OCTOBER OPTIONS O
ctober is among us and many relish the shift in temperatures and, with it, the annual switching out of summer clothes for a winter wardrobe. This sartorial tradition is always welcome to fashionistas and retailers alike who have tired of seersucker, linen and cotton and are primed for seasonal wear. I find the annual wardrobe shift interesting here in The South. On one hand, I love cool weather and enjoy donning a sweater vest and scarf to ward off the chill. On the other hand, while fall clothing might be a nice change, it somehow doesn’t quite feel right here in Georgia until late December or early January. I mean this as no offense, but there have been few occasions where I’ve found myself scurrying for a winter coat before Thanksgiving. While the switching of the wardrobe is a tradition for many, I also have other traditions that have accumulated – either consciously or subconsciously – through the years as fall traditions. FOOD: I love a summer salad. Even with my worst garden ever this year, I was able to harvest just enough cherry tomatoes to add some pizazz to my greens. But, I am also a soup and stew lover, which are perfect for cool weather. Give me a half an hour in the kitchen and I guarantee to concoct a super vegetable soup or a hearty stew, all from my own original recipes learned by trial and error through the years. October is also a grand time for breaking out the smoker. Tossing some charcoal and wood chips and smoking a whole chicken is a great way to spend an afternoon. I know some folks associate cooking out with summer, but for me it is too dadblamed hot. Fall, however, is prime time and you can stay outside as long as you need to either accompanied by a football game on the radio or a good book. LIBATIONS: In addition to food, October heralds in a new
8
season of drinks. Instead of sweet tea at lunch, a stiff cup of coffee or hot tea with honey will suffice to get me through an afternoon. Then, there are the weekend wonders. Yes, I am talking about stouts and ales. While Guinness is always a mainstay for my weekends, the other porters and stouts I prefer are just too heavy for the summer and I tend to lean toward light English ales, the occasional lager and a splash of white wine. But, with the cooler temperatures here, it is time for the return of the stouts such as Samuel Smith’s Oatmeal Stout, Nitro Milk Stout, Cobb-born Drafty Kilt Stout by Monday Night Brewing and the incredibly under-the-radar Big Shanty Graham Cracker Stout by Burnt Hickory Brewery. This is also the time of year for rich red wines as our wine writer Michael Venezia can attest to. Pinot Noir, Merlot, Malbec and the other reds are prime to warm up the limbs for autumn evenings. MUSIC: And what else better to accompany fine food and drink? Good music, of course. As the daylight shortens and the temperature drops, my Jazz collection tends to get played more. Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Bill Evans re-appear in the rotation. I don’t know why that is. Perhaps, because I’ve always associated summer music with acoustic guitars and laid back rhythms and Jazz with the colder months? Maybe it is from many winter nights spent at the now defunct Yin Yang Café in midtown where the music seemed to perfectly complement the city? October generally also sees the return of my early 1980s college rock band albums. Bands like early R.E.M., Wire, pre-Joshua Tree U2, The Church and The Smiths will find their way at some point back into rotation. Whether your October traditions incorporate wine, music or food, we hope you enjoy this special month.

Historical hops sipped again at Root House The William Root House Museum & Garden announced a collection of beers crafted with hops, fruit, and herbs harvested directly from the historic Root House Garden. Created by Red Hare Brewing Company, the new collection of beers were introduced to the public during a special beer tasting at the Root House in September. The oldest home in downtown Marietta, the William Root House is one of the only wood frame structures in town to survive the Civil War. The home was owned by Marietta’s first apothecary, William Root. Root would have grown many medicinal plants for his pharmacy in his garden, including hops, which would have been used as an herbal medicine to assist with sleeplessness and anxiety.

Maguire announces the release of his second novel in the Alexandria Rising Chronicles series Mark Wallace Maguire recently announced the release of his second novel in the “Alexandria Rising Chronicles” series. Alexandria Rising was published in October 2016 and its sequel, “Alexandria Reborn,” was published in August. Maguire cites reader interest and reviews as the prompt for him to publish both books in less than a year. “I was surprised at the strong response from readers who demanded a sequel as soon as possible,” said Maguire, who was nominated for a Georgia Author of The Year and Independent Author of the Year awards for “Alexandria Rising.” “While I was thinking the book would be well received by the male audience, I was pleased at the interest and support from the female audience as well.” The book has also received strong reviews from dozens of websites, blogs and book reviewers at home and around the globe. The series follows the tale of Rand
O’Neal, an ambition-less newspaper reporter, who is given a final request upon the death of his grandfather — destroy a mysterious map. What should be a simple errand thrusts O’Neal into a journey across three countries chased by unknown individuals where he discovers humanity’s biggest secret. Maguire says that he does not have a direct source of inspiration for his books. “I’ve always enjoyed a good adventure story,” Maguire said. “When I began writin, ‘Alexandria Rising’ I wanted something fun to write, and, thus, fun to read. Something with clues, mysteries, maps, cold-blooded villains and broken heroes. In that manner, I was influenced by Robert Ludlum, J.R.R. Tolkien, Dan Brown and even shows and movies like ‘LOST’ and ‘Indiana Jones.’” The series, according to Maguire, is on track to publish a third installment in 2018. He has several book sign-
ings, interviews and appearances scheduled throughout the state this fall. You can find out more on the website, www.alexandriarising.com. Maguire, who has won more than 20 awards for his work in journalism, currently serves as the director of Cobb Life Magazine and Cobb Business Journal. The “Alexandria Rising Chronicles” are published through Speckled Leaf Press, an independent press that Maguire founded. The books are available online exclusively through amazon.com and at select retailers. Readers can also follow the book on Facebook, YouTube and www.alexandriarising.com.

