frenzy, so the pros at CDE paired it with an 18K white gold round halo engagement ring ($6,070*), 14K white gold Demure bangle bracelet ($2,320) and 18K white gold waterfall drop earrings ($4,575). Sophia Tolli gowns are available at Bravura and Encore. This dress (style Dolce Vita) retails between $1,300 and $2,000.

There’s just something about daring to bare a bit of décolletage that makes this otherwise quite modest Duchess A-line gown by Casablanca Bridal (style Viola; about $1,000$1,499) super sophisticated and graceful a la Audrey Hepburn. The neckline plunges to the waist but features an illusion panel, so there’s no need to worry about any wardrobe malfunctions. The back also features V illusion and beading. This is one look where you’ll definitely want to make a statement, so the pros at CDE complimented this sleek gown with a 14K white gold road solitaire two-tone engagement ring ($690*), 18K white gold Kaslique bangle statement bracelet ($10,420) and 18K white gold Kaslique drop earrings ($4,655). Casablanca gowns are available at Bravura, Encore and A Formal Occasion.

Although some tiered skirts (like the Amare Couture gown) are flowy, flouncy and fun, others find their pleasure in a more form-fitting style. This white Chantilly lace off-the-shoulder beauty by Theia Couture (style Erin) is a perfect example of a classic whimsical romantic look made du jour for the modern bride. It’s also one of those dresses you have to try on to fully appreciate. Even romantics need a bit of ice, so the CDE team paired this look with an 18K white gold Marquise three-stone engagement ring ($10,175*), 14K white gold Grace peekaboo earrings ($725) and 14K white gold Grace fashion right-hand ring ($680). Theia gowns are priced below $2,500 and are available online at theiacouture.com with free shipping and returns.

Ohh la la. C’est magnifique. There’s just something about this plunging illusion neckline that screams haute fashion and Parisian shopping. Sottero & Midgley’s Dione organza ballgown (style Amelié in champagne) with lightweight horsehair (a type of netting) layered skirt and Swarovski crystal and pearl embellished bodice looks like it just stepped off the runway, and you’ll certainly feel like a million bucks when you wear it on your big day. Such a stunning gown deserves some equally jaw-dropping jewelry, so the CDE team added an 18K white gold halo engagement ring ($2,410*) and statement 18K white gold waterfall drop earrings ($5,435) that simply call for an updo. Sottero & Midgley gowns are priced between $1,100 and $4,000 and are available at Bravura, CTO Bridal and A Formal Occasion.

It may be a ballgown, but this Maggie Sottero (style Bianca) Shavon organza dress with a strapless scoop neck and handmade rosettes with pearl detailing is anything but dated. Perfect for the lady who grew up wanting to be a 21st century Cinderella, this 3D floral style is light, comfortable and sure to make you feel like the belle of the ball. When you wear a statement gown like this one, you want your jewelry to compliment not compete. CDE selected a Lyla 14K pink gold round halo engagement ring ($1,715*), 18K white and pink gold Allure fashion necklace ($3,055) and 14K white gold clustered diamond stud earrings ($1,010) to complete the look. Maggie Sottero gowns all are priced under $2,500 and are available at Bravura, CTO Bridal and A Formal Occasion.

This two piece racer back gown by Amare Couture by Casablanca (style Isabella; about $1,500$1,999) kicks it up a notch with the addition of a keyhole back with lace illusion jewel neckline and tiered organza skirt. Talk about ticking a lot of trendy boxes without going overboard! The understated, yet contemporary, style of this dress calls for a matching style in jewelry, and the pros at CDE did not disappoint. They paired it with a 14K white gold vintage style round halo engagement ring ($1,475*), 14K white gold Demure bangle bracelet and a stunning pair of 14K white gold clustered diamond stud earrings ($1,010). Walk into most bridal boutiques today, and you’re likely to see some color. This metallic Sophia Tolli gown (style Emeline) in alabaster and pewter is a great example of adding a bit of color without jumping in the paint pool with both feet. It’s a lovely strapless organza ballgown with a plunging sweetheart neckline concealed by peekaboo lace. The dress is completed with hand-beaded lace appliqués, back corset and a chapel train and also comes in an alabaster and black version. When your gown rocks the bling, you may want to keep jewelry simple yet elegant. CDE paired this look with a Sadie 14K white gold round straight engagement ring ($775*), 14K white gold Grace drop pearl earrings ($520) and 14K white gold Grace pearl fashion necklace ($560). Sophia Tolli gowns are available at Bravura and Encore and range from about $1,300-$2,000.

