FROM THE EDITOR The time of year when wedding planning comes to the forefront is such a beautiful space in which to be. Seeing couples who are in love take that step toward matrimony is truly inspiring. Planning for the ‘Big Day’ involves so much and with each issue of Brides, we try to ease that process. From choosing a dress, top designs in rings, photography tips and cake — we’ve got you covered. Our fashion writer Meredith Pruden has chosen a stunning collection of bridal gowns — even a suit makes an appearance — for 2016. Also inside, we’ll take a glimpse into the romance of two local newlywed couples; we’ll dazzle you with some sparkly jewelry; get noteworthy photography tips from the pros; learn how to pull off a top tier wedding through barter and last but not least, we’ll hear from industry experts David Tutera and Buddy Valastro
on wedding planning and the all-important cake. Marietta-based therapist Dr. Tequilla Hill will give brides and grooms-to-be advice on ways to deal with wedding planning stress and upcoming life changes. We would like to extend a very special thanks to the Marietta Educational Garden Center for hosting our cover and bridal gowns shoot. The day also would not have been complete without our beautiful model and Marietta resident Florina Guraliuc, hair/makeup artist Maria Rigney of Dyer & Posta Salon in Kennesaw, jewelry by Diamonds R Forever in Kennesaw and flowers by Gail’s Florist in Canton. We hope you enjoy this issue and are able to take away from it some useful information, whether it’s needed now or saved for the future. With gratitude,

You’ve got too many dreams left undone. Too many special moments waiting to be experienced. Life is too short to let pain slow you down. Yet for many, severe back pain and sciatica puts a halt to any enjoyment in life. Maybe you can’t play golf like you used to. Or you’re not able to enjoy that cruise like you should. Sciatica and back pain are NOT “just a part of life” and something you have to live with. In fact, many former back pain sufferers are now pain free after using a new drugless, painless treatment. This new therapy is called non-surgical disc decompression, and it is helping to keep people from having to ‘go under the knife’.
Medical Proof This Treatment Works While non-surgical spinal decompression is a rather new treatment, there’s plenty of research to back up its claims. Here’s just entific studies... The conditions this amazing treatment has proven successful for: • Herniated discs • Degenerative disc disease • Back pain • Neck pain • Sciatica • Facet syndromes “We thus submit that decompression therapy should be considered first, before the patient undergoes a surgical procedure which permanently alters the anatomy and function of the affected lumbar spine segment.” - Journal of Neuroscience Research “86% of the 219 patients who completed the therapy reported immediate resolution of symptoms” - Orthopedic Technolgy Review “vertebral axial [spinal] decompression was successful in 71% of the 778 cases” - Journal of Neurological Research “good to excellent” relief in 86% patients with Herniated discs” - The American Journal of Pain Management “decompression therapy reported a 76.5% with complete remission and 19.6% with partial remission of pain and disability” - Rio Grande Hospital, Department of Neuro-surgery
Brides 2016 (7) 7
As you can see, spinal decompression has a high success rate with helping disc herniations and back pain. What this means for you is that in just a matter of weeks, you could be back on the golf course, enjoying your love life, or traveling again. I am running a speical offer where you will find out if you are a candidate for spinal decompression. It’s time for you to find out if spinal decompression will be your back pain and sciatica solution. My name is Dr. Amy Valente, owner of North Cobb Spine & Nerve Institute. I understand what it feels like to live in pain, because I see it every day. I’ve seen hundreds of people with disc herniations, back problems and sciatica, which were once told surgery was the only option, leave the office pain free. What dose this offer include? Everything I normally do in my new patient evaluation. You’ll get... • A complete neuromuscular examination. • A full set of specialized x-rays (if clinically necessary) to determine if a spinal problem is contributing to your pain or symptoms... (NOTE: These would normally cost you at least $100). • A thorough analysis of your exam and x-ray findings so we can start mapping out your plan to being pain free. • You’ll get to see everything first hand. I’ll answer all your questions about spinal decompression. I’ll let you know if this amazing treatment will be your back pain solution, like it has for so many other patients. And the best part about it is....
No Dangerous Drugs, No Invasive Procedures, and No Painful Exercises. Spinal decompression treatments are very gentle. In fact, every once and a awhile I even catch a patient sleeping during sessions. You’ll simply lie on your back and then a specialized belt is gently placed around your waist. We’ll set the machine to focus on your problem area then the advanced computer system will do the rest.
Here’s what our patients have to say: Low back pain with Sciatica I have suffered with low back pain for over 2 years. Prior to coming to NCS&N I tried physical therapy, another chiropractor & pain medication but nothing worked. The doctors here listen to me & they are very thorough. I already feel 80% better and I’m only half way through my care. The decompression therapy is really working. Unexpected improvements have helped me to be a lot more mobile and I sleep better at night. It really works and the staff here is great! Thank you, Ellen Castellana
I started at North Cobb Spine & Nerve Institute for pain in my lower back that traveled down my right leg. The pain felt like a burning sensation down my leg and numbness into my toes. I was unable to walk my normal 5 miles. Since starting the spinal decompression therapy I am now able to walk again without any pain. The pain and numbness down my right leg is completely alleviated. I was surprised to find that I am even sleeping better at night and that the tension in my upper back has also been relieved. The staff here has treated my great and is very caring! Thanks -Bill Norman The normal price for this type of evaluation, including x-rays, is $250 so you’re saving a considerable amount by taking me up on this offer. Call today and for a $20 fee we can get you scheduled for your consultation, exam and x-rays as soon as there’s an opening.
Sincerely, Dr. Amy Valente P.S. What Will Your Pain Feel Like One Month From Today? One of the biggest myths about pain is that it goes away all by itself, without any treatment. A May 1998 study in the British Medical Journal proved this myth false, showing that 75% of back pain sufferers who do nothing about it will have either pain or disability 12 months later. If you’ve been having pain for awhile, it’s probably not going to get better on its own. Life’s too short to live in pain like this. Call today and soon I’ll be giving you the green light to have fun again.