“SPIELBERG,” an intimate portrait of the iconic film director, debuts Oct. 7 on HBO One of the most famous filmmakers in the world, Steven Spielberg pulls back the curtain on his remarkable career more than ever before in the exclusive HBO presentation. The feature-length documentary examines Spielberg’s filmography in depth, revealing how his experiences fed his work and changed it over time. Directed and produced by award-winning documentarian Susan Lacy. The documentary will also be available on HBO NOW, HBO GO, HBO On Demand and affiliate portals. Steven Spielberg has built an unrivaled catalogue of groundbreaking films over the course of his nearly 50-year career. Charting the evolution of this iconic figure, Lacy draws on nearly 30 hours of exclusive interviews with the director, who opens up about his bittersweet childhood and lifelong obsession with moviemaking, his precocious early work as a TV “wunderkind,” his rise to fame through an incredible string of blockbusters, his later forays into more serious dramatic films, and the personal and professional relationships he’s cultivated through the years. The documentary also includes insights from members of Spielberg’s family, as well as friends and colleagues, plus clips and behind-the-scenes footage from many of his milestone films, including “Jaws,” “Raiders of the Lost Arc,” “ET: The Extra-Terrestrial,” “Jurassic Park,” “Schindler’s List,” “Saving Private Ryan,” “Bridge of Spies” and many more. Lacy interviewed more than 80 subjects for the film, ranging from A-list celebrities, to directors and producers, to industry insiders, including J.J. Abrams, Christian Bale, Drew Barrymore, Cate Blanchett, Francis Ford Coppola, Daniel Craig, Daniel Day-Lewis, Brian de Palma, Laura Dern, Leonardo DiCaprio, Richard Dreyfuss, Ralph Fiennes, Harrison Ford, David Geffen, Tom Hanks, Dustin Hoffman, Holly Hunter, Jeffrey Katzenberg, Ben Kingsley, Kathleen Kennedy, George Lucas, Liam Neeson, Martin Scorsese, Oprah Winfrey and Robert Zemeckis.

“The Foreigner,” starring Jackie Chan and Pierce Brosnan, is a timely action thriller from the director of “Casino Royale.” The film tells the story of humble London businessman Quan (Chan), whose long-buried past erupts in a revenge-fueled vendetta when the only person left for him to love -- his teenage daughter -- is taken from him in a senseless act of politically-motivated terrorism. In his relentless search for the identity of the terrorists, Quan is forced into a cat-and-mouse conflict with a British government official (Brosnan), whose own past may hold clues to the identities of the elusive killers. f you’re from the South, have lived here for more than a day or ever resided with anyone from the region, then you know that many Southerners take monogramming very seriously. We’ll slap our initials on anything including clothes, shoes, lunch bags and even Yeti coolers and wedding cakes. The monogramming, embroidery and applique business has surged in Cobb County over the last decade thanks to commercial machines and business-savvy women seeking flexible schedules and a creative outlet. Whether you live in west Cobb, east Cobb or in between, we found three ladies who have it all sewn up.
Sew Sweet Designs Four years ago, west Cobb native and mother of two, Cynthia Cooley, found herself driving 20 minutes to Cartersville to have items monogrammed. In 2014, seeking an alternative to making the haul, her husband, Mark, bought her a 15-needle machine and Cynthia started Sew Sweet Designs. With over 5,000 Facebook followers and 1,000 clients, Cynthia offers custom monogramming and appliques, as well as custom logo design perfected with the help of a digitizer. She also offers seasonal items like Halloween buckets, Christmas pajamas and burlap birth announcement Christmas ornaments, a design she originated. Cooley says, “I take great pride in the look of my products. I press, check, and double check each item to ensure the highest quality.” Sew Sweet Designs is located near Brookstone Country Club and prices start at $8. Former clients include Primrose Oregon Park and Brookstone, Marietta Dental Associates and Mayes Ward. Like Sew Sweet Designs on Facebook, or contact Cynthia at cynthiabcooley@gmail.com to place orders.

