2024 RING OF HONOR INDUCTEES

A LEGACY OF FAITH, SERVICE, AND COMMUNITY

In June, Mater Dei High School was honored to induct The Most Reverend Kevin W. Vann, JCD, DD, D.Min.; Diane and Tim Cologne of Vicki Marsha Uniforms; and David and Jenni Taylor into the 2024 Ring of Honor. These inductees exemplify the values of service, dedication, and compassion that define the Mater Dei community.

The Most Reverend Kevin Vann, JCD, DD, D.Min.

Bishop Vann’s commitment to faith, education, and service has left a lasting impact on the Diocese of Orange and the Mater Dei community. Originally from Springfield, Illinois, Bishop Vann was inspired by his mother’s dedication to education. Ordained in 1981, he went on to earn a doctorate in canon law from Rome’s Angelicum and held various leadership roles in Illinois and Texas, eventually becoming the Bishop of Fort Worth in 2005. Appointed the Bishop of Orange in 2012, Bishop Vann has guided the diocese in its multicultural mission and led the transformation of the former Crystal Cathedral into Christ Cathedral, dedicated in 2019.

Bishop Vann’s warmth and active support for Mater Dei is reflected in his attendance at school events, from Marian Mass to graduations. Known for joining students in musical performances, he has become a beloved member of the Monarch family. His efforts in tuition assistance have opened doors for many students, affirming his dedication to making a Catholic education accessible to all.

As owners of Vicki Marsha Uniforms (VMU), Diane and Tim Cologne have been integral to the Monarch experience. Founded in the 1940s as “Vicki Marsha Originals,” the company transitioned to uniform production in the 1950s to serve local Catholic schools. The Cologne family took over in 2006, expanding VMU’s reach while Diane and Tim Cologne of Vicki Marsha Uniforms

staying true to its commitment to quality and ethical practices. Through their leadership, VMU has provided nearly $500,000 in uniform donations to Mater Dei students in need, ensuring that every student can be fully part of the Monarch community.

Mater Dei is grateful to celebrate the contributions of Bishop Vann, the Colognes, and the Taylors. Their steadfast dedication to faith, service, and community enriches the school and sets an inspiring example for generations to come.

David Taylor’s 41-year career at Mater Dei saw him serve as a teacher, coach, and Vice President of Business Services, where he played a pivotal role in securing tuition assistance for countless families. His contributions to Mater Dei’s financial stability and commitment to providing access to Catholic education have left an enduring legacy. Jenni Taylor, a devoted educator, spent 23 years at Pomona Elementary and co-founded Mater Dei’s Junior Monarch Program in 1999. This summer outreach program has inspired hundreds of young students to join the Mater Dei family, reinforcing the Taylor family’s impact on generations of Monarchs.

Today, David and Jenni enjoy retirement with their grandchildren, future Monarchs themselves. Their commitment to the Mater Dei community will be felt for years to come.

David and Jenni Taylor

“Faith Fest and Family Mass has always been a treasured tradition, but this year we wanted to deepen the experience, making it more than just a celebration—we wanted it to be a reflection of who we are as a faith community. We hold dear to the phrase ‘Once a Monarch, Always a Monarch... From current students and parents to grandparents and Future Monarchs, it was truly special to see everyone come together in this way. I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out and I’m already excited for what’s to come next year.”

FAITH FEST AND FAMILY MASS

MATER DEI’S 39-YEAR TRADITION REIMAGINED

In September, Mater Dei High School celebrated its 39th annual Faith Fest and Family Mass, bringing together nearly 1,100 Monarchs for a day of reflection, joy, and community. Over the years, the event has evolved from a simple pancake breakfast to donuts, and now features a delicious barbecue catered by Newport Rib Company.

This year’s event took place in the serene beauty of the school’s Grotto, the site of the original event held decades ago. With an uplifting praise band performance, Eucharistic Adoration, and an inspirational keynote speaker, the gathering was a true testament of the faith and unity of this Mater Dei Community.

Under the guidance of the Campus Ministry team and Mr. Anthony Bravo, Director of Catholic Identity, Formation, and Retreats, the event was thoughtfully reimagined to further strengthen the community’s spiritual connection. Bravo’s vision played a central role in re-energizing the event, with exciting new features to engage students, families, and alumni alike.

