What is the Service League of Cherokee County? Special to the Cherokee Tribune Established in 1935 during the height of the Great Depression by nine charter members who were visionaries of their day, the Service League of Cherokee County is one of the oldest service organizations in Cherokee County with a rich heritage of service to the needy and underprivileged children living in our community. Throughout the past 80 years, the Service League has grown from that original small group of charter members to a membership of 100 women, each of whom is required to volunteer a minimum of 50 hours of service throughout the calendar year. Service hours are earned through participation in League-sponsored projects including, but not limited to, the Riverfest Arts and Crafts Festival. League members last year donated more than 10,000 community service hours and raised more than $150,000 through fundraisers such as Riverfest, the “Dancing for the Children” celebrity dance challenge, the Run for the Children “Reindeer Run” 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run and the “Gatherings & Traditions” cookbook, as well as several other fundraising endeavors. The League distributed more than $70,000 in direct aid to local families in need of rent and utility assistance, health care, food and clothing and other specific needs. The League awarded more than $60,000 in grants and funding for community projects to other nonprofit organizations in Cherokee

County that help children throughout the community. Funds were also distributed for the League’s annual Christmas program that provides gifts to more than 200 less fortunate children; and more than $20,000 in scholarships was awarded to deserving local high school seniors. The financial assistance helped more than 1,500 children in Cherokee County. Women interested in membership in the League are encouraged to volunteer at Riverfest. Membership in the League is open in the spring to women between the ages of 25 to 55 who live and/or work in Cherokee County. More information outlining the eligibility requirements of applicants and the responsibilities of active members is available online at www.serviceleague.net. The 2014-15 League Executive Board members are: President Melissa Whatley of Canton, President-elect Bonny Spears of Holly Springs, Past President Delane Stevens of Canton, Community Service Chairwoman Molly Mercer of Woodstock, Corresponding Secretary Millie Cline of Canton, League Resource Chairwoman April Turner of Canton, Parliamentarian Patti Martin of Free Home, Recording Secretary Gini Mizelle of Canton, Timekeeper Stephanie Bagwell of Canton, Treasurer Barbara Jacoby of Lake Arrowhead and Ways and Means Chairwoman Heather Cato of Canton.

Riverfest is Turning 30! Special to the Cherokee Tribune The year was 1985. The Coca-Cola Company was recovering from a failed attempt to reformulate its flagship soft drink into “New Coke.” A red, furry creature named Elmo made his debut on “Sesame Street,” and everyone was humming the popular tune “We Are the World.” In Cherokee County, the Service League, comprised of 40 volunteer women at that time, was poised to celebrate 50 years of service to local needy children and begin a new tradition that would change the face of the League and its fundraising efforts for decades. For two years, a committee led by Pat Gold of Canton had been studying the idea of hosting an arts and crafts festival in Cherokee County to raise funds for meeting the increasing needs of children served by the League. The last weekend of September was chosen for the festival and would coincide with both the League’s 50th anniversary and the release of a new cookbook, “League Legacy.” The festival would be held at Boling Park on the Etowah River. Mrs. Gold recalled how her husband, Dr. Homer “Nugget” Gold, was listening to a discussion about potential names for the festival. Soon Dr. Gold suggested the name “Riverfest,” noting the obvious — the festival was by the river!

Mrs. Gold said, “The budget for that year was $3,000... we begged and borrowed a lot for the first Riverfest. We borrowed a flat-bed truck to use as our stage and moved a gazebo from Brown Park to serve as the showcase booth for our very first cookbook, “League Legacy.” The cookbook and Riverfest were deliberate projects developed to mark the League’s 50th anniversary. We brought together many local civic organizations to help with that first event… we even had a group of folks who Nugget knew that flew hot air balloons and opened the festival with them landing their balloons on the festival grounds.” Much has changed in the 30 years since the first Riverfest. Budgets, attendance, and income from the festival have grown, making it the cornerstone of the League’s fundraising efforts. The League has grown to 100 women and festival features have come and gone, but one thing remains unchanged — Riverfest brings the community together to support needy children.

