LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR I hope you are prepared for an inspiring year of great artistry from our talented singers, players, and dancers - their energy is palpable as they prepare pieces which will move you, pieces which will fill you with joy, and pieces which will transform you. It is our great privilege to offer our gifts endowed by the Spirit for your enjoyment and enlightenment. With nearly half of the campus involved in the performing arts, we have broadened what it means to be a Monarch and we continue to set the bar higher and higher for our student artists. Our Music Academy, under the direction of Mr. Taylor Smith, continues to grow and serves nearly 700 elementary and junior high students each week. We look forward to welcoming many of these fine young instrumentalists and the Mater Dei Jazz Band, under the direction of Mr. Fernando Martinez, at the choir Spring Concert at the Reneé and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall on March 13. And speaking of the choirs, they will premiere a new work penned by a great friend of Mater Dei, the incredible composer Richard Burchard. The work was commissioned for the choir’s magnificent Madrigal Feast - we can’t wait to share it with you. The dance team is busy preparing to once again host the Mater Dei Dance Classic sponsored by CADTD and have been invited as the only high school to ever participate in Gala de Danza in Los Cabos, Mexico this Spring. In addition to this competition, the dance teams, song teams and colorguard are heading into the competition season with some exciting routines and truly artistic programs. It promises to be a very successful season and so we wish all the dancers our best as they push for excellence from day one. All this is possible only with the superior instruction from our fine directors and instructors, Ms. Kristina Marquez (Dance), Mrs. Aubrey Price (Song), and Mr. Chadd Hartman (Colorguard). We are continuing to build the Mater Dei MasterClass Series, welcoming professional artists and college professors on campus to work with your sons and daughters. The benefits of this program have been immediate, with Mater Dei students receiving numerous scholarship offers, professional gigs, and coaching opportunities. This year, your students will work with directors from Chapman University, UC Irvine, USC, Cal State Northridge, Bellarmine University, 3D Theatricals, the Chance Theatre, Operaworks, and many more - how fortunate we are. We do this for we believe that arts transform people into more complete versions of themselves by awakening creativity, fostering collaboration, and enlivening passion and determination. And so we invite you to sit back and enjoy your Choirs’ Fall Concert under the direction of Mr. Justin Miller, Ms. Amanda Bistolfo and Mr. Kent Helwig. We are indebted to the parishioners at Our Lady Queen of Angels for allowing us to raise our voices in praise in such a beautifully moving venue. God Bless and enjoy the concert!!

Mangia Mangia Restaurant Reviews: Don’t miss this one-of-a-kind, authentic Italian restaurant, owned and operated by two brothers from Sicily. Giuseppe and Pietro Cefalu have been making waves in Huntington Beach for years now. While the setting and the site are casual, the food is classic Italian and the service warm and friendly.
The Cefalus proudly serve only the freshest seafood (selected daily), an array of pastas with mouthwatering sauces, as well as signature eggplant dishes and a famous calamari fritti. This bustling favorite with locals is sure to please. Reservations are recommended for parties of four or more.
After culinary school in Italy, the Cefalu brothers worked in the restaurant industry for years, Pietro as Head Chef of some of the finest restaurants in Italy. In the early 1980's the brothers brought their authentic Italian cuisine to America, Giuseppe working on the West Coast, until finally opening Mangia Mangia in 1987. You could easily drown yourself in Marinara at Mangia Mangia, but keep an eye on the beloved restaurant's daily specials and you'll find all manner of Sicilian favorites. Look for the bucatini with roasted cauliflower, pine nuts and raisins that hews as closely to North Africa as it does to the Italian coast. Or opt for the swordfish with grilled eggplant that's dressed with bright, acidic citrus. When you walk in, the smell of garlic makes your mouth water. One of the two Sicilian brothers greets you at the door. The place is a typical mom and pop restaurant, nothing too flashy other than the flat screen playing tour videos of Italy.

PROGRAM
SPOTLIGHT
Lissa Slay, Director of Theatre Arts
Q- When did your love for theatre begin to flourish? A- I was in 5th grade and my school bussed us out to a local community production of Annie, since our school did not have performing arts. During the production, Annie walked right in front of me and at that moment I thought ‘Wow, this is amazing. This is what I want to do and be able to share this with students, too’. Q- What steps did you take towards the end of high school and early college to further your passion for theatre? A- I ran the theatre department at my high school. I was also in all the performing arts- show choir, concert choir, literary magazine, advanced drama. I also did community theatre. Q- When you first began college, did you know you wanted to teach theater? A- I It was toward the end of college when I realized there was more to theater than just acting. I went on tour working for a children’s theater company, came home and realized ‘I want to keep working with kids. This is really fun and is what’s getting me up in the morning’. And so, 16 years after I got my first glimpse of the arts, I was able to bring busses of my students to a production of Annie and give them the experience I had in school. I’m really here for the teaching part- I want to teach. Article By: Amy Viers, CROWN Yearbook Contributor
Andrea Fouts, Theatre Teacher
Q- Tell me about your experiences in theatre. A- For 14 years, I ran a theatre company as the artistic director. I also taught musical theatre and voice at Orange County School of the Arts. In my spare time, I am also a private voice teacher. Q- Have you performed before? A- Yes. I started in the theatre performing, then in college I realized I really loved the behind the scenes. You know, directing and designing. That’s where it led me. Q- How is teaching different from actually performing? Q- I used to find joy in performing on stage. But now I find joy when my students are successful and when they have a break through and accomplish something on stage that they have never done before. I get just as much out of seeing my students grow as I did actually performing myself, so that’s how I knew I was meant to be a teacher.
