You guessed it; I’m nurturing my Christian side at one of Switzerland’s many fabulous Christmas markets. Whether you make it to the loveliest installations in Montreux and Basel, or opt for Gstaad’s unusual Winterzauber holiday market/circus/ice skating rink, there’s a hot drink of your choice waiting to warm those cold hands. Read, Race, Rouse the Revelers! This year we’ve decided to throw our standard release dates to the wind, publishing both Christmas and New Year’s issues of GSTAADLIFE. So even if you’re only in town for the holidays, you’ll have one more reading option in your hotel lobby, passenger’s seat, or cosy chalet living room. Speaking of chalets, we sat down with Isabelle de Sadeleer at her Gstaad home for a fireside chat about competing in the Carrera Panamerica. At the world’s most dangerous rally, Ms de Sadeleer’s unusual blend of steely nerves and delicate flexibility have earned her the elite title of champion. It’s probably my Jewish side that tells me there’s no time like the holidays to talk

The Sound of Music–and Art It may not have the clout of the other festivals in the Saanenland, but the New Year Music Festival in Gstaad is certainly a cause for celebration. Artistic Director (and talented pianist) Caroline Haffner shows us why up-and-coming talents and established professionals musically mingle here during the most festive week of the year. This year’s highlights feature two world premieres under the theme “Cellissimo,” with performances by young cellists of increasing renown. In our Lifestyle section, Januaria Piromallo attends the release party of Generoso Di Meo’s “Cal”—the beautifully designed calendar with world-class oeuvres by cult photographer Massimo Listri. From the sound of it, the crowd was world-class too, and packed with familiar faces of regular Gstaad guests and residents like
Princess Federica de Gregorio Cattaneo, Vittorio Sgarbi and Count Gelosio Gaetani, among others. The Naughty/Nice List Naughty or nice? GSTAADLIFE columnist Mandolyna Theodoracopulos does Santa’s dirty work in “Unus Pro Omnibus” by locating his secret gift list. If you’re unlucky enough to be caught on the naughty list, never fear—there’s always next year. As for me, I must confess I’ve been a bit of both. I’ve been parking illegally at an undisclosed location near the Promenande, without a single ticket to date (hint: Church attendance may have dwindled to make this possible). Yet before you think me a monster, I’ve also picked up after an older lady’s little dog on the sidewalk, so the poor thing didn’t have to remove her furtrimmed gloves to use a doggie bag. But should good old St Nick forget me on December 25, I won’t pout or cry – because I’ll still have 8 days’ worth of Hanukkah gifts to savour. Happy Holidays!

Closure of von Siebenthal Cookshop Yet Another in a Long Line of Promenade Store Changes
After 142 years, Gstaad’s legendary von Siebenthal Cookshop has finally closed its doors. BY GSTAADLIFE
Gstaad’s Promenade has seen many changes these past few years, but none hits home, literally, like the passing of the von Siebenthal Cookshop. The Cookshop (which was formerly von Siebenthal für Tisch & Küche) was a haven for local kitchen aficionados. However, shopping habits have changed significantly over
the past decade, with many homeowners ordering kitchen equipment on line, or buying from larger stores in Bern or Geneva for lower prices. Additionally, many chalets are now owned by jetsetters who spend just a few weeks, if that, in the region each year. Another potential reason for the closure, given in a statement released by the family was the shorter winter season in the Saanenland. Fond memories of the Cookshop will remain with many a Gstaader and Gstaaderin. Its selection of practical quality cookware, utensils, and textiles was accompanied by

This hardbound, oversized edition by author Katja Riedel, recounts the life and times of Lord Yehudi Menuhin. Menuhin, a violin prodigy, settled here in the Saanenland with his wife and children. He founded a small musical gathering, now known as the Menuhin Festival Gstaad, and as the years have passed it has grown to feature concerts with world-reknown musicians and singers.
Superpass is a new combined lift ticket that permits access to three major ski areas in the region: Alpes Vaudoises (inlcuding Glacier 3000), Gstaad Mountain Rides, and Skiregion Adelboden-Lenk. With 188 lifts and more than 630 km of slopes, it’s one of the largest ski areas in Switzerland. The Superpass domain include runs of all colours, with an extensive grouping of beginner to intermediate slopes, making it the perfect choice for families. Prices start at 242 CHF for a four-day consecutive adult pass, with a full week for reasonable 377 CHF and the entire season for just 1170 CHF.