t didn’t take long for Bobby and Briana Thomas to realize they were meant to be together — it only took a few dates. Bobby just happened to know slightly before Briana though. Bobby is the co-owner of Red Hare Brewery in Marietta, which is how he met his wife. “She came up and asked for a tour for her and her mom,” he said. “I gave her a tour and — I’ll never forget — at the end of the tour she gave me a kiss on the cheek and I thought, ‘Whoa, who is this?’”

Bobby couldn’t shake his interest in finding out more about Briana, so he asked a mutual friend to get them in touch. Briana called him two weeks later after the brewery tour and they went to see a performance by local band Ruby Velle & the Soulphonics. “We met up and danced the night away,” Bobby said. “After that, we went out on a couple of dates and we knew we were really good for each other.” As spring and summer approached in 2014, both knew that they wanted to get married. In fact, the two went scouting for engagement rings so Bobby could get an idea of the style Briana liked. Bobby said he thinks Briana was expecting a proposal on her birthday in April. She had convinced Bobby, who is deathly afraid of heights, to go skydiving, and Briana’s father was on hand to take pictures of the event. It seemed like the perfect setting, and Bobby laughs retelling the story about how she looked at him expectantly after they both hit the ground, yet he produced no ring. That’s because he had a better plan in mind. In June 2014, Ruby Velle & the Soulphonics were scheduled to perform at a summer festival in Virginia Highlands. “I emailed Ruby & the Soulphonics and asked if I could get on stage and propose to her since they were playing during our first date,” Bobby said. The band agreed, but Bobby still had some loopholes to jump through. There was another festival happening that day in Bri-
ana’s childhood neighborhood and she had also committed to hosting a friend’s baby shower, yet Bobby still had to get her to come to the festival in Virginia Highlands. Bobby had Briana’s friend lie to her and tell her she changed the baby shower date and he also had to whisk her away from her neighborhood festival to get down to the Highlands festival on time. “Ruby was on stage asking for me on the microphone because I wasn’t there,” Bobby said. He was supposed to hop on stage on his own during a certain song, but the couple was running late. Bobby also arranged for Briana’s photographer friend to hide in the crowd to take pictures of the proposal. Finally, the couple made it to the stage and when Bobby started walking on stage, Briana thought he was just being silly, but he made it on stage and popped the question. Of course she said yes, hopped up on stage and the two danced just as they had on their first date. The wedding and reception were Oct. 10, 2015 at Red Hare Brewery. Bobby said what he enjoys most about being married is the connection and solidarity he shares with Briana. “There’s no question about it,” he said. He said while just dating, there is always a chance that the relationship could end, but with marriage, it’s different. “There’s no turning back.” The couple lives in Marietta.

wedding day thoughts {Briana} What made your wedding unique? Our wedding was pretty much completely DIY so all of the flowers, decorations and food were all made with love by ourselves and our amazing family and friends. At the end of the night we gave away all of the flower arrangements so our guests could enjoy them. What was your favorite moment of the wedding? When Bobby and I exchanged our personal vows was my favorite. We were both in anticipation of what the other was going to say. I think it’s always special when your vows symbolize how you feel in your heart and ours certainly did. What was your favorite part of the reception? Having a live band was probably my favorite part. It made the atmosphere so lively and it made for some really good dancing. Were you nervous? I got nervous right before I walked down the aisle and when I was saying my vows. I was so afraid I was going to mess up. Tell me about your first dance. What song was it? It was to “Inside My Love” by Minnie Ripperton. Our first dance as
husband and wife was breathtaking. As we danced we locked eyes and pretty much told each other how much in love we are without saying a word. It was like we were the only ones there. What was the funniest thing that happened on your wedding day? We have this thing where we reply with “you do” in a really sarcastic voice so it was funny when we said “I do” we both replied with “you do.” Any wedding bloopers you care to mention? We had a Mexican themed menu and rented a cheese fountain for the buffet centerpiece, only to find out about an hour before the wedding started that it did not work. Luckily we had a crock pot on hand that worked out just fine. What advice would you have for brides-to-be in planning a wedding? Make the planning process fun and enjoyable. Don’t allow yourself to stress over all the details, something will likely not go the way you planned and that’s okay. At the end of the day you are marrying the man of your dreams and that’s all that really matters.

wedding day thoughts {Bobby} Where did you get your wedding cake? We got our wedding cake from Miss Mamie’s on Marietta Square. It was a delicious pumpkin spice cake. Did you have a traditional groom’s cake or something more modern? We didn’t have a separate groom’s cake. Who did your flowers? My beautiful bride created all the flower arrangements, bouquets and boutonnieres with the help of family and friends. Did your wedding have a specific design/ theme? The theme we were going for was simple elegance. The wedding was in October, so everything was fall based. I choose an orange, white and grey color scheme which turned out beautiful. On top of that, we incorporated our love for Mexican food, beer and margaritas. Where did you draw your inspiration from? We drew a lot of inspiration from the location. We love the rustic industrial look and the brewery was the perfect backdrop. We also drew inspiration from Briana’s beautiful eyes, her long flowing blonde hair, and of course that wonderful smile that could
12
light up anyone’s day. We also love the fact that we keep each other in such high spirits with our love, hence, a brewery wedding. :) Any special touches? All of the flower arrangements were amazing. We used wooden boxes that we made out of pallets and white pumpkins to create all of the flower centerpieces. Where did you have your honeymoon and when/how long did you go? We honeymooned on the island of Santorini, Greece at a beautiful hotel named White. We were on the island for a week and had many adventures. Who did the music at the wedding and reception? The Sublime cover band “Wrong Way” got together for a one night extravaganza to entertain the guests at our reception. We also had wonderful friends who played the violin, guitar and ukulele during the ceremony.