L
ocated near the square, April Forshee, opened Marietta Monograms and Embroidery in January as an extension to her sewing company, Forshee Designs. After earning an accounting degree from Georgia Tech in 2007, she worked for a large accounting firm in Atlanta. The commute quickly wore on April and, with the support of her family, she decided to start her own business closer to home. Marietta Monograms offers monogramming and logo embroidery to individuals and small businesses, and April works with a digitizer to perfect company logo details. She says, “Quality work ensures clients come back, and that’s what motivates our business.” Marietta Monograms is located at 80 Whitlock Place in Marietta and prices start at $10. Former clients include The Appliance Doctor, Revolution Chiropractic, Schoolhouse Beer and Brewing Company and Home Depot. Like the Marietta Monograms Facebook page, visit www.mariettamonograms.com or email April at april@ mariettamonograms.com for updates on special events — she will be hosting a last-minute Christmas monogramming drop-off on Dec. 22 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with pick-up Dec. 23 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

You don’t need a horse and saddle to get roped into one of the hottest style trends of the fall: Western chic. This trend is all about embracing leather, color, cowhide, boots, bandanas and more. Here are some of our favorite on-trend pieces found in stores right here in Cobb County.

Turquoise is everywhere out West and goes with virtually any color. It’s like the denim of jewelry. Don’t be afraid to make a statement with it, like you would with this necklace and earring combination (necklace above with blouse). $39.95, made by Tipi, found at Horsetown
3 Denim with patterned details are all the rage this fall, and this pair of authentic Ariat blue jeans with Aztec patterns imprinted along the outside of the pant line give a great cowgirl look, while the skinny leg provides style to those who do not like boot cut or baggier styles. Tuck the bottoms under a pair of boots or booties or pair the jeans with a great pair of heels. $58.95, made by Ariat REAL Denim Jeans, found at Horsetown

Cowboy boots can make a statement without being too flashy. These charcoal cowgirl boots are accented with nickel studs, interesting distressed leather and the perfect-sized heel while also going great with blacks, browns and virtually any other color. The old fashion rule of not mixing browns and blacks does not apply here. $149, made by Durango, found at Horsetown

A
rt abounds on the Marietta Square. With five art galleries scattered throughout the Square, a burgeoning First Friday Art Walk, the historic Marietta-Cobb Museum of Art and several art-related events taking place every season, the Square is quickly becoming a haven for artists and art lovers alike. Donna Krueger, owner of dk gallery, has been on the Square longer than any of the other four galleries, which include Marietta Square Artist’s Attic, Markay Gallery, RobertKent Galleries and

Jenny King Artist. Krueger opened dk gallery nearly nine years ago in a space near Hemmingway’s Bar & Grill and said she has seen the Square transform from an antiquing destination into a hip, cultural hub. Krueger had to conduct several renovations during the gallery’s humble beginnings, but it is now one of the hottest galleries in metro Atlanta. Instead of shunning or downplaying the emergence of new galleries — and, thus, potentially new competition — Krueger
said she welcomes the new gallerists and artists. “We’re better together,” she said, at a recent First Friday Art Walk, before she suggested some of her customers visit Markay Gallery. Markay Gallery, which is tucked away behind the Marietta-Cobb Museum of Art, opened in April, with former dk gallery employee Amber Markay Byrd at the helm. Jenny King Artist gallery/studio and Marietta Square Artist’s Attic have both been serving the community for a few years.

35 The newest gallery on the Square, RobertKent Galleries, opened in June, although the gallerist is far from new to Marietta. Owner Robert Kent moved his business from a studio in the back of the Marietta Mill Lofts to its new location on Church Street, which previously housed 2 Fine Rules Art Gallery. “We believe the time was right to open a new gallery with a variety of artists on the Square, along with a custom frame shop,” Kent said. “The arts community is growing in Marietta along with the restaurants and other shops along the streets of the Square. When 85 Church St. became available, it was a great location and we have had many visitors since opening day. We have had a very positive response to our arrival on the Square, are glad to be a part of this great community and look forward to growing our art and framing business as the Square continues to thrive.”

