8 [FROM THE DIRECTOR]

By Mark Wallace Maguire

The end of summer and a sweep of sentimentality

The last of the summer wine. The last days of summer. The last rose of summer.

All of these phrases are woven into our collective vocabulary. And why is that? Because there is something bittersweet about the end of summer which generally in the South begins in late September and lasts until the first nips of frost tinge the land sometimes in early October, other years as late as Thanksgiving. Yes. We are at that strange juncture of the end of summer and the cusp of autumn. As John Keats wrote in“To Autumn,” it is indeed a time of mist of mellow fruitfulness and the bees do make their last flights of fancy and the crops, plump and abundant, are plucked from the fields to our tables. And while we may not dedicate our autumns to harvesting anymore, there are other cultural touchstones to this time of year that signal the shift into fall. School is in session, traffic increases and the scent of honeysuckles, jasmine and chlorine are replaced by the nostalgic

8

smell of pencil shavings and the plastic scent of Halloween masks. The shadows from the trees began to lean and the day dies a long stretched out elegy. And the old friend sentimentality often reappears in a sense of longing. Maybe for you sentimentality ushers in a longing for the last days of summer, chasing fireflies barefoot on a thick lawn. Maybe a longing for a onetime summer love. Or maybe a longing for the days of young, when the excitement of a new school year, new friends, a new chance at this life was on the horizon. (Even I, who was far from a dedicated scholar, can’t help but the feel the occasional tug for my alma mater Berry College this time of year.) Sentimentality. It can be a dangerous thing to linger in the past, but it can be just as dangerous as not to recall it at all. Before we all donned titles and had mortgages or car payments, we were once youth and, before that, children. If you feel the urge to be nostalgic this season go ahead. Take a moment. Reflect. Who were you? Who are you today? What makes you long for something? And, most importantly, who are you becoming?

13 [WORTH WATCHING] Gone are the days of a summer lull thanks to streaming services, but we are still highly anticipating the fall lineup. And here’s a list of films and TV shows that are due this month. By LaTria Garnigan

New ‘Shondaland’ home Netflix

continues to be on the winning end. It was recently announced that award-winning writer/producer Shonda Rhimes (“Grey’s Anatomy,” “Scandal,” “How To Get Away with Murder,” “Private Practice”) will be taking her talents over to the streaming service exclusively. The new multi-year deal will see Rhimes producing new series and other projects. Longtime producing partner, Betsy Beers makes the move to Netflix as well. “Shondaland’s move to Netflix is the result of a shared plan Ted Sarandos and I built based on my vision for myself as a storyteller and for the evolution of my company,” said Rhimes. “Ted provides a clear, fearless space for creators at Netflix. He understood what I was looking for -- the opportunity to build a vibrant new storytelling home for writers with the unique creative freedom and instantaneous global reach provided by Netflix’s singular sense of innovation. The future of Shondaland at Netflix has limitless possibilities.”

Streaming Disney will launch its own streaming service for its central

Disney and Pixar brands and another for live sports. This will end the company’s distribution deal with Netflix. Disney will be able to charge consumers directly for access to its popular movies and sporting events. The service will house its new animated and live-action Disney and Pixar movies, as well as older movies and shows from the Disney channel, Disney Junior and Disney XD and original TV and films.

HULU is bringing back nostalgic television with “Full House,” “Family Matters,” “Step by Step,” “Perfect Strangers” and “Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper” — thanks to a deal with Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution. The full libraries will launch exclusively on Sept. 29, 2017.

Film industry generates $9.5 billion for Georgia’s economy

FX Networks CEO: TV at risk of ominous state of monopoly

Gov. Nathan Deal recently announced that Georgia-lensed feature film and television productions generated an economic impact of $9.5 billion during fiscal year 2017. The 320 feature film and television productions shot in Georgia represent $2.7 billion in direct spending in the state. “Georgia’s film industry supports thousands of jobs, boosts small business growth and expands offerings for tourists,” said Deal. “As one of the top places in the world for film, Georgia hosted a remarkable 320 film and television productions during the last fiscal year. These productions mean new economic opportunities and real investments in local communities. We are committed to further establishing Georgia as a top film destination and introducing film companies to the Camera Ready backdrops available across Georgia.” In addition to the increase in production expenditures, Georgia has experienced significant infrastructure growth with multiple announcements in fiscal year 2017, including the announcement of Three Ring Studios in Covington. With this additional infrastructure, Georgia can accommodate larger tent pole productions with more capacity for multiple film projects. Georgia-filmed movies scheduled to open in theaters this month include: “American Made” starring Tom Cruise and Domhnall Gleason, opens Sept. 29. “The Silent Man” starring Liam Neeson and Diane Lane, opens Sept. 29. — from staff reports

