What are you not thankful for?
T
here is a game that we play every year about this time on the last Thursday of the month. Most of us learned it in school or around the dinner table with family . It is the “What are you thankful for?” quiz. It is a noble tradition, one that prods us to reflect and remember our blessings. But as much as I appreciate this custom, I can’ t help but be reminded lately of what many of us are not thankful for . These days, you hear so much complaining and bitterness, that the good things are often overlooked and taken for granted. What exactly am I talking about? Let’s start with being an American. Despite which side of the fence you fall on politically, we still live in the greatest country on the planet where people every day are literally dying to get in. Yeah, I can already hear the whining about taxes, the fear about what the government “might do,” how our freedoms are being threatened, etc. etc. Let’s get the rhetoric, anger and fear out of the way. Once that dust clears, let’s look at the bottom line. It is still the best nation. Period. We’ve got political, personal and economic freedom and opportunities better than any other nation in the history of our planet. Are most of us thankful for that? Or just spoiled? Maybe we’ve had it good so long, we’ve taken it for granted. What else am I talking about? We live in an age where the advancements in medicine and science are the best in history. The lifespan is longer, children are healthier, childbirth is safer and they even have lasers (how the heck did this happen — lasers?) to perform noninvasive surgery. Are you thankful for this? The next time you’re in the doctor ’s office complaining about co-pays among ancient issues of Sports Illustrated and People magazines, think about the majority of the rest of the planet where healthcare is poor, if not non-existent. How about central heat and air conditioning? Yep, talk about spoiled, many of us can’ t remember what life was like without these creature comforts. But central heat and air are relatively new inventions. Not even 100 years ago, our grandparents rose in the cold darkness and stoked fires to warm up breakfast. To cool off, they sat on the porch and fanned themselves. The next time you feel like complaining about your electric bill, think about that. The list goes on – cars, education available to everyone regardless of class or wealth (another relatively new invention), more clothing stores than you can shake a stick at, coffee imported from South America, cheese delivered from
Europe, vegetables shipped to your local store from Central America and China. I don’t mean to come across as preachy, but it seems like our nation has gotten a bad case of the spoiled American syndrome lately. Just turn on any talk radio show and you’ll see what I mean. Or read the comments at the bottom of any blog or anyone’ s facebook update. No, I don’t have a facebook account, but occasionally have, at my wife’ s prodding, got on her account to view photos of friends and family. In addition to the photos, I’ve gotten a glimpse of the petty whining that abounds in the digital world these days. “I’ve got a cold. Feel rotten. Ugghhhhh.” “Ate burgers again for lunch. Tired of fast food.” “Job still sucks. Gives me a headache.” These are just a few of the updates I’ve seen and it irritates me to see us living in the most fortunate country in our world’s most fortunate age complaining about headaches, fast food and feeling bad. If you really want to complain, go spend a week volunteering in Haiti, I want to reply. If you think a headache is bad, try serving in our armed forces in bombed-out Afghanistan where explosions, violence and an inhospitable environment greet you every morning. If you are tired of fast food, how about taking a vacation to West Africa where drought, mass hunger and disease plague the bulk of the population. Tired of your job? Try begging on the side of the road for change to feed your family. That might change your perspective a bit. In other words, get your head out of the sand, wake up and realize what you are not thankful for . Forgive me if I come across as self-righteous. I am far from perfect and every morning have to remind myself of my own blessings. I would just like to see all of us take a day this year and really , really look around us and think about what we do have. In other words, think about what Thanksgiving means a little bit harder this year.

Marlow ’s Tavern joins Merchant ’s Walk WEST COBB EAST COBB CUMBERLAND/VININGS SMYRNA ACWORTH CARTERSVILLE HIRAM
The seventh location of Marlow’s Tavern will open this fall at the corner of Highway 120 and Johnson Ferry Road in the Merchant’s Walk retail center in East Cobb. This will be the tavern’s third location in Cobb, joining the Vinings and Kennesaw locations. The restaurant, layout and décor will be consistent with the other two pubs. The Local Three gets a Smyrna boost Smyrna’s hottest deli/restaurant/gourmet experience Muss & Turners is branching inside the perimeter and opening a restaurant called The Local Three at 3290 Northside Parkway in Atlanta. The restaurant will be a partnership between Todd Mussman, Ryan Turner and chef Chris Hall. Hall had formerly worked at Canoe and 4th and Swift. Muss & Turner’s has been in business for several years operating at the corner of Cumberland Blvd. and Atlanta Road in Smyrna. The business has generated a strong following by serving up a mix of high-quality deli foods, great wines and beer and hosting events such as art shows.

