MARIETTA DAILY JOURNAL â—? MAY 1, 2016
M
ay 24 is a big day for candidates seeking political office and an even bigger day for aspiring judges and clerks: The Republican and Democratic parties will hold general primaries to select nominees for the November general election, and judicial seats will be elected in a nonpartisan general election. The winners of the party primaries will have their names on the ballot on November 8. They could also face challenges then from independent and write-in candidates, who can qualify in June. Both Democrats and Republicans in Georgia hold open primaries, meaning voters do not have to be registered with either party to vote for that party’s candidates. Early voting starts May 2 at one location and expands to six locations on May 16. Voters do not have to give a reason for voting early. The locations for early voting are as follows:
May 2 - May 13: Main elections office 736 Whitlock Ave. Marietta 30064-4663 Mon-Fri 8am-5pm
May 14: Main elections office 736 Whitlock Ave. Marietta 30064-4663 Sat 9am-4pm

Why are you running for office? I don’t take your vote lightly, and I hope to continue to work effectively as your representative. During my time in elected office, I have never voted for a tax increase. Not once. I have actively worked for fundamental tax reform and an overhaul of our broken tax code. I have fought against over-burdensome government regulations that are hurting American families and businesses. I have fought to reform our broken federal budget process and overhaul the way Washington does business. I’ve authored legislation to move to a two-year budget system that would force elected officials to become more accountable to the taxpayers, reduce spending and increase oversight. I have voted more than 60 times to overturn Obamacare. This law is a disaster, and we must replace it with a free-market solution that makes healthcare truly affordable and accessible to all Americans. I was among the first to recognize the threat posed by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, known as ISIL, and I will not stop until we get serious about eliminating those who support and carry out radical Islamic terrorism.
Why are you running for office? I have been reading the state and federal legislation for years. I am making good on a promise I made to run against the incumbent if he voted for the new education bill, because it uses federal bribe money to dictate what is taught and tested in schools. I am pro-life. I will work to keep the government out of the churches and support the freedoms found in the Bill of Rights. I have a record of keeping my promises and voting no, even when I have been the only one. Federal legislation such as the education bill, workforce bill and the “Affordable Care” Act are similar and inter-connected. Through these laws, the federal government seeks to control healthcare, workforce, education and so much more. WE THE PEOPLE need to reverse course and repeal freedom killing legislation. When I am elected, I will continue to read the bills, inform the people, and vote against any bill that is not in line with the Constitution. I will also work to repeal harmful legislation that has passed in recent years. I will represent the people of Georgia. I will be the U.S. Senator I would like to have.
Why are you running for office? Constitutionalists are needed now, more than ever. I have never held public office. However, my current bid is because I have come to realize that our Constitution is being violated each and every day, at all levels of government. It must be stopped and the People have the power to do it. What makes me different as a candidate is I actually believe in the Original Intent of the Constitution, The Bill of Rights and Limited Government. Moreover, I am UnBought by special interest and UnBossed by establishment Republicans (The Royals). I believe the power belongs to the PEOPLE and it is their duty to purge those in D.C. that infringe upon their Liberties and Freedoms. Simply put, America needs men and women willing stand for what’s right and to expose the corrupt. I will absolutely do that. The American people, armed with the proper knowledge, will do what’s right when it’s exposed. My commitment is to 100% of the Constitution, 100% of the time!