You can’t tell simply by looking, but this splendid Justin Alexander (style 8888) illusion lace bodice with deep V neckline and tiered ruffle skirt with horsehair trim are actually separates, making this lovely style as easy to wear as it is to look at. We’re showing the gown in sand/ivory and nude, which plays to this season’s love affair with blush tones, but it is available in other color combinations. To stay with the blush theme, CDE paired this stunner with Lyla 14K pink gold round halo engagement ring ($1,715*), 14K pink gold stackable bangle bracelet ($5,840) and 14K white gold clustered diamond stud earrings ($1,450). The bouquet pictured here is by Broach Bouquets by Mayra. Justin Alexander gowns are available at Adore and CTO Bridal, and this dress retails between $1,500 and $1,999.

Party in the front and business in the back, this sleek high-low style sleeveless Mikado A-line gown by Enchanting by Mon Cheri (style 215101) boasts a modest scoop neck with an almost architectural V and cool structural double X back softened with the addition of a feminine bow. Not only is this dress both comfortable and adorable, the side pockets are perfect for storing some lip gloss and the sweep train in back is the ideal length to shake your groove thing at the reception. With such a formidable gown, it’s cool to have some fun with your jewelry, and CDE did not disappoint with a 14K white gold round three-stone halo engagement ring with sapphires ($3,650*), 14K white gold Demure bangle ($2,320) and 18K white gold waterfall peekaboo sapphire and diamond earrings ($5,805). Last year, we featured a well-tailored pant suit and touted the loveliness of the trend toward separates. This year, separates are still all the rage but pants are also here to stay. This strapless, wide-leg chiffon jumpsuit with semi sweetheart neckline, hand-beaded bodice and wrap belt by Enchanting by Mon Cheri (style 215103) is perhaps the most comfortable wedding attire we’ve ever shown yet still manages to pull all eyes to the bride. Such a subtle look deserves a little bling, so the CDE team dressed it up with an Aurora 14K white gold round halo engagement ring ($2,925*), 18K white gold waterfall diamond choker featuring asymmetric diamond cascades ($12,320) and 18K white gold waterfall drop earrings ($4,575). The bouquet is by Broach Bouquets by Mayra and adds even more sparkle to the look’s muted elegance. Enchanting by Mon Cheri dresses all are priced between $550 and $999 and are available at Bravura and Encore.

FROM THE EDITOR In the past year, I’ve had the pleasure of celebrating with two dear friends on their wedding days. Each celebration different from one another, yet still the same showcase of love and adoration. Weddings are a joyous occasion, not only for the couples who are saying “I Do,” but for the attendees who are witnessing the exchange of vows. However, it takes a great deal to get up to that moment. There’s planning, planning and even more planning on top of that. And let’s face it, no one wants the tasks of putting everything together to get in the way of the most important aspect of them all: the couple. In this issue of our annual Brides publication, we’ve highlighted a few vendors to assist you with ideas for your special day. Everyone, by now, knows of Miss Mamie’s Cupcakes. Mamie Doyle has been baking yummy goodness in Cobb County for years and in the last few has made it onto the national stage courtesy of Food Network and the Cooking Channel. She gives us the details on wedding dessert trends. Looking for a unique place setting for

your bridal shower or wedding dinner? Vanessa Gilbreath with Vintage English Teacup has just what you need. Her inventory of exquisite English fine china is sure to get a lot of oohs and aahs from guests. The setting is all too important for your big day and Ball Ground’s Wheeler House fits the bill. This historic home built in 1906 features a climate-controlled barn with enough room on the dancefloor for your favorite uncle to break out his impeccable funky chicken dance, not to mention picturesque grounds. We also give you a few tips on planning the perfect honeymoon, along with an extensive look at some of hottest trends in bridal fashion for 2017. And don’t miss our newlyweds features, each a unique tale. And, of course, we’ll bring you a listing of some sparkly rings and a list of the wonderful venues to say ‘I Do’ in Cobb and Cherokee counties. Huge thanks to everyone who made this issue special and we hope you enjoy what’s inside. With gratitude, LaTria Garnigan