36 [IN MY CORNER]
It’s time to take off on a new adventure. What are you waiting for? By LaTria Garnigan
erriam-Webster defines wanderlust as, “a strong desire to travel.” Ever since I can remember I’ve always watched travel shows, especially the ones on PBS before the Travel Channel came around. I was fascinated with how people in other countries lived, what their cities looked like and how they spent their time. And I was most enchanted with the travelers/hosts and their journey through these different sites. Not all of the most interesting places were necessarily international locales. There are some great and fascinating sites right around the corner or across the country — just waiting on you to discover their magic. I’m stalling on getting my Passport. I really don’t know what is taking me so long — but it will happen soon. Plus, I’m almost sure that once it does I’ll be booking the first international trip I can get my hands on. Being the daughter of an educator, learning is something that is ingrained in my being. I love the sensory and visual experience of learning. Being able to immerse myself into a location — strolling about, talking to people and getting a feel of the place is thrilling. So it’s natural that travel is one of my true loves. And nothing awakens your senses than talking to local people of a particular town and finding out their stories. You’d be amazed at what you can glean from them. When you get to know people who don’t live just down the street from you, your whole world — or at least a speck of it — cracks open. There’s something to stepping out of your comfort zone and getting a fresh new view. I recently returned from a lakeside community in the Midwest (more on that in a future article) but it
M
36
was somewhere I would have never thought to travel, nor a place I had even heard of before. But what a wonderful experience I had. I got to spend some of the last days of summer surrounded by nothing but
amazing views, and had a serene and peaceful time. Talk about rejuvenation! And even though international travel should be on all of our bucket lists, domestic travel is very ripe with the advantages of experiencing different cultures. Just as I mentioned in last month’s travel piece on Ann Arbor, I was pleasantly surprised at the many different languages I heard spoken while walking through downtown, and the many different culturally-themed restaurants that were available. Even small instances like those are what makes seeing a new place inviting and enjoyable. I’m not saying the next trip you take will change the world, but it can’t hurt to try. So step out of your comfort zone, book that flight and see what you learn. You just might shock yourself.

Positivity reigns supreme in the lives of Callie and Jeff. Come, meet the Daulers! By LaTria Garnigan
You know how you hear people on the radio or follow them on social media and think, ‘It would be so cool to have a conversation with them.’ That was exactly my experience before meeting Jeff and Callie Dauler — who turned out to be the amazing people I imagined they would be. Jeff is one half of “The Jeff and Jenn Show” on Star 94 and Callie is the right hand/executive assistant to HLN’s Robin Meade. Both are in the broadcast industry and pretty well known around Atlanta and to their adoring social media fans. So it was a special treat when I emailed on a whim for an interview and it was returned with a ‘Yes.’

40 home at the battery
M
arried since Oct. 22, 2016 (Happy early Anniversary!) Jeff and Callie were the second people — only to the developer — to move into The Battery Atlanta with SunTrust Park as their backyard. With Star 94’s offices/studio located in Cobb County, Jeff and Callie wanted to be a bit closer than their Sandy Springs home and searched for something new. “We wanted to get out of the townhouse we were renting, but we didn’t know where we wanted to buy yet so this was perfect,” said Jeff. Besides being close to work for Jeff — and not too far of a drive for Callie to Turner — living in The Battery has plenty of advantages. Perhaps the biggest of them all is access to the Braves. Callie explained that one day on a whim, they decided to find cheap tickets, watched about three innings of a game and then walked back home. “You couldn’t have done that at Turner Field.” SunTrust Park and The Battery are essentially re-training Braves fans who aren’t used to dining, shopping and hanging out before or after a game. And the bonus is that everything (except the ballpark itself) is open on days when there are no games, and folks are starting to trickle in more and more. On any particular afternoon or early evening, you might find the couple strolling through The Battery walking their dogs Lily and Sadie, eating at one of their favorite spots, Antico Pizza, or any of the new and upcoming restaurants in The Battery.

M
erging the styles of two people is never an easy task — unless you’re the Daulers. This being their first place together, Callie took the time to bring together things they love most along with some input from friends. The neutral palette of the space lends to lots of room to play with color and design, but the Daulers kept it light, lending to a very bright, open and inviting space prime to relax in. It’s truly a home. There are little bits of their own personality throughout the space including their gratitude journal — which is very important to the couple as a daily reminder to jot down ways they’re grateful. In the closet is the jersey Jeff wore when he hosted the in-show for the Braves from 2005-07. And throughout the home are little monogrammed pieces and photos of their union to add to the ambiance.

42 a heart of gold
I
f you’ve listened to Jeff on the radio or followed Callie on her Instagram stories, then you know the couple loves to laugh and inspire. One of their main goals is to bring happiness to people — follow Callie’s mantra #goodvibetribe for a dose of positivity. It was heartwarming to hear them speak on their lives and careers and see the positivity beaming from them. It’s a refreshing moment to be able to tune into someone and know that you won’t be met with negative thought after negative thought — instead you’ll hopefully receive a dose of good news that will make your day brighter and in turn have you paying it forward. That’s the message these two want to impart on their listeners and fans. “I put my whole life on Instagram stories. It’s been fun and it’s my way to connect to the people who listen to the (Jeff’s) show every day and put a roof over our heads,” said Callie. But it’s not just drivel. Callie has a mission and has found a purpose in her daily logs on Instagram. She’s taken on the positivity she’s gleaned from Jeff and Jenn and her boss Robin and decided to manifest that into a mantra and a way of life. This month she’s launching her website — www.calliedauler.com — as the vehicle for this movement. It will house all of what she shares on Instagram as well as curated content focusing on good energy, motivational posts and cool products that she’s found and wants to share with her audience. “Jeff and Jenn, their purpose was to make people feel good. And they believe you can start a ripple effect by your attitude and your actions. So if you start your morning making people feel good, that’s gonna be a ripple effect throughout the city. And I want to perpetuate that and share things I’ve learned and experienced.” At the end of the day when all of the celebrity and notoriety is washed off, Jeff and Callie mostly live by the mantra — “what you put out there comes back to you” — and strive to impart this on a daily basis. With a kindhearted and down-home nature, Jeff and Callie are just your average Cobb neighbor, so say hello next time you see them strolling through The Battery.

