8 [FINAL THOUGHTS]
Thanks
for being part of my journey
S
late-grey Saturdays or shadow-laden Sundays. Mundane Mondays and thirst-filled Friday nights. Time moves. Quickly.
Thank you for letting me share my thoughts and reflections in my columns. Thank you for your feedback, encouragement and kinship. I will never stop sharing stories, but moving forward my focus will be on continuing to write and publish “The Alexandria Rising Chronicles” among other books, rather than journalism. For those interested in continuing to follow my writing career, you can find me at www. alexandriarising.com, look me up on Amazon, Facebook and such, and drop me a line once in a while.
All the best, Mark Wallace Maguire
We pass through the years and the years pass through us. And, as the old cliché goes, the only thing constant is change. I write this as I prepare to leave Cobb Life magazine after being part of the team that founded it 12 years ago. To say that it is bittersweet would be an understatement. Serving as director of Cobb Life has been an integral part of my 20-year career with Times Journal Inc. Producing the last 12 years has been a dynamic, interesting and exciting ride. I’ve been fortunate to work with some amazing people during this time and have been honored to serve in this role. While the gloss of the paper, the design and the photography is integral to each product, it is the people of Cobb County that make Cobb Life so special. To the citizens of Cobb County, thank you for reading and being a part of this creative endeavor known as Cobb Life magazine during my tenure.

Trisha Yearwood launches Christmas In A Cup with Williams Sonoma Williams Sonoma has launched Christmas in a Cup, the latest addition to its food collaboration with Trisha Yearwood. The country star, television host and three-time New York Times bestselling cookbook author, whose home and lifestyle empire continues to grow, has been collaborating with Williams Sonoma since April, when an original assortment of five food products launched. The collaboration between Williams Sonoma and Trisha’s Kitchen is focused on bringing Trisha’s cherished family recipes and entertaining style to life. Trisha’s signature cocktail mix, Summer in a Cup, has become wildly popular amongst both Williams Sonoma customers and Trisha fans. The Summer in a Cup cocktail mix re-creates a breezy drink invented by a dear friend of Trisha’s, on a hot summer day at her home in Oklahoma, and the new Christmas in a Cup mix celebrates the flavors of the holidays for a refreshing beverage that’s destined to become a new holiday tradition. “A specialty cocktail is one of my favorite ways to share my holiday spirit. For a fun riff on my Summer in a Cup cocktail, I’m starting a new tradition with a Christmas concoction that’s sure to make the season bright,” said Trisha. “This merry mixer is great for parties because you can pair it with everyone’s favorite beverage — from vodka or sparkling wine to bubbly mineral water.” www.williams-sonoma.com/trisha — from wire reports

Molly Blank Fund doubles support of The Atlanta Opera’s new audience initiatives The Atlanta Opera has received a $1.2 million, three-year grant from The Molly Blank Fund of The Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation. This gift will allow the company to continue its intense focus on attracting new audiences by expanding the repertoire and creating new, innovative performance experiences throughout metro Atlanta. The grant will partially underwrite both the successful Discoveries series and the Studio Tour through the 2020-21 season. The Opera previously received a $600,000, two-year grant from the Molly Blank Fund to support the Discoveries series and Studio Tour in the ‘16-’17 and ‘17-’18 seasons. The Discoveries series launched in the 2014-15 season to offer audiences new works, new ideas and fresh perspectives. The company has presented six operas as part of the Discoveries series: Jake Heggie’s
“Three Decembers,” Schubert’s song cycle “Winter Journey (Winterreise),” David T. Little’s “Soldier Songs,” Piazzolla’s “Maria de Buenos Aires,” Mozart’s “The Secret Gardener” and, most recently, Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht’s “The Seven Deadly Sins.” The Studio Tour features the young artists of The Atlanta Opera Studio, and brings an abridged opera to schools and performance centers across Georgia each season. The grant will ensure that students will continue to learn about and engage with the art form, and experience opera performances first hand in their school. In the 2016-17 season, the company expanded its mainstage season from three to four productions at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre.

