4 FROM THE EDITOR Weddings are festive occasions. They’re filled with love, friends, family and great moments to cherish. However, the days between getting the ring and saying ‘I Do,’ can be a bit strenuous. There are flowers to decide upon. Cake and food to taste. Friends to ask to participate. Dresses to try on. Venues to visit. And even fonts and paper to choose for invitations. It can be a bit of a tall order, even for the most organized among us. But it doesn’t have to be. Our annual Brides edition is here to help you learn more about local vendors and to be a guide during your planning process. Throughout this edition of Brides, there are several local vendors who can assist you with your special day as well as a few stellar love stories to inspire the romantic in all of us. Perhaps one of the most important pieces of wedding planning is picking out invitations. And with that comes a host of other paper needs, including save the dates and even wedding stationery for ‘Thank You’ cards. Kim Peace Hill has been an expert in that area for over 30 years and shares with
us the multitude of choices couples can choose. Are you vegan or have a family member who is? Do you crave a specialty menu for your wedding reception rather than the typical dinner fare? Or are you looking for a fresh way to incorporate macaroni and cheese into your buffet that will ‘wow’ your guests? Elizabeth Weaver with Elizabeth’s Edibles tells us some tips and highlights for providing excellent cuisine for bridal events. Make nature a part of your celebration with the help of Pleasant Union Farm in Canton. The picturesque venue has taken an active role in spearheading the concept of farm-to-table events for couples. We have a local marriage/couples counselor who will give some tips for couples. Don’t miss our two great love stories and weddings to cheer on in our Newlyweds features, beautiful bridal trends that will give you dress envy, unique jewelry for that eternal showcase of love and more. We hope you enjoy what’s inside. With gratitude, LaTria Garnigan

ara and Ben Sharenko’s story begins a long time ago. During a time of innocence, crushes, field trips and school dances. “He was my first official boyfriend,” Cara explains of the then fifth graders. “We went to the sock hop together, and we didn’t even touch.” And as many middle school relationships do, the couple faded out. Eventually, Cara went to high school at Pebblebrook, and Ben went to Pope. The two were separated further when Ben attended college at the University of Georgia in Athens and Cara went to a college in St. Louis, Missouri. But fate, or rather Facebook, brought them back together in the summer of 2012 — five years after they graduated from high school. Ben spotted Cara in a photo posted by a mutual friend and decided to get in touch. “I remember telling one of my friends that I was going to meet my fifth-grade boyfriend,” Cara said. The two clicked; and Cara recalls with a laugh that she thought it might just a summer romance. That’s because Cara was involved in musical theater in New York and was planning to move back at the end of summer. “We didn’t have a plan,” she said, as far as making the long distance relationship work. But another twist of fate brought the couple together for good. — more on page 10 written by Mary Cosgrove photography by Oak Avenue Photography www.oakavephoto.com

She had struggled with the autoimmune disease for the last eight years, and only received an official diagnosis three years ago. What Cara didn’t realize when she was moving back home was that she was gaining a future with not just her boyfriend, but an incredible support system. “He always puts himself second, and he’s always been very supportive,” she said. “It is scary. We went into a marriage with a lot of scary things in the future. He’s always been like, ‘This is what we need to do’ — never blamed me for having this.” Ben even helped her open up about her diagnosis. “I wasn’t publicly talking about it because I had this whole dream of moving to New York and being on Broadway,” Cara said. “I had trained the last 10 years to do so and I needed to find a new path, but I was embarrassed.” But now she helps raise money for the Georgia branch of the Lupus Foundation of America and started blogging about her condition. And even though Cara’s lupus reshaped her future and her dreams, she’s now living a new one with a supportive husband. “I wouldn’t change a thing of what has happened,” she said. Ben proposed by the riverside in Chattanooga in October 2015, and the two wed in January 2017 at The Finest resort in Playa Mujeres, Mexico. Cara said since many of their friends and family would be traveling long-distance to attend the wedding anyway, it just made sense to have a destination wedding. “It was the most amazing week,” she said. “Beyond magical.”

The first night, the couple hosted a welcome cocktail, and the next day was spent at the beach. They had a rooftop rehearsal dinner, but due to rain and high humidity, the couple had to move the ceremony indoors. Still, Cara said the change of venue worked out and what was most important was having a whole week to spend time with friends and family. “You normally don’t have the time,” she said of the rushed nature of weddings. “It was amazing to have that time together.” Ben and Cara live and work in Smyrna, and have two cats, Jack and Gus. They recently celebrated their first wedding anniversary.