Luxury Arrives in the Pays-d’Enhaut New Hotel Fills Need for Sophisticated Lodging in Rougemont

Overwhelming No at the Ballot Box Swiss Voters Reject Move to Eliminate Flat-Tax Rate
A strong majority of Swiss voters – 59.2 % – rejected a proposal to end lump-sum tax payments for wealthy foreigners. Those numbers were even higher here in the Obersimmental-Saanen district, with 87.8% of Saanen voters, 90% of Lauenen voters, and a staggering 93% of Gsteig voters rejecting the measure. Finance Minister Eveline Wider-Schlumpf, a vocal opponent of the referendum, expressed relief at the results. The ability for each canton to decide on its own whether to offer the fiscal packages ensures that the federalist traditions of Switzerland will continue to thrive. Saanenland City Council President Aldo Kropf, who refrained from taking a personal stance either for or against the measure, still had this to say: “The large voter turnout and high percentage of votes against the measure showed how important this was for the people of Saanen.” Sigh of Relief In the Saanenland The no vote, which continues to allow flat-tax or lump-sum arrangements for wealthy foreigners provided they do not work within Swiss borders or earn any income in the country, comes as no surprise in resort villages, where much of the local population makes a living in the hospitality and services industry. “I don’t have the luxury of taking a moral stance,” says one local handyman who is employed by a family established in Gstaad for fiscal reasons. “If the tax regime ends, I’ll be out of a job.”
While the measure didn’t pass, the Federal Council had already agreed beforehand to implement several tightenings of the tax regime. Currently, the rate is calculated at five times the cost of living, but in 2016 that figure will be raised to seven. Tax Evasion or Tax Haven? The referendum generated heated debate, with citizens left to ponder several aspects of their economic and financial policies. The initiative’s leaders, a left-wing group that included the support of the Socialist party, urged voters to take a moral stance against tax evasion. A key argument was that the policies were unfair to monied Swiss nationals as well, as only foreigners may benefit from lump-sum arrangements. External pressure for the vote came not just from the far left, but from the OECD, Organisation for Economic Development, which equates the regime with tax evasion. Five cantons including Zürich, Basel-Stadt, Basel-Landschaft, Schaffhausen and Appenzell-Ausserrhoden have also abolished the regime in recent years. As a result, more than half of Zurich’s wealthy beneficiaries have left the canton – some choosing to relocate to other tax-friendly nations like Belgium or Luxembourg, and the others, notably Russian Viktor Vekselberg, relocating to Canton Zug, where he is privy to another fiscally advantageous arrangement. Who Really Benefits The flat-tax was originally established in the 1800s to benefit from wealthy English retirées who settled along Lake Geneva.
Records from 2012 show less than 6,000 foreigners benefit from the lump-sum tax regime, which brings approximately CHF 695m into the cantonal coffers each year. The biggest argument to continuing the regime was not this sum itself, but the amount of money these individuals spend on services and products here. A Federal Council study commissioned for the referendum showed they contributed over CHF 1bn each year to the Swiss economy, with the ensuing VAT directly adding another estimated CHF 75m in revenues. This study was disputed by the opposing side, with Le Monde and other media outlets calling into question what they deemed an outdated and erroneous study. Among much commentary in the media, State Senator Christian Levrat mentioned Gstaad as a specific example of the harmful effects of rich expatriates in Alpine resorts. “What advantage does Gstaad take from these luxury chalets which sit empty a good part of the year?” Levrat was quoted on swissinfo.ch. “The super-rich spend hardly anything; they only serve to raise rents for local residents, who pay a high price for this unreasonable development.” All’s Well That Ends Well Levrat’s arguments aside, the lump-sum regime remains safe and sound. Switzerland – and the Saanenland in particular – will continue to remain a fiscal paradise for the world’s wealthiest for some time to come.

Funnily enough, we had a sticker marked “Don’t crack under pressure”, our watchmaker partner TAG HEUER’s motto, stuck to our car. Everyone joked that we should keep repeating it in order to make it through the rally.