‘The Shape of Water’ comes “The Shape of Water” — an other-worldly
fairy tale, set against the backdrop of Cold War-era America circa 1963. In the hidden high-security government laboratory where she works, lonely Elisa (Sally Hawkins) is trapped in a life of silence and isolation. Elisa’s life is changed forever when she and co-worker Zelda (Octavia Spencer) discover a secret classified experiment. Rounding out the cast are Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, Michael Stuhlbarg and Doug Jones. (Photo courtesy of Fox Searchlight Pictures) In theaters — December 8, 2017

The moms are back, and this time sprinkling in a little holiday cheer -- or not. When we left the trio -- Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell, Kathryn Hahn -- they were basking in their triumph in mom-ing their way. Long gone were the days where they catered to the PTA queen moms and felt insignificant about their parenting skills. That is until THEIR moms showed up for Christmas. So here we are, getting to meet and understand the women who raised them, and the harrowing circumstances that surrounded it. In short, this movie is hilarious. The casting was perfect for each mom chosen -- Cheryl Hines, Christine Baranski, Susan Sarandon, and we have some great interactions with each and their daughters. In a quest to have a chill Christmas, on their own terms, the moms ended up becoming more and more anxious and controlling of the holiday. Which, of course, led to their original intentions getting away from them, and they began to not recognize themselves or their end goals. What followed was a chaotic and cathartic tale of familial relationships, generational trauma and -- especially in the end -- the revelations of learning who your parents truly are and what they might have gone through when they were younger. It’s a fun movie, and a good follow to the first film. So when the kids are away with friends during the holidays, grab your girlfriends, make a fun night of it and prepare to laugh. Just make sure to leave the kids at home. “A Bad Moms Christmas” (Rated R, comedy) Website: http://badmomsxmas.com/ Facebook: www.facebook.com/BadMoms/ Twitter: @BadMoms Hashtag: #BadMomsXmas Cast: Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell, Kathryn Hahn, Jay Hernandez, Cheryl Hines, Peter Gallagher, Justin Hartley, Christine Baranski and Susan Sarandon In theaters — Now

22 “It’s a great deal of effort, but I enjoy it,” Primeaux said. “It makes me happy.” Through it all, one common thread weaves a story — everything is themed and replete with treasures gifted by loved ones and collected on her travels, including an extensive ornament collection, vintage Santas that once belonged to her grandmother and a smallscale holiday replica of her hometown in Murfreesboro, Tenn., to which her father still contributes each year. “From an early age, my mom gave us ornaments every year,” she said. “We always had our little box of unique ornaments that belonged just to us. I have that collection at home now. In high school, I started a collection of Radko [ornaments], and I started a Waterford collection because I love Ireland.” Talk about trimming the tree with treasures! That’s a recipe for a merry and bright Christmas season.

Wine not? Boxxle gives wine lovers a convenient and attractive way to dispense and enjoy any wine (boxed or bottled) … elevating it above the rim of the glass for easy pouring. Wine lovers can use the entire bag of wine without having to tip or drag the container to the edge of the countertop. It automatically compresses the bag and keeps air out. And if you just forked out $100 for a bottle of vintage wine, you don’t want it turning into vinegar before you had a chance to enjoy it. Boxxle is available in three colors; each unit has a striking, contemporary design featuring stainless steel and one primary color (black, red or white). The handsome dispenser is designed to rest on a countertop, bar or table and complements any kitchen, bar or dining room décor. Create wine-on-tap with the Boxxle Premium Wine Dispenser. It also works great for iced tea, mixed drinks, cocktails and chilled shots, like tequila, Fireball and Jägermeister. Boxxle retails for $99 and is available online at www.boxxle.com or Amazon. Additional wine preserve bags can be ordered individually for $9.99 (for a set of three).