Vision statement (taken from campaign website): Georgians must stand up for what is right. Christian values should prevail. The government must implement policies that Why are you running for office? promote strong marriages, families and Everyone asks why a candidate is running. All of country. We need to preserve the rights them seem to answer that they want to change Washington politics and the for each child to receive a good education and not be saddled with way that Congress works. I want to set term limits at twelve (12) years so enormous debt after completing college. We should be offering a free the people elected will do their job and go home. They serve the people, undergraduate education to all Americans. We can’t afford to send not themselves. I have a detailed plan for my agenda. When I become another rich businessman to Washington to make laws that burden Georgia’s next Senator, most importantly I would require the payment for the citizens of Georgia and protect his business interest instead of all permanent workers of $15 per hour, or $31,200 a year. All workers the people. You need someone that is committed to serving you. I should be full-time. This is the start of a living wage program and all earn- am a life-long Christian, mother, a widow, corporate manager and a ers would pay a 10% tax after a $4,000 individual deduction, or $2,700 champion of the underdog. I was born in Georgia, went to college in to the federal government. I will expand Medicare and Medicaid with an Georgia, raised my family in Georgia, and work in Georgia. I’m the employer/employee funded plan overseen by a federal/state healthcare best candidate to represent Georgia in the U.S. Senate. board that follows the same guidelines as Medicare where the cost of managing the program is less than 4%. 96% would go to pay for services to the patient.
Vision statement (taken from campaign website): I am not a politician. But I’ve learned the importance of standing firm when things don’t make sense, so I feel I have a responsibility to do something today. Regardless of one’s ideology, we can all agree the irresponsible and reckless policies from Washington have gone on too long. Businesses can’t grow when incomes are declining from lack of high-paying jobs, and neither can families. Firms that don’t invest in people tend to be firms that stop growing, and I see this happening in America today. Meanwhile, to compensate for poor policies, the Federal Reserve creates money to artificially keep interest rates low. This has created another financial bubble where those with money (except seniors living on their savings) get richer, while workers and students face limited opportunities. Even worse, neither our companies nor our government are prepared for the costs society will bear when interest rates return to historically normal levels. So, as bad as things seem today, they may get worse before they get better. It is time we changed course, and that is why I am in this campaign.

Occupation: Businessman Family: Billie, wife; three adult children, five grandchildren Residence: Kennesaw Campaign website: billydavis.com Public email address: bdavis@billydavis.com Vision statement (taken from campaign website): Billy cannot be bought. He is financing his own campaign, the only people who can influence his vote are the people of this district. As a representative, he will bring your voice to DC and not the other way around. Billy is fed up with candidates who run for Congress and call themselves “public servants.” Someone should not have to be paid nearly $200,000/year to be a public servant. For this reason, Billy will donate 100% of his Congressional salary to charity. It’s time to bring jobs back to America. Due to our poor trade laws, we have pushed many great industries overseas. While we are the most generous nation on earth, we need to spend more time taking care of American citizens rather than foreign interests.
Why are you running for office? I am running for Congress to change the status-quo in Washington, end the era of governing crisis-by-crisis, cut wasteful spending, prioritize national security, and address our growing debt. In just over one year in Congress, we have made significant progress in achieving these goals. ‘Freedom Works’ recently called me “the best of the next generation of freedom fighters,” for my persistent work to bring new leadership to the House and change the status-quo. With new leadership, we are working to restore sanity to the budgeting process and put Congress — not the President — back in charge of the budget as the Constitution calls for. I have aggressively fought to cut wasteful spending and overregulation and, last month, ‘Citizens Against Government Waste’ named me a “Taxpayer Super Hero,” and ranked me the “most effective” member of Congress in cutting government waste. I thank you for the trust you have placed in me, and ask for your vote on May 24, so I can continue to stand firm for you in Congress; because, we must leave our children an America that is free, safe, and full of opportunity.