Compiled by LaTria Garnigan Photography by Erin Gray Cantrell For men, choosing a piece of jewelry the woman they love will wear for the rest of her life brings with it immense pressure. But those pressures can be calmed by making the perfect decision — or the most unique decision. Engagement rings and wedding bands are becoming more and more personal, with many opting to create their bands of love from scratch. At Art Jewelers in Woodstock that Andrew can be done. in-house. The jewelry store has been involved in several design shows and in 2015 won Best of Show for the Georgia Jewelers Association. Store Manager Andrew McDeermond said it only takes them about three to four weeks to produce — from design to conception — a ring. White gold continues to be on trend for 2016 in rings, with a steady rise in popularity for rose gold, said McDeermond. Design-wise, the halo design —smaller stones surrounding a larger stone — has remained at the top spot and the intertwining of infinity shapes and styled bands are gaining in popularity.

t’s not a pipe dream and no one knows that better than Rich and Lisbeth Hyde, and their daughter, Rachel Hyde Rice. The Hydes paid for the bulk of Rachel’s February 2013 wedding via barter through Kennesaw-based The Barter Company (www.barterco.com). Rich, owner of American Chimney, Gutter and Roofing, with offices in Bartow and Cobb counties, became a member of The Barter Company almost 20 years ago and uses it for many of his needs. Members can secure almost anything: plumbing services, vehicle maintenance, chimney and gutter cleaning by Rich, and — you guessed it — wedding vendors. “Barter is smarter — that’s the slogan. It keeps cash in your pocket,” Rich said. “I probably do somewhere between $12,000 and $15,000 a year in barter.” It was also an easy choice for Rachel, who didn’t want to break the bank. “I’m very practical. I mean, I’m a romantic but I’m the oldest of six,” Rachel said. Planning and paying for a wedding through barter may seem like a challenge, but according to Rich, it was beyond easy. He and his wife sat down with Rachel, gave her a budget and together they determined which services they could get through barter, and most importantly, whether she liked what was

available. Ultimately, they decided to go with the historic Marlow House in Marietta for the ceremony and have the reception at Copeland’s of New Orleans on Barrett Parkway in Kennesaw. They also used barter to secure a photographer, DJ, limo and a wedding night stay at the Claremont House Bed & Breakfast in Rome. “It was near Valentine’s Day — I actually got married on the 15th — and it was winter time and cold so I was looking for a beautiful indoor setting that wouldn’t require a lot of decoration,” Rachel said. “That was something I was trying to save money on.” “For me, it was like, ‘Okay, what do you want to spend your money on?’ People care about the reception and people in my family want to dance and have good music,” she said. Copeland’s was a natural choice, given Rachel’s affinity for Cajun-Creole food and her family’s love of Copeland’s Sunday jazz brunch, a long-standing tradition. “I was able to have a really yummy spread, all the stuff that I love,” Rachel said. She also enjoyed two acts for the price of one — a barter-secured DJ on the restaurant’s patio and the jazz band already scheduled to perform.

Quality concerns might deter some brides and their families from using barter to pay for their wedding, but Rachel diminishes those fears. “More than half of my wedding was barter but I didn’t have to sacrifice anything. My wedding looked a whole lot more expensive than it was. I love that,” Rachel said. Additionally, they pulled the wedding together in a mere three weeks, a feat made easier with barter, Rachel said. Initially, she wanted a June wedding, but training loomed on the horizon for her and her husband, David, both members of the Georgia Army National Guard. They knew they wouldn’t have much time to spend together in the coming months, so they decided to push the date up. “We just wanted to get married, so why wait?” Rachel said. Paula Doricchi, a 10-year employee of The Barter Company did all the legwork of compiling the network’s list of wedding-related vendors, leaving Rachel just one

task: choose. Paula said the company has more than 2,500 clients who barter with each other, the majority of whom are in Georgia, with some in Florida. The company also networks with other barter companies to broaden clients’ options. Though barter is a centuries-old practice, today’s approach is a little different, she said. “The difference between barter way back when and now is we’re a round robin system. Rich could do my gutters, get barter [dollars] from me, but he doesn’t have to ever spend it with me again. He could take that barter money and go to Copeland’s to eat,” Doricchi said. Rich did that and more, feeding dozens of family members and friends and giving his daughter a wedding to remember. “It really worked out perfectly,” he said.