My week in California wine country began with raw oysters on the half shell and a bracing glass of a dry, white, French Loire Valley wine called Muscadet in downtown Napa at the Oxbow Market’s Hog Island Oyster Company. The overflow crowds on a mid-August Saturday afternoon made a single diner quest for a seat at a communal table reasonably easy and I shared some time with a Korean lady and her Swiss companion. Napa is an international wine destination without borders. I enjoyed the remainder of the day and relished a wonderful dinner with friends, longtime Napa residents and industry veterans, Ned and Maureen Trippe. Dinner was at TORC, the current see and be seen restaurant destination where the experience is enhanced by the dedication to fashioning the daily menu with locally-sourced ingredients which often includes foraged herbs, mushrooms and other gifts from the endless sources of Northern California’s gardens, farms and cooperatives. Every dish is inspired by what is the freshest on any given day. The wine list is “curated,” a word which has exploded into the wine speak vocabulary and the list offers depth in both French, as well as, local Napa producers and a range of other California wines. TORC was outstanding. The Michelin starred husband and wife team that own the restaurant possess enormous kitchen cred and the positive vibes in the bar, restaurant and kitchen gets high marks for creativity, presentation and authentic natural flavors. We enjoyed the multi-course tasting menu, with each course accompanied with a wine selected to enhance the experience. Overnight was enjoyed in the comfort of chez Trippe with their two cats, Max and Muscat. With apologies to Liza Minelli: “Life is a Cabernet old chum, come to the Cabernet” Sunday afternoon’s agenda began at Silver Oak Cellars and my newly arrived associates were eager to begin their total immersion program visiting vineyards, wineries and benefiting from their status as wine trade personnel aspiring to achieve the elusive Certified Specialist of Wine (CSW) credential. After more than a year of focused study, they would later in the week be tested, after a

48 rigorous review session conducted by Barry Wiss, CWE, President of the Society of Wine Educators. Founded in 1972, the Oakville winery combined the winemaking talents of Justin Meyer and successful businessman Ray Duncan. Dedicated to the pursuit of exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon, their mission continues with the 45th vintage of this iconic Napa Valley Winery. Distinguished by the use of American oak barrels rather than French casks, the wines are very aromatic and sufficiently aged to be accessible upon release, generally four years after the vintage. In addition, proper cellaring will assure the wines drinkability long after they have left the winery. Our educator took us behind the scenes to the fermentation area which was in the process of preparing itself for harvest 2017. My youthful associates marveled at the barrel storage inventory in the aging cellar. After tasting the recent releases of both their Alexander Valley and Napa blends we were treated to experience the 2008 vintage. Our base camp for the week was the 19th-century Sutter Home Inn, lovingly restored by the Trinchero family. Their generosity and hospitality cannot be under-
stated as they pampered us with lodging and the most amazing Napa Valley wine country breakfasts lovingly prepared by Carol and Jeannie. Our innkeeper, Mary Jo Geitser, fondly called MJ, made sure that we were well taken care of during our week in residence. Although wine academics were the primary focus of our time in the valley, we were always surrounded by the bounty that is part of the culture of this vinous nirvana. Happy Vines Make Happy Wines The welcome winter rains all but erased the five year drought. The vine plants, the green hillsides and abundant summertime flowers signaled a welcome sign for the heavy fruit load slowly maturing and preparing for this year’s harvest. Close Encounters of the Winemaker Kind During the week we benefited from tastings presented by two winemakers. Mario Monticelli of Trinchero Napa Valley and Jon Priest of the Etude Estate in Carneros. Mario, a Cabernet specialist, expressed his mantra clearly stating “in its highest form, a wine should convey what the land gives us. Translating terrior – there’s a bit of magic to
that. When we get it right, the vineyard comes alive in the glass.” Clearly expressed in three wines he shared with us from the family’s extensive vineyard holdings, these limited production Cabernet wines were outstanding in the ability to speak distinctly from the glass to the taster. My favorite called Forte, translated from the Italian as “strong,” combines Cabernet Franc with Petit Verdot and a generous portion of Malbec: Innovation and tradition with a touch of magic. Jon Priest is responsible for producing Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from the cool wind swept region of Carneros in Southern Napa. With its proximity to the San Pablo Bay and the Pacific Ocean, the Grace Benoit Ranch, is the estate vineyard of Etude wines. ‘Etude’ in French translates to ‘study’ and the vineyard is home to dozens of clones, each contributing to the complexity of the blends varietal components. The vineyards’ parcels are customized to conform to the variety of soil types and the changing contours of the typography. In addition to the estate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, a limited production of Rose of Pinot Noir is produced. Jon shared with us this important message, “take time to learn what has made this valley (Napa) special, the people, the history, and the land.”