12 Q&A What did you like most about having a destination wedding? Cara- Being at a stunning resort, amazing food and drinks with all of my favorite people in the world for five days, I will relive in my head forever. Our friends and family are still talking about it a year later! We are already planning when we can all go back again. Ben- It felt like a vacation with extended family and friends. What was your favorite part of your wedding (either the ceremony or reception)? Cara- My heart says ceremony, but my feet say reception! The reception was a full-on dance party and the most fun. We wrote our own vows, and Ben got pretty emotional during his and it was absolutely mesmerizing. Ben- The reception. The main event was over; and everyone could relax and have a good time.
weather, so that’s always fun! All the rehearsal we did the day before was thrown out, but everyone helped to make it work. In the end, we wouldn’t change a thing, but it was definitely a more stressful ‘morning of’ than what we had planned. Ben- Re-planning the wedding the morning of, but new plans worked out better than the originals, so it was a lucky turn of events. What advice would you give to newlyweds? Cara & Ben- Enjoy this time of life together. You will never get back that first year of marriage, so try and enjoy the small things! n
Any wedding bloopers to share? Cara- Well, we changed both venues the day of due to

O
nce the glow of the engagement has worn off, it’s time to get to work. Do you want a big wedding or a small one? Indoor ceremony or one outside? DJ or a live band? Decisions will rule the day up until the big ceremony. But according to Kim Peace Hill, owner of Fancy Pants Events and Design, your paper goods are the star of the show. Invitations aren’t simple anymore. Couples have a plethora of design options to choose from. And it can seem a bit overwhelming choosing the right fit for your celebration. But having someone who is knowledgeable about the process can make things flow seamlessly. — continued on page 16 By LaTria Garnigan Photography by Kelly J. Huff and courtesy of Carlson Craft

16 Perhaps the first step is to decide on paper or whatever product you want your wedding details printed on. Even within choosing paper, you have to worry about weight, type and color of the paper. After that, you move over to whether you want letterpress, engraving, embossing or digital print. And then you can begin to look at ink colors, foils and dyes. “We put all options together and then look at what their wedding style is,” says Hill. “Whether it’s an extremely formal affair where they will want letterpress on heavy cotton or a beach wedding where they may want something that is a flat digital print on regular paper.” While handwritten calligraphy has taken off the past few years, there is still a market for the more traditional printed invitation. The great thing is that couples aren’t locked into just one standard. Options are limitless, not only for the invitation itself, but also save the dates, RSVP cards, table placements and just about anything that will have your wedding day information. “I have taken engagement photos and incorporated that into the save the dates,” says Hill. “So I can help them design something that is really unique. It doesn’t have to be straight out of a book.” Along with personal style, the season may also nudge couples toward a certain design aesthetic. Jewel tones tend to be popular during the winter months with lots of purples and textures, while watercolors and deeper fall colors top the list for the fall. And last summer, Hill says, shimmer paper was highly requested. Other recent trends include gold and of course the elegant look and feel of black and white. So what do you do when you’ve chosen and ordered your invitations and

wedding stationery and it arrives at your home? There’s still one more important process that you must go through. Hill says there is a certain way couples must stuff their envelopes. Most invitations come with an inner and outer envelope — the key is to keep the invitation and inserts looking as nice as possible. Here’s how Hill says you should exercise wedding stationery etiquette: • Place the invitation inside the inner envelope with the ink facing out (wording facing you). • In front of that place the RSVP, map and reception cards. • On the outside of that inner envelope, write the names of the individuals who are invited, then turn it around and place it inside the outer envelope. • The outer envelope is where you address the invitees formally with Mr. and Mrs. or Dr. and Mrs. or The Honorable. Addresses are spelled out, and if the number of the house is lower than 20, then make sure to spell it out. • Your return address should be written or printed on the back flap of the outer envelope, and don’t forget to include a stamp. It may seem like a daunting task to take on, but Hill says wedding stationery is the first opportunity guests have to see your wedding style and formality. It lets guests know what type of wedding day they can expect to see, whether casual or traditional. n Kim Peace Hill Fancy Pants Events and Design http://fancypantseventsanddesign.com/