e had an exclusive interview with sought-after wedding and event planner David Tutera, star of the television series “CELEBrations,” at his ‘Your Wedding Experience’ bridal show at the Georgia World Congress Center last year. He shared his thoughts on current trends and offered some invaluable tips.
THIS YEAR’S TRENDS In 2016, expect to see an infusion of warmer, pastel tones, as well as more glamour in dresses and decor, said Tutera. More couples are also opting to have the ceremony and reception in the same venue, and the DIY trend is here to stay. Tutera, who has his own line of do-it-yourself crafts, said he loves DIY because it’s a way for couples to add a personal touch to their special day. Individually-made wedding favors are always a hit with guests — think homemade treats, handmade soaps or mixtapes. But it can be a time-consuming task. If you have limited time (or lack creative skills) consider creating only one décor item for the reception, or adding a simple element to centerpieces — such as lace, buttons, burlap or twine to a candle or vase. Creating an escort board to use instead
22
of cards is a trend that’s catching on. “It’s a great project for a bride because you can start in advance, even before you know who your guests are,” Tutera said.
HOW TO CHOOSE A WEDDING PLANNER DIY is fun, but you don’t want to do it all yourself, of course. Big occasions demand the help of a seasoned professional. So how do you find the one that’s right for you? It can be difficult to vet a wedding planner, Tutera said. While a planner may work miracles for one couple, their style and personality may clash with yours. When interviewing, you should always ask for references, but the most important thing is to have a connection — find a wedding planner who understands you. “If the potential wedding planner is dictating to you what they think you should do for your wedding, that is a red flag not to hire them,” Tutera said. Your wedding planner should provide direction or advice when necessary, but he/she shouldn’t be telling you what’s wrong or right. Remember it is your wedding. You’re allowed to have what makes you happy and no one — not your mother-in-law, not Auntie Negative Nancy and especially not your wedding planner — should be getting in the way of your dreams (exceptions of course, if you are blowing your budget or your inner Bridezilla has taken your reasonable thoughts hostage). “In essence, your wedding planner is truly becoming your best friend, your mentor, your mediator, your voice to the vendors,” Tutera said. “They really have to get you. If you sense the person doesn’t have the right style and isn’t adaptable, move on to the next interview.”

YOU’VE CHOSEN A PLANNER, NOW WHAT? To Pinterest or not to Pinterest, that is the question. Ohhhh those bite-size tuxedo cakes are a must! And those vintage keys as escort cards, what a clever idea! But wait, look at these table numbers on sand dollars! OMG, should we have a Rice Krispies wedding cake? Too often, couples look at so many other ideas rather than taking time to think about what they really like. As a result, they end up being disconnected from what they really want, and have mismatched ideas that are all over the place. “So my job now is to find a needle in the haystack,” Tutera said. “It’s like sifting through the sand to find one thing that makes sense.” If you don’t immediately have a pretty clear idea of what you want for your wedding, do yourself a favor and don’t fall down the infinite Pinterest rabbit hole. It will only overwhelm you. Instead, sit down with your significant other to discuss what you both want. Write it down. “Couples need to focus their idea and fine-tune the direction,” Tutera said. First, choose three colors: a primary, an accent and a buffer, Tutera said. Then choose a style — it doesn’t have to be a theme, it may simply be ‘country’ or ‘glamour.’ And then you can roam the World Wide Web for a more focused search base. And remember, once you have the basic concept, your team of vendors can help you shape the vision.

YOU’RE SET WITH YOUR VISION FOR THE DAY. BUT YOU WANT TO MAKE SURE IT’S AN UNFORGETTABLE DAY FOR YOUR GUESTS AS WELL. WHAT’S THE ONE THING YOU SHOULD SPEND MONEY ON TO ENSURE GUESTS HAVE A GOOD TIME? Music. It makes the people come together, so says Madonna. “You can spend tons of money on everything else, but if you have bad music, you’ve got a dead party,” Tutera said. When planning, people tend to concentrate on the playlist. But it’s more important to choose the right band or DJ that will bring the energy you want to the party. “Ask, will this band pull off what I need? Will this DJ be one that speaks the whole time, or will I have someone that spins great music and reads my guests?” Tutera said.

n Wedding blogger Jen Carreiro shared her fun and creative idea for a bridal shower or bachelorette party — a DIY nail polish bar. Everyone in the bridal party creates their own unique polish to wear on the day of the wedding. It’s a fun, interactive activity and the bridesmaids will have a gift to take away, along with the memories. Plus, it will make the wedding day even more personalized and special. We asked the
CAKE BOSS BUDDY VALASTRO for his take on cake trends and traditions
The star of the TLC hit show “Cake Boss” said he likes to tell a story when making a cake, and the invitations, venue, dress and wedding colors tell him a lot about a bride.
FOR BATTER OR FOR WORSE As with the wedding planner, you want your relationship with your cake maker to be a match made in heaven. “Things are not always going to be perfect,” Valastro said. “But if you have a relationship with the baker, you will know the person is reliable and will stand behind their work.” Valastro said the secret to his success is honesty and making each bride feel special. “If you leave a consultation from a baker and you feel that way, that’s your baker,” he said. Of course, also be aware if the place is clean, if the business has a solid reputation, if they deliver the cake in a car or box truck with refrigeration. Pay attention also to what questions they ask you — it may help determine if they are trustworthy and committed to
28
making your day special. For example, if you want cannoli cream filling and the baker doesn’t mention that cannoli cream isn’t going to taste good after sitting out for six or eight hours, then that person is either unknowledgeable or not being forthcoming, Valastro said. “Also, if the baker doesn’t ask to see your dress, etc. they aren’t really trying to customize it for you. If they throw you a book and say pick a cake…maybe you should move on,” Valastro said.
CAKE OR DESSERT BAR? “Call me old fashioned, but I like having a wedding cake,” Valastro said. “It’s nice to have that picture of your wedding cake to look back at…there are certain things you look back on and laugh at — the tuxedos, the dress, cake style — and you can see the evolution of trends. I think it’s something that you will always want to have.” If you really want to please the masses, consider a compromise: a smaller wedding cake along with a dessert bar.