The peak TV era of expanding programming choices is at risk of moving into an ominous state of monopoly, FX Networks CEO John Landgraf said. Viewers and those who make shows could be the ultimate losers, he said. “I don’t want artists to find themselves in a situation where there’s only two buyers that matter,” Landgraf told a TV critics’ meeting last month. Painting a dark picture of the broader U.S. economy, he argued that it’s beset by a lack of market regulation that has allowed “one sector after another to be swallowed by a single company or a tiny handful of companies,” from airlines to retail to social media. FX Networks and others are in a battle with newcomers including Netflix, Amazon and Apple TV that operate under an economic model that rewards increasing the scale of domination over current profits, Landgraf said. For those wondering what's behind more TV shows than anyone can watch, “understand that a good share of that programming is being produced at a loss, in the belief that it will drive a massive shift in the share of consumption” that will swamp competitors, he said. “It’s a stiff headwind for anybody,” he said, including other cable outlets such as AMC and HBO. But there’s value in FX's curation of carefully selected and produced shows, such as “The Americans” and “American Horror Story,” he said. He continued sounding the alarm about a saturated TV market. The latest tally indicates the number of shows this year could top 500, even before Apple TV dives fully into the game, Landgraf said. FX Networks announced last month it's increasing its availability to viewers with FX+, offering a library of its programming on demand and without commercials for $5.99 per month. The service will roll out Sept. 5 for Comcast customers but deals are being negotiated with other providers, Landgraf said.

t’s not always easily perceptible genetic traits (like eye color, height or shoe size) that run strongest in a family. For Kennesaw’s Mi-Kin Creations’ founder, Greg Michael, it was these discarnate characteristics that took him from the life of a Dun & Bradstreet regional sales director to the helm of his own design-build firm creating fine furniture and cabinetry for residential, commercial and retail display. “I come from a woodworking family,” Michael said. “My father was drafted into the Army during World War II, and when he came

23 out he started a home improvement company. My oldest brother was 18 when I was born. After art school, he started a high-end custom cabinet shop. I grew up in that environment and decided it wasn’t for me.” It wasn’t until Michael and his wife, Toni, set out to build their dream home in 1996 that Michael first kindled his love of carpentry. “I told Toni if she’d let me buy some woodworking tools I could save us some money,” Michael said. “We finished the whole interior ourselves, and I realized I had an affinity for it.” By 2001, Mi-Kin Creations had become a full-time job, and they incorporated in 2005, borrowing some capital to build a shop on their large swath of land. Despite the banking crisis around the same time, the shop stayed busy and almost immediately ended up growing bigger than the existing space could hold. “In 2013, we took another leap of faith and moved from our 3,000-square-foot barn to 11,200-square feet here and invested in some robotic equipment to increase capacity,” Michael said. “We’ve doubled in size almost every year. We’ve gone from me in the basement to 21 employees.” Through all the growth and change, some things have remained the same— high quality design-build services and attentive customer service provided by a family-run outfit. Mi-Kin Creations has been awarded Best of Houzz three years running in customer service and has worked with a wide array of renowned designers and architectural firms, as well as major companies on everything from custom built-ins and large remodels to on-site signage and furniture. They recently brought on Kimball Daniels, making Mi-Kin Creations a fully turnkey general contracting firm. Let Michael and the team at Mi-Kin Creations help bring your idea to life!