Beyond the formal corsage: Floral accessories get creative Wire reports

ant a memorable accessory for that big event? Think beyond the traditional pinned-on boutonnière or corsage, and consider wearing a piece of floral art. “There are those floral artists who are thinking outside the box and are using blooms and botanical elements in new, fresh ways, as in floral jewelry and wearables,” said Tobey Nelson, owner of Tobey Nelson Events and Design in Langley, Washington. Wearable flowers have been getting play on fashion runways and are increasingly popular as necklaces, bracelets and crowns at weddings, proms or other special occasions. Some can even be replanted later. Nelson describes her flower jewelry as “neck gardens” or “wrist gardens.” “I see so many different plant parts — be it a flower or berry or an acorn or curly stem — as a gem of nature,” she said. “It is only fitting that I would fashion them into jewelry.” Floral designers cajole blooms — often succulents — into jewelry bases that can be worn around a wrist or finger, or used as necklaces, earrings and headpieces. Many of the bases can be used again after the flowers are spent. Succulents are resilient, simple to grow and don’t need to be watered frequently. Sedums, echeverias and sempervivums multiply rapidly. Eventually, they will expand off their bases, sending out roots in search of nutrients. “The life expectancy of a floral wearables piece made from succulents can be three weeks to two months, as long as it is stored in sunlight,” Nelson said. “Jewelry made from succulents can be taken apart when the plants begin to outgrow the jewelry piece and then planted.” Susan Mcleary — a floral designer, artist and instructor who operates Passionflower in Ann Arbor, Michigan — has a long list of go-to flowers and foliage that she uses as wearables. “The best way to form your own list is to test obsessively,” Mcleary said. “Anytime I get a new flower in the studio, I snip off a few blooms to test how they fare out of
18
water. “For floral jewelry, I love using young, tight ranunculus, astrantia blooms, hyacinth pips, delphinium florets, huechera foliage, herbs, berries, pods, miniature orchids to name a few.” Floral pieces appreciate a periodic misting, but they are made to last for the duration of a one-day event, such as a wedding or party, Mcleary said. Succulents can last up to three weeks without watering. Mcleary’s designs often center around a single family of colors, adding a variety
of shades and textures to boost interest. “Larger blooms and darker shades typically are set down first, and more delicate materials and lighter shades float above,” she said. She receives many illustrated thank you notes from former clients — usually brides — for whom she designed succulent jewelry that was successfully re-potted. “A favorite photo came on one couple’s first anniversary: a pot of overflowing plants, happily nestled in their new home,” she said. n

Why you should hire a personal chef to cater your reception By LaTria Garnigan | Photos courtesy of Katie Eaker & Keith Goodwin
A
fourth-generation Marietta native, Elizabeth Weaver is truly homegrown.
The owner of Elizabeth’s Edibles, Weaver has been sharpening her culinary skills since she was a teenager. Now the newly-published cookbook author, culinary instructor and personal chef spends most of her time making sure that couples’ big day goes off without a hitch when it comes to food. But whatever you do, don’t call her a caterer — there’s a stark difference in what she and her staff bring to their events. “As a personal chef, I specialize in cooking exactly what you want to eat from scratch. Special diets are never an issue,” says Weaver. “Everything I do is from scratch: salad dressings, sauces, gluten-free, dairy-free. These are things personal chefs know how to do on a regular basis.” — more on page 22

his is somewhat of a second career for Weaver. For 30 years, she worked in the arts as a director of cultural affairs with the Cobb County government. And she credits that experience with helping her to strengthen her skills as a personal chef. Her expertise in planning events and dealing with vendors and different types of personalities came to be a bonus. It was also a way to get her foot in the door for her future culinary endeavors. “There were a lot of gallery openings I would cook for, dinner theater … and friends started to ask me to cook for parties, graduations, baby showers,” says Weaver. So when it came time for her retirement from government, she already had Plan B in the works. Plus, as she put it, 51 was too young to just sit around. For weddings, Weaver is a wealth of knowledge and can be one of the big sources of comfort for couples planning their big day. Choosing what kind of food to serve, the quantity and accounting for different dietary needs can be a lot to take in. Weaver and her staff are able to come in and help craft a truly unique, special and inclusive menu that all can enjoy. Not to mention she has the capability of offering more than just the food on the plate.
22
“It depends on the size of the event, but I’m always hands-on no matter how many people are there,” says Weaver. She has direct access to sous chefs, assistants, servers, cake cutters, bartenders and any other needs couples may have. Food isn’t her only priority, with all of her assistants, Weaver is able to handle the rental of tablecloths, napkins, plates, cups and table decorations. “I can handle as much as you need on the reception side of the wedding,” she said. However, her most important task at hand is the cuisine itself: the taste, presentation and amount. And one important note Weaver wants couples to know is that they need to have what they want for their wedding. “If you want mac and cheese and cake, then go for it,” she says. “We can find a way to class it all up so that it goes together.” Having her clients enjoy their food is her priority. Being a personal chef, she’s able to customize just about any menu for her clients and offer them several options before they decide on exactly what they’d like for their celebration. “I don’t want the food to be anything they stress over … I really strive to make my portion as quiet as possible. I don’t want them to have to worry.” n

On Nov. 14, Weaver’s first cookbook, Generations of Edibles: A Southern Legacy, was published, showcasing her familial roots through food. It features 131 of her family recipes Weaver says connects to her family and friends and is a beacon of inspiration on traditional southern food. The spark to create the cookbook was perhaps strengthened by her late grandmothers’ handwritten recipes.