After a lifetime of service and watching my representation, my children, my veterans and supporting an education system that has cost me and my family opportunity, I felt the need to provide an option for positive leadership so we can begin again respecting those that we elect.
Daniel Cowan (R) Age: 39 Occupation: Self employed strategy consultant Residence: Kennesaw (unincorporated Cobb) Education: Undergraduate, International Business, Davidson College; MBA, Duke University Campaign website: cowanforcongress.com Public email address: info@cowanforcongress.com
Why are you running for office? I am running because it’s clear that the career politicians are failing us. They promise change, but deliver more of the same. I have built a career out of getting results in the business world. I’ll do the same in Washington for the American People. I am running because I believe that the voices of the 11th District should be listened to and our needs addressed.
William Llop (R) Age: 57 Occupation: CPA - J.W.Llop, CPA, PC Family: MaryLynn Crichton Llop, two children Residence: Sandy Springs Education: Mercer University BBA Campaign website: williamllopcpaforcongress.com Public email address: williamllopcpaforcongress@gmail.com Why are you running for office? For over 30 years, I have been helping people. Every morning I go to work and help you, the people that go to work every day, with solutions to the business and financial challenges in life. My problem and your problem are the same: How do we pay our mortgage? Put groceries on the table? Send our kids to school? Save money and pay for our homes? I want to build the equity in our investments, in this Great Country of ours. I want to continue to help on a larger scale. I believe I am the best candidate to represent the 11th District. I have spent my entire career preparing for this position. As a local CPA, I have spent over 30 years advising and serving the people of the 11th District. I have a clear understanding of what has changed and what people in our district want. I would be honored to continue serving you in Washington.
Don Wilson (D) (U) Age: 58 Occupation: Investment Banker Family: Wife Rose Wilson, two children, Franchessa & Marcus Residence: Marietta Education: Veteran (Army) Campaign website: www.facebook.com/ DonWilsonforCongress Public email address: don.e.wilson@gmail. com Why are you running for office? Over the past several years I’ve served as the DPG 11th Congressional Chairman. During the past two election cycles, I’ve been asked several questions from consistency; with the primary item being when will we have someone who will protect our Seniors, help our veterans, grow small businesses and preserve the public safety net. None of these are new for me, and my list is even longer in preserving the dream of Home Ownership, and living wage for adults.

I am running for re-election for the same reasons I ran for election to the State Senate the first time. I was inspired to run while serving in Afghanistan as an Infantry Officer in the United States Army. I realized that America would rise or fall of our own doing, not of a foreign enemy or threat. I believed we were headed in the wrong direction, and I wanted to do something about it. I ran to
Jaha Howard (D)(U) challenge the status quo. After four years in office, believe me, it is not easy. I want to continue to serve my community as a leader who focuses on solutions to our key challenges. In the Senate, I have championed positive reform efforts for education, transportation funding, business law, construction procurement, tax reduction, welfare reform, veterans and intergovernmental reform. I have been effective, having almost 30 bills signed into law by the Governor. I will continue to push for reform in education, taxes, and spending (budget). I want to continue to be a leader inside government that brings an outsider’s perspective. We are divided as a nation, and we will need strong leaders to bring us together and move us in the right direction. This continues to be my goal.

I believe it’s important to be involved in the community. A result of our engagement is that we become aware of the challenges around us. When I encounter an issue, I like to work with people that have the knowledge, experience and passion to help find the best solutions; inaction
is not an option. For example, five years ago, families wanted more from their dental practice — more connection, less stress, happier children. So I started a practice that, through authenticity and creativity, connected to the community through fun events, interactive social media, and more quality patient-doctor time. Three years ago, parents expressed concerns about our neighborhood schools, so I founded Wave of Excellence, a massive network of parents that has helped to positively transform our schools. Why politics? I share in the frustration and disgust with the political machine and its disconnected lawmakers. Politically moderate and reasonable Georgians feel completely left out of the process. I plan to make sure their voices are heard. I will listen carefully to different perspectives and value each point of view. This is the only way to ensure that Our Georgia becomes stronger.

Why are you running for office? I am running for re-election to continue the work of fighting for the working families. I have been and will continue to work for Georgia families to receive paid leave, equal pay, access to affordable healthcare. I also think that it is important to restore the HOPE scholarship and grant. Other important issues include women’s reproductive rights, non-discrimination laws, early voting, low property taxes and quality education. Also, I will continue to work to improve health care for our children, support Medicaid expansion and universal Pre-K, and expand opportunities for small businesses. I will continue to fight legislation that allows the governor’s office to take over our public school and the judicial watchdog.
Why are you running for office? I have stood by long enough watching my District languish in promises by politicians who only show up during elections. I have always been a good citizen and I do believe that it is time for citizens such as myself to stand up for the values of this great state. While I don’t have answers for every problem in District 38, I do know how to surround myself around like thinking, dedicated people who can and will turn District 38 and the state of Georgia around. In addition, I am seeking office because I want to make life better for our young people and to make a difference in education and the school systems. I believe and know we can do better. Middle school teachers are forced to give students 50% or higher for basically writing their name on their paper. Students are given grades all the way through middle school and dropout before they complete their second year of high school. It is time to fix education.