Throwing a fabulous New Year’s Eve party doesn’t have to mean Auld Lang Stress. Here are some tips for making the most of your end-of-year bash without bashing your wallet or time:
1. Reuse your holiday décor Chances are, you have some great holiday décor that would also coordinate with New Year’s Eve. While you’ll want to put your nutcrackers and Santa Clauses in storage, those gold and silver lights you had strung on the Christmas tree, fancy trays, candles and platters and even snow-and-reindeer decorations can still fit nicely within the NYE theme. Also consider buying chic NYE-themed paper plates, napkins and plastic flatware, as well as plastic champagne glasses. This makes the after-party cleanup easy and ensures your grandmother’s champagne flutes remain intact.
2. 2018 will be so next year … next year Avoid buying tableware and decorations marked with “2018.” Although it seems fun for this year’s party, you’ll probably have a good bit of everything left and they will be of no use to you in future parties — especially if you plan to make your NYE party an annual tradition. Buying decorations in silver, gold, black and neutral colors will ensure you can reuse them at any time. December 2017 | Cobb Life
CL DEC 2017 41 41
41
11/14/2017 11:52:22 AM
42 3. Get this party started AFTER dinner Unless you are hosting a dinner party, plan to start your NYE event around 8:30 or 9 p.m. This gives guests time to enjoy their NYE dinner dates without worry of running late to your party, while also ensuring they will still be enjoying themselves when the clock strikes 12. Some guests might also be planning to ring in the New Year somewhere else, so this gives them an opportunity to visit your event between other commitments.
4. Cheers to enjoying a drink, not stressing over it Most people expect alcohol to be available at a NYE party, so make sure you have a booze plan. There are a few options to ensure everyone has a good time without making alcohol availability a point of stress:
Brookwood Christian School The Dyslexia School 4728 Wood St. | Acworth, GA 30101 At the corner or North Main St and Wood St, north of the Hwy 92 overpass
BrookwoodChristian.com
Buy enough champagne for everyone at the party to have at least two glasses. Buy a few bottles of wine and a case of beer to have some other options available but state in the invitation that guests are encouraged to bring the alcohol of their choice. This ensures that you have options (and especially champagne to toast the New Year) but also that your guests are pleased with their drinks. They brought their favorites, after all.
Provide enough beer and wine for every guest to drink as they like throughout the night. You could also consider providing a signature cocktail for the party, but trying to provide every liquor and mixer possible becomes expensive and tedious, and you still will likely not fulfill every guest’s preference.
Hire a catering company to provide the food and drinks. This is more costly than providing the food and drinks on your own, but takes the stress out of buying, preparing and serving.
Make the party completely BYOB. Make it clear in the invitation that you would like guests to bring the drinks of their choice to the party so that everyone is sure to have something they would enjoy.

43 5. Safety first New Year’s Eve is notorious for drunk drivers — and for police officers catching them. If your guests will be drinking past one or two drinks, encourage them to take a Lyft, Uber or taxi ride to and from your event, or have a designated driver with them. No one wants to ring in the New Year with a mug shot or a car accident. Make sure your guests are safe so others on the road are safe, as well.

A new horizon & a bit of Christmas cheer By LaTria Garnigan
C
hange in life is inevitable. As much as we try to control life’s outcomes, there are times when we have to heed the call of responsibility. Whether or not that responsibility comes at a time when we need it most, isn’t always up to us. As you may or may not know by now, I’ve been given the opportunity to progress as Magazine Coordinator for Cobb Life and Brides. This, for me, is an exciting progression. I’ve had subscriptions to magazines on and off for over 20 years and have been somewhat obsessed with them over the years. So I will take this new change head on and with much might. Throughout the last two years with Cobb Life, I’ve gotten to know quite a few wonderful people, who I’ll never forget. And I can’t wait to meet more of you in the coming days. Cobb Life is a great resource for the community and I look forward to bolstering more hometown features as well as helping to provide an invaluable product that you all can enjoy. I’m eager to step into this new role and look forward to learning even more about Cobb County.
44
*** And while I have your attention, I hope you’ve been enjoying this holiday-themed issue of Cobb Life. Since there’s still time to tweak your decorations, we have two homes in Cobb that take on Christmas like no other. You’ll be inspired by their dedication to this merry time of year. There’s a Gift Guide full of ideas for the pickiest person on your list — with the opportunity to personalize items for your loved ones. We also will help you get started on your low-key New Year’s Eve celebrations at home. agic is in the air at Symphony of Toys on Cherokee Street just off the Marietta square. If you’ve never visited this “old world shop with a modern twist,” brace yourself for a throw back to childhood. Push open the door to tinkling bells and carousel tunes. Experience the magic as games, puppets, model airplanes, kites and wind chimes — stacked floor to ceiling — seemingly come to life in this cozy three-room “wonder emporium.” Meet owners Randall and Michele Smith and you’ll quickly discover why customers love “Marietta’s neighborhood toy store.” The Smiths opened Symphony of Toys in 2008. Both retired teachers, they believe that education can be fun if taught in a way that draws kids in and keeps them engaged. “Our shop is truly the gift of love,” says Randall. “We’ve received so much from this community over the years, and we wanted a chance to help the area grow in love and kindness. If one child remembers love and kindness here, then we’ve given back to the next generation.”