24 jewelry tips
H ow to pick the perfect engagement ring An engagement ring is at once a symbol of love and commitment and also a reflection of a woman’s personal style. For the engagedto-be who hasn’t quite determined the perfect sparkler for herself, articulating an engagement ring style can seem challenging. That’s where a trusted jeweler is committed to helping every happily ever after begin with the perfect ring — and that means taking the time to understand every future bride’s personal taste. Here are a few tips to help determine what your engagement ring style may be.
Timeless Beauty For the woman who prefers a more traditional style (think clean designs and sophisticated patterns), a classic engagement ring may be the perfect fit. A great example of this is the solitaire setting, which focuses on highlighting the gorgeous center stone, offering an elegant statement. A modern take on this classic would be the halo setting, where an outline of diamonds encircles and enhances the center stone for a slight twist on tradition.
A Touch of Romance The woman who thoughtfully selects every accessory to offer the perfect complement to any look knows it’s all about the details. An engagement ring with ornate design and intricate craftsmanship offers a distinct, vintage feel inspired by and echoing the most romantic eras of the past. From milgrain finishing to delicate antiquing, these subtle touches offer something extra special — which is fitting for such an important piece of jewelry.
Forever Fashion Forward The fashionista prides herself on being one-of-a-kind, so her engagement ring obviously has to follow suit. From embracing fancy shape center stones (like pear, emerald, marquise and oval) to standing out with a gorgeous rose gold or mixed metal setting, there are many options to ensure the engagement ring is as head-turning as the woman wearing it.

If you are still unsure of the style that’s right for you, fear not, retailers can be a good place to go for inspiration. They have a huge selection of the most popular collections and styles and even offer the option for you to design the perfect engagement ring yourself. Most stores offer custom designs where customers can bring their jewelry dreams to life. Certified diamontologists and master craftsmen work directly with each customer to create a completely original piece of jewelry. Once aligned on the general design, the customer is able to customize, from selecting the type and color of metal to deciding on the shape and cut of the diamond. For what may be the most important piece of jewelry you will ever wear, take the time to understand your options and find a piece that suits your style completely. — StatePoint

WAVES As the name insists, waves were the inspiration for this band. Cardenas said he came up with the design since most people tend to rotate their ring with their fingers. It can be made in a variety of styles: silver ($220) or 14k gold ($1,280) with diamonds ($1,650). There is also a silver version with aquamarine stones inset ($250).
If you’re looking for a wedding band for your groom-to-be who needs something that can hold up to harsh conditions, Cardenas offers a line featuring titanium, Damascus steel and zirconium. $500-$2,000

farm to table Incorporating character, charm and nature for your wedding day By Amanda Swartwood Photography by Kaptured Photography

ant to make your wedding day a truly unique experience? Farm-to-table weddings celebrate not only a couple’s love for each other, but also their love of community, food, drink and music. Born from the farm-to-table movement in restaurants years ago, couples work with caterers, florists, musicians and bartenders to plan one-of-akind events based on local, organic, seasonal materials.

N
o one knows this trend better than Becky Kimmons of Pleasant Union Farm. She and her husband, Cale, own and operate the 18-acre farm in Canton. “Farm-to-table weddings are like hosting Sunday supper with your closest family and friends,” Kimmons explains. “You break bread together, enjoy meals prepared fresh from the farm and delight in the beauty of the landscape.” Four years ago, the Kimmons’ purchased Pleasant Union Farm, where they raise goats and chickens and tend over 700 blueberry bushes. A barn, complete with heating and air accommodating up to 150 guests, serves as the venue. They partner with Jenna Schreiber, the head chef of 61 Main in Jasper, to create a menu using local, in-season ingredients. “We enjoy working with couples to showcase the true flavor of the day they’ve chosen to get married,” Kimmons says. “Many of the ingredients and décor we use come directly from our farm, or neighboring farms in Georgia. It’s about celebrating what’s in season locally — tomatoes and corn in the summer, and root vegetables in the fall.” With blueberries being their largest crop, they are easily incorporated into everything: food, drinks and décor. And when staff at the farm have sufficient notice from couples, they can grow specific fruits, vegetables and flowers for their big day.