“We loved Mass in the Grotto! It brought back memories when we were there [as students],” said Mrs. Diana Anoc ‘94 and Current Parent.

Faith Fest continues to grow each year, bridging generations and honoring Mater Dei’s traditions while embracing new ways to nurture the community's faith journey.

MONTY AND MOLLY GET A GLOW UP!

We’re thrilled to unveil the fresh new look of our beloved mascots, Monty and Molly! As part of Mater Dei’s commitment to staying current while honoring tradition, we collaborated with BAM Mascots, a renowned design company from Ontario, Canada, to align these icons with our newly updated branding –just in time for our 75th anniversary coming up in 2025. The redesigned mascots feature bold colors, refined details, and a fresh, modern style, perfectly capturing the energy and pride of the Monarch community.

Monty and Molly have a special place in Mater Dei’s history. In 1953, the original graduating class selected the Monarch, represented by a lion, as the official school mascot and gave them their regal names— Monty and Molly. For decades, these two have symbolized our school spirit, and with their stunning new look, they’re ready to continue inspiring the next generation of Monarchs.

Our school colors of red and gray also carry an interesting backstory. It is unusual for a school named in honor of the Blessed Mother not to use traditional Marian colors like blue and white or blue and gray. However, legend has it that when Mater Dei opened in 1950—then part of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles—the school received old athletic uniforms from Loyola University of Los Angeles (now Loyola Marymount University). Loyola’s colors were

crimson and gray… and their mascot… you guessed it… A LION. Who knew?!

Monty and Molly debuted their refreshed look at New Student Welcome Night in March, greeting the incoming Class of 2028. Since then, they’ve been busy spreading Monarch pride—officially welcoming everyone back on the first day of school, celebrating with new parents at the New Parent Social, and firing up the crowds at the first football game, fall sports rally, our Annual College Night, and even a Boys Water Polo match.

On June 17, we also made sure to give Monty and Molly a special shout-out on International Mascot Day! It’s just one more way we celebrated their legacy and new glow-up, acknowledging their important role in fostering school spirit and community pride.

The Monarch spirit extends beyond our events, too! Our student section has been renamed The Monarchy, reflecting our unity and passion, and you can follow all the fun on our official TikTok: @themonarchy or Instagram @materdeimonarchs.

With their vibrant new look, Monty and Molly are ready to lead The Monarchy all year long. Be on the lookout for them at upcoming events—they’re sure to bring even more energy to every celebration. Go Monarchs!

HONOR GLORY LOVE

INAUGURAL ALL-SCHOOL MASS FOR CHRISTIAN SERVICE

In April 2024, Mater Dei High School celebrated our inaugural All-School Mass for Christian Service to honor our students’ extraordinary community service efforts while uniting the school community in prayer and thanksgiving. The idea for the Mass for Christian Service was born from the school’s monthly liturgical calendar. “It was a privilege to honor our students in giving thanks to God for their commitment to service,” shared Ms. Helen Steves, Executive Director of Campus Ministry.

Mater Dei High School requires all students to complete 80 hours of service over four years, but each class continues to exceed this expectation, including the Class of 2025, which served a remarkable collective total of 57,454 hours. Their efforts impacted nearly 1,000 local, national, and international charities, with a focus on aiding the most vulnerable, including the elderly, disabled, sick, poor, and youth. Two graduates (Avianna Echelmeyer and Angelin Tran) achieved the prestigious Monarch Millennium Club by completing 1,000+ hours of service during high school, while another 23 were recognized for dedicating over 400 hours of service. The Mass also celebrated the collectiveeffortsoftheentirestudentbody.

“As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God’s varied grace.”

1 Peter 4:10

Recognizing students for their service not only celebrates their contributions but also serves as a powerful motivator for others and that ripple effect is central to Mater Dei’s mission of shaping servant leaders.

“I believe it was powerful to have students recognized and celebrated for going above-andbeyond to serve those in need,” shared Mrs. Maurissa Talarico ’93 Director of Director of Christian Service and Outreach. “These students are often the unsung heroes who consistently help, serve, and go out of their way to help.”

