MODE[PROCESS]

The process of polyPhonic takes after a series of experimental methods with the help of several software platforms. Here is a detailed breakdown of the process: - The chosen audio is imported in Audacity. - A frequency analysis of the audio is executed in Audacity and screen captured. - The screen capture is then brought into Adobe Illustrator. - Next in Illustrator the Live Trace preset is used and the path expanded. - Preserving just the analysis, the rest of the path out screen capture is deleted. - Next just the outline of the analysis is used, here the visible points in where the lines intersect can be observed. - The path outline of the analysis is then simplified and reduced to its bare minimum to encourage a simple and minimal polygonal form. - Square points are used and placed over the intersecting lines to determine a proper center at those intersecting lines. - This simplified outline of the frequency analysis is then exported as an image file. - Next the image file is uploaded into a PROCESSING sketch that has a Delaunay Triangulation algorithm written. - The sketch allows the user to determine points in the window and automates lines, circles, and sequenced numbers executing a Delaunay Triangulation.


- The outlined analysis image file is then loaded into the PROCESSING sketch and points are determined following the sequence of the outline. - After which the finished sketch will produce a twodimensional mesh within the outline of the audio’s frequency analysis. This finished sketch is then saved as an image file. - The file is then brought back into Illustrator to be traced accordingly. - After the mesh is completed, it is exported as a CAD file, Illustrator has a preset to export any vector file into a DXF file also known as a CAD file which can be later opened in any 3D modeling software. - The DXF file now is then opened up in Google Sketchup. - Intersecting points in the mesh is then extruded out proportionally. Outline of the mesh should not be disturbed to preserve the authenticity of the audio’s frequency analysis. - The vertices and faces should be covered in the 3D model, Sketchup’s line tool can be used to auto detect the uncovered faces of the triangles in the model. - If a paper model is required, an unwrap plug-in can be installed in Sketchup. What this allows is at a single click, the 3D model will unwrap itself with folds for cutting on modeling the object on paper.

INSPIRATION

The idea of mapping sound to space is not unfamiliar. The project is inspired by the exhibition Frozen, which showed sound represented as a continous space rather than as a one-dimensional signal. Frozen (part of the 5 Days Off MEDIA festival) is an exhibition of experiments in the representation of sound in media beyond the auditory. It examines the sound signal as a virtual space, presenting possible mappings that visualize or interpret the structures contained within the soundwaves. Frozen was proposed and commissioned by Jan Hiddink and the 5 Days Off MEDIA festival in Amsterdam, and consists exclusively of original work. Representation of sound as spatial structures, realized as physical objects through the use of digital fabrication technologies. Frozen is presented in the Melkweg Mediaroom and at Paradiso. 5 Days Off MEDIA is part of the 5 Days Off festival for electronic music from Wed 2 through July 6. 5 Days Off MEDIA presents three themes: Crosswire, Frozen and Roots.