The name Mi-Kin Creations stands for Michael Kinfolk, which was the name of Greg Michael’s older brother’s original custom cabinet shop in Florida. Today, the name is perfectly suited. At Mi-Kin, Michael works with three co-owners, including his wife (Toni) and two of his sons (Gregory and Jonathan), as well as 17 others, including his daughter Catherine, daughter-in-law (Gabbi) and youngest son (Justin). 27 be Ricky Nelson. “My dad was a foot-washing, Southern Baptist preacher who also taught me how to play guitar when I was twelve,” Long said. “He taught me G, C and D chords and I made those three work until my fingers would bleed. We grew up on Third Army Road in Acworth on a chicken farm. Every morning, I’d get up with my sister and feed 12,000 chickens before the school bus got there at 7 then feed them again in the afternoon. One of my getaways was to go to my bedroom and get my guitar out.” After taking his guitar to high school at North Cobb and playing Merle Haggard tunes to swoon the girls (which he said only sometimes worked), Long found himself, working at Lockheed at

21, going to night school at the University of Georgia extension college and being drafted by the Army to serve in Vietnam. He and another friend brought their guitars to the jungle and the colonel liked what they played, so he would send the two of them out to other places to play on the weekends, giving them two-day respites from the war. After two years, Long came home and went back to school and back to work at Lockheed, but soon found himself laid off and divorcing his high school sweetheart. In the midst of so many life changes, Long decided he wanted to pursue music as his career and landed an internship at Master Sound Studios in Atlanta, which Long said was the most

Long with one of his many gold albums.

28 state-of-the-art studio in the state at the time. “I was setting the studio up for sessions, reorganizing their catalog, and started to learn the business side of music. I got to know Bill Lowry (future hall-of-fame music publisher) and befriended Zell Miller, so I was 30 when Zell appointed me to the first Georgia Music Hall of Fame Committee. I was still playing music but was learning to put my focus on the business side,” Long said. One relationship after another led to one job after another, including creative director for Nashville-based Tree International Publishing (later bought by Sony Music for $42 million, according to Long), and membership director for the ASCAP and vice president of publishing for Anne Murray’s publishing company, Balmur Entertainment. In each of these roles, Long was a pitchman of sorts, scouting songwriters and pitching their songs to recording artists, record labels, managers and the like. Along the way, he gave non-songwriting jobs to future country music superstars such as Blake Shelton, whom he hired to make CD copies for him for $8 an hour, and Brad Paisley, whom he hired as his intern. “Blake was 19 and had jumped in his pickup truck in Oklahoma and went to Nashville. He called me and said he made a demo and asked if I had anything for him to do, so I hired him to catalog my CDs. He was this tall kid with long hair and a giant cowboy hat. I co-owned a song and I said, ‘If you ever get a record deal, you need to record this,” Long said. The song was “Ol’ Red,” perhaps Shelton’s biggest song to date and an instant classic. “That put a new roof on the house and farm windows in,” Long said, with a laugh.

As his intern, Paisley was more focused on learning the business side of things, but one day, Long made him play a song for him. “He was in my office one day, I said, ‘Do you play guitar?’ I had my FG180 on the wall, he said, ‘Yeah I play, I’ve written a few, I sing too.’ So I said, ‘Play me something.’ He said, ‘That’s not what I’m here for.’ I shut the door and locked it and said, ‘Play me something.’ I was blown away. I called the staff in and hooked him up with some writers,” Long said. But that wasn’t the last of it. Long has a guitar with hundreds of mega-superstar country music signatures scrawled on it, so one day, Long asked Paisley to catalog in alphabetical order every name that was on the guitar. “I said, ‘One of these days, you’ll be a big star. I have a feeling you’ll do something big. When you do, I’ll come to your No. 1 party and have you sign this and that will be my last signature,” Long said. And he did just that. Since then, Long has moved back to Kennesaw with his wife, Belinda, and their grandson to take care of his mother. But he continues to help singers and songwriters navigate the business, including Jed Pinson and Kurt Thomas. He has even recorded his own Southern Gospel music album, “His love,” which features a picture of him being baptized in the river by his father on the cover. “There’s just such a spirit behind Southern gospel music, and to just good country music, like what Eric Church and Chris Stapleton are doing right now,” Long said. “There are so many people now who just want the money but don’t know the history of country music. But I think ‘Bro Country’ is on the way out and people aren’t buying into it anymore. If it doesn’t have a good melody and lyrics and a spirit behind it, it’s not good music.”