You read about the Life University Rugby Team here first folks when we profiled the squad a couple of years ago. Then they were playing well on the club level. But that is all changing. The university announced this summer the team has Notre Dame, LSU, the University of Tennessee and Oklahoma among the teams it will face in 2011. Life will play in the National Collegiate Rugby Association’s Rugby Premier League, an elite 31-team league made up of nationally known universities. “This is a wonderful opportunity for Life University,” said Dan Payne, Life’s Director of Rugby. “To host these prestigious universities on our campus will be a great way to showcase Life University.”

Blackstone carries Bakon Vodka We mentioned Bakon Vodka in our “Classic Cocktails” article in our October issue. But here is a little more detail. Menchie’s opens in East Cobb
Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt, located at 2960 Shallowford Road in Marietta held a grand opening in late September for their newest location here. The Grand Opening benefitted Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta where 20 percent of the proceeds were donated to CHOA, plus anyone who brought in a children’s book or toy received a free yogurt. Menchie’s is an upscale frozen yogurt shop that has a variety of unique features, including more than 14 flavors, self-serve stations and dozens of toppings.
One million visitors and going strong One million visitors have passed through the doors of the Marietta Welcome Center & Visitors Bureau since opening in April 1984, the bureau announced. The bureau recognized its millionth visitor Sept. 14 when Linda and Simon Cook from Streetly, England came into the center. The Cooks, who are visiting their daughter who lives in the area, are on their third visit to Georgia, but their first visit to Marietta. When asked why they chose Marietta, Mrs. Cook said, “We were looking for charming places to visit and Marietta fit the bill.” “This is so exciting,” stated Executive Director, Theresa Jenkins. “We’ve had wonderful visitors from throughout the world and it’s nice to recognize the significance of this event. Marietta boasts a strong tourism economy and it is reflected in the number of visitors we have annually.” Great job guys! Keep on bringing in the tourists! WHITE TURKEY CHILI 1 pkg. dried navy or northern beans (soaked overnight according to package directions) 2 cups (or more if desired) diced cooked turkey 3 cups turkey or chicken stock 1 clove minced garlic 1 med. onion, chopped 1 tsp. olive oil 1-2 finely chopped jalapeno peppers (or to taste) 1 tsp. oregano 1 tsp. ground cumin Âź tsp. red pepper (cayenne) Salt and black pepper to taste Garnishes (optional)
Combine prepared beans, turkey stock, and half of the onions in a large pot. Cover and cook at a high simmer until beans are tender. (1 to 4 hours). Add more stock or water if needed. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking. SautĂŠ garlic, jalapeno, and onions in oil until soft and add to beans. Add remaining ingredients, combine and heat through. Salt and pepper to taste. Garnish with shredded cheese, salsa, cilantro, avocado, or green onions if desired. Serve with warm tortillas or tortilla chips.

TURKEY TETRAZZINI 3 cups shredded cooked turkey 12 oz. pasta (spaghetti, linguine, or fettuccine) 8-12 oz. fresh sliced button mushrooms 3 Tbs. butter 1 cup peas 2/3 cup coarse grated Parmesan cheese 1/3 cup shredded Swiss cheese Fresh bread crumbs (like panko) Oil or butter SAUCE ¼ cup butter ¼ cup flour 1 ½ cups milk ¼ cup cream or hald n’ half 2 cups turkey or chicken broth ¼ cup cooking sherry, vermouth or dry white wine 2 Tbs. fresh lemon juice Pinch of nutmeg (optional) Salt and pepper to taste