49 His message is clearly expressed in his wines, and the nature of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from this unique environment. A 2003 Etude Heirloom Clone Pinot Noir stands, as of this writing, as one of the most memorable I’ve tasted this year. We were hosted for a very special after hours tour of the Robert Mondavi Winery, by senior wine educator Dana Andrus, a wine friend for more than 20 years. Dana has an extraordinary insight into the legacy and future of this iconic winery. It was an impressive tour. The barrel room is one of extraordinary size, with casks containing wine from last harvest, and we had an opportunity to witness the staging of new French oak barrels recently delivered to store the newly fermented Cabernet juice for its period of aging. The winery, the first post-Prohibition facility constructed in Napa Valley is also historically significant as a culinary destination. Robert and his wife Margrit felt
that it was necessary to combine culture, art and the culinary skills to the overall philosophy of the wines produced to reflect the energy and soul of the people whose passions contributed to this ongoing and evolving masterpiece. They firmly believed that all the art – fine art, gastronomy and wine – should be enjoyed together. Our dinner was a culinary tour de force executed by winery Sous Chef, Shris Stillwell. To accompany the seared pork belly with Soy Balsamic Ponzu, Truffles and Slaw, a 2012 Robert Mondavi Winery To Kalon Vineyard, I Block Fume Blanc enhanced the experience. The vineyards block, planted in 1945, still produces some of the most remarkable Sauvignon Blanc in all of California. Next issue will offer additional experiences on the wine road, as our week in wine country continues.

a tailgating tradition
I
t’s that time … when temperatures get lower and excitement runs higher as families and friends load up their cars on Saturday mornings with corn hole sets, generators, televisions, sound systems, tents, tables and delicious goodies to cheer on their favorite football teams. Marietta resident Donna Konieczny has only missed one home game at the University of Georgia since graduating from the school in 1985. Donna has shared season tickets with friends since 1980, but has special cause to visit this fall as her oldest daughter, Alex, is a senior. Donna’s tailgate group formed after she received her first parking pass. “Getting my UGA parking
50
pass was one of the happiest days of my life next to having my kids,” she says. Members of her tailgate party hail from all over the state and include alumni from all decades, but they celebrate Saturday traditions like family. Donna likes to use themes when serving food and says, “We serve hot dogs and brats when playing the Samford Bulldogs, and only chicken dishes when playing South Carolina. We cannot go without our lucky ‘G’ brownie, and absolutely no orange food is allowed when playing Tennessee.” No matter the theme, time of year or time of day, Donna says one dish stands above the rest. Her cheesy sausage squares are simple to prepare, travel easily and are always the crowd favorite.

There’s a reason The New York Times named Greenville, S.C. as one of their 52 Places to Go in 2017. I was eager to visit, having heard so much about the city, but not knowing what to expect when I arrived. With a very pedestrian-friendly and small town-oriented epicenter and many other activities to do that are not within the center of the city — Greenville should be on your travel list. 53 ARTS & CULTURE With my mom in tow, we drove just a couple hours north (not a bad drive if you’re thinking of visiting) to Greenville during Mother’s Day weekend. If you’re ever looking to plan a trip there, that is the prime time. It’s when they hold their big Artisphere (www.artisphere.org) weekend. The city is chock full of events that anyone can enjoy. We were treated to three days of arts and culture from live music to the big event where 135 artists from 27 states were showcased on a never-ending road to display and sell their wares. One of the big draws were the “live” art pieces — brave folks who were posed along the way completely dipped in gold paint. I don’t know how they were able to hold their poses for such a long time, but their dedication to the craft was admirable. There were three different stages throughout the grounds for local, regional and national music acts — there was no shortage of entertainment. Artisphere is not an event you can accomplish in just one day, it requires multiple return trips. One of the big draws was the Culinary Arts Cafe. Several restaurants, including a high school culinary arts program, showcased their best dishes for a small price and judges (I was a lucky one!) picked their favorite. There was everything from Elote, a firecracker slider topped with pimento cheese, buffalo shrimp pizza and more. If anything, its a great chance to stop for lunch or a chance to be your own judge and sample all of the delights.