huck Gregory is no stranger to nature. Growing up in Indiana he spent the summers hiking and going on nature walks with his family. That love of nature followed him into his career. He is now retired from a long career with Georgia State Parks. So when it came time to finally tackle the backyard in his East Cobb home he knew exactly what he wanted. All it took was finding the right company to help execute his vision. He worked with Chris Serafin of Top Notch Landscapes to reinvigorate the space. LAYING THE GROUND WORK This was no easy feat. Gregory’s backyard is an odd shape. It has a deep slope that leads off into a small creek and also converges into a triangle to share space with his neighbors on each side. So the team at Top Notch had their work cut out for them. Part of the main attraction of the yard is the custom fireplace that was built. Gregory knew he wanted the fireplace, and Serafin’s team was able to draw out plans that exceeded his vision perfectly. This wasn’t without some ingenuity — the back of the fireplace had to be built up several feet because of the slope in the yard to make sure it was level with the patio area. Aside from the fireplace, the custom stonework on the patio is a visually stunning aspect of the yard. Appropriately named “veggie grout,” the design work adds a little bit of stone work with allowing the grass to peek through. “In my artwork we try to be different from the norm through our choice of plant material and artistic design,” said Serafin. “I just try to make things as unique and different as possible for character and interest.”

PLANTS COME TO LIFE A visible aspect of the backyard is the variety of plant life interwoven into the space. There are hydrangeas, mini magnolias, azaleas and more. Gregory’s goal was to create a space that was low maintenance, which was accomplished. The plants are hearty and they do well with the climate and thanks to rainy weather, needs little tending to.

* * *

Overall, Gregory is quite pleased with the space and the work done by Serafin and his crew. “It was better than I thought it could be, they did such a beautiful job,” said Gregory. “It was the combo of the craftsmanship of their work and the landscaping coming together.” Being a small space, Gregory said one of his main goals with the project was to show others that it can be done. This tiny sanctuary could spark someone else’s idea for their own yard. He gets plenty of use out of the space. One of his favorite ways to enjoy it is with coffee in the mornings and hosting friends and family over. There are even lights in the trees, which he turns on at night for a truly mesmerizing experience against the lush backdrop of the yard. And, of course, he’s not done yet — more plants and some unique artwork are on the horizon for the space.

The small company (about 8 - 9 employees) has been able to maintain their stakehold in the landscape and design world for quite a long

time, with residential renovations being their bread and butter. “We just strive for excellence,” said Serafin as a testament to the company’s longevity. “We’re not the cheapest, but not the most expensive and I believe we’re fair and follow up. If something isn’t right, we make it right.” They are able to work on about two to three projects at a time and generally stick close to Cobb with their projects. They do venture out into Alpharetta, Johns Creek and Buckhead on some occasions.

36 [IN MY CORNER]

Fall is the perfect time to get things done By LaTria Garnigan

W

e’ve made it to September! Fall is great for many reasons: football, sweaters, boots and scarves and the beauty of the changing landscape. I have to make a mental note to get out this year and take some photos of the changing leaves that will be appearing soon. Every year around this time I’m always amazed at how fast the time goes by and have the realization that the year is almost up. But while we’re looking to enjoy the last little bit of summer — fall begins September 22! — this would be a good time to check-in on our list of goals or calls-to-action that we may have set in the beginning of the year. Don’t give up, there’s still plenty of time to get some things done. And I don’t think anyone would fault you if you have to push some items off until 2018 — just don’t make it a habit. Let’s get real for a moment: have you accomplished the things you set out to do this year, or even this summer? Did you even make a list? Don’t feel bad if you didn’t, I’ve been slacking on mine as well. Wait, let me be completely honest — I’ve failed. Life can get in the way and we tend to get overwhelmed with everyday responsibilities. And often, we dwell in the space of “shoulda, woulda, coulda” instead of “did.”