Cherokee Tribune/Special The 1993 Riverfest Arts & Crafts Committee included: (front row, left to right) Lynda McFarland, Marlene Hefner, Susan Dreschel and Sally Bradshaw; (back row, left to right) Charlotte Sparks, Teresa Clark, Joan Duff, Dianne Murphy and Carolyn Weaver.

Riverfest 2014 chair Stephanie Bagwell said: “It’s a testament to our community’s commitment to its children that Riverfest has stood the test of time. The community comes together to support both the League and the future of the community — our children.”

Riverfest Celebrates Best of Southeast in Landmark 30th Year

Special to the Cherokee Tribune

The Service League of Cherokee County showcases the Southeast’s best arts, crafts and gourmet products during the annual Riverfest festival. In its landmark 30th year, Riverfest will present a meticulously curated lineup of vendors, many of whom are new and several of whom have been exhibiting with the show across all three decades. More than 130 exhibitors just for the Arts and Crafts Area were selected for this year’s show, with determinations made by a jury to ensure only handcrafted, unique items of the highest quality would be available to shoppers. Riverfest 2014 welcomes a bevy of talented new exhibitors and a greater variety of merchandise…just in time for the holiday shopping season. “Celebrating this landmark 30th anniversary of Riverfest, the 2014 Arts and Crafts Area is a thoughtfully curated line-up of incredibly talented vendors from years past and present,” said April Turner, Chairwoman of Arts and Crafts, for which Kim Fowler and Laura Stanley serve as Vice Chairwomen. “Many of our vendors in this year’s show have been with us for almost all of those 30 years, while others have come on board in the more recent past — and some even this year — as Riverfest has gained traction and recognition as a high quality arts and crafts show that has the sole purpose

of raising money for needy children here in Cherokee County. Last year’s show marked a record-breaking profit for which the League was honored to be able to direct back into the community to help hundreds of children, and the success of that event has attracted even more attention and high quality vendors to this year’s show. This year’s lineup is sure to be a spectacular one that will please all shoppers and supporters of Riverfest.” Some of the new vendors that organizers are introducing this year include: Aly Chandler Designs, Dixstyx, Easycare Tablecloths, Sweet Valley Bonsai Nursery and Woofs-n-Wags Boutique. Aly Chandler Designs of Canton will debut her first booth ever at Riverfest, featuring her stunning custom hand-painted guitars. 30th Riverfest Children’s Area Bigger and Better than Ever

Special to the Cherokee Tribune

The Children’s Area is bigger and better than ever this year as we celebrate the 30th anniversary of Riverfest. There will be many fun and exciting games, rides and activities for children of all ages. Many returning favorites will be featured at this year’s festival, as well as several new attractions that are sure to be a hit with children both young and old. “I am so excited for the variety of activities we have this year. From dunking your principal in the dunk tank to running in the human hamster balls, each child is sure to have a great time at Riverfest and, in return, help children in our county,” said Children’s Area Chairwoman Hillary Hall. The area’s Vice Chairwomen are Betsy Graham and Michele Webb. Better Moonwalks of Georgia (BMWG), a new vendor from the 2013 festival, is returning this year with nine inflatables, as well as new t-ball, all-star basketball and fast-pitch baseball radar games. Also new from BMWG is a classic dunk tank, which is sure to be a hit with children and adults alike. A schedule outlining which brave participants will be in the dunk tank throughout the weekend is included in this guide. Also new to this year’s festival is a meet and greet with the popular characters “Elsa” and “Anna” from Disney’s latest hit animated film, “Frozen.” A professional photographer will be on hand to photograph patrons with the queen and princess from the fictional country of Arendelle. All-Star Active’s hamster bumper balls were a huge hit at last year’s festival, and they will be returning this year with not only the bumper balls, but also a new addition: the Zip Line Xtreme. These two activities will take place in the area behind the arts and crafts booths. Children and adults alike can each take a turn on these awesome attractions. Service League members, alongside community volunteers, will sponsor booths offering a variety of games and crafts. New activities this year include: Adopt a Balloon Pet, Win a Goldfish, Fly the Coop Sling Shot and Football Throw. Other free activities include a festival wooden “cutout” for a fun photo op, entertainment from Cherokee High School’s Drama Department, and a little “clowning around” from festival favorite YoYo the Clown.