Two years ago I was elected to be the State Representative of the community where I was born and raised. I campaigned on the promise to represent the values of this community and to bring forth good, common sense legislation that is important to Cobb County. I have kept those promises and as a freshman I made a significant impact on our state government by working hard on efforts such as HB 874, my anti-criminal street gang bill, which passed the General Assembly this year and will help in cracking down on the massive issue of gang violence in our state. I am humbly asking for the opportunity to continue serving our community, and I make the same promises to my constituents.

I am running because this community is not adequately represented. Most people in Kennesaw don’t even know who their representative is - and I want to change that. If citizens don’t know who is representing them, then their representatives tend to put partisan politics ahead of progress that helps all Georgians. That’s why my campaign motto is Progress, Not Politics - because I want to help make Georgia a better place for all of us and won’t let partisan politics get in the way.

Why are you running for office? Since November 2014, I have humbly, effectively served the residents of State House District 39. I know first-hand that it is not enough to fix our schools if there are no jobs after graduation. It is not enough to create jobs without having transportation to get people to those jobs. These are real issues across our state; and especially in South Cobb County. I am the only candidate with experience standing up against Republicans to improve our quality-of-life in the South Cobb community, and I look forward to the opportunity to continue to stand up for our values at the State Capitol.
GEORGIA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES — DISTRICT 37
Why are you running for office? I am running because 39th District needs a strong leader in the House of Representatives advocating on issues that impact our community. I have been an active voice advocating on issues that impact our community and quality of life, including our work to defeat the Bankhead “TRASH” Transfer Station. I founded a grass roots organization, gathered community opposition, worked closely with the Mableton Improvement Coalition, and convinced commissioners to vote down the proposal. My experiences from working on campaigns and in political offices on the local, state and nation level benefited our community in defeating this noxious usage from impacting our quality of life. With my political experience and my passion and advocacy for our community, I will take these same qualities to the House of Representatives for District 39.
Why are you running for office? Because the public needs to know we have a wealth of life experience we can draw upon if needed. I have the experience and foresight to engage the community and bring about necessary change. I won’t just sit there, bring no legislation when its clear change is needed, and waste taxpayer time and money. We deserve better, so we will do better.

Our nation’s founding document, the Declaration of Independence, lays out the vision of the American experiment: the fundamental role of Government is to protect the rights and freedoms that the Creator has granted the individual. As a nation, we value self-government. We grow concerned when government micro-manages our lives. That is why I serve in elected office and why I hope to continue serving - to propose and support policies that lead to greater economic freedom and reduce government’s involvement in our daily lives. We must remain focused on maintaining and growing the reputation that Georgia, and specifically Cobb County, is a place where individual freedoms are protected and job creators have an environment where they can be successful.

Why are you running for office? I am running for re-election as State Representative in the Democratic Primary on May 24 so I can continue to work on behalf of the families in my district. This term I successfully introduced and passed HB 177, child safety legislation that requires the Division of Family and Children Services to report back to our school counselors within five days after resolving a reported case of suspected child abuse. Supported by school counselors, the legislation has improved reporting between the state and schools in cases of suspected child abuse. My 529 college savings plan legislation, which provides a matching grant to middle class families to help pay for college cleared the House Higher Education Committee. Next session I intend to reintroduce the bill and obtain its final passage. I continue to keep the community informed by holding town hall meetings which allow residents to hear the issues being debated at the Capitol. The cookouts I hold throughout the year provide an opportunity for people to meet their neighbors and share concerns in a casual environment. It has been an honor to serve the last six years and I want to continue to be a voice for the community I represent.
As a 15-year member of Shaw Temple AME Zion Church and her involvement with 25 non-profit community organizations, Taylor is more than a long-time neighbor she is a staple of District 38. Taylor’s has a wealth of experience as a former member of the Cobb County Board of Tax Assessors, as a governmental grants compliance director, and as a successful real estate broker. Connie has managed projects with budgets over $100 Million utilizing her knowledge of the public and private sectors. Cobb County embraces Connie as a tireless advocate for her community through her committed service while serving on the SPLOST Oversight Committee, Cobb County Parks Bond Advisory Committee and a Board Member of the Arthur Langford Jr., Teen Leadership.