36

I’ve been stuck in a routine of getting up, heading to work, then heading home. Only to repeat the same cycle Monday through Friday, without so much as placing a dent into the goals and things that I really want to do. So I’m going to put myself out there and hope that you all help hold me accountable with my list of goals and I can do the same for you. We can all pay it forward and help each other, as well as our family and friends. My list: n Publishing my website — honestly what good is a writer who hasn’t carved out her own space on the Web? n Reading — I’ve been somewhat hoarding books for the past year or two and I just keep adding more without so much as making a dent into the pile. So I want to challenge myself to at least try to read one a month. n Photography — I will say that I have had plenty of opportunities with work to work on my photography skills, but it’s still not where I’d like it to be. And as they say, practice makes perfect. That’s it. I’m going to keep this short as not to burden myself with too many things to accomplish by the end of the year. I hope this has encouraged you to take inventory of the things you’d like to get done either by summer’s end or by December. And remember, if you need a bit of encouragement, I’m always here to cheer you on!

Fast forward three years and they’ve purchased one every year on her birthday—it’s been so much fun keeping up with them!” The amaranthus symbolizes immortality and, from the popularity this business has garnered, it appears the flowers aren’t the only things that are here to stay. Amaranthus began in 2013 when Cherie created whimsical center pieces for a charity event. Playing with crepe paper and mimicking arrangements she’d seen, she made almost 1,000 paper flowers. To her surprise, they garnered a lot of attention. Cherie solicited the help of her daughter, Meredith, a graduate of Wheeler High School who was living in Nashville and teaching elementary art at the time. For three months, the two perfected designs, created a product line of more than 20 stems, launched a website, and successfully executed their first craft show. Today, Amaranthus Paper and Flora has over 26,000 Instagram followers. They have been featured in Martha Stewart, Real Simple, Better Homes and Gardens, and Good Housekeeping. Amaranthus offers 20 arrangements in their Signature Collection at $16 per stem. Shoppers choose from single stems, prepared arrangements, or a “build-your-own” option To accomplish their mission—“Spread lively color. Share lasting joy”—and give back to the community, the Eastburn’s created “Flora Good Cause.” Meredith explains, “We discovered that immunosuppressed hospital patients are unable to receive live flowers; we also realized that people enduring hardship find flowers comforting and have trouble throwing them away. We knew we had to do something to lift people’s spirits and preserve their gifts.” For each bouquet they sell, a bouquet is donated to Ronald McDonald House Charities and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. What’s next for

Cobb’s Wine Guru

Michael Venezia?

A new venture to explore the wine and culture of

There is always something to discover on the wine road and this summer’s two week trip to Portugal didn’t disappoint. Enjoying the magnificent landscapes of the Dao, and Bairrada, where vineyards, farms and vast stretches of rural countryside, populated by those whose families have worked the land for generations, has a certain old world charm in major contrast to the cities of Lisbon and Porto. The steep terraced vineyards and dramatic vistas of the Douro region seem lost in time in a place where little has changed for centuries. The constant is the passion of people and the wines they produce. Benefitting from the extraordinary opportunity to meet the vineyard workers, winery owners and wine makers significantly contribute to the personal relationship between me and the wine. It is important to keep in mind that the wine we drink is the end result of the seasonal cycle of the vine where Mother Nature controls the native grapes, and with man’s assistance in maximizing what is metaphysically contained in the fruit of the vine. Although the Dao and Bairrada have gained some recognition outside of Portugal, the wines from these regions remain virtually unknown in the United States. It was my mission to discover the people and the wines produced in these ancient vineyard areas. Often I thought of the famous Portuguese explorers Vasco da Gama and Magellan who set out from Lisbon in hopes of discovering new worlds and how much easier my quest would be traveling with driver guides. Showcasing their wines with the local cuisine is a highlight of the experience and the lunches and dinners served at Campolargo and Casa Passarella were memorable. Wood fired grilled octopus (pulpo) drizzled with the local olive oil was tender and smokey, a locally raised roasted suckling pig (leitão), its subtle and delicate pork flavor enhanced with crisp crackling, and a shoulder joint of goat (cabrito), was slightly reminiscent of a leg of New Zealand