As we reflect on this new tradition, the words of Jesus resonate deeply: “Amen, I say to you, what you did not do for one of these least ones, you did not do for me. (Matthew 25:45)” May our AllSchool Mass for Christian Service serve as an enduring testament to the power of faith in action and the transformative impact of service.

EXCITING CAMPUS UPGRADES SHOWCASE MATER DEI’S ARTISTIC SPIRIT

The summer of 2023 brought a wave of exciting updates to life on Mater Dei High School’s campus, enhancing its beauty and functionality while celebrating our vibrant Monarch community. Among the updates, the removal of old school lockers has made way for modern improvements that reflect the school’s dynamic and creative energy.

Highlights include stunning new campus murals by Santa Ana artist, Damon Lujan, celebrating Mater Dei’s rich traditions, dedicated art installation spaces in the 200 Wing (home to our visual arts program), and the serene St. Francis Peace Plaza. Located outside the Dean’s Office and complementing the Grotto, the Peace Plaza is a fitting addition funded by proceeds from the All-School Auction, A Taste of Mater Dei. This special project fulfills a longtime dream of our beloved Principal, Frances Clare, whose vision continues to inspire our campus enhancements. Every Friday, our school community prays the Prayer of St. Francis for peace in our world.

Scan the QR code to watch a video featuring Scott Melvin, VP of School Relations, as he shares insights into these meaningful changes that make Mater Dei a place of inspiration and creativity.

“Mom’s Morning of Prayer and Service is a testament to the strength of our Mater Dei family. It’s about coming together to deepen our faith, lift each other up, and extend our love and support to those in need beyond our campus. Service is such a core component to the student experience and we as moms modeled that service does not stop after graduation.”

MOM’S MORNING OF

PRAYER

In April 2024, Mater Dei’s Parent Association Council (PAC) in partnership with Campus Ministry hosted its Mom’s Morning of Prayer and Service, a meaningful event that brought together dozens of Monarch moms for a morning dedicated to faith, fellowship, and service. Organized by the Parent Association Council (PAC) under the leadership of PAC President Leslie Boyd and event co-chairs Elizabeth Pawsat and Monica Peterson along with Fr. Mark Cruz, the event exemplified the spirit of community that Mater Dei holds dear.

The morning began with a beautiful time of prayer, where mothers united in our shared Catholic faith, reflected on their roles as parents and the blessings of the Mater Dei community. The warmth and camaraderie were palpable as participants bonded over shared values and experiences in beauty of our school’s chapel.

Following the prayer, the focus shifted to service, as attendees worked together to assemble care baskets for new moms at Casa Teresa OC. These thoughtful gifts, brimming with essential items and heartfelt notes, provided support and encouragement to women navigating the joys and challenges of new motherhood.

This special morning not only enriched the lives of the moms who attended but also underscored the enduring values of service and compassion that are central to Mater Dei High School’s mission.

INAUGURAL GIRLS FLAG FOOTBALL SEASON

History was made in the Fall of 2023 as Mater Dei launched its first-ever girls flag football team. Following the CIF Southern Section’s approval of girls flag football as a sanctioned sport in February 2023, the Monarchs quickly assembled a talented and dedicated team, which showcased remarkable skill, teamwork, and enthusiasm throughout their debut season.

Coached by an experienced staff committed to promoting competitive excellence and sportsmanship, the Mater Dei girls flag football team quickly gained momentum. The team's athleticism and drive were evident from the first kickoff, as they tackled each game with determination, demonstrating the Monarchs’ trademark spirit.

"This season was a monumental step for girls athletics at Mater Dei. We are incredibly proud of these student athletes for their dedication and tenacity. They’ve set a high standard for future Monarch teams, and we look forward to watching theprogramgrow."

CURRENT STUDENTS

Many girls who joined the program had been playing for years, while others were inspired to be a part of something new. Experience or not, the new program offered an opportunity to meet new friends and grow together both on and off the field. As the program continues to grow, the future holds exciting opportunities to build on this season’s success, inspiring even more young athletes to join and make their mark on the game. The Monarch spirit will undoubtedly drive this team to reach new heights in the years ahead.

“I feel so blessed to say that I was a part of Mater Dei’s first ever flag football team. The sport has not only given me friends, but memories and life lessons that will last a lifetime.”