1. Preheat oven to 375 and lightly grease a large 3 qt. oven-proof casserole dish. 2. Cook pasta according to package directions and drain. 3. While pasta is cooking, sauté mushrooms in butter until soft, about 5 minutes, set aside. 4. In a large saucepan on med. heat melt ¼ cup butter until just barely melted. Whisk in flour until mixture is a smooth paste and has no lumps. Cook flour/ butter mixture, stirring constantly, about 2-3 minutes. 5. Add remaining liquid sauce ingredients (except lemon juice) all at once and whisk vigorously until well blended. Continue cooking on mediumhigh until mixture bubbles and thickens. Stir often to prevent scorching. 6. Add lemon juice and remaining seasonings (salt, pepper, nutmeg) to taste. Remove from heat. 7. In a large bowl combine the sauce, drained pasta, peas (drained if using canned), mushrooms, 1/3 cup Parmesan cheese and Swiss cheese. Pour into casserole dish. 8. Combine remaining Parmesan cheese with bread crumbs and sprinkle on top. Dot the top with a little extra butter or a drizzle of olive oil. 9. Bake until browned and bubbly on a middle oven rack. (30-40 minutes).

TURKEY AND DUMPLINGS 3-4 cups chopped cooked turkey 6 cups turkey stock* or chicken broth 1 med. onion, diced 1 cup sliced carrots** 1 cup peas, frozen or drained canned** 2 cups sliced fresh mushrooms Frozen noodle style dumplings ¼ tsp. garlic powder Pinch of red pepper (optional) Salt and pepper to taste In a large pot combine turkey stock, vegetables, and seasonings. Bring to a low boil and cook until vegetables are tender. Add frozen dumplings and cook according to package direction.

Add more stock if necessary. When dumplings are cooked add turkey and additional seasoning if needed. *Don’t throw out your old turkey carcass and scraps! Put them in a large pot and cover with water. Add any leftover onion peels, celery tops, and garlic cloves. Simmer uncovered, stirring occasionally, until you have a nice rich broth (about 3 to 4 hours, the longer the better). You can add additional water if needed. Strain and let cool. Use in your favorite soup recipes and freeze any leftovers for later use. **Substitute frozen mixed vegetables if desired.

bowl. Stir until mixed well. Wrap turkey mixture into tortillas and place crosswise in the casserole dish. In a bowl combine remaining ingredients, except for the cheese, and whisk together until smooth. Pour over enchiladas. Bake covered with foil for 30 minutes until hot and bubbly. “I’ll walk out my front door some days and I’m just floored by the way light is hitting something or the wind is moving something,” the artist explained.
“And I say,’ God, I love that.’ And that’s basically how the subject happens.” A husband and father of two, Entrekin has had a passion for painting since childhood. He turned his affinity for art into a profession by teaching himself to paint and becoming one of the most sought-after artists in the nation. The 63-year-old artist grew up throughout northwest Georgia, living in communities such as Shannon, Rockmart, Hiram and Douglasville. As a child, his parents worked in textile mills and moved to follow the next job wherever it might be. While his place of residence changed frequently, one thing that remained consistent during his childhood was his love of art. “When I was a kid, all I wanted to do was draw ,” he recalled. “I had no idea that oil paints came in tubes and that you could buy stretched canvas. I had an aunt who bought me a couple of paint by numbers sets. I didn’t like the colors and I didn’ t like the subject matter on the board, so I would turn the boards over and remix the colors and make my own painting.” A self-taught artist, the extent of Entrekin’ s training consists of some advice provided during his youth by another artist, the late Richard S turges. The 87-year-old

painter chastised Entrekin’s first efforts for their lack of a basis in reality. He suggested that the young artist should pick a subject and paint what he actually sees. The improvement from that recommendation was remarkable and launched Entrekin on a career that put his work in the Spanierman Gallery in New York and in a Christie’s art auction. Sometimes, the artist’s inspiration comes from a moving image glimpsed during a brief moment in time, even if it happens to be in his own neighborhood. “There was a young black lady, a Pentecostal preacher from Haiti, who lived across the street from me and she was walking and she had a piece of cardboard, holding it up on top of her head,” he remembered. “Her name was Magalie. That is a painting that has to be called ‘Magalie’s Umbrella.’ Settings like that get me going to do something.”