lamb was served with a red fruit preserve. Eating the local foods with wines produced in the region is the ultimate gastronomical experience. From refreshing dry white wines produced from discovery grapes such as Arinto, and Gouvinho or drinking a 10-year-old rustic red called Baga with its deep color, full body and exotic aromas of black plum, coffee bean and tobacco, the pairings always seemed to complement each other perfectly. In the country, the foods are extremely localized with farm-to-table, the established practice whereas the cities offer a more complex cultural influence relying in the colonies of Portuguese Angola and Mozambique in Africa, Brazil in South America, and the colony of Goa on the west coast of India. Their cooking techniques utilizing native spices and unusual ingredients was always presenting an opportunity to taste something different. Dried salt cod (Bacalhau) and its ever present listing on every menu offers an opportunity to enjoy this staple of the Portuguese diet. It is said that there are 365 classic recipes, one for each day of the year. After soaking in water or milk, as the salt is leeched out, the flesh expands and is removed from the bones. For hundreds of years Portuguese fishermen harvested the vast supply of cod from the north Atlantic and the stored catch would be barreled and preserved in salt enabling the fish to be transported back to Portugal. Most bars have Bacalhau fritters as appetizers, but a most memorable seafarer’s stew was served to me, which sang of the sea with a flash back to the middle of the 16th century. The cod was immersed in a tomato broth enhanced with garlic, olive oil, potatoes, olives and kale. Filling and very delicious, served with locally baked bread and glasses of chilled dry Hera Vinho Verde 2016. Vinho Verde or “green wine”, refers to its youthful character and not the wines color.

48 Spanning the Tagus River Estuary, the imposing 17-kilometer Vasco da Gama Bridge was a morning’s gateway into the territory of Coruche approximately a scenic one hour drive from Lisbon. Archaeological digs confirm a history of human inhabitation spanning 7,500 years. Today this economically important area is home to Portugal’s significant link to the global wine industry. The cork oak forests of Portugal supply 50% of the world’s cork production and is an enormous contribution to the country’s economic engine. Witnessing the last day of the annual cork bark harvest, it was a morning of observation and education. Owned by the Corticeira Amorim, this family company is a global leader in the production of cork stoppers. Upon arrival to the 20,000 acre forest, our host led us deep into the forest where skilled workers armed with medieval looking axes were stripping the bark from identified cork oak trees. In the silence of the groves the only sound was the ax meeting the bark, and the teams of workers methodically moving through stripping the native bark from these ancient trees. Many of these stately oaks have stood for more than a century, identified by their heritage and state of bark regeneration. Only after nine years of growth will they permit the tree to once again be asked to give up its protective shield. After close inspection by a foreman, the bark is loaded onto flatbeds and hauled away to be washed, dried and graded. Ultimately those selected to be used for corks are stamped out in their modern production facility and eventually will find a home in the neck of a bottle. One cork, one bottle, one wine. Cork closures are 100% recyclable, sustainable and arguably the most effective sealing system for preserving the sensory quality of wine. Across the Douro from the city of Porto is the important riverfront town of Vila Nova de Gaia. For centuries it has been the location of the Porto wine ageing cellars and visits to the lodges of Taylor’s and Sandeman were impressive. Within these vast houses called storage

48

lodges, hundreds of thousands of barrels contain the port wines in various stages of evolution and maturation. Once labeled and bottled, the wines are shipped to the four corners of the world. A memorable tasting of a range of aged Tawny Ports in the cellars at Sandeman exposed the complexity in styles of wines blended from 10 to 40 years old. The luxurious texture and long finish of a aged Tawny combines an intense bouquet of vanilla, oak and honey with flavors of dried fruit, spices and nuts. We traveled by train from Porto’s Campanha Station to the town of Pinhāo, in the heart of the mystical Douro Valley. Our driver guide was at the station to meet us and we soon traveled over mountain passes where some of my vertigo traveling companions were seriously challenged. The Qunita do Portal’s vineyards, winery, restaurant and guest house provided me with two days of memorable experiences. By mid-afternoon the storm clouds became visible far to the east across the vast valley reaching to the distant mountains. As the wind accelerated and the warm temperatures gave way to an increasingly cooler air mass, a storm with drenching rains, and thunder was rapidly approaching. Torrents of rain, lashed the landscape causing vine terraces to yield and soon marble sized hail stones lashed the vines, shearing leaves and shattering berries. Once the cluster has been damaged, fruit reduction, yield potential and without rapid drying, the threat of fungus immobilized the winery team into damage control. Early the next morning after assessment, certain parcels suffered crop loss. As a witness to the power of Mother Nature, she wields the upper hand in this challenging agricultural endeavor. From vine to glass is a long journey. During an early morning meeting and tasting with Portal’s winemaker Paolo Coutinho, he expressed his feelings about the unusual weather