50 The shop offers unique toys from around the world made to instill creativity and stimulate the senses. The shop carries brands like Ravensburger, Usborne, Lego, Playmobile, Melissa and Doug, Gund, Tolo, Fisher Price, Toysmith, Bruder, and Channel Craft. Play is encouraged here as Randall has been known to get on the floor with children for almost an hour to demonstrate toys and explain games. “I went in on my way to a birthday party, told Randall what I was looking for, and within a minute he picked out the perfect gift,” says longtime customer Lacey Hull. “Not only was the gift budget friendly, but he also wrapped it so I wouldn’t have to make another stop (with a baby in tow).” Fun isn’t just reserved for children, however, the Smiths believe that play shouldn’t be reserved for children; play provides balance and, as such, Symphony of Toys caters to both children and adults alike. “Sometimes it’s fun to just go peep in the window; it’s like a wonderfully surreal child’s dream,” admits customer John Virden.

hat do you get when you mix a bit of holiday goodwill and a passion for Christmas decorations? If you’re Acworth residents Ros and Jeremy Smoot, you get an outdoor display that not only draws folks from all over the county (and beyond) but raises much-needed funds for the Lupus Foundation of Georgia to boot. “Jeremy’s mom passed away of complications from Lupus,” Ros said. “I grew up in the northeast and a lot of the neighborhoods would take donations for the local fire departments [from people who came to see their Christmas lights]. I thought we could team up with the Lupus Foundation.” “My mom was a Christmas junky,” Jeremy said. “I still have lights and decorations I bought with her that we use now.”

It was simpatico — like Christmas cookies and milk. Although outdoor commercial grade lighting company Christmas Designers donates two full pallets of lights each year, the display is built entirely by the Smoot family, including children Miya (8) and Dylan (12), and set to music. From the main 20-foot Christmas tree and veritable forest of smaller trees, to the abundant scenes, animations and estimated 60,000 lights, the foursome begins work on the spectacular display months in advance with plans to flip the switch on Thanksgiving night each year. The lights are on every night from Thanksgiving through the New Year, and the crowds keep growing week over week with a truly unbelievable crowd on Christmas Eve. On Saturdays in December, the family (with some assistance from Santa’s little helpers) lights the fire pit and gives out free hot chocolate to their guests, as cars filled with awestruck children and adults snake down the street and roll slowly past.

he hectic holidays and chill in the air can take a toll on the immune system and make one more susceptible to cold weather challenges. Stay healthy and vital all season by taking the following steps. Be Balanced From eggnog and cookies to champagne toasts at midnight, you may be more likely to over indulge during the holiday season than at other times of the year. Be mindful of what you are eating and drinking at parties and on a day-to-day basis, and then balance out these extravagances with plenty of rest, regular exercise, healthy hydration and an otherwise nutrition-filled diet.
Get Some Support “We are learning more each day about what weakens the immune system and how we can strengthen it for better health,” says Larry Robinson, PhD, vice president of scientific affairs at Embria Health Sciences, a manufacturer of natural, science-based ingredients that support wellness and vitality. “Good immune health requires more than just