Georgia State University Public email address: Rich.Golick@house.ga.gov Why are you running for office? I’m running to ensure that the communities I represent continue to have a common sense, conservative voice in the State House. What does that mean? It means that I will continue to be a strong voice for a lower tax burden, schools that are safe and deliver value to students and parents, a tough but fair criminal justice system that has become a model for the nation by focusing on rehabilitating low level nonviolent offenders while ensuring that violent criminals are locked away, and, fiscal policy that will continue to attract employers big and small to Georgia resulting in job creation. On the local level, I am committed to ensuring that our local schools have what they need to meet the demands of increasing enrollment in the next several years. That is, it is important to act now in order to ensure that our local schools have what they need in the future in terms of technology, facilities, and any other education-related need. I am committed to working with local school leaders toward that goal for the balance of this year and into the next term.

I was formally a Director for the Dept. of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities, where I saw first hand how our legislature can make progress very difficult for everyone in our state, especially the vulnerable. If elected I will be the only legislator, to my knowledge, that has worked as a Leader in one of our states largest agencies, giving me this unique insight and experience needed to create and implement change. As a representative I will collaboratively work to build a strong economic environment where both business and families thrive, fight to ensure every child gets a quality education, and press for all Georgians to have access to quality healthcare. Most importantly, I want a Georgia that works for all, and not just the privileged.

Why are you running for office? As Chairman of the Health and Human Services Committee in the Georgia House I have the unique opportunity to help improve the health of all Georgians, and I would like to continue that work. For example, two of Georgia and Cobb’s most serious problems are elder abuse and opioid addiction. Working with Cobb’s Elder Abuse Task Force I have passed legislation making it easier for law enforcement to close and successfully prosecute owners and staff that run illegal personal care homes. Homes often tucked away in nice neighborhoods, but in which our most vulnerable citizens receive inhumane treatment and live in unbelievable squalor. I also passed legislation allowing first responders (police officers, firemen and EMT’S) to administer Naloxone, a life-saving antidote in opioid overdose situations. In just two years over 500 lives have already been saved in Georgia. These are just two examples of how I have worked to improve the health and safety of Georgia citizens. Out of 236 legislators there are only 3 Representatives and 3 Senators, including myself, that have medical backgrounds along with actual hands-on patient care experience. Such knowledge is extremely valuable when trying to craft good health care policy for our state.
Why are you running for office? I’m running for office to bring leadership to difficult decisions. During the most difficult economy in our lifetime, we’ve raised the gas tax, the hotel tax, the hospital bed tax, healthcare costs have skyrocketed and we’ve increased the administrative and regulatory burden on businesses, individuals and families. We have failed to lead on issues such as Highway and Transportation SAFETY, tax reform, and civil rights. Our current office holder has never met a tax or a regulation she doesn’t like. During Sharon Cooper’s term in office, Georgia has implemented historical amounts of taxes, regulations, regulatory fees, license fees and other regulations. Consider for a moment the impact the requiring Semi-Trucks to have Collision Avoidance Systems? The impact on our citizens, families, hospital costs, quality of life and highway cost would ALL be positively impacted. Consider the hotel tax and the impact it has had on families and individuals living in the hotels. Ms. Cooper’s failure to lead has negatively impacted the less fortunate while benefiting special interests. Perhaps that is why she has amassed one of the largest campaign coffers of any politician in the state.