How do you feel after such a win?
Our trip was full of challenges and inconveniences; after the first day we weren’t even sure that we’d make it through the course. And the two days following we thought we would have to abandon our car, a 1954 Studebaker is exceptionally dangerous to pilot. That said, we had the entire length of the rally to evolve with it.

How did you meet your rally partner, former Formula One racer Erik Comas? I met Erik Comas nearly 10 years ago at the “Snow & Ice” rally. We quickly became fast friends and started to do rallys together. We won the “Tour Auto” twice, once in 2008 with an Alpine Renault A 110 Groupe 4, and the second in 2013 driving a Lancia Stratos Groupe 4.
How long have you been interested in racing? I’ve been attracted to cars as long as I can remember. Even as a child I preferred little pedal cars and Dinky toys to dolls! This passion only grew stronger with years. I have many hobbies but my real passions are vintage and supercars, as well as animals. With my friends Hansueli Brand and Stéphane Gutzwiller, I founded the Gstaad Automobile Club nearly 10 years ago. On February 28, 2015 we are organising a big party to celebrate this anniversary.
It is true that four-wheeled passion runs in the family, with two of your three sons racing as well? My youngest son, 17-year old Hugo, is also a professional driver – all while pursuing studies at Institut le Rosey. He drives a Formula Renault 2 litres in the Tech One team directed by Sarah and Simon Abadi.
Hugo has also been passionate about motor sports including motorcycles, karting and airplanes since a tender age. This year he passed his private pilot license. My eldest son Jérôme and his friend Caroline also participated in the Carrera Panamerica, at the wheel of a 1965 Ford Falcon. It was incredible to drive the rally simulataneously.
Do you cheer Hugo on as a fellow racer or worry like a mother when he races? My mother’s instinct is stronger than my love of racing. So of course, like all other moms in the world, I’m nervous and anxious when I see him race.
Why do you spend time here in Gstaad and Saanenland? Gstaad represents my roots – I’m very attached to the region. My children were born in Switzerland and spent their entire education at the John F. Kennedy School and afterwards at Institut Le Rosey. For me it’s a haven of peace; I love to come back here after my travels and I always have the same warm, happy feeling to be back in my chalet. My children feel exactly the same way. After living in New York for several years and now London, as soon as we enter the front door they always say: “It feels so good to be home again.”
Do you feel Swiss despite your international background? I was born in France but my great-grandparents on both sides were Swiss. I’ve always had a strong affinity for this country and for the Saanenland in particular – I’ve had a chalet here for more than 30 years now. So although I’m Swiss by nationality, and at heart, I do spend much of the year in Gibraltar, Monaco, the Caribbean, and London, where two of my sons, Jérôme and Arnaury, live.
You appear to be a Jill of many trades. What is your professional background? I studied at an International school in France and later pursed my education in
stylisme in Paris. I’ve always loved drawing and painting, and even started to make the traditional cut-outs, decoupages, when I arrived in Gstaad. I also do a lot of decorating, which is something I continue to do from my home in the Caribbean.
We hear you’re awfully fond of animals. Until last year I also ran an alpaca farm, where we had over 100 of these adorable little animals from South America. I raised them for 25 years – they have truly extraordinary personalities. The social attachments they create could be compared to that of elephants, and their memories too! I dedicated a lot of energy my alpacas, and both my veterinarian and I learned to take care of them over time. Years later, we were receiving calls from other veterinarians and zookeepers from all over Europe, asking us for advice. I still have an immense tenderness for these creatures. I miss my animals every day, but life changes with time – children grow up and our way of living as well.
Gstaad Automobile Club Founded in 2005, the Gstaad Automobile Club offers the Saanenland’s car enthusiasts the chance to perfect their driving skills. Admittance to the Gstaad Automobile Club is by invitation only and is limited to a group of friends who share the same passion for automobiles. The club is kept small to preserve its intimate nature. During the winter months, the club often organises training and free practice days on the ice & snow track at Saanen Airport. Besides these activities, the club organises social events where members can meet with other car aficionados, including staging events which respond to specific requests or needs from members. Even if you’re not lucky enough to score a membership in this exclusive club, locals are warmly welcome to attend public events.