Entrekin’s paintings capture the magic of contrast, texture, shadow and light from a scene, much like the work of the well-known American artist Andrew Wyeth. “I’ve always liked old things, things with texture,” he confessed. “If you buy a table that’s 150 years old, it’s almost like it has spirits in it. So, I was drawn to things like that, I guess because of the mood or feeling I’d get. People make the statement, ‘if that table could talk.’ Well, they do. I try to put that in the painting of the subject. And the painting speaks to people.” And while the artist has made his living by painting for the last 10 years or so, he has been able to survive the recession through sales of his artwork as an investment. “Painting is a strange business,” Entrekin explained. “Usually, when the economy is bad, paintings will continue to sell. MOMPRENEUR Achieving a healthy balance between family and a career is a challenge for most working moms. Or, is that simply too much to ask of any one woman? It is not too much for Smyrna’ s Alex Davis, founder and owner of One Little Birdie, LLC. Davis’ s company sells monogrammed and personalized children’s gifts, such as bibs, onesies, changing rolls, blankets, birthday bloomers, snack containers and more. One Little Birdie’s headquarters is her home of fice, next door to the family playroom, where Cal, 4, and Catherine Annabelle, 18 months, entertain themselves while mom works. Many days Davis balances mommy duties with business owner responsibilities, taking advantage of naptime and late nights to get most of her work done. While her husband Chip pitches in at home, Davis churns out hundreds of special order monogrammed gifts, now flying off the racks at Buckhead and Cobb children’ s boutiques, festivals and exclusive sales. Before she had children, the Geor gia Tech industrial engineering graduate was a hospital consultant. She flew out of Hartsfield on Monday, returning on Thursday or Friday to spend the weekend doing laundry and packing for her next trip, and hopefully stealing a few quality moments with her new husband. But Davis knew that living out of a suitcase wouldn’t work forever. “We always wanted to have a family, a big family. I knew I wanted to be able to stay at home with my children, but was not sure if I would be able to do so from a financial perspective.” While on maternity leave with her firstborn, Davis and her husband, a financial advisor , began to explore the possibility of starting a business so she could work from home. “W e looked at all of the numbers,” said Davis. “It was a bit of a risk for us, but we decided to take it.” When her son was born, Davis became addicted to the personalized, monogrammed look for his baby clothes and items. She was shopping on eBay for new bibs, burpies, onesies and blankets, when she had an epiphany . “I realized how expensive all these cute, boutique baby gifts were. I said, ‘Oh my gosh. Why can’t I do this?’” With help from her husband who had experience acquiring start ups, Davis spent the rest of her maternity leave balancing her infant on one hip while drafting a business plan. They scraped up the capital for the initial business investments: a laptop, a monogramming and sewing machine, software, a few materials and eventually, logo design. They recognized the financial risk they were taking. Davis had never even used a sewing machine before.

“We spent as little as possible early on, and as we made a little money, we invested it right back into the business,” said Davis. Davis says being a mom has impacted almost every facet of her business. “When Cal was small, I thought he looked like a little bird,” she said. “I would always say I was going to feed my little birdie. I figured, I’m doing this for my children, so I’ve got to include them in the company’s name.” “As Cal grows so does the One Little Birdie product offering. I started out with just baby items, expanded to toddler and am now carrying some preschooler -aged things like birthday shirts and monogrammed snack containers.” Davis credits her friends and neighbors with giving her the courage to share her first creations with the world in hopes that someone would want to buy them. “At first, I was really insecure. At my first show, I just wanted to sell one bib,” says Davis. I didn’ t know if people would want to buy the things I made.” Davis went on to sell $300 of merchandise at her first show in 2007. She then began expanding her inventory by testing new products at the Yellow Daisy Festival in Stone Mountain, the Jonquil Festival in Smyrna, the Divine Consign Show in Buckhead and Marietta and the Overton Park Artist Showcase in Atlanta. Once she found items that sold quickly, she invested in more materials to widen the selection for custom orders on her website,www.onelittlebirdie.com. Three years later, One Little Birdie, LLC has grown. Today Davis’s signature bibs are sold at Anklebiters in