getting enough vitamin C.” For some extra support this season and beyond, consider taking an immune-supporting supplement that goes further than a standard vitamin C tablet. Those that contains Embria’s ingredient EpiCor, a whole food fermentate made through a proprietary process using Saccharomyces cerevisiae, a common single-celled microorganism, have been shown in scientific studies to support the body’s ability to initiate the proper immune response at the appropriate time. For example, NOW EpiCor Plus Immunity contains Zinc, Selenium, and vitamins D-3 and C, and can give you the nutrition you need to help you make it through the holidays healthfully. While all these statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration and this supplement is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent disease, many experts believe they can help maintain your daily health.

65 Relax The holiday season is meant to be joyful. Unfortunately, it can also be stressful. From navigating a shopping mall parking lot on the busiest day of the year to dealing with the extended family, stress can compromise your immune response. Use at least some of that time you may have off from work to truly relax, scheduling some down time for yourself — whether it’s curling up with a glass of green tea and a paperback, taking a bubble bath or doing yoga. For a happy holiday season, take steps to treat your body right and to prioritize health and wellness. — StatePoint

acations can take on many forms. Some may go on them for adventure. Trekking across foreign lands and taking part in some daredevil-like activities. Others may go on a different type of exploration. Exploring the area, learning about the customs and hidden culture of a place. And then there are those who take a few days, or weeks if you have them, to purely get pampered. And there’s nothing at all wrong with that. Here, I’ll give you a bit of insight of where to go to wind down. One place is just an hour’s drive, while another you’ll need to catch a flight for. And if I do my job right, you’ll be making travel plans by the end.

70 Chateau Elan Winery & Resort 100 Rue Charlemagne Drive, Braselton www.chateauelan.com In a short drive from Cobb (about an hour) you can be transported to the serene property of Chateau Elan Winery & Resort. Because of its close proximity to the area, you don’t need an extensive stay to revel in its beauty and tranquility. Two days is just enough time to hit reset on your week. As a matter of fact, I highly recommend going on a Tuesday or Wednesday. I found it refreshing to visit in the middle of the week. This place has been on my bucket list for quite a while and I was excited to see what it was all about. When I arrived, I had a short window of time before I had to jet across the property to the Spa for my deep tissue massage, which was made even more relaxing with eucalyptus oil. After relaxing in the spa, take a moment before you leave out to have lunch at the spa’s restaurant. I recommend the crab cakes and shrimp. Plus, you won’t want to leave the relaxing atmosphere. And if you’re not keen on walking back to the resort, the complimentary shuttle service is a great asset. Afterwards, you can choose to relax in your room once you’re done at the spa. And with several
spacious and luxurious options, that’s not a bad idea. Later on that day or depending on how long you’re staying at the resort, don’t forget to join the winery tour. It’s a great way to learn about Chateau Elan’s wine production and how the shape of the bottle tells you what kind of wine is inside. And at the end, stop by the bar to do a little tasting. The Muscadry was possibly my favorite. To top off your day/evening, make sure to have dinner in Marc, the winery’s newly renovated restaurant. And then use whatever free time you have left to explore the grounds.