When it comes to Christmas markets, no one does it better than the Swiss. Call it a Weinachtsmarkt or a marché de Noël, but you have to call it superb. BY ALEXIS MUNIER
Switzerland’s seasonal markets fill the streets from late November through Christmas Eve and even beyond. You’ll find anything and everything for family, friends, and your own deserving self at the plethora of colorful stands chock full of local specialties as well as imported goods. main street, you have countless options to choose from – including a wide selection of surprisingly affordable handcrafted jewelry made by local artisans – before you take a break and head for the historic 1890s wooden dome, where the food and drink stands await.
If you’ve got kids, jump on the train that winds its way up to Rochers-de Naye and drop by Chez Santa Claus. You’ll also enjoy the authentic Christmas village in Caux – and its great views of Lac Leman. Last but not least, Chateau de Chillon hosts a medieval market just 15 minutes’ walk further up the lake. Double Your Flavor and Fun – Basel In Basel, twin offerings in Barfüsserplatz and Münsterplatz (by the cathedral) provide two unique shopping experiences. With the city’s historic old-town as a backdrop, you can check out the Christmas stands, many offering traditional handicrafts. Just remember to try one of the renowned Basler Leckerli spiced cookies, washed down with hot cider spiced with Schnapps or rum-infused Punsch. A Delight for the Senses – Bern You’ll find a small gem of a holiday market in Bern. With its quaint setting in the midst of historic 15th century buildings on Münsterplatz, this Weinachtsmarkt rivals Basel’s in sensorial charm. The air is rich with the scent of chestnuts, smoky
incense, cinnamon and pine; the stands are rich with tactile treasures. Check out the main square for arts and crafts, and proceed to Waisenhausplatz for more traditional offerings. The Right Side of the Tracks – Zurich Zurich’s most popular Christmas market happens right in the train station – perfect for shopping on the go. Whether you’re coming or going, you can pick up whatever you need – from handcrafted wooden toys and woolens to a wide array of cheeses and dried meats. The stands flank the show-stopping 40-foot Christmas tree adorned with Swarovski crystals. You don’t even have to leave the train station – but if you’re willing to move on down Bahnhofstrasse, you’ll discover the singing Christmas tree (performances daily), as well as additional market stands.
Winterzauber – Gstaad’s Magical Market Located next to the ice skating rink on Gstaad’s Promenade, this charming market runs through the holidays straight up until January 4. The festively decorated wooden chalets offer handmade gifts and delicious baked goodies. Watch the ice skaters jump and spin or reserve tickets to the market’s clown and circus-inspired theatrical shows.

It’s that wonderful time of year again – when Gstaad favorite Generoso Di Meo presents his annual bal en tete, aka “Head Ball, in celebration of the noted Italian wine producer’s new annual calendar. The glamorous roaming fete pays homage to the art and history of the world’s most interesting cities – from New York to Marrakesh – and this year London won the honour of hosting some 500 guests from all over the globe, including the Saanenland. Among the invited guests were Prince Edward, the Duke of Kent; Princess Beatrice of Bourbon-Two Sicilies; Afdera Franchetti, Henry Fonda’s fourth wife; and the English artist and art collector Damien Hirst, who went undercover in a green Adidas tracksuit. The Courtyard of The Cal Here Generoso and his brother Roberto, both ambassadors of wine and savoir faire, welcomed the elite of the aristocracy at the magnificent eighteenth-century Royal Academy of Arts in the heart of Piccadilly. In the courtyard entrance, guests were greeted by Anselm Keifer’s two huge fish tanks full of submarines, an impressive installation with an even more impressive title: Velimir Khlebnikov: Fates of Nations: The New Theory of War. Time, Dimension of the World, Battles at Sea Occur Every 317 Years or

Hamilton was a diplomat, antiquarian, volcanologist, and Fellow of the Royal Society who served as the British Ambassador to the Kingdom of Naples from 1764 to 1800. Di Meo’s annual calendar, known as “The Cal”, honors Hamilton’s eye for art with its theme this year. “A Grand Tour around Vesuvius” features spectacular photographs of the places that he liked the most – the royal palace, Pompeii, the
ancient villas, and the beautiful coastline – as captured by cult photographer Massimo Listri. Next Year, Gstaad? Last year it was at the National Museum of Warsaw, this year the Royal Academy of Arts in London – but next year this annual extravaganza may happen right here at home in Gstaad. Famed fashion photographer Mario Testino gave Di Meo the inspiration: “Make a travelling party to have your genuine wine from Irpinia (in the south of Italy).” Now, wouldn’t that be fun?