ee Lusk, owner and CEO of The Wheeler House, remembers vividly as a 5-year-old asking his parents to drive the long way home so they could pass by the “big yellow house,” dreaming of the day he could own and renovate the historic home. “The house had always been in bad shape,” Lusk recalled. “For 21 years it had sat dormant.” Built in 1906 by the owner of the Wheeler Lumber Yard in Ball Ground, the house had been foreclosed upon multiple times over the years, and though Lusk had twice been outbid, the third time was the charm. “After I bought the house, I did a full overhaul; from the roof to the foundation was redone and everything in between,” Lusk said. “Everything was returned to its original, historic state. I just love history, and I think it needs to be preserved instead of changed.” In 2011, The Wheeler House Wedding Venue opened its doors to its first wedding. That same year, Lusk also won a Cherokee County Preservation Award for its restoration. “I was going to live here originally, but I did have the idea of making it a wedding venue,” Lusk said. “When I bought the property in 2010, lots of my friends were getting married at that time, and I knew I could do it better and cheaper.” In 2013, Lusk added a barn, including a spacious dance floor that serves as the reception site and as an option for a ceremony site, if a bride chooses to be married outdoors under the venue’s arbor. The arbor, by the way, is modeled after the arbor seen at the end of the movie “The Hangover.” “What sets us apart from competitors is most barns are not centrally heated and cooled, but ours is,” Lusk said. “We offer basically every single thing out there, and I feel we have everything I wanted in 2010, we have today.”

The Wheeler House can accommodate up to 350 guests, and during peak season, the venue hosts three to five ceremonies every weekend. “We don’t just push the bride through,” he said. “We take the time to get to know them, and we want them to leave knowing they’re special and it was their day.” Most recently, Lusk has purchased 22 adjoining acres and renovated three cottages that were built by the original homeowner, John Wheeler, for employees of his lumber yard. The cottages can be rented by brides who want to stay the entire weekend. “Coming in 2017, or maybe 2018, we want to build a vineyard on the extra land behind the cottages and do another wedding venue,” Lusk said. “One day we see a whole community built around The Wheeler House and vineyard, a community like Serenbe.” Serenbe is a “new urban” village, located within the city limits of Chattahoochee Hills, in south Fulton County. Just before Lusk opened the doors of The Wheeler house, he was contacted by a television show that wanted to shoot an episode there. He recalls the show had something to do with ghosts, but he took a pass, noting the only thing supernatural about The Wheeler House is the service. “I’ve never had any incidents of ghosts,” he said. “I told (the TV show) we don’t want gloomy thoughts and black dresses. We want brides with happy thoughts and white dresses!”

{newlyweds}

Jenna & Austin Jenna and Austin Henderson were married May 28, 2016 at Henderson Farms in Calhoun. The couple resides in Acworth. written by Mary Cosgrove photography by Blush Magnolia Photography

O

ne random musing turned into six months of hard work but ended with a wedding and a business. Austin and Jenna Henderson’s relationship started off quiet, yet with a spark of fate. Jenna had signed up for Tinder, a social networking app, but was half-hearted about following through on any dates. “I said to my roommate, ‘You have to make me go,’” Jenna said. “I had been flaking out. I didn’t want to go.” After a long stretch of being single, the idea of meeting up with strangers for dates was not appealing. But, her roommate pushed Jenna out the door and that’s when she met Austin. “I had been on [Tinder] for six months before I met Jenna,” Austin said. “I probably had been on 20 dates, but it was different when I met Jenna, for sure.”

BRIDES 2017 (48) 48

The relationship grew from there, with them finding out they shared core values. “Me and Jenna are a lot alike,” Austin said. “We are both extremely close to our family and family-oriented. We both have a lot of similar things we want to accomplish in life. We both have dreams and goals, even though they don’t match up perfectly, we are headed in the same direction.” Which brings us to their wedding business. But first — the engagement. The two were headed out for a trip to Cancun, which was their first big trip together. Jenna said she had a feeling Austin was going to pop the question. Austin figured she was a little suspicious, so he waited until the night before their last day there to throw her off course. “We were walking through the property and he got down on one knee and asked,” Jenna said. From there, it was time to plan the wedding, which was May 28, 2016. They decided they would use Austin’s family property in Calhoun — Henderson Farms. According to Austin, the property has been in the family for six generations, dating back to the late 1800s. The farm land has been used for many purposes through the decades — growing hay, then wheat and then to raising cattle, then chickens.