72 Elkhart Lake www.elkhartlake.com With a permanent population of about 1,000, Elkhart Lake, Wisc. is quite possibly the most idyllic town for a relaxing vacation. And while there’s plenty of things to do around town, relaxing is one of the key aspects of vacationing there. There’s not just one great place to stay in Elkhart Lake — there are several. Siebkens Resort (www. siebkens.com) is great if you want room and the feel of home. The renovated condos feature 1-3 bedrooms complete with a fully-functioning kitchen, laundry room, living room and dining area. It’s truly a home away from home. For the view alone, the Osthoff Resort (www.osthoff.com) would be key. In terms of relaxation, take your pic. But make sure that one afternoon is spent in Aspira Spa at Osthoff (www.aspiraspa.com). With 22 treatment rooms, the spa is the perfect place to unwind and surrender all your cares. Purists will appreciate the chamomile and lavender that is grown on the property and used in the spa. Walking around town is one of the best ways to unwind. While on your walk, stop in the various shops and restaurants along the way. Many of the shop owners have great stories to tell, and won’t
hesitate to share. Cooking is a great way to de-stress, and so a cooking class at L’ecole de la Maison (www. cookingschoolatosthoff.com) is a fun way to learn a new recipe and as a bonus, you’ll get to eat everything you make! Not a bad deal. If you’re artistic in nature, and even if you’re not, definitely visit and sign up for a pottery making class at Two Fish Gallery (www. twofishgallery.net). Besides having a backyard art studio, the front house features a great
gallery with a vast collection of artwork. What could be more relaxing than tea? Experience a traditional High Tea at Jay Lee Inn (www. jayleeinn.com). At $25 a person, you’ll get a wonderful selection of tea and nibbles — along with some great conversation. And if all else fails, relax along the beach of Elkhart Lake, take a boat ride on the lake and take in the sights. It’s one of the most beautiful places to visit. And don’t worry, there’s plenty to eat intown!

75 Why Do I Hear, But Not Understand? Cambridge University Study Reveals Key Answer is now being released from Optimal Hearing Systems that can be programmed to bypass the dead cells. As a result, the patient’s usable hearing cells receive amplification, thereby improving speech understanding in noise.
Until recently, there was no practical way to identify dead regions of hearing cells in the ear. However, a new British-developed procedure using standard test equipment now allows for identification of dead hearing cell regions. The study suggests that the presence or absence of dead regions may have serious implications in the fitting of hearing aids. This research reveals that amplifying dead cells is a mistake which will result in poorer speech understanding in noise. A new type of digitally programmable microcircuit

“We are employing a like method in our diagnostic sound booths using a sound field speech in noise procedure,” said Dr. Gabriel Pitt of Optimal Hearing Systems. “This test simulates hearing in a noisy crowd. We are able to determine maximum speech understanding by frequency shaping this new hearing aid.” The results have been amazing. For the first time, a patient is able to realize the exact amount of improvement in speech comprehension while in noisy listening environments. These new products come in all shell sizes, including the smallest digital models, with prices starting as low as $995. During its release, Optimal Hearing is offering this new frequency-shaping hearing instrument on a 30-day satisfaction trial. “Your satisfaction is absolutely guaranteed,” Dr. Pitt said. 76 [KEEPING UP WITH KATY RUTH] Thank You Cobb Community Foundation had a “thank you” event of sorts on Nov. 2 as the charitable foundation celebrated the Cobb County community’s nonprofits and philanthropists. The evening started with a reception on the fourth floor of the Earl and Rachel Smith Strand Theatre (I am going to have to get used to typing the theatre’s new name!), where the county’s best and brightest nonprofit leaders gathered to socialize. Eventually, the event led everyone downstairs to the theatre, where the Marietta High School marching band welcomed everyone as they came down the aisles and took their seats. Meanwhile, on the stage, some of the CCF leaders were throwing rolled-up t-shirts into Katy Ruth Camp the crowd. As you can imagine, this became a bit of a hilarious game of dodge-or-catch as audience members tried to balance their refreshments with their golden glove skills. One memorable moment occurred when S.A. White Oil President and Cobb’s queen of philanthropy and fun, Kim Gresh, threw her T-shirt like a fastball aimed straight at Town Center CID Executive Director Tracy Rathbone. The shirt hit Tracy square in the back of the head, eliciting more than a few giggles from Kim,