49 they have been experiencing and that it is his belief that global warming will have serious impacts on grape growing in many of the traditional areas of Western Europe and Mediterranean wine regions. After tasting a range of dry still and sweet potions, a 2014 Late Bottled Vintage stood out due to its richness, concentration and wonderful balance. The coastal fishing village of Cascais was where my Portuguese odyssey ended. Enjoying tastes of wine served by a very knowledgeable gentleman named Fabio and the appropriately named The Tasting Room, the extensive selection, and enthusiastic server made this Tapas Bar a Vinho a memorable discovery. If you are not planning a trip to Portugal anytime soon, I suggest you ask your favorite retailer to offer Portuguese wines for you to enjoy. A young refreshing Hera Vinho Verde from the 2016 vintage, an aromatic, dry white produced from Arinto, Gouvinho made by Herdadge Grande, or a perfect after dinner sip such as the Portal Late Bottled Vintage Ruby Port will be your own personal discovery.

The harvesting of the cork, above, was a mind-blowing experience for Venezia.

ANN ARBOR

Food and culture make this more than your average college town.

When I traveled to Ann Arbor, Michigan I didn’t know what to expect. But what I wasn’t expecting was to encounter such a vibrant city full of diversity, culture and quite the variety of foodie destinations. Home to the University of Michigan, there’s so much more to Ann Arbor than the school, which pleasantly surprised me. On either the first or second day I marveled at hearing several different languages spoken by locals walking through downtown — a beautiful peek into the various cultures that call Ann Arbor home. 53 WHAT TO DO: There’s SO much to experience in Ann Arbor. Beer lovers will appreciate the many breweries in town and in adjacent towns. There’s a vibrant and robust arts community that features everything from handmade ceramics, to scarves and clothing made with yarn. And if you want to explore downtown (why wouldn’t you?!), then you’ll be just as satisfied. Ann Arbor boasts the most concentrated amount of locally-owned book stores I’ve seen. There’s a store for everyone and you might make it a challenge to visit all of them — as I did. On Saturdays, Kerrytown boasts a wonderful farmers market, after which you can walk over and visit Found to get inspiration for your home decor and then Fustini’s (www.fustinis. com) to pick up a variety of olive oils and vinegars (all of which you can sample in-store).

54 WHERE TO STAY: I can’t praise The Kensington Hotel (www.kcourtaa. com) enough. Recently renovated, the hotel is situated directly across from the mall, which is wonderful if you need to pick up a few items you might have left at home. Staff is friendly and the lobby has the most fragrant aroma. While on a stretch of road with several other hotels and restaurants, it felt like you stepped into a different city when inside the Kensington. And here’s a tip: if you stay on the executive level, there’s a private concierge lounge with daily continental breakfast. Or you can just head downstairs to eat in the onsite restaurant. It’s truly your call.

54

WHERE TO EAT: Now this is where it gets exciting. You can’t have a truly diverse city without showcasing that fact with the food being offered. And Ann Arbor does not disappoint. No stone was left unturned when it came to dining options. The food scene in general has a strong sense of community and many of the restaurant owners and local farmers know each other and work together — and surprisingly help drive traffic to each other’s businesses. There’s no division here. For breakfast, I would recommend stopping by Tea Haus (teahaus-annarbor.com). Opened for 10 years, its boasts about 180 varieties of tea. And make sure you don’t leave without tasting some of the delicious macarons — try the peanut butter flavor. For lunch, there’s really only one place you MUST visit and that’s Zingerman’s Deli (zingermansdeli.com). They’re somewhat of a local mainstay in Ann Arbor. The Zingerman team own 10 separate businesses in Ann Arbor alone, and have a unique management structure in that all are independently owned. They hope to have up to 12 - 18 businesses open by 2020. Not just a deli, it also houses a store where you can sample anything on the shelves. And I mean they will open up a jar of something for you, just to take a sample. Talk about customer service! The item to order is the No. 2, the corned beef sandwich. Another great destination for lunch is Ollie Food + Spirits (ollieypsi.com). Not only is the presentation beautiful, but the food is dynamic and unique in preparation. Items you must order? The dream burger sliders, one of the signature dishes: Helen’s chicken and buttermilk biscuits, and the mushroom and asparagus pasta. The pasta is handmade and right before being thrown in the water to boil. It was obvious the amount of care taken to create these meals. Dinner depends on if you want to fancy or hearty. For fancy, it doesn’t get any better than The Earle (www. theearle.com). A staple in the community for 40 years, the underground restaurant (it’s literally under ground) boasts an impressive French and Italian menu with more than 1,200 different wines on the menu. If you’d like to keep it casual, visit Mani Osteria & Bar (www.maniosteria.com). The Italian restaurant offers small plates and some of the best wood fired pizza around. And don’t forget to order a pasta dish as well — this place is great for families.