54 WHERE TO REST YOUR HEAD You HAVE to stay at the Aloft Greenville Downtown (www.aloftgreenvilledowntown.com/). It is the most spectacular hotel. When you first walk in, you’re greeted by great music and a colorful decor. A bar, pool tables and lounge area are just a ways down from the door and if you’re feeling adventurous it gets very lively at night. But even with all of that, the BEST part about this hotel is not only its pet-friendly policy. It is without a doubt the fact that the hotel offers a dog adoption program. On any given day or weekend — or however long it takes — they have a resident dog or puppy who actually lives on the grounds that’s available for hugs and cuddles. I’ve never heard of a hotel doing such a thing, but it’s a great conversation starter and believe me it’s very difficult to not go home without a new pet! And if you’re just too sad about leaving your pet at home, guests can even volunteer to walk the dogs. I mean what better experience can you ask for?

56 SO MUCH TO DO, SO LITTLE TIME Yes, Artisphere is the big draw, but don’t forget to explore the rest of Greenville. It’s a great city and I can see why many call it home. If you’re still in art mode, check out the Greenville County Museum of Art (www.gcma.org). Each floor of the museum offers a unique variety of artwork, plus it was nice to get away to a quiet place in the city (with air conditioning). There’s a large collection of Andrew Wyeth works — Wyeth Dynasty — on display showing a multitude of work by Andrew and other members of his family. It’s a must-see. Getting caught up in the artwork in the museum, we didn’t make it to the Greenville Zoo (www.greenvillezoo.com/) in time. But I suggest stopping by especially if you have kids in tow. If you’re a foodie like me AND you love barbecue, then a seat on the BBQ Trail Tour is required. Led and created by John Nolan, the $39 tour took us to three of Greenville’s best barbecue spots where we got to not only sample the food, but meet the owners and learn all about the history of their businesses. It’s a great immersive experience and it gives you a chance to sample a different kind of barbecue that you might not be used to in Georgia. Not only that, but even riding on John’s 14-passenger bus is an experience. He’s full of knowledge and even had a handy PowerPoint presentation prepared. Tours are open to the public and held

57 every Saturday. He not only showcases the barbecue scene, John also does several other tours throughout the city, just visit www. greenvillehistorytours.com to find what suits you. If you stay downtown, just about everything is within walking distance. It just depends on how far you’re willing to walk. But be encouraged this is a great walking town, with well-marked signage and is easy to navigate. Even if you don’t visit during Artisphere weekend, you’ll still have plenty of things to do otherwise from the many great restaurants, to the amazing cultural mainstays. Visitors of all ages will find something just for them in Greenville.

odd Droege was 10 years old when his mother enrolled him and his brother in taekwondo. His mother didn’t drive, so they took the city bus into California, Ky., for classes. “Todd was shy, and his mother thought he needed to have an activity,” said Susan Droege, Todd’s wife and co-owner of Tactical Martial Arts in Marietta. “His brother eventually moved on to football, but Todd stuck with taekwondo and today, he’s an eighth-degree black belt.” Tactical Martial Arts offers a variety of training, including Tiny Tigers, Karate for Kids and Bully Prevention. For teens and adults there’s taekwondo and krav maga, an Israeli military self-defense and fighting system. There’s even an after-school program, and birthday party packages are available. “We’ve always focused on our curriculum being more than teaching kids and adults how to kick and punch,” Susan said. “I like to think of it as the whole-person concept. In addition to the kicking and punching, it’s not OK to answer, ‘Yeah.’ It’s ‘Yes, sir’ ‘No, sir’ ‘Yes, ma’am’ ‘No, ma’am.’ We also give a lot of positive reinforcement because they get enough negative reinforcement in their lives.” After serving the Cobb County community for more than 30 years, first in a storefront location on Austell Road, the Droeges had to shut down their facility on Powder Springs Road earlier this year after a lighting strike caused a fire. As luck would have it, a Korean tradition of training with your senior master at the beginning of the year had Todd in training in Alpharetta that day. “Had the school been open, it would have been mayhem,” Susan said. “After the fire, it was just so heartwarming coming into contact with people like a construction worker, who said, ‘You taught my children. Now they’re in college.’ The fire inspector told me, ‘You taught my grandkids.’ It was amazing to see how many lives Todd had touched.” After seven months and nearly a million dollars spent on rebuilding, a grand reopening event for the new and improved, 14,000-square-foot facility was held Sept. 1.