I have been proud to serve as Cobb’s Superior Court Judge for the past six years with responsibility for over 1,700 new cases each year that impact the lives of Cobb citizens. During my tenure I have reduced the courtroom caseload from 3,000 to 750. Over 60% of the cases I hear are civil matters so a reduced case load ensures quicker access to court and more timely resolution to business and family matters. As the only judge on the Cobb Superior Court that has served in active duty military, I am especially proud that we started Veterans Court. Every week I have the honor of presiding over a transformation, watching veterans who have honorably served our country move from defeat and hopelessness to pride and purpose. I hope to continue to make a positive contribution to the Cobb community for another four years.

In addition, I have been working with the County on plans to build out the fourth and fifth floor of the Courthouse. Why are you running for office? I am running because my entire career and life have been in preparation for this opportunity. I have been in service to others throughout the majority of my 25-year legal career, and would be honored to serve the citizens of Cobb County as the next State Court Judge of Division 1, Post 3. I have served as a criminal prosecutor, a criminal defense attorney, an attorney in civil practice, an adjunct law professor. I am a certified mediator and have trained attorneys and law enforcement officers throughout the state. I am uniquely qualified and possess the relevant criminal and civil experience necessary to serve the citizens as a competent and neutral judge. My background has provided me the necessary knowledge and confidence to be fair and impartial. It is my desire to preside over a court that is run with personal and professional integrity; one that is effective and efficient and where all individuals will be treated with respect. If elected, I would work hard to do the right thing based upon the individual facts, circumstances and applicable laws for each case. I will draw upon my varied background to exercise my judicial discretion to impose appropriate sentences in the cases that come before me.
Why are you running for office? There is no better place to succeed economically or to live safely than Cobb. Our courts play a key role in ensuring that Cobb remains a great place to raise a family and to do business. On May 24, we are placing 3 new judges on our State Court bench and I want to ensure that one of those openings is filled with someone who has the experience to protect our finances, families, and Constitution. I know how to protect our finances: I represent individuals and companies of all sizes in Cobb and across the nation in the day-to-day matters that affect their livelihoods to the most complex business disputes of our day where tens of millions of dollars are at stake. I know how to protect our families: I have dedicated my personal time to providing free representation to survivors of domestic violence and their children who could not otherwise afford a lawyer. I know how to protect our Constitution: I am a student of the Constitution having earned a degree in Constitutional Democracy, published a much-cited scholarly article on state and federal constitutional issues, and built part of my professional practice on upholding the First Amendment.
Why are you running for office? I have practiced law for many years, and have always wanted to serve as a Judge. I clerked for the late Cobb State Court Judge Harris Adams, and would be honored to use my many years of varied legal experience to serve the people of our community as Cobb State Court Judge.

Since 1997, I have presided as a substitute judge in Cobb State Court and the City of Marietta. Additionally, I sit as an Associate Municipal Court Judge in the City of Powder Springs and as a Cobb Juvenile Court Judge on a monthly basis. This breadth of experience affords me the singular distinction of being the only candidate with the experience of prosecuting, practicing, and actually sitting as a judge ALL in Cobb State Court. I am also honored and humbled to be the only candidate seeking to succeed the Honorable Irma Glover (my former judge as I was the first prosecutor assigned to her courtroom when she took the bench in 1995) in Cobb State Court to have received the endorsement of both your current elected Solicitor General, Barry Morgan, and the Fraternal Order of Police.

I hope to transition my work ethic, my commitment to excellence, and my years of experience as a lawyer and Magistrate Judge into a higher level of service. Specifically, I think we need strong and decisive judges to manage the impact of Cobb County’s growth on our court system; I am concerned about the inefficient and expensive manner in which many of our courts are operated; I believe that we need judges free from personal agenda or professional allegiance; I have grown frustrated with inconsistent court rulings that seemingly depend on which lawyer the litigant has hired is as opposed to the evidence presented. I believe judges should make rulings based on the law- not on public opinion, personal preference or agenda. A judge needs to be strong, but respectful; decisive, but thorough. I firmly believe that courts should apply the law- not make it. This application should be uncompromised and transparent.