TIL DEATH BY CHOCOLATE DO US PART You can’t go wrong with vanilla and chocolate with chocolate fudge. “It’s a crowd pleaser, it tastes good at room temperature, and it holds up for decorating,” said Valastro. Seasonal cakes are also big hits, he said. Indulge in decadent chocolate or red velvet in the winter; imagine autumn-kissed pumpkin, apple or carrot flavors in the fall. For spring or summer, go with a light and fruity or zesty flavor, like French cream and fresh strawberries or lemon and raspberry. But don’t try to “reinvent the wheel” with complex flavors, said Valastro. Simplicity is usually the best bet, so stick with the classics. “There’s no such thing as a filling going out of style,” he said.
HOW IMPORTANT IS A GROOM’S CAKE? Valastro said they are always a hit. It’s a great way to make a cool tribute to your guy. Make it over the top and fun, he said.
WHAT DOES THE CAKE BOSS SAY ABOUT SMASHING THE CAKE ON EACH OTHER’S FACE? “It depends on how playful and fun your relationship is. They say it’s good luck. I think whoever goes first sets the tone. If you make a big sloppy mess, there is going to be retaliation.”
HOW ABOUT SAVING TWO SLICES TO EAT ON YOUR ONE-YEAR ANNIVERSARY? “I don’t know if I would eat anything a year old,” said Valastro. “But so many people do it and tell me it was amazing.” Will it taste the same? Probably not, he said. Instead he recommends saving a portion in the freezer to enjoy after the honeymoon. Then on your anniversary go back to the baker for a small top tier cake to relive the memory. Brides 2016 | Cobb/Cherokee Life

a touch of
Glam By Meredith Pruden Photography by Erin Gray Cantrell
As societal norms around women’s equality and around marriage itself begin to evolve, so too do styles and options of wedding dress.

The big, beautiful ball gowns haven’t disappeared entirely (and probably never will), but they have been scaled back to make room for more contemporary explorations of what it means to be a 21st century bride. Today, there’s a style of dress out there for any type of bride — from the most traditional to the most modern — so, it’s not surprising the spring 2016 bridal gown collections are some of the most creative and avant-garde we’ve seen to date:

TREND No. 1: COLOR We hate to say we told you so, but color is here to stay. When we featured a black gown in the first ever Brides issue years ago, folks thought we were crazy, but the contemporary trend has continued ever since with new colors gracing the runways each season. Last year, steel gray and other pastels made an appearance at spring weddings, so it’s not surprising to see a bevy of pastels gracing this year’s collections. But, it’s not just new colors that are making a mark this year, as the trendy look evolves into patterns in a wide array of eye-catching palettes. One of our absolute faves is the Theia Fae included here.
TREND No. 2: DARE TO BARE Another trend that continues to buck tradition and become more daring with each passing season is to show more and more skin. Whether it’s this season’s plunging necklines, thigh high skirt slits or full on illusion bodices, the idea of the blushing bride hidden behind layers of Cinderella ball gown and huge veils is quickly becoming a thing of the past. We chose to showcase a few gowns on the more modest side of this trend, including a tamed plunging neckline with illusion lace by Enchanting and two illusion bodice looks of varying reserve by Enchanting and Beautiful. Aria also has a modified princess ball gown with thigh slit skirt that is to die for (not shown in this feature). All of these are sure to add a bit of va-vavoom to the big day.
TREND No. 3: DETAILS Attention to detail always has been an important part of bridal gowns and certainly one of the contributing factors to their price tags as well. This year, detailing reaches new heights, as designers add 3D floral appliqués, intricate hand beading, delicate embroidery and even cool wave patterns to the spring 2016 collections. Although all of these trendy elements contribute to the overall feel of the season and overwhelming attention to detail of its gowns, our favorite new detail is feathers. Sure, we’ve seen this trend before in year’s past, but nothing like the spring 2016 season where they’ve truly taken center stage. There’s really no better way to marry whimsy and old Hollywood glamour than feathers, and one of our favorites is the Aria mermaid dress included here.
TREND No. 4: SEPARATES
It seems like we’ve talked about destination weddings and the little white dress (LWD) pretty much every year, but the truth is these trends aren’t going anywhere. Since it seems the LWD and designation weddings are here to stay, it only makes sense designers would finally start finding new ways to keep today’s modern brides on their collective toes. Sure, you can still find plenty of LWDs out there, but this season there are so many more options! Enter two-piece wedding dresses and separates. Whether for a destination wedding or just a bride who wants a bit more contemporary comfort, we think separates are, like designation weddings themselves, here to stay. Some of our favorites for this season, including the Theia Ellen pant suit with sexy deep V neckline and the Enchanting two-piece satin trumpet gown, are featured here.
32
Upping the ante on the multi-season trend toward color and ensuring any bride will look as though she stepped off the canvas of a great watercolor master, the Theia Fae halter sheath dress ($2,995) features a muted pastel floral pattern on flowing silk chiffon and comes with a tie back belt (not shown here). The team at Diamonds R Forever paired the dress with equally trendsetting jewelry, including a 38.29ct lavender quartz ring accented with diamonds in 14K yellow gold ($2,099), 14K white gold Tahitian pearl and custom pink and green tourmaline charms on diamond huggie style hoop earrings ($2,199), and a 1.93cwt Sylvie Collection diamond engagement ring in 14K white gold ($4,325). Yellow gold is making a comeback, and it’s okay to mix and match metals! Theia gowns are available at Adore.