two independent contractors to help keep up with the sewing, and a sales representative to market her signature bibs to new children’s boutiques. She anticipates expanding into St. Simons Island and Alabama soon. “We have stability now,” says Davis. “One Little Birdie started small, and now is a viable source of income and a meaningful contribution to our family. It took some time to get there, but our goal now is to grow.” Because her work and home life are so intertwined, Davis says finding the balance of when work ends and family begins is a work in progress. “It’ s hard to not always check the BlackBerry, to resist responding to emails as soon as they come through, take calls whenever they come in, even during dinner,” she says. “But finding the balance is important. I look to family, friends, and my faith for help.” Davis keeps a tight schedule during the work week, dividing her time between family and work, and attempting to keep them from interfering with each other. But she is fiercely protective of family time on the weekends. “I work much of the day Saturday and Sunday since I have Chip home to help out. But Friday and Saturday nights belong to Chip and the kids,” she says. Davis is a big advocate of “mompreneurs,” or those who’d like to be. She encourages moms with an entrepreneurial spark to seriously consider taking the plunge of starting their own business. She credits her supportive spouse, a consistent family schedule, her organization skills and willingness to work odd (and late) hours as some of the things that have helped make her experiment in entrepreneurism work. “I think structure and solid organization are very important for anyone running a business out of their home,” Davis says. “Family support is crucial.” “If you are in a position financially to try it, and have solid support from your family, go for it,” says Davis. “I love having my own business. I love that I started something from nothing. For me it’s fun and exciting. Be patient. Plan to experiment. Test the waters and don’t be afraid to fail. Everyone takes wrong turns and it’s just all part of the learning experience.”

It was on this road four years ago that Mableton’s Shannen Fields took a long drive and talked to God. “God, you gave me this desire to act,” she recalled praying, then asked to take it away if the desire was not to be. She’d tried acting many times before, but all doors had been closed. Weeks later God answered when Shannen became Brooke Taylor, the wife of football coach Adam Mitchell. “Facing the Giants,” the moviemaking phenomenon that swept big screens, bucked the Hollywood stereotype of sex and violence and catapulted people like Shannen and Smyrna natives and “Giants” directors Alex and Stephen Kendrick into overnight stardom. “I never thought any of this would happen,” she said. By “this” Shannen could be referring to any number of things. The flashy red carpet L.A. screening of her latest movie, “Suing the Devil,” which she spent three weeks filming near Sydney, Australia. Or she could be referring to the highrise hotel where she lived in for the Sydney screening of the same movie. Or perhaps she is referring to the dozens of speaking engagements that fill her life. An outsider would say Shannen Fields lives two lives. She juggles being an actress with teaching at Whitefield Academy where her husband, Jimmy, coaches football. And then there is family. The couple has two children, Mallory and Jay. It is family and their encouragement and love that keep her going. When she expressed doubts about filming for three weeks in Sydney, husband Jimmy told her to go or she’d regret it. As she taxied toward her gate at the Sydney airport her phone buzzed with a text from her 11-year-old daughter, Mallory, “telling me to ‘open my eyes,’” Shannen recounts. This is something she constantly tells her kids. “At that moment, I did open my eyes, and it was beautiful.” “Suing the Devil” stars Malcom McDowell and opens in theaters in 2011.