1/28/2017 10:50:47 PM

It was Austin’s father who was raising chickens, but a few years ago, retired from the operation. Instead, he decided to build a pavilion and overlook at the highest point of the property, which the family used for reunions and get-togethers. “When I and Jenna started dating, I took her there,” Austin said. “I mentioned we could get married up here.” The two bounced around the idea — having the ceremony at the outlook and the reception in the barn, which at the time housed a tractor and a Bobcat and nothing else. But then the family all collaborated to turn it into a venue. “It took about six months,” Austin said. “We turned the barn into a very formal, nice reception area.” Austin, his dad and Jenna’s dad ran electrical wire, added two bathrooms and an outhouse by the pavilion. “We definitely have invested in it,” he said. And while the barn was being built up for the wedding, so was an idea. “We knew we were going to use it for future weddings,” Austin said. The Henderson’s wedding had an upbeat rustic feel, and was mostly DIY.

BRIDES 2017 (48) 49

“Our centerpieces were wildflowers,” Jenna said. “We did flowers from Costco. We did everything ourselves but it was worth it.” The reception food was catered by Righteous Cue in Marietta, and Austin said the restaurant is now their preferred caterer. He said they had large white linen runners and draping, and had a large ‘H’ cut out to hang at the entrance of the barn. “That’s a theme,” he said. “It’s included in the packages. We cut out the initial letter of the groom’s last name.” The couple gets to keep the initial as a gift from the Henderson family. So far the venue has hosted one other wedding, with another scheduled in April. There have also been birthday and anniversary parties held at the Henderson Farms. For now, the couple have kept their day jobs, Austin working for a fire protection company and Jenna working in property management. But Austin said the venue is doing well. And it turns out, it fits well with their dreams of the future. “It’s been one of my dreams to live on a farm,” Jenna said. “[Austin] wants to run his own business.” Their dreams, just like the two of them, are a perfect fit.

Q&A // Jenna Henderson What was one of the most special moments at your wedding? Austin surprised me during our first look with a ring he designed using his granny’s diamonds. It was a complete surprise! What was one of the hardest things about planning? We had to do everything ourselves! Austin worked extremely hard on the barn and getting it complete before the wedding. We had an intimate ceremony (about 60 people) and it was hard to choose who to invite. The little details were the most stressful ... colors, flowers, invites! Any wedding bloopers you care to mention? I honestly do not think there were any bloopers! DJ, food and guests were great! What was the most enjoyable part of the evening? Being with friends and family, especially since the wedding took place at Austin’s parents’ house. It was very intimate and whenever we

go back to the house it brings back all the memories! What song did you use for your first dance? Is there a story behind it? Al Green “Let’s Stay Together.” My dad actually surprised my mom with a 40th birthday video and used this song in it. I love that it isn’t slow and it is a classic. Never gets old! Any advice for newly engaged couples on planning a wedding? Give yourself enough time to plan! Don’t rush the process and enjoy every minute of it! Having a supportive family was a huge help and having a good team to help you on the day of the wedding is key! Any advice for newlyweds? Marriage is amazing! It is hard at times, and unbelievably enjoyable at others! Make sure you marry someone that has the same ambitions and timeline as you. Austin and I love to travel and want the same future for our future family. Having a partner in life is so great!

Q&A // Austin Henderson What was one of the most special moments at your wedding? It was at the family farm, also the amount of close friends that attended, some I hadn’t seen in years. What was one of the hardest things about planning? Getting everyone on the same page, Moms with lots of ideas and input. Any wedding bloopers you care to mention? Nothing too crazy, instead of saying ‘I do’ I said ‘I will.’ What was the most enjoyable part of the evening? The first look with Jenna, and giving her my grandmother’s ring as the wedding band. She had no idea that I was going to give it to her. Any advice for newly engaged couples on planning a wedding? Don’t stress the small stuff, be very flexible. And too many cooks in the kitchen makes for a bad meal. Any advice for newlyweds? Try to focus on your spouse’s strengths. You’ll definitely learn new things about one another so try to stay positive and enjoy the small things. Put the phones down after a certain time each night and just talk.