When you’re wearing feathers, your jewelry also should make a statement, so the Diamonds R Forever team added an 18K twotone diamond and natural pink sapphire band ring ($3,699), a 1.45ctw pink sapphire ring in 14K white gold accented with 0.15twt diamonds ($5,999), round diamond stud earrings ($8,799) and a 5.12ctw big and little diamond line bracelet in 18K white gold ($14,900). Aria gowns are handmade in Los Angeles and locally available at Adore.

Spring 2016 is simply flush with trendy details like 3D florals, intricate wave patterns and more, but one of our favorites is the opulently daring feather. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen feather details over the last five years, but they’re making a comeback and looking better than ever! The Aria Marilyn ($2,950) is a strapless sweetheart gown with full-length feathered mermaid skirt and corseted bodice with garment boning in silk satin.

It’s never been more appropriate to show a bit of skin on your wedding day but, for the more modest amongst us, this sleeveless stretch mesh sheath gown by Mon Cheri Enchanting ($398) still manages to leave a little something to the imagination while being totally on trend. The plunging pleated bodice features hand-beaded illusion at the bateau neckline and drops to a V-back. It also includes a front panel skirt that opens to a center slit, which hints toward the timely thigh high slit trend without revealing too much. A 14K white gold beaded diamond line bracelet ($1,875), sterling silver and mother of pearl ring ($119), pearl stud earrings with diamond halo ($699), pearl and diamond earring jacket in 14K white gold ($1,500), 14K white gold engagement ring with 1.31ctw diamonds ($2,655) and 14K white gold stackable diamond band with .09ctw diamonds ($929) prove you don’t have to break the bank to rock a bit of bling on your wedding day. This well-tailored pearl white Ellen pant suit by Theia ($1,995) features a deep V-neck, long-sleeve jacket and trouser slacks for a crisp two-piece look that will have any bride looking smart on her big day — no matter the locale. It’s one of the best examples of the trend toward two-piece and separates we’ve seen, plus it can undoubtedly stand in for the consummate (but possibly overdone) little white dress long lauded for its wedding destination appropriateness. There’s little need for super flashy jewelry when your wardrobe is this timelessly classic, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still rock a bit of ice. Three diamonds by the inch chains are stacked for a layered look up top (a Roberto Coin diamonds by the inch with a twist 18K 36” necklace for $4,740, an 18K yellow gold diamonds by the inch 20” with seven round diamonds necklace for $2,934 and an 18K yellow gold diamonds by the inch 20” with five round diamonds necklace for $1,738), then the team at Diamonds R Forever added a Roberto Coin 18K medium primavera stretch bracelet ($2,000) and a 2.26ctw white and fancy champagne diamond band ring in 14K yellow gold. Theia is available at Adore.

While there are plenty of Spring 2016 gowns that are little more than well-placed lace, this sophisticated, full-length mermaid gown with sweetheart illusion neckline by Beautiful by Enzoani ($1,150) plays at the illusion bodice trend without the bride having to bare it all. Corded lace tulle and re-embroidered scallop hem lace create the illusion, while the low U-shape illusion back helps create the wow factor from any angle. The team at Diamonds R Forever accented this elegant look with equally refined jewelry, including an 18K fancy diamond necklace with round brilliant diamonds ($2,250), a 14K white gold diamond cuff bracelet with round diamonds ($2,150), a 14K white gold diamond band with mill grain accents and 27 round diamonds ($899 band only), and a 14K white gold split shank halo engagement ring with 0,50ctw round brilliant diamond halo ($1,399) with 1.02ctw pear brilliant diamond ($4,695). For the bride who loves the illusion bodice trend and is ready to take it just a step further, this Enchanting by Mon Cheri cap sleeve silky crepe slim A-line gown ($538) showcases a lace appliqué bodice with bateau illusion neckline while still featuring a fairly modest skirt with sweeping train. It’s a great way to introduce a bit of sex appeal to the big day without offending mom. So long as we’re bucking tradition with the dress, why not walk the line between traditional and contemporary with the jewelry choices too?! The Diamonds R Forever team paired this gown with a 5.12ctw big and little diamond line bracelet in 18K white gold ($14,900), custom blue topaz and south sea pearl dangle earrings in 14K white gold ($1,349) and a 0.92ctw Sylvie Collection engagement ring in 14K white gold head built for 1ct center stone ($4,475; center stone not included in the price). What happens when you take a traditional bridal gown silhouette and cut it in two? You get this comfortable and contemporary twopiece satin dress set ($558) with a cap sleeved crop top featuring illusion jewel neck over lace, illusion back and hand-beading at the banded bottom, paired with a high-waisted trumpet satin skirt with chapel train and matching hand-beaded band along its top. It’s perfect for almost any bride from the family church to the sea shore. Although this dress is quite fashion forward, it also boasts the most bling of this year’s collection, so the team at Diamonds R Forever selected jewelry that’s as stylish as the gown, including 24.60ctw blue topaz Briolette dangle earrings in 14K white gold ($699), 0.45ctw diamond band with fishtail mount, 14K white gold fishtail diamond band fashion ring with round diamonds ($1,710) and 18K white gold emerald cut crosscut ring ($15,750). Jessy & Andrew Andrew & Jessy MacQueen were married Nov. 7, 2015 at Little River Farms in Milton. The couple resides in Woodstock.
“It all felt surreal and still feels like a dream to me.”
By LaTria Garnigan >> Photography by Blush Magnolia Photography
T
hough it took three times of rescheduling to finally meet — after initially meeting on Match.com — that day in May of 2012 etched in stone the future for Andrew and Jessy MacQueen. The result was a three hour, non-stop talk fest, which culminated three years later with a wedding. If it had not been for the insistence of her mother, Jessy may not have even seen Andrew’s profile. “I was at my mom’s house since she was recovering from surgery and she told me to grab my computer to look through the site,” said Jessy. “Well, Andy’s picture popped up so I clicked on his profile. He was very handsome and had a great smile and eyes.” After reading that he was a teacher and grew up in a city that was near her hometown — he in Buffalo, N.Y. and she in Rochester, N.Y. — Jessy reached out to him.
42
~ Jessy MacQueen “Like I mentioned before, we rescheduled our date three times and I was about to give up, but I’m happy I held on,” she said. Jessy chose online dating because of her hectic schedule at the time, which made it hard to go out and meet new people. Andrew, who was also busy working three jobs at the time, echoed Jessy’s sentiment and said online dating was his way of meeting new people, learning the area and finding someone with his shared goals. Fast forward to Dec. 13, 2014 when Andrew proposed. A small hiccup — accidentally texting Jessy instead of his father — made Jessy wonder if the proposal would still go as planned. The proposal took place at a friend’s annual Christmas party. “I honestly didn’t think he was still going to do it that day, but he decided to anyway and catch me off guard,” she said. “People at the party were able to catch the whole thing on camera, which is great to go back and look at now.” With almost a year to plan, the couple chose a classic rustic theme for their wedding, which included 140 guests. Their colors were black, white, cream and deep red. Jessy said they wanted everyone to have a great time and not have to worry about a single detail. Jessy had a couple of favorite moments from her wedding day. One was walking down the stairs to her brother, who walked her halfway down the aisle to her father. The other special moment, she