58 [KEEPING UP WITH KATY RUTH] Strand baby! Something has been missing from the Strand lately, and it isn’t charm. It’s our very own happy and humorous Andy Gaines! Andy and his wife, Casey, welcomed their second child, Theodore “Teddy” Parker Gaines, on July 23. Teddy joins 2-and-a-half-yearold brother William in the Gaines party of four. Andy, who is the facilities and events director for the Strand, was especially proud of Casey because she chose to have a natural birth. In the words of Strand General Manager Cassi Costoulas, “Wowee!” “Casey was a trooper having a natural birth for a nine-pound baby; she is already back up and moving,” Andy said. “William has taken and ran Katy Ruth with the big brother moniker. He loves holding Camp baby brother Teddy. I’ve enjoyed the time settling into our expanding family.” The Strand staff gave the Gaines clan a special surprise when they lit up the Strand marquee with a special congratulations message, which read: “Happy birthday to the newest little addition to the Strand family. Congratulations to the Gaines family from everyone here at the Strand!” “I’m so thankful The Strand and The Strand family provided me the ability to stay at home and help with the transition,” he added. Congratulations, Andy! Enjoy your time with Teddy and family and we’ll see you soon.

Laughs with Larrabee Have you ever heard of Marietta’s Lace Larrabee? If you haven’t, you soon will! Lace and I have been friends for more than a decade, after I met her through our fellow friend Beth Keener (you may remember Beth as a finalist on “Live! With Kelly’s” co-host for a day competition, as well as her role as “Annie” on “The Walking Dead”). The two were in the Miss Georgia Scholarship Pageant circuit together (Lace is also a former Miss Cobb County) and Lace’s heart and humor made us instant friends. Lace has always been one of the funniest people I know so, when she ran the idea by us years ago about entering an open mic comedy contest, we absolutely encouraged her to do it. After one win and another and another, Lace was quickly finding her home on the comedy stage. Since that time, she has performed on stages throughout the country, headlined countless shows and is now known as one of the rising stars in standup. In late July, Lace was booked as a contestant on FOX Network’s comedy contest show, “Punchline.” Lace and her team, “The Challengers,” appeared on three episodes and won two out of the three. At the time, Lace said there are only one-and-a-half weeks left of the show but, if it is picked up, there will be 240 more episodes over the next year. Lace posted this on her Facebook page, after her nationally-televised run with the show: “What an unforgettable week in L.A.! ... A huge shout out to Hillary Tribbett & ALL of the crew, cast, contestants, host & creators at ‘PunchLine’ TV show for the most fun on set I’ve ever had! My team went out on a big win on Friday night’s show & I can’t wait to get back to defend our title. Here’s to hoping the show gets picked up for a full season! I’m so lucky & happy & grateful for this time in my life.” And we are grateful for you, Lace! Keep on rockin’! Lace’s upcoming shows can be found at lacelarrabee.com. Making a splash. For this year’s MDJ Kickoff 2017 football preview, photographer and images editor Kelly J. Huff wanted to incorporate water into the Dynamite Dozen photo shoot. Here, he photographs Justin Fields, quarterback at Harrison High School. During the photo shoot, Huff used roughly 200 water balloons to capture images of Cobb County’s top football players. Bonus? No Photoshop here, just pure talent. You can find the football guide by visiting www.mdjonline.com.