Tracy and our other friends sitting near us. The theme of the night was “Because of You,” so I and Dan Styf joked that “Because of You,” Kim Gresh, Tracy almost experienced a concussion via T-shirt. It was a great night celebrating everything good in this county, and I encourage you to learn more about the Cobb Community Foundation if you would like to give back to the community via funds and donations. *** Marietta Square Art Walk The last Marietta Square Art Walk of the season took place on Nov. 3, capping the largest Art Walk yet in the event’s nine-year history. Several new art galleries opened on the Square in 2017 and this season just seemed to have an extra pep in its step with the fresh paint and fresh faces excited to see their passions in play. If you have never visited Art Walk, it occurs on the first Friday of each month from March to November. Several of the Square’s restaurants, shops and galleries participate, opening their doors to the public while also supporting an artist of their choice on the patio outside of their space. As you walked throughout the Square on an Art Walk Friday, you could find musicians playing familiar tunes, artists displaying their

77 paintings for sale and jewelry artists decorating their tables with handmade jewelry. The arts have always had a presence in Cobb, but Art Walk melds those sometimes-unknown artists with visitors who are happy to talk about, appreciate and support their work. It’s too late to enjoy the 2017 Art Walk, but go ahead and make a note that March 2, 2018 is when the 2018 Marietta Square Art Walk has its season debut.
*** Next Big Thing Speaking of Art Walk, the term has become familiar lingo for Cobb festival-goers. Others include Taste, Jonquil, Big Shanty. Ready for the next one? Remember this word, and familiarize with it so you won’t be left out of the cool kids’ club: TrailFest! I am a member of the newly-formed Marietta Arts Council and we have been hard at work to develop the city’s next big festival, which will blend live and performance art with exercise and exploration. The inaugural M2R (Mountain to River) TrailFest will be held, April 14 and April 15. Spanning from Marietta’s Lewis Park (near WellStar Kennestone Hospital), through the Marietta Square and into the Marietta Confederate Cemetery, M2R TrailFest will feature artists of every kind along the trail as attendees discover the path and the city’s wealth of artistic talent. On April 14, the festival will begin at 3 p.m. with a ribbon cutting for the trail to kick off the day’s festivities. Art performances, live music, food trucks and visual installations will stretch throughout two miles of the trail and offer an immersive celebration of the arts for all ages from 3 to 8 p.m. The festivities will continue on April 15, when we will host additional performing acts along the trail from noon to 4 p.m. The juried art festival will celebrate the trail as well as the history, culture and artistic flair of Marietta through its three themes: the experience of living in Marietta, health and well-being and the history of Marietta. All installations will be outdoors for a minimum of the two days of the festival and visual art installations (such as murals and statues) will have a maximum display time of 60 days. Although many TrailFest artists are able to donate their talents to the inaugural festival free of charge, some do require payment for their materials, time and products. Sponsors can fund the artists of their choice with visible attribution for their generosity, helping to make TrailFest an exciting success. We hope to make this one of the most unique and popular festivals in the city for years to come. Want to apply to be an artist at the festival? Contact Cassi Costoulas at cassi@earlsmithstrand.org. Want to become a sponsor? Contact Betsy Throop at Betsy@AtlantaConnected.net. A CHRISTMAS CAROL
Now that Halloween is over, it’s time to focus on the real ghosts — Christmas Past, Christmas Present, and Christmas Future. They’re all part of the magic of “A Christmas Carol,” a spectacular holiday tradition. But there’s one part of this year’s show that’s not traditional — its location. Because of our renovation project, we can’t go home for Christmas. What we can do, though, is bring the magic just up the road from us to the amazing Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre. You’ll love the experience and we can’t wait to light up that stage and kick off your holidays. When: Dec. 8-24. Where: Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre, 2800 Cobb Galleria Parkway. Tickets and info: www.cobbenergycentre.com. DECEMBER 15

Serving Cobb County Since 1923
THE GIFT OF PEACE OF MIND While it’s not an easy thought to consider, your funeral is something you should plan for – not only for your own comfort, but for the peace of mind of those you’ll leave behind. Since 1923, Mayes WardDobbins has taken the stress out of pre-planning by offering their advice at no cost to you. Ensure your wishes are known to your loved ones and reduce the burden during this emotional time.
“
We were scared to come to a funeral home to make our pre-planning arrangements, but after spending less than an hour with the director we wondered why we waited so long! The staff truly made us feel like family, answered all of our questions, and we left with that burden off our shoulders. - SHERI