said, was when the curtain opened and she saw her future husband at the other end of the aisle. “Seeing Andy made my heart skip and I couldn’t believe that this was it,” she said. “This is our wedding, the day we’ve been planning for 10 months, the day is finally here and I’m about to marry my best friend. It all felt surreal and still feels like a dream to me.”
Q&A with Jessy Where did you honeymoon? Dublin, Ireland What song did you choose for your first dance? We chose Haley & Michaels’, “Give It All To You” Were you and your husband nervous on your wedding day? I was nervous, but to be honest I got a great night’s sleep the night before the wedding and I felt very calm leading up to the walk down the aisle. It really wasn’t until my bridesmaids lined up to walk that I started to get butterflies. I was just so excited the day was finally here and all felt right. Andy was definitely nervous, he could barely even eat after the ceremony. Any funny moments during the day? The maid of honor and best man toasts were amazing! They made us laugh until tears came out as well as cry about all the happy and heartfelt memories. A great moment for me is when my older brother picked me up to carry me across the muddy grass so I wouldn’t ruin my shoes! What advice would you give brides to be? I would say to do what you want to do; it’s your day and make sure you do what you want and what you have always dreamed of. Remember this day is for you and your husband, that’s all that matters. If things don’t go right, there’s nothing you can really do. At the end of the day, it’s all about saying ‘I Do’ to your best friend and knowing you have a partner and cheerleader by your side for the rest of your life.

If you think of all the special moments you’ve had in your life, most likely the No. 1 way you go about documenting those are with photos. And for your wedding day, photos are what help make and keep that special day even more special. We chatted with two local photographers — Sam Bennett of Cutting Edge Images, Inc. and Erin Gray Cantrell of Blush Magnolia Photography — who gave some great tips for couples on what to expect when looking for a photographer, what to expect the day of the shoot and tips on lighting and great times of the day to capture that perfect moment. 46

>>>What do you as a photographer need to know when planning an engagement or wedding shoot? Sam: Planning these shoots is extremely important so you don’t show up clueless. I always do two things before a shoot. (1) First, I consult with the bride to see what type of photos she wants so that I don’t suggest things she won’t like. The consult helps to prevent all of that so that you as a photographer know exactly what she wants photographed, who she wants photographed, and how much she wants photographed. (2) I research the locations to come up with photo ideas. If you as a photographer show up to a shoot with poses and spots at the location in mind, then the bride will really appreciate that. Everything will run smoother. For the engagement shoot, I’ll just go by myself and look at the location, if I don’t know it already. This helps me get the creative juices flowing. Researching photo ideas is also a part of this. Erin: For the engagement it really depends on the couple — some people have a location in mind and some have no idea. If it comes to us finding a place, it depends on their style. If they want outdoorsy we’ll find a nice field or a nice outside setting, and for a more urban setting we can go to downtown Atlanta. You want to go somewhere where there is not going to be a bunch of photographers, so we have a couple of secret locations that we use. For weddings, we have a consultation with them about a month before the wedding at the venue and we’ll meet at the same time of day the light is going to be at the ceremony. We’ll walk the grounds before and pick out all of the spots that will be nice during that time for us to do the individual shots.