MATER DEI HIGH SCHOOL’S MUN

GLOBAL LEADERSHIP IN ACTION

In February 2024, Mater Dei High School’s Model United Nations (MUN) team embarked on a lifechanging trip to Dublin, Ireland, and Geneva, Switzerland. The team participated in ROCKMUN, a prestigious MUN conference at Blackrock College, a 167-year-old all-boys Catholic high school in Dublin. As the only U.S. school present, our 65 Mater Dei delegates received a warm Irish welcome.

“This journey showcased the program’s dedication to leadership, diplomacy, and cultural exchange. The kindness and hospitality we experienced at Blackrock College made this a truly special experience.”

Delegates prepared for months, conducting extensive research, writing position papers, and drafting resolutions and speeches. Weekly team meetings and specialized training from Best Delegate helped ensure success. Beyond the debates, students engaged with international peers in meaningful conversations about current events and world issues. “These exchanges provide a unique opportunity for our students to reflect on global issues and how the U.S. is perceived,” Kitsinis shared.

In Geneva, students visited the Palais des Nations, originally the League of Nations headquarters and now home to the UN Human Rights Commission. They also toured the International Red Cross Museum. “These visits connected the theoretical work of MUN with the real-world impact of international cooperation,” said Mr. Justin Deskovic ’08, Social Studies Teacher and Co-MUN Advisor.

MUN trips foster personal responsibility and independence. “By the end of the trip, the student who always forgot their belongings was the first one ready to lead,” Deskovic observed. Delegates also formed strong bonds with peers, creating a support system that extended beyond the trip.

Mater Dei’s MUN program, with a history of travel to destinations like Prague, Vienna, and London, continues to thrive. In March 2025, the team will compete at the Platon School MUN Conference in Athens, Greece, and visit the UN Headquarters in New York City.

The program aims to become a destination for students passionate about global issues. “We want students to come to Mater Dei specifically for MUN!” said Kitsinis.

Through rigorous preparation and addressing global challenges such as the opioid crisis and migration, Mater Dei students build confidence and develop leadership skills. Recent successes include three delegates earning competitive chair positions at the Athens conference. “These experiences prepare our students to lead with compassion and determination,” Deskovic shared. “They represent the best of Mater Dei.” With each trip, Mater Dei’s MUN reinforces its mission: empowering students to tackle global challenges with diplomacy, understanding, and a commitment to service.

CELEBRATING THE CLASS OF 2024

On Saturday, June 1, Mater Dei High School celebrated our 71st commencement exercise as the Class of 2024 crossed the graduation stage at UCI’s Bren Events Center. Surrounded by family, friends, and faculty, our newest alumni joined the ranks of proud Monarchs, ready embark on the next step of their journey with faith as their guide. Enjoy some great moments from the day:

FACULTY SPOTLIGHT:

MR.

JEFF TORRENCE

For Mr. Jeffrey Torrence, every day at Mater Dei High School is about orchestrating magic quietly behind the scenes. As Director of Campus Events, he’s charged with ensuring Mater Dei’s audio visual (AV) needs across campus. Mr. Torrence describes his role as more than just setting up equipment or managing AV needs. "Basically, if something is happening on campus, I make that vision come to life," he says. Faculty, staff, and administration bring him ideas, and he makes them reality. “It’s more than just aesthetics and pushing buttons—it’s about crafting the entire experience,” he explains. Whether it’s organizing a Mass or helping design the flow of a major event, his work focuses on creating moments that connect the community.

“I’m involved in everything,” he shares with a laugh. “If there’s an event happening, I’m probably there.” From setting up lights and sound to curating program music, Mr. Torrence emphasizes that each event is like producing a show. His passion for content creation and music shines in all his work: "At Mass, I collaborate with Campus Ministry to create the right mood—it's all about how things look, sound, and feel.”

When Mr. Torrence isn't behind the scenes setting the stage, he's coaching on the field. As an Assistant Coach with Mater Dei’s Football Program, Torrence finds joy in mentoring students. “Football gives me the chance to stay connected with young people,” he says. “I taught for 16 years, and coaching is my way of being there for kids who are still figuring out life.” For Mr. Torrence, it’s the kids' personalities that keep things exciting. “Football players are characters,” he adds with a grin. “They keep me laughing and remind me that every day can be fun.” Coaching not only keeps him connected to students but also gives him an outlet to continue doing what he loves—teaching life lessons, both on and off the field.