That could very well be the motto of the Cobb County Cemetery Preservation Commission, a volunteer commission created by the Board of Commissioners to provide a uniform procedure for the identification, preservation, protection and maintenance of cemeteries, graveyards and burial grounds. But it is so much more than that. Helga Hong, a 30-year resident of Cobb, is a volunteer who leads the Commission and is a one-woman cheerleader for its purpose and for the strict guidelines put in place to achieve that purpose. “Cobb County used to be all farmland and many churches,” says Hong, an East Cobb resident. “People buried their loved ones on the highest ground of their farmland or at their church.” She adds that she makes sure that local developers abide by strict laws regarding protection of cemeteries. “Some developers are very good about it, and others comply with great reluctance.” Her army of volunteers includes Janice Langston, a county employee who volunteers her time to care for the gravesites of people she never met. “I guess I am returning to my grandfather ’s goals and values – to work for your city and county and preserve your areas,” says Langston of East Cobb, adding she often brings her grandson to pass on those values to him. On a cloudy date in early fall, the duo travels to the Noonday Extension Cemetery off White Circle near Highway 41. They meet with several volunteers from the American Legion and walk through the over grown brush, debris and thicket that now covers what was once a beautiful church cemetery. Flowers lay trampled on the ground next to headstones that mark where World War II veterans are buried. “You wouldn’t believe how bad this once was,” says Roxanne Martin of Kennesaw, who represents the Ladies Auxiliary of the Sons of the American Legion. “You couldn’t even see the stones until we used the weed eater.” Why does she give of her time once a month to get bitten by mosquitoes, bees, and other critters? “This is my passion. There’s history here. We need to clean it up just for pride – even if these folks have no family here.”

Kevin Price runs out of the woods yelling, “Move it – bees!!” He is followed by his nine-year -old son, Dylan, who helps clear tree limbs and trash from the graves. Price is coordinator for this cemetery and comes once a month to maintain it. “If we don’t do it, no one will,” he says as he tends to three yellow jacket bee stings on his ears. His son, he says, is learning how to give back. Mark Griffith of Marietta is with the Legionnaire Sons of the American Legion and is responsible for another cemetery through the county’s Adopt-A-Cemetery program. Local church groups, scouts and other or ganizations can adopt a cemetery in their community. The adopting group has a monthly schedule of maintenance to preserve the dignity of the cemetery. “This is history – past, present and future,” says Grif fith. “If we can’t pass on something positive, everything will end up looking like this.” Grif fith says the American Legion’s motto is “Still Serving.” “That’s what we’re doing today,” he says as he points to the grave of a fallen military hero. “The military is our fraternity, like a college fraternity,” says Griffith. Mark Young is assistant director of the American Legion Riders Post 29 in Marietta. He knows all about that military fraternity. He returned from Iraq a year ago while serving in the Air Force. During an economic time when many stores have been forced to close up shop, Nadeau has experienced double digit growth in East Cobb. Manager and East Cobb resident Penelope Mallory explains, “It’s really not surprising. We have unbelievable price points on furnishings that have the graceful and elegant lines of Henredon furniture but with earthy rusticness which gives character to any room. All furniture is made of solid teak, mahogany or rosewood. There is no veneer, no particle wood, and no assembly required. Nothing is mass produced or boring, everything is substantial.” Nadeau is named after French-Canadian founder Tom Nadeau, and is headquartered in Santa Monica, California. In 1991, he began importing hardwood furniture and decorative accessories directly from Indonesia to a run-down storage locker in downtown Los Angeles. Locally, it grew in popularity among designers and retailers who sometimes brought their clients with them to

browse and purchase pieces directly from the warehouse. Within five years, Nadeau had opened ten warehouses. Today, Nadeau operates 15 locations throughout the United States (see specific locations below) — 11 storefronts and four warehouses. Noteworthy, metro Atlanta is the only city that has two locations (Marietta and Buckhead), and was actually the first market to open simultaneously with the original Los Angeles store. The difference between storefronts and warehouses correlates to the size and location of sites, but they house the same stock at the same prices. Storefronts are smaller, more aesthetically merchandised showrooms in convenient shopping centers; whereas warehouses are much larger, usually in industrial areas, and inventory is randomly lined up as opposed to decoratively displayed. The assortment of furnishings at Nadeau is unique and warm, yet practical. Most of the merchandise comes from India, Mexico, China and Romania. According to Penelope, the most popular items include kitchen tables, specialty shelving pieces, sideboards (which also work beautifully as plasma TV stands). Perhaps the next layer of top sellers includes chests, chairs, and side tables, rounded out by such accessories as mirrors, lanterns, iron sconces and fabulous wooden bowls. Product categories range from hand-carved to painted and colorstained, tradintional to contemporary, Shaker-inspired to the exotic. The East Cobb location has also recently added a rotation of wall art created by local artists. Mallory, whose background is in high-end custom furniture after graduating from the California Institute of Arts (the Walt Disney School!), is married to architect Darrell Scott Jones, and they live in East Cobb’ s Sope Creek community. She appreciates the mix of general consumers (about 80%) with decorators and resellers (about 20%), who come to Nadeau for needs from dorm rooms to multi-million dollar mansions. The family oriented clientele enjoys the value of Nadeau, where prices are so reasonable, partly due to direct shipment (rather than via distribution centers), along with no holds and final sale policies.