>>>What should couples know about planning their day of photography? Sam: That it’s extremely important to let the photographer know about certain things they absolutely want photographed. Take the time to research them and find one that you like! Photographers have their own styles, so make sure their style fits yours. Erin: If they want a certain concept or style to go ahead and get that in mind for us (regarding an engagement shoot). We love Pinterest, so we’ll tell them to make a Pinterest board for the style of photography they like. If they have their colors picked for the wedding we’ll try to incorporate them into the engagement shoot. Bonus: for the wedding day we make a timeline but people need to know it’s a rough draft — it never goes by the minute.
>>>For engagement shoots, do couples need to supply their own props and how many outfit changes are necessary? Sam: This is very subjective. Some photographers, like me, will include an outfit limit in their pricing structure to save time. If a couple has five outfits but they paid for a two hour session, most of that time will be spent changing clothes and not getting the photos they wanted. Pick outfits that have special meaning to you, not just ones that look good. As for props, sometimes photographers will bring their own if they have specific ideas they’d like to try. Bringing props helps you has a photographer distinguish yourself from the competition and shows that personal touch. Erin: We have different benches and flowers but if there are specific props they want that are special to them, they need to bring it themselves. Sometimes people will have certain craft ideas they want. For outfits, it varies. It also depends on what package they’re booking — if you book a longer engagement shoot with outfit changes it adds on to the amount of time.
>>>What’s the least amount of time couples should plan for on their wedding day when booking photographers? Sam: For the wedding day, the photographer is one of the biggest investments a bride will make. As such, it’s important you choose the right one for you. Now whether that takes one meeting or 10 is hard to say. I wouldn’t say this is a time-based choice, so much as a subjective and emotion-based one. Just make sure you choose the right photographer for you and your fiancé, and only you know what that entails. Erin: For engagement shoots, we can do either one hour, a full session (three hours) or another option for the full session where they add on hair and makeup. We had one instance where a bride wanted to do a bridal shoot of her in her dress, which I think is great because you don’t get the time to do that on the wedding day. So she came early and we did a bridal shoot, then she changed and her fiancé came for the engagement shoot. Brides 2016 | Cobb/Cherokee Life

Erin enjoys shooting traditional, color and classic with a black and white touch, above.
>>>Is there a better time of day for photography? Sam: Absolutely! The best time of the day is either sunrise or sunset. That’s when the light is at its best quality for photographers. What we want to avoid is scheduling a shoot outdoors between noon and 4 p.m. This is when the sunlight becomes really harsh and can sometimes cause pictures to look unflattering. For me, I love shooting at sunset, which is usually from 6 to 8 p.m. during the summer months and around 5 to 7:30 p.m. during the fall and spring. Erin: The best time to shoot is in the evening at what’s called ‘Golden Hour.’ You get all of the nice back light and everything looks like its glowing — it’s just a really pretty time of day. A good time is to start about an hour before golden hour and then shoot through it.

Find joy in the journey of creating your special day By LaTria Garnigan
O
ne of the most memorable days of a person’s life will most often be the day he or she gets married. But leading up to that day can more often than not be filled with stress and worry. Couples spend months — if they’re lucky — planning their special day down to the very last detail and hope everything goes off without a hitch. It can become important to learn how to healthily manage that stress, while also continuing to deal with the demanding details of planning a wedding. Dr. Tequilla Hill, owner of Hill PsychoDr. Tequilla Hill therapeutic Services in Marietta, offers some tips to couples on managing stress and learning to enjoy the planning process, while also preparing themselves for this upcoming life change. Hill said while there are many moving parts to creating your special day, it doesn’t have to be stressful. It all starts with your mindset. Her guidelines for maintaining your cool and sanity are: n Determine the shared vision of your wedding preferences and work backwards n Stay organized, utilize checklists when possible n Create and be accountable to deadlines n Collaboratively create a realistic budget with your partner n Identify who are the most important people you want to share this special day with n Seek the help of your maid of honor/ best man, wedding planner, parents, or trusted loved ones as needed n Keep clear boundaries up. Keep the opinions of others who are not involved in the planning process out of the mix. n Stay flexible, optimistic and pragmatic in your approach to managing the tasks. “It’s important for partners to have clear communication about the expectations and shared contributions of the planning process,” said Hill. “Gauge both
parties’ level of involvement and assign tasks from there.” Hill explained couples should also set aside times to check in about how the
planning is going or any other questions or concerns. Stay proactive and offer ideas or help as needed. When it comes to the actual marriage

“Never stop learning your partner.” itself, entering in a new life partnership with someone seems overwhelming. Hill said the No. 1 rule of thumb for newlyweds is maintaining open communication about the roles and expectations of the union. Other tips include: n Understand that conflict will occur, the key is resolving it in a peaceful, respectful and loving manner n Learn that compromise is an art and will eventually be mastered n Focus on both growing as a couple and individuals. A healthy marriage is two healthy halves creating a healthy whole n The blending of two lives requires patience, grace and understanding. Eventually you two will find your flow n A healthy marriage requires ongoing energy, time and intention n Seek therapy. Premarital or couples counseling can be a great resource to help smooth bumps or simply enhance the marital bond. “Across the different stages of the courting and marital process I often always stress staying connected to your partner’s changing wants and needs,” said Hill. She added as humans we are always growing, and that what we need in our relationships may change

over time. Important notes to remember, she said, are staying attuned to each other’s love language, goals and passions — central ingredients to a healthy marriage. “Never stop learning your partner,” said Hill. And one final note on navigating the wedding planning space, she said remember it is supposed to be about the celebration of you and your partner’s love and commitment. Weddings are supposed to be meaningful and fun, not perfect. “Find joy in the journey of creating your special day,” said Hill.