60 [KEEPING UP WITH KATY RUTH] C. Ellet’s opens at The Battery The Atlanta Braves and The Battery Atlanta celebrated the opening of its newest – and, by far, poshest – restaurant on Aug. 29 with the opening of C-Ellet’s. C. Ellet’s is Chef Linton Hopkins’ newest restaurant and concept and is an unexpected addition to the baseball-anchored entertainment district with the lush, expensive steakhouse being a short pitching distance to SunTrust Park. Hopkins, the chef behind H&F Burger, Holeman & Finch, Restaurant Eugene and others, opened the steak and seafood restaurant alongside his wife, Gina Hopkins, and acclaimed Executive Chef Damon Wise. Named after the late Charles Ellet, Jr., the restaurant is a nod to Hopkins’ great-grandfather, a U.S. Army colonel and civil engineer credited with constructing bridges connecting regions throughout the Southeast. The menu features American steaks and seafood complemented by fresh and local vegetables. I took my father and retired Marietta High School football coach John Camp (also my perpetual plusone) to the grand opening celebration as I knew he Katy Ruth could appreciate free, excellent steak more than Camp perhaps anyone else I know. He also happens to be a great date with his insistence on picking me up from my house just off of the Marietta Square and his willingness to wear a sport coat in the summer. The steak was delicious, along with the excellent wine selections and fresh oysters that were offered throughout the event. The social scene was just as on-par, with Braves legends such as John Shuerholz and Bobby Cox in attendance, along with other community leaders such as Terry and Theresa Dewitt, Bob and Judy Ott and J.K. and Pam Murphy. C. Ellet’s will be open seven days a week, with varying hours in the club room and dining room, each taking reservations, while the walk-up oyster bar will be open on weekends and for SunTrust Park events through a pedestrian window open to the outside promenade. The Trumpet Room, a private meeting space, offers AV capabilities and can seat up to 38 guests. C. Ellet’s is inside of The Battery at 2605 Circle 75 Parkway, Suite 400, Atlanta 30339. For more information, visit c-ellets.com or find the restaurant on Facebook or Instagram.
kept secret until an “unveiling” party on Oct. 17. Kim Gresh, vice chair of the Strand’s Board of Trustees, said the donor came to her a few months ago about wanting to help the Strand retire its $1.2 million debt. The $1.2 million is left over from a $2 million renovation loan the Strand took out in 2008 to restore and renovate the historic theater. “I am just thrilled. I brought the proposal to (Board Chair) Faye (DiMassimo) and we started discussing the how’s and the where’s and were able to work out this incredible donation. This will cut our debt almost in half, which will free up a lot of monthly money for the Strand to offer more shows and educational programs to the community,” Gresh said. But the Strand isn’t stopping there. During the board’s August meeting, Gresh and DiMassimo challenged

61 board members to help the Strand retire the debt completely by the Oct. 17 celebration. To do this, they are seeking seven, $100,000 donations to match the $500,000 donation. Gresh said the invitation-only unveiling party will serve as a “who’s who” of Strand supporters, including the secret donor and others. The donation will be made at the celebration but Gresh said the $500,000 check is essentially “signed, sealed and almost delivered.” “Of course, if someone wants to write us a check for the $700,000, we’ll take that, too!” Gresh said with a laugh. “We want this event to be a fun surprise so we are keeping the donor’s name under wraps until then.” The Strand opened as a movie theater in 1935 and housed a number of ventures before it was vacated in 2002. As the building was deteriorating, several community leaders came together to raise money to “bring back the Strand.” Renovations began in 2007 and an official grand opening celebration was held in January 2009. According to Strand General Manager Cassi Costoulas, in 2016, the Strand saw 96,000 patrons walk through its doors; hosted 700 public and private events; provided nearly 2,000 private lessons and classes at West Side Elementary School; saw patrons from 363 zip codes and 22 states; and hosted 28 wedding-related events and seven filmings for television and film. Since opening in 2009, Costoulas said the Strand has served well over 500,000 patrons. “Retiring the debt would have a huge impact on The Strand and its potential for growth,” Costoulas said. “Without a monthly loan payment, the Strand would have the ability to grow its staff to fully support the potential of this beautiful theater. That means strengthening marketing, fundraising, educational programs, and more. The impact goes beyond
numbers and budgeting, though. A donation like this is a grand statement of support and trust. Many people have worked hard over the past 15 years to create the Strand that we know today. This donation is made possible by the roots those folks have helped the Strand grow in the community. So who is this secret angel of the Strand? Many in the community have been speculating, causing for some awkward conversations with potential donors. The unveiling party will be a significant event so the public will just have to wait until then to find out!
More arts events on the way As the fall months begin to bring cooler weather, some of the more popular events in Marietta are beginning to come to an end. The Marietta Square Art Walk will have its final showing on Friday, Nov. 3 while the Glover Park Concert Series hosted its last concert in the Square on Friday, Sept. 29 with the Motown band, “Grapevine.” Art Walk runs from April to November while the concerts take place Monday through September. This year’s concerts have been some of the best-attended in years with thousands of visitors gathering with friends for food, dancing, drinks and revelry, while Art Walk has made a splash with the addition of new art galleries on the Square, such as Markay Gallery and RobertKent Gallery, buying into the fun that Art Walk brings. Never fear, though! In November, the treasured Cherokee Heights Art Festival will line the streets of Freyer Drive and others for this annual neighborhood treat and the Strand and others will continue to offer entertainment options throughout the winter months. As they say, the show must go on!
