terling Estates of West Cobb, a senior living community at 3165 Dallas Highway in west Cobb County between W. Sandtown Road and Kennesaw View Drive, will have a grand opening in mid-August at which time 50 residents are expected to move in.

Construction started a little over a year ago on this senior rental community complete with cottages, garden homes, independent living apartments and assisted living suites. West Cobb residents Anne and David Strand will be moving into one of the 21 cottages currently under construction. “We don’t need all the stuff and space in our old home, but we do like the large master bedroom, bathroom and living areas of our new home at Sterling Estates,” the Strands said. “We’re also glad somebody else will be in charge of all the yard work and maintenance. We write only one check, and they take care of everything.” “We’re local developers, owners and managers, which gives us the opportunity to be involved on a daily basis, which is what we love,” said Mike Brown, managing partner of Sterling Estates of West Cobb. “What we’ve learned through the years is that seniors are no different than anyone else;

Dogwoods’ beauty continues into summer By Lee Reich Associated Press

The last of the “hounds of spring” is in its glory. Dogwood. The flamboyant show began back in late winter when cornelian cherry (Cornus mas), a kind of dogwood, swathed its branches in a veil of small, yellow blossoms. That display was followed by one from the familiar flowering dogwood (C. florida), on whose heels, at ground level, came bunchberry (C. canadensis). Then it was the turn of pagoda dogwood (C. alternifolia), its white blossoms on branches tiered like the roofs of a pagoda. Summer is when white blossoms begin spilling in profusion from among kousa dogwood’s (C. kousa) dark green leaves. These

In fact, what we’ve been admiring from all these “hounds” are not flowers at all. These dogwoods’ true flowers are relatively

inconspicuous. The alleged flowers are actually leaves — modified leaves called bracts, which are petal-like in color and in the way they lie in a whorl just behind the true flowers. (Poinsettias also owe their flamboyance to bracts rather than to true petals.)