So, how do you plan a farm-to-table wedding? “Start with a great caterer,” Kimmons advises. “Talk with them about what’s in season on your big day, and develop a menu around those ingredients.” Pinterest has a wealth of information, and she suggests serving charcuterie plates with locally-made farm fresh cheese, honey, nuts and meat. Fresh salads with strawberries, blueberries or apples highlight the tasty harvests of Georgia. Offer guests a touch of local flair using fresh peaches or homemade honey and jam as favors. At the farm, bartenders create specialty, in season, organic cocktails. Kimmons even uses mint and blueberry to flavor the water. Some couples enjoy making trips to North Georgia wineries and local breweries searching for just the right drinks to serve. Once the caterer and menu have been decided, talk with florists about what’s in season. Oftentimes, flowers grown locally can be cut the week of (or even the day before), giving the event a fresh feel. “The look of flowers varies week to week, so cutting stems the week of ensures you will have something beautiful and one-of-akind,” Kimmons adds. “Incorporate colorful touches of nature like berries, spices, and vegetables in bouquets and boutonnieres, centerpieces and décor. Dried flower petals make great confetti for the bride and groom’s send-off!”

32 Invitations are a guest’s introduction to the farm-to-table wedding concept. As such, use local businesses and designs that convey the flavor of the venue. Mail invitations made from organic materials, or even consider “plantable” invitations as a unique announcement for your nuptials. Incorporate local musicians or bands, and select music reflective of the area. “Before the event, make a list for photographers of every picture you want — include drinks, food, flowers, invitations and favors,” Kimmons says. “Your photos tell the story of your wedding day for a lifetime, so be sure to include every detail.” After all the planning is done, Kimmons reminds couples to fully explain the meaning behind every detail. “It could be as simple as including a menu with descriptions about each course, or making signs to accompany food and drink,” she says. “Whatever you choose, make sure guests know where everything is from so that they understand the thought and care that goes into planning your day. Farm-to-table weddings are about a couple’s character and the area’s character, and you want to convey that.” n

Step out in style with these 2018 spring bridal trends tacks of magazines litter the floor, binders chocked full of website image print outs are heaped on the bed, spreadsheets detailing prioritized lists of venues, bakers, florists and more clutter your computer’s desktop — wedding season approaches. February is here, and it’s time for our annual Brides issue and, with it, our run down of the most stylish spring bridal fashions. If you’ve been scouring magazines, websites and local boutiques for your perfect dress and haven’t yet found ‘the one,’ never fear because this year’s bridal fashion spread features seven of the most fashionably ooh- and ahh-worthy gowns (available locally) that won’t break the bank. From oversized bows, ruffles and pearl embellishments, to modern classic silhouettes, updated (and very alluring) high-necks and daringly sheer corsets, the spring 2018 bridal trends include something for just about any bride. And they come in more colors than you can shake a stick at,
S
including this season’s hottest hue: blue. Of course, the bold yet timeless black dress has solidified its spot in the annual wedding gown offerings, as has the short-length dress. Accessories like capes, capelets and gloves are back with a vengeance this year and add a dynamic touch to your wedding day ensemble. This year, we’ve taken a new approach to jewelry and opted for a locally handcrafted line that is accessible, artistic and a true nod to each woman’s unique personality: Tisch Jewelry Werks. These statement pieces were handpicked by Trapp Tischner and her team to perfectly complement each of our seven dresses. We’ve also added a touch of ‘something old’ to a few of the looks with vintage costume pearls and the stylist’s own diamond ball jewelry (included as hair accessories), compliments of our talented hair and makeup artist MARAZ. Mix and match these captivating looks to ensure your wedding day is truly an expression of your individual style. Happy browsing!

36 Gone are the days when short bridal gowns were only for destination weddings. This Enchanting by Mon Cheri (style 215102) above-the-knee satin, tulle, and lace A-line dress is at once elegant and functional for just about any style of nuptials. Its three-quarter sleeves and lace illusion bateau neckline with semi-sweetheart bodice give it an almost royal feel from the waist up, while the short flared skirt with concealed pockets takes you from ceremony to reception comfortably and, at only $249, affordably. An added bonus to this smart modern look is that it ticks another spring trend box with its black lace overlay. Tisch Jewelry Werks paired this lovely style with a Hawk’s eye beaded bracelet featuring Swarovski beads ($36) and smoky blue sapphire earrings ($72). Now, there’s your something blue! Enchanting by Mon Cheri gowns are available at Bravura.