Between-Season Successes Abound

Fourth GYC Centenary Trophy A gentle breeze, warm sun, and blue skies. One couldn’t have asked for better weather conditions for the fourth edition of the Gstaad Yacht Club Centenary Trophy, the true rendez-vous for the oldest boats of the classic yacht circuit and the focal point of classic racing at the Voiles de Saint-Tropez. After some three hours, the first boat to cross the line was Philippe Oddo’s Olympian, skippered by Bruno Troublé. Despite the fact it was her first participation in the Centenary, the very competitive P Class gaff cutter was declared the trophy winner, to the utmost delight of her crew. “This Centenary Trophy is a very special regatta – the pursuit format is great,” said Bruno Troublé as he docked in the St Tropez harbour. “One after the other, we managed to take over our competitors and cross the finish line first.” Yet Olympian was not the only newcomer to display excellent speed performance. Second place was won by Silhouette, also participating in the regatta for the first time. But it won’t be the last, as owner and GYC Member Daniel Heine declared she would be back in the future.

Which means the GYC is the first club to have an Olympic place for 2016. 2) Our youngest GYC Racing team member Nils Theuninck is now a member of the Swiss National team. Due to his excellent results on the Laser Standard in the last 1.5 years, Nils has joined the Swiss Team. (e.g. 5th place for the “under 19 years old” age group at the World U21 Championship 2014) 3) GYC members Flavio Marazzi and Christoph Burger become world champions of the 5.5. metre class. By winning the 5.5 m World Championship in Santo Stefano in September they add yet another title to their belts. 4) Three GYC members were nominated for the Swiss Sailing awards.
5) Congratulations to Dona Bertarelli. After being nominated for the 2nd time Dona Bertarelli won the Swiss Sailing Award in the Category – Female sailor of the year 2014 for her sport achievements. 6) Congratulations to Commodore Peter Erzberger for the Swiss Sailing Lifetime Award. The ceremony took place in the House of Sport in Berne, November 22, 2014. We congratulate Mr Erzberger for all his achievements. The sport of sailing has enriched his life in many ways. Growing up on Lake Thun, the Swiss-Brazilian dual-national’s passion for Starboat sailing began at age 17. He took part in diverse national and 15 World Championships, even finishing 9th in the1980 Olympics in Tallinn, Estonia, with partner Eduardo de Souza Ramos. Wherever Erzberger was working, he remained a devoted sailor – in Brazil building the sailing team, in Caracas leading the PanAm Games in 1983, and later in England forming the Star sailing team. “One should give back in return after achieving so much” is Erzberger’s philosophy – a true great, inspiring others with his commitment and vision for the sport.

Summer and winter may be the Gstaad Yacht Club’s key seasons, yet the happenings in between are a vital part of our activities. Autumn 2014 held many important events that were cause for celebration.
“Our commodore told us that there is no second place, so we have to come back,” smiled Heine. “Many thanks to all who made this fantastic race possible – we look forward to the 2015 edition.” Rounding out the event, the prize-giving ceremony was held in very private surroundings right on the water’s edge of St. Tropez. At the festivities, Commodore Peter Erzberger made an announcement: The Club has decided to launch a Centenary Trophy Register©. This will have the aim

We offer 1-week sessions starting December 14, 2014, each with approximately 30 boarders and 10 to 20 day campers. The children ski or snowboard with professional instructors for up to five hours a day. After skiing, they return to the Lovell Camps' Mountain Lodge to enjoy a number of activities including language lessons in English, French or German; indoor rock climbing, swimming, ice skating, winter hiking, interest groups and our famous weekly disco. Older campers are always enthusiastic about our more challenging activities such as leadership training, survival skills and ski racing.