in this high altitude, extremely dry and sunshinedrenched wine growing region. These majestic peaks, covered with snow and ice year round, provide through controlled irrigation the water source vital to nourish the vine plants growing in the region of Argentina known as Mendoza. Few people know that Argentina is the fifth largest wine producing country in the world and it is only in its recent past that export quality wines have impacted the global marketplace. I can remember my first visit to Buenos Aires in 1974, and the red wines known as “tinta rosa” were not so delicious, often harsh and difficult to enjoy. The chronic political instability, dramatic inflation, and economic chaos have come to an end and Argentina has emerged as a wine force to be understood and appreciated. This sleeping giant has awakened and has set his sights on the USA as thirsty and affluent, eagerly embracing him with open arms. Like tango partners locked in a passionate dance, malbec and Americans are in lock step together, swaying to the music of this seductive grape. The obscure red grape has emer ged as the country’s principal varietal taking on iconic status and catapulting sales of Argentine wine to record heights with no end in sight.

A combination of natural elements are conducive to growing superior wine grapes in vineyards which often exceed 3000 ft. above sea level. When delivered into the hands of skilled international winemakers the grapes are fashioned into fine wines at very reasonable prices due to low labor costs, inexpensive land and the favorable peso to dollar exchange rate. Although Argentina is producing several varietals found in all the world’s greatest vineyards, it is a French grape whose origin is in Bordeaux that is driving Americans quest for red wine values. In Bordeaux, malbec has been a minor player , regularly used for blending with cabernet sauvignon and merlot. Mendoza, Argentina and the subzones of Lujan de Cuyo Uco Valley have unlocked the secret of this mysterious grape. Malbec has become the national grape and Argentina’s wine ambassador. In order for you to understand the personality of Argentine malbec please allow me to introduce you to its basic flavor profiles. The color is deep ruby often with a violet hue, with fruit forward aromas of ripe black cherries, plum and blackberry. Often subtle mocha and cocoa spice is revealed. On the palate the wine is easy to enjoy as it possesses a velvety texture with round delicate tannins. Oak takes a back seat and often is used judiciously to soften out the texture of this remarkable varietal. It is delicious with seared beef served rare. It is the favorite meat enjoyed by the people of Argentina. You will discover it offered in progressive restaurants and it is also well distributed throughout the retail marketplace.

As the Argentine vineyards are located below the equator in the Southern Hemisphere, the seasons are reversed which allow California winemakers to travel there in April and May to oversee the harvest while the grapes in Napa are just beginning to develop. Ruca Malen is the newest winery to enter the Georgia market. Only a fraction of the original door that provided Lin with the inspiration for her business — between $2,000 and $4,000. “Our doors are totally custom,” Lin said. “If someone wants their dogs on the front door, we can do it. We can match someone’s carpet. People can really put their personality into their door.” The custom nature of Abby’s doors and windows attracted Marietta homeowners Bonny and Fred Carr. “We had a standard single door with sidelights that had been replaced at least three times over the years, but kept getting fried and we wanted double doors anyway,” Bonny said. “So, we went with a completely custom design in a nontraditional size. You can pick any scroll you want, which was fun but difficult because there are so many choices.” The Carrs also decided to replace the existing window above the front door, which had been rotted by years of wind, rain and sun due to the home’ s location on the top of a hill. “I grew up in Florida and that may be where I started liking this style of door , but I started noticing it here on new homes and we wanted to upgrade,” Bonny said.