Dare-to-bare sheer corsets are all the rage for spring 2018, but not every bride wants to push the envelope quite that far on her wedding day. This Aria Los Angeles (style Anastasia) strapless fulllength ball gown with a sweep train lets you experiment with the sheer style while staying in your comfort zone. The champagne duchess satin and off-white re-embroidered lace of the garment-boned corset provide a sheer illusion from afar while still offering full coverage. The dropped waist seamlessly flows into a whimsical silk ruffle ball gown skirt sure to make any bride feel like a princess on her big day. To match this bold look, Tisch Jewelry Werks paired this statement-making gown with a labradorite links and golden circle necklace ($92) and quartz drop earrings ($42). The dress retails for between $2,000 and $2,500. Aria Los Angeles gowns are available at Adore.

38 This Justin Alexander (style 8946) classic V-neck, structured A-line silhouette gown also packs a surprise contemporary punch for the modern bride who wants to be on trend but not trendy. Its sharp black cummerbund belt with grand oversized back loop give a nod to this season’s popular black hues and affinity for huge bow embellishments — all without overshadowing the bride. A Mikado satin gown with hidden pockets and a chapel train, this dress exemplifies the many ways designers are breathing new life into vintage lines this season. The pros at Tisch Jewelry Werks added a statement pyrite and baroque pearl double wrap necklace ($126) to balance out the clean style and deep plunge of the dress. This gown retails for between $1,500 and $1,999. Justin Alexander gowns are available at Adore and Bel Fiore.

Pearls signify loyalty, generosity and purity and are said to have a calming effect, so it’s no small wonder the spring runways were awash in these marine gems. This Aria Los Angeles boat neck, backless wedding gown (style Margaux) in off-white crepe will have your guests in awe of its simple lines and intricately embroidered pearl beaded lace embellishments and leave you feeling (and looking) your absolute best with its sheath silhouette, raglan style bodice and super sexy thigh slit. Tisch Jewelry Werks paired this dreamy dress with a standout labradorite cuff bracelet ($52), while our hair and makeup artist, MARAZ, used a vintage pearl necklace with tassel (stylist’s own) in the model’s hair to add an unexpected twist on traditional bridal jewelry. The gown retails for between $2,000 and $2,500. Aria Los Angeles gowns are available at Adore.

How can I buy a home without a down payment? According to the National Association of REALTORS, the most difficult step in the home buying process is saving for the down payment. Surprisingly, you may not have to come up with much of a down payment at all! Sometimes, buyers are allowed to borrow gift funds from a friend or family member. Furthermore, there are quite a few down payment assistance programs in the state of Georgia, ranging upwards to $15,000 or more. Contact Nic for further details!

40 Another popular trend this season is the ruffle, and they are simply everywhere — from oversized ruffles in full skirts and on intricate embellishments to ruffle-like patterns in fabrics and even accessories. But a lot of the extreme ruffles seen on spring runways may not be wearable for the everyday bride. This look, by Enchanting by Mon Cheri (style 117192; $339) brings in a very fashion-forward cascading ruffle accent without overpowering the sleeveless chiffon A-line gown with inset chapel train. Our favorite aspect of this comfortable yet sexy dress is its beaded sweetheart blouson bodice with hand-beaded illusion jewel neckline and beaded illusion keyhole blouson back that shows just the right amount of skin. Because this dress features such a beautifully-beaded bodice, we chose to pair it with only a simple set of vintage pearl clip-on earrings (stylist’s own). Enchanting by Mon Cheri gowns are available at Bravura.

Boho chic meets bridal in this Lillian West (style 6522) printed Aztec chiffon gown that feels effervescent, artsy and oh so fashionable. The bloussant bodice and self-tie belt are what give this dress its effortless and almost organic appeal, but it’s the high jewel neckline that represents one of this season’s most readily wearable trends. In the past, high necklines on bridal gowns usually meant traditional cuts and modest silhouettes, but the newest crop of high neck dresses adds a much-needed dash of sex appeal too. To jazz up the simple elegance of this super comfortable dress, our hair and makeup artist used our stylist’s own diamond ball earrings as dreamy hair accents and diamond ball necklace as a bracelet. This gown retails for between $1,500 and $1,999. Lillian West gowns are available at Adore and Bel Fiore.