2016 COBB VOTERS GUIDE COBB BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
Tim Lee (R) (I) Age: 58 Occupation: Cobb Commission Chairman Family: Married to Annette for 27 years and are the proud parents of 3 children and 5 grandchildren Education: HS; Studied Economics at Fordham University Campaign website: leeforcobb.com Public email address: tim@leeforcobb.com Why are you running? As Chairman, I have provided the serious leadership necessary to see Cobb through the Great Recession. When revenues were plummeting, I worked to eliminate waste in government to balance the budget and maintain the services our citizens expect. Since that time, we have implemented a public safety improvement plan that added 80 new police officers and enhanced pay structure to attract and retain the best in the public safety business. I have proposed and passed 5 balanced budgets and we have cut taxes 3 times in 3 years. The water fund transfer is the lowest it has been in a decade. I have made the bold decisions necessary to sustain Cobb through the hard times and that have helped to make Cobb a leader in economic growth.
Larry Savage
(CHAIRMAN) (R)
Age: 72 Occupation: Retired. Last employment was Henkel Corp., Manager, LIS Business Unit Family: Single Residence: East Cobb Education: BME (Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering), General Motors Institute, 1967 (now Kettering University, MBA (Master of Business Administration). Georgia State University, 1970 Campaign website: SavageForChairman.org Public email: Savage.larry044@gmail.com Why are you running for office? I had not expected to run for office. However, my work in recent years on county affairs had convinced me that Cobb County needed some significant changes in areas of policy, practice, and procedure. Whether by design or by neglect, the county has become very opaque from the outside and it is very difficult for a citizen to understand the county government. Add to this the dilemma left by the stadium bond financing and it was clear that there is an unacceptable risk to taxpayers that needs to be corrected. I hoped someone fresh would enter with the skills and commitment to make needed changes but that did not happen, so I again became a candidate. My intent is to revise, update, modernize or otherwise open up the county’s business so that a reasonably motivated citizen can watch the government work and understand it and can be assured that all is well. I think it is important that control of debt be restored so that voters and taxpayers will not be at risk as they are now for runaway debt that might be incurred by Commissioners.
Mike Boyce (R) Age: 66 Occupation: Colonel, U.S. Marine Corps (Retired) Family: Judy, spouse; three children, Alison, Kevin, Sean; 4 Grandchildren Residence: Marietta Education: University of Notre Dame, Bachelor of Arts; Pepperdine University, Master of Arts; Marine Corps Command and Staff College; Naval War College Campaign website: likemike4cobb.com Public email: likemike4cobb@gmail.com Why are you running for office? I served in uniform for nearly 30 years defending representational government as envisioned by our Founding Fathers. I believe that our voices in Cobb County are being increasingly shut out or ignored. The most obvious example of this is the deal for SunTrust Stadium. If we are allowed to vote on two $40 million park bonds, then it follows we should have been permitted to vote on a $350 million stadium deal. I am an experienced leader who is committed to leading with trust and integrity and an open and transparent government where all voices are heard.
DISTRICT 2
Bob Ott (R) (I) Age: 59 Occupation: A-330 International Pilot, Delta Air Lines, Inc./District 2 County Commissioner Family: Judy, wife; two children, Katie, 18, and Chris, 16 Residence: Marietta Education: Bucknell University, BA Biology; University of Southern California, MS Systems Management Campaign website: bob4cobb.com Public email: bob.ott@cobbcounty.org Why are you running for office? I feel great satisfaction from helping resolve issues facing homeowners, individual citizens and the community at-large. It is important that the government take care of the big issues in any community, but especially in a county the size and complexity of Cobb. It is equally important that, as you address the big issues, the interests and needs of the individual homeowner, business person or average citizen are not overlooked. I want to do what I can to ensure that Cobb remains a strong, vibrant, attractive and well-managed community and continues its legacy of honest, open and responsive government. I want Cobb to continue to be a place that individuals and families want to move to to work and raise their children. By taking care of the big things, without overlooking the day-to-day things future generations can enjoy the same benefits of living here that my family has. I think of these things often as I make decisions and cast votes that affect the community. These things, along with helping constituents successfully navigate the maze of county government, are what motivates me to serve my community.
Jonathan Page (R) Age: 34 Occupation: Managing Attorney, Page Law, LLC Family: Mariana; four sons, Ryan, 15, Harry, 7, Jonathan, Jr., 4, and William, 3 Residence: Marietta Education: Young Harris College, A.S.; Georgia Institute of Technology, B.S. with a concentration in Mathematics; Georgia State University School of Law, J.D. Campaign website: Pageforcobb.com Public email: jonathan@pageforcobb.com. Why are you running for office? I want Cobb County and District 2 to be a place where my four boys, after graduating from college, will want to return to get a job, raise a family or start a business. By serving as county commissioner and providing effective and consistent leadership, I believe I can facilitate constructive solutions that advance the priorities of our community – low taxes, reducing traffic congestion, safer communities and more parks and greenspace. In short, I want to make a positive and lasting difference in our community through public service.