The Little Festival That Could New Year Music Festival in Gstaad
It may be overshadowed by the larger Menuhin and Les Sommets Musicaux music festivals, but the New Year Music Festival in Gstaad has been providing the region with holiday cheer since 2005/2006. BY ALEXIS MUNIER
In the course of these past nine years, the festival has hosted more than 250 concerts and events featuring 400 musicians during this, the most festive time of year. Despite a limited budget, the New Year Music Festival in Gstaad draws the best in up and coming musicians, who are carefully selected by Artistic Director Caroline Haffner. Under the theme “Cellissimo,” this year’s festival features four evenings of music by celebrated cellists Peter Schmidt, Oscar Alabau, and Francis Salque, amongst others. Two Premieres in Store A variety of styles and pieces are offered during the weeklong festival, including a premiere of Strauss’s Melologhe Enoch Arden (in English) and the Dec 29 premiere showing of the film ’’L’amitié des Titans,’’ about the friendship between Rostropovitch and Shostakovitch (in Russian). Also planned is a celebration of Spanish music replete with Cristina Otero Ruiz-Herrera performing castagnettes.
The opening concert will be held at the Grand Hotel Park, with Russian soprano Olga Semenova accompanied by festival director and pianist Caroline Haffner (Princess Caroline Murat). As part of the Park’s traditional Russian Christmas celebrations, the duo will perform a programme of Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff called “Great Russian Arias.”

Hallelujah! The Swiss have voted. It is still all for one and one for all here in the Alps. BY MANDOLYNA THEODORACOPULOS
Rich and poor foreigners alike are breathing a sigh of relief, at least for the time being. For those of you who haven’t bothered to read a newspaper lately, the Swiss voted last November to keep the forfait, a tax break for foreigners in Switzerland. They also voted against lowering the cap on the number of migrant workers allowed entry into Switzerland. While the lure of xenophobia has yet to prove its superiority here in Switzerland, anti-immigration demonstrations are taking place across Germany in protest of the growing Islamisation of the Judeo-Christian world. Notably, the protesters are not neo-Nazis or right-wing extremists. The sentiment echoes across Europe, but it doesn’t seem like anyone is listening. Not far away, everyone in America seems to be at war over something or other, usually to do with race, and those that are anti-violence are taking to the streets to protest the use of force by the police. Astonishingly, no sit-ins contra criminality have been reported. The American president has granted immunity to millions of illegal immigrants. The American press carry on publishing impar-
tial stories, totally false stories, and biased news reports.
Ahhh, the cultural zeitgeist…. propaganda, propaganda, propagandaaaahhhhhh! How times have changed. South of the border in the Amazon rainforest, loggers allegedly cut down the world’s oldest tree. Conservationists and Amazonian tribesmen were very upset, naturally. But then, as it happens, the story turned out to be a hoax. False news reports are all the rage these days. From The New York Times to Rolling Stone magazine, journalists cannot seem to get their story right. Earlier this month, in a desperate bid to accomplish who knows what, the Spanish tried to tax Google for listing Spanish headlines and both true and false news stories. It is unclear if the Spanish were trying to pay off their debts or if it was a bid to challenge copyright laws. Google was unmoved. Like France, Germany and Belgium before them, Spain back peddled at lightning speed. At press time, they retain their spot on the Google index. While a lot of people think Google is the enemy, I don’t believe they have any idea what they are talking about or have much understanding of how the internet actually works. All traffic from Google is easily converted
to cash. Google is not the enemy. Neither is Paypal, who some believe to be the devil incarnate. But those are simply false allegations made by people who don’t trust or understand the internet. Paypal is a perfectly safe and wholly useful channel for doing business with strangers. Even dear old St. Nick does most of his Christmas shopping using Paypal. You’d be surprised, but Santa’s elves have moved into the 21st Century. They use Paypal and Google and a host of other modern devices to make sure they get toys to every poor child living in poverty. Santa has been slow to catch on considering he is a septuagenarian, but Mrs. Claus gave him an iPad last year for his birthday and he is learning how to navigate using the devise. This year Santa has been busy preparing for his big day. St. Nicholas has been using his iPad to get through his lists - no longer any need to check them twice. Ahhh, the wonders of technology! I have obtained, via an anonymous source in the Vatican, an extract from one the aforementioned lists, and hope to publish it without delay, for the sake of international transparency and for the integrity of all mankind.