The combination of traditional lines, lace detailing and the intricate capelet is an utterly glamorous and feminine look that still manages to feel completely natural — it’s a real showstopper! hen Katie met Josh, she felt an immediate connection. “You could say it was love at first sight,” she said. Josh also felt a spark. “I thought she was beautiful and had a great personality,” said Josh, an electrician. “She was funny, full of joy and had a beautiful smile. I loved that she was outgoing and spontaneous, and I wanted to get to know her more.” They went on their first date to The Italian Oven a month later and have been almost inseparable since, bonding over their enjoyment of playing video games, their mutual love for animals and the deep connection they share. “We support each other in whatever the other likes to do,” said Katie, who works at Tatum Steel and is also an artist. “We like a lot of the same stuff, but we are opposites personality-wise. I think that makes us a good match because we balance each other out. Also, we communicate well and confide in each other.” Though he knew for years that Katie was the love of his life, Josh was a little nervous about proposing. “I wanted to marry her for a long time,” he said. “I love her drive and … just the way she is. She’s a good person. She really cares about people. I love her to death.” — more on page 46

He popped the question one day when they were visiting Katie’s parents. “We went outside, and he asked me to come over to look at the flowers my mom had planted, which were near a little altar in the back yard,” Katie said. Then he got down on one knee, pulled out the ring, and asked her to marry him. “I was really surprised,” Katie said. “It was really sweet.” The wedding day was also filled with tender moments. White and light rose flower arrangements by Carithers Flowers adorned Log Cabin Community Church in Vinings, the same church in which Katie’s parents, Diane and Gregory Tatum were married in 1983. “I rely on my mom a lot for advice and she recommended the church. It was perfect; it felt right. I also wore her veil and she gave me a beautiful diamond bracelet for my new item,” Katie said. Diane said seeing her daughter wearing her veil walking down the same aisle she had more than 30 years before was a really special moment. “It was very sentimental,” Diane said. “It brought back memories of our wedding, especially since a lot of the same people were there. It was just a beautiful day.” The day was also sentimental for Katie as her childhood best friends were her bridesmaids. “We all went to the same elementary school in Marietta and have been friends since kindergarten. Now one lives south of Macon, one is in Pennsylvania, and the other is in San Diego. But we have always kept in touch and we’re like ‘The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants,’” she said. The friends caught up during a spa day and sleepover party before the wedding. At the ceremony Katie’s maternal grandmother Elosie Greenlees, a professional pianist, played one of Katie’s favorites, “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and one of Diane’s favorites, “Stardust.” Jennifer Hanson and Del Baroni sang “Because You Loved Me” and “The Prayer.” — continuted on 48

48 Hanson, Baroni and the Ray’s on the River House Band also played the intimate reception, held in Canoe’s outdoor area overlooking the Chattahoochee River. The newlyweds held each other close in their first dance to “Die a Happy Man” by Thomas Rhett, of which the lyrics were revised to “I will live a happy man.” Diane said she was overjoyed to officially welcome Josh into the family. “Katie and Josh are best friends,” she said. “They are great for each other, and you can feel the love between them. People still tell me how touching and beautiful the wedding was. There wasn’t a dry eye in the church.” The wedding toast given by Katie’s dad, Gregory, also was a touching and fitting tribute to their love. “You know their love is more than just sitting and gazing at one another with loving expression,” he said. “Their love instead will be expressed by both Katie and Josh looking outward together in the same direction.” n
Q&A Favorite moment during the ceremony: Katie: It was surreal seeing Josh standing there as I walked down the aisle. I also enjoyed watching my bridesmaids cracking up and laughing at our little jokes. The whole day was just a lot of fun. Josh: When I first saw Katie walk through the doors with the light behind her.
Advice for others who are planning weddings and/or newlyweds: Katie: Don’t get upset if it doesn’t go the way you plan in your idea of a fairytale wedding. Your wedding day is real life, and not a moment you’ll ever get back. I would give the same advice my mom gave me — be patient and just enjoy the day, be in the moment. Josh: Never stop dating. You have to make time for each other.
Favorite moments from the reception: Katie: I loved the speeches from my bridesmaid and Josh’s groomsman, they were really cute. I also loved when the wedding party all walked in as they announced our names. And the bubble ceremony when we left the reception to go on our honeymoon to Cancun was beautiful. Josh: The speeches were great and heartwarming. Best thing about being married: Katie: Being a team is the best thing — we love spending time together and we do everything together. Josh: Having someone to talk to and knowing they are always there for you. I married my best friend.