Neil Warren
(R) (I) (U)
Age: 69 Occupation: Sheriff, Cobb County, Georgia Family: Penny Warren, wife; two adult daughters. Residence: West Cobb Education: Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Brenau College; Graduate of the FBI National Academy and GBI Investigators Academy Campaign website: facebook.com/neil. warren.58 Public email address: neilwarren@bellsouth.net Why are you running for office? Serving Cobb County as a law enforcement officer since 1977, I have been involved on a daily basis with serving our growing residential population and expanding business community. This growth, although largely positive, also presents some significant challenges to providing a safe environment for our community. As Sheriff, I want to continue to encourage partnerships with surrounding law enforcement agencies, maintain a highly effective level of law enforcement services and to continue partnering with our schools and courts to prevent crime through youth education programs.
Gregory Gilstrap (D) (U)
COBB BOARD OF EDUCATION POST 3
David Morgan (D) (I)
Albert McRae (D)
Age: 44 Occupation: Cobb Board of Education member since 2009 and American Federation for Children lobbyist Family: Two children: Rashaan Khalil and Lailah Camille Residence: Austell Education: Grambling State University in 1993 (Undergraduate) and Clark Atlanta University in 1996 (Master of Arts) Campaign website: No Public Email Address: DMorganforschools@gmail.com
Age: 43 Occupation: Non-Profit Business Consultant Family: Single Residence: Mableton Education: B.A, Mechanical Engineering Technology, University of Southern Mississippi Campaign website: AlbertMcrae.com Public email address: info@AlbertMcrae. com
Why are you running for office? Morgan wants to retain his school board seat to continue to represent the students and constituents in South Cobb and to ensure all students have the best opportunities for learning. He said he would like to focus on three things during his next term if elected: have a strong, robust pre-kindergarten program; continue to compensate teachers and principals who are effective and make sure Cobb County schools continue to customize curriculum to prepare children for a global economy.
Why are you running for office? I’m running to build a better and brighter future for South Cobb’s students, teachers, and the communities that support them. For the last 20 years, I have been dedicated to advocating for our schools and students and now, I hope to take it to the next level as a member of the School Board. Our campaign is about building a new sense of shared responsibility that encourages parents, educators, and community members to collectively and collaboratively work to create an enriched experience for our kids. South Cobb deserves a school board member who they can trust to place the needs of our students first. We need a board member who understands the needs of our district, and will represent our schools with distinction. I am proud to answer the call to service.
Age: 53 Occupation: Lieutenant, Morehouse College Police Department Family: Janie, spouse; three children Residence: Austell Education: Atlanta Area Tech School Public email address: GregoryGilstrap@ bellsouth.net Why are you running for office? I believe as Sheriff of Cobb County, I can make a difference as a public servant in combating crime by bridging the gap between law enforcement and citizens that we serve and protect. The crime rate is increasing and public trust with law enforcement is declining. We need to restore the trust and build relationships in order to impact our community. I believe that I have the training and skills needed to build these trusting and collaborative relationships with the citizens of Cobb County and surrounding municipalities.