Mr. Torrence’s life story is one of constant movement. As a military kid, he grew up relocating every couple of years, eventually settling in Ohio for high school. He earned his bachelor’s degree in health promotion and education from Baldwin Wallace University, followed by a master’s degree in education. The transition to California came thanks to love—his wife, whom he met through mutual friends.

“Marriage brought me to California,” he says with a smile. “Although, I’m not complaining about the weather! There’s nothing worse than scraping snow off your car to get to work on time.”

The Torrences now live in Orange County, where Jeffrey quickly found Mater Dei during a search for local schools, eager to use his degree and passion for education. What Torrence loves most about Mater Dei is the diversity of the community. “We didn’t have that kind of diversity in the Midwest,” he reflects. "It’s amazing to experience life through the lens of so many different students—some who have everything and others who have very little. It’s a privilege to walk alongside all of them."

When he isn’t running events at Mater Dei, Mr. Torrence is a working musician, performing gigs on weekends. "I perform on guitar, sing— whatever the gig calls for," he says. His musical talents even extend into his work at school, like accompanying Mass or contributing to the Faculty Staff Day of Recollection. "It’s great to be able to multitask—plug in, set up, and go." Mr. Torrence has performed at many of California’s iconic music venues along Sunset Boulevard, though there’s one he hasn’t crossed off the list yet: “I’ve played at almost every famous spot except the Rainbow Room.”

Torrence’s passion for music has been a lifelong thread, tying together his personal and professional worlds. “I grew up creating music,” he shares. “I’m part of the Nintendo and Atari generation, always trying to upgrade our experience—bigger TVs, better sound.” Now, he gets to do that for a living. "I love figuring out how to make things sound and feel better."

At home, Torrence’s greatest joy is his family. He and his wife have a two-year-old son, Jeffrey James Torrence III, affectionately called "Trey." "He’s number nine in a line of eleven grandkids," Torrence says proudly. “Trey’s already following in Dad’s footsteps—he loves making sounds and experimenting with music.”

Though Torrence’s work often takes place behind the scenes, its impact is felt by everyone in the Mater Dei community. From organizing events to coaching athletes, his efforts ensure that each experience is memorable. "It’s funny—what started as a hobby is now my career,” he reflects. “I’ve always been a leftbrained kid who loved music and technology. Now, I get to do what I love every day.”

MR. ANTHONY VASQUEZ ‘85

2024 SPIRIT OF JOSEF WINNER

Mr. Anthony “Tony” Vasquez, proud MD alumnus and long-time member of the Mathematics Department, was named the 2024 recipient of the 2024 Spirit of Josef Award in conjunction with our 6th Annual Josef Day. The day and award were created in honor of Josef D’Heygers, Mater Dei’s beloved caretaker, benefactor and friend who immigrated to the U.S. from Belgium and called our campus home from 1956 until his passing in April 2010.

Alumni, parents, grandparents, and friends of Mater Dei fondly remember Josef and cherish the special memories of his presence and service. To honor his legacy, the Spirit of Josef Award recognizes a current Mater Dei employee who exemplifies Josef’s best qualities: kindness, faith, a listening heart, dedication to Mater Dei, care for our planet and campus, and quiet acts of compassion that often go unseen. Josef's life is a model of Mater Dei's values of Honor, Glory, and Love, and our community remains committed to honoring his story and legacy.

Having returned to his high school alma mater in 1989 as an employee, Mr. Vasquez is a steadfast source of support for students and faculty alike. His presence on campus is marked by a constant willingness to go above and beyond, whether by helping students after school or participating in events that build community bonds. Receiving the Spirit of Josef Award is a testament not only to Mr. Vasquez's impact in the classroom but also to the difference he makes in the lives of those around him. As we honor Mr. Vasquez for this well-deserved recognition, we are reminded of the incredible power of compassion and commitment in shaping the lives of our students and building the Mater Dei community.

Congratulations, Mr. Vasquez, and thank you for being a living example of Josef to the latest generation of Monarchs. May we all continue to be inspired your example and that of Josef’s!