Save stress (and money!) by hiring a travel professional to plan your honeymoon By LaTria Garnigan

epending on how important the traditional after-wedding honeymoon is to you, it can end up being a less expensive weekend jaunt out-of-town or an extravagant multi-week adventure overseas. Two things will mainly determine that for you: planning and budget. Working with a travel agent could be your saving grace, leaving you with one less task to worry about. Melinda Tharpe of My Travel Magic in Marietta gave us some great information on planning a honeymoon and recommended a few excellent locations to visit.

TOP PLACES BOOKED The Caribbean and Mexico seem to be the natural standbys — and with near-perfect, year-round weather they can’t be beat. Other locations that have been popular are St. Lucia, St. Thomas and Punta Cana. “I personally love Mexico … there are a lot of options in the Riviera Maya. The big thing when you’re doing honeymoon travel is the transportation involved,” said Melinda. And with just a short flight, you can be in place and on the beach in no time. As well, most of the Caribbean islands are easily accessible with air travel.

SO, WHAT’S THE COST? Your cost will most definitely hinge on where you’d like to travel, what you’d like to do while there and how long you are able to stay. Melinda says couples can do a very nice honeymoon for $2,000 if they are willing to take the easy route, for instance, and stay in Mexico. “I would prefer closer to $2,300 for a week and if they have fewer days, we can finesse the budget that way.” Keep in mind that airfare remains fairly stable. Also, all-inclusive resorts are a great way to save some extra dollars and couples won’t have to worry about the charges unless they plan to do extra activities. Travel ease plays a large part. If your destination requires just one airplane trip, you’re set. But cost can increase if you have to make multiple trips to get to your final location. “We tend to think we can get everywhere we want to,” said Melinda. “It takes several hours to get to place to place and sometimes people aren’t aware of that. You can eat up vacation time getting from one place to another.” One prime way to see several locations, while saving money, is a cruise. There are a number of advantages of cruises and being in Georgia it’s easy to drive (and save airfare costs) to the ports. You could also use the time before or after a cruise to vacation in the port city for some extra relaxation. On the high end, couples might be intrigued by the likes of Tahiti, Europe and the Greek Isles. Think close to $2,000 on airfare alone! But don’t fret, Melinda says there are plenty of things to do in Europe — like joining a group tour — that are cost effective.

HANDING OVER THE REINS With wedding planning being priority No. 1, and hopefully in the hands of a capable wedding planning professional, it should be easy to hand over the control of your honeymoon prep to a travel expert. And not just for the ease of mind, but as a savings mechanism as well. “Someone like me is going to give couples all of the attention and focus on what they really want to do with their budget in mind,” said Melinda. A perk of having a travel professional handle your plans is that they are capable of keeping their eye on minute by minute deals and savings, without compromising quality. And Melinda says there are no worries about payments — those are sent directly to the actual supplier.

MAKING THE MOST OF TIME So while you’re looking at where to go and how much it will cost, you may also want to really delve into how long you can stay. Although 10 days would be the ultimate way to relax and explore new lands, not everyone’s work schedules will allow it. Melinda says five days is a great number, if the couple is willing to pick a closer destination. But once you get into four days, it can be more like a long weekend — which in actuality may be suitable for some couples and perfect for a Caribbean cruise. “People have different needs and different issues and we can still get a good trip together if everyone is realistic about what they are willing to do.” One tip Melinda has is to make sure to factor in travel time when you’re deciding how many days to spend on your honeymoon. If you’re going to a location where you’ll have to hop off of a plane and take several other modes of transportation to get to your final spot, it can eat into your time.

ove over, three-tiered vanilla cake. Mini is the word for modern weddings and Miss Mamie’s on the Marietta Square is happy to oblige. “Things have changed quite a bit since we opened in 2009,” Mamie Doyle, owner and head baker of Miss Mamie’s, said. “The boundaries of a wedding are not as tight as they used to be and what used to be avant-garde is now on-trend and increasingly requested.” One of those once-passé trends is having a tower of cupcakes instead of a traditional cake with its many tiers and layers. Doyle said she and her shop are making more and more desserts and delicacies in miniature portions for guests while sometimes still providing a small “cutting cake” for the bride and groom to continue the tradition of cutting the cake together. Doyle said this allows for the bride and groom to provide multiple flavors in smaller portions so that more guests can have desserts to their liking. Money is also a factor, as other alternatives mean the newlyweds can avoid paying the “cutting fees” for wedding cakes, which can run as high as $5 per slice. “People get more of a variety with the mini desserts, and we’ve done all kinds of desserts for that, like mini cupcakes,