54 wedding wine
LET’S TOAST!
A quick guide of great wine to serve at your reception By Michael A. Venezia
A
wedding ceremony and celebration is a formal recognition of a union between two adults who are pledging their love and fidelity to each other. Often a toast with a sparkling wine is offered by a chosen member of the wedding party, and on some occasions, the toast is offered by the bride and groom to their families and guests. The toast is sometimes serious, but often humorous. Traditionally, a sparkling wine is the style of wine chosen to fill the glasses which are raised to wish the happy couple health, happiness and prosperity. It’s important to realize that there is a vast price differential between French Champagne and sparkling wine alternatives. Here are some guidelines to help you select the most appropriate wines to offer. Usually, the decision is driven by budgets and how important a priority wine is during the evening’s celebration. The toast is usually a smaller portion, and 2 ounces is the standard. A typical, standard size 750ml bottle of wine will contain 12 portions. One case of 12 bottles will yield servings for 144 people. FRENCH CHAMPAGNE — $$$$ If you wish to impress, pull out all the stops: Champagne Nicolas Feuillatte Rose — Bright salmon in color with the aromas of crushed strawberries. Elegant and full-bodied. Very Dry. CALIFORNIA SPARKLING WINE - $$$ Iron Horse Wedding Cuvee Vintage — Estate produced in the Russian River. Delicate, subtle and vintage dated. Dry. IMPORTED SPARKLING WINE — $$ Avissi Prosecco from Italy — Light golden in color, stylishly approachable. Medium dry and light bodied. Codorniu Cava from Spain — Pale 14k gold color. Medium bodied and dry. DOMESTIC SPARKLING WINE — $ J. Roget or Andre “Champagne” Spumante — These two carbonated wines are fizzy without depth or richness. Simple with a touch of sweetness.
54
These two last selections are sweet in style and are wines that have been artificially carbonated with CO2 gas. Discuss with your caterer whether you can bring your own wine to be served. If so, be prepared to pay a per bottle fee of $10-20. RECEPTION AND DINNER Still wines served to guests at bar stations and at dinner service should be user-friendly and chosen to appeal to the vast majority of consumers. Lighter bodied and more subtle styled wines produced from these familiar varietals will please most guests. Keep in mind to select wines you like because it’s a sharing of the love that the couple wishes to enjoy with their guests. CROWD-PLEASING WHITES AND REDS Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Pinot Grigio, Malbec, Chardonnay, Merlot For a full-bodied red wine, consider a California Cabernet Sauvignon. n

56 counseling
Premarital counseling is a tool couples can use to strenghten their union By LaTria Garnigan Marriage is a beautiful union to enter into. But just like any thing else in life, it takes work and sufficient preparation. And one way to armor yourself and your future spouse is to take part in premarital counseling. It can help to go through all of the things you may face as a married couple with a professional. Mayi Dixon, owner and psychotherapist at Innovative Counseling Solutions & PreMarital Bliss, LLC, Mayi Dixon shares a few tips that engaged couples should keep on the forefront. Just as you take the time to plan out minute details of your big day, make sure to take just as much time to pour into your enhanced relationship.
How can brides/couples take steps to handle stress leading up to the wedding? Couples should plan ahead, delegate duties, and remember that they are in charge of the wedding. Most conflict arises when there are too many “cooks in the kitchen” meaning, that the bride and groom are in charge, not mommy and daddy. This should be a joyous time not agony.
“Design your wedding day. This is not your parents wedding day.” A marriage is a life-changing event — what are some tips to mentally handle this new transition? I believe that every couple should have three to six months of premarital counseling. I would really love for couples to complete counseling before they are engaged. It’s all about planning and changing the mindset from ME to US. This is accomplished through premarital counseling. In your counseling sessions with couples (engaged, newlyweds or already married), what do you stress as being an important aspect of the union? The most important aspect for couples in counseling is to design their marriage. Couples cannot completely focus on the wedding day. This day will come and go in a blink of an eye, and then the difficult work starts to happen. Couples must focus on what marriage will mean to them, identifying important roles and learning to be a union and not a selfish individual.

What are some ways that brides and grooms can help each other and encourage each other through the wedding planning process? Couples can help each other by maintaining clear boundaries with others. When couples allow too many people into their relationship, then conflict happens, especially when planning a wedding. Many people will want to offer unsolicited advice. Couples should refrain from soliciting advice from a large number of people. Couples must be understanding and supportive to their partners needs, emotions and capabilities. What is the importance of engaged couples seeking some counseling during the wedding planning process? Couples can learn communication and conflict resolution skills while planning a wedding. This is the perfect opportunity for couples to navigate a real life stressful situation and learn to work together and not tear each other down. n
