LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR I hope you are prepared for an inspiring year of great artistry from our talented singers, players, and dancers - their energy is palpable as they prepare pieces which will move you, pieces which will fill you with joy, and pieces which will transform you. It is our great privilege to offer our gifts endowed by the Spirit for your enjoyment and enlightenment. With nearly half of the campus involved in the performing arts, we have broadened what it means to be a Monarch and we continue to set the bar higher and higher for our student artists. Our Music Academy, under the direction of Mr. Taylor Smith, continues to grow and serves nearly 700 elementary and junior high students each week. We look forward to welcoming many of these fine young instrumentalists and the Mater Dei Jazz Band, under the direction of Mr. Fernando Martinez, at the choir Spring Concert at the Reneé and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall on March 13. And speaking of the choirs, they will premiere a new work penned by a great friend of Mater Dei, the incredible composer Richard Burchard. The work was commissioned for the choir’s magnificent Madrigal Feast - we can’t wait to share it with you. The dance team is busy preparing to once again host the Mater Dei Dance Classic sponsored by CADTD and have been invited as the only high school to ever participate in Gala de Danza in Los Cabos, Mexico this Spring. In addition to this competition, the dance teams, song teams and colorguard are heading into the competition season with some exciting routines and truly artistic programs. It promises to be a very successful season and so we wish all the dancers our best as they push for excellence from day one. All this is possible only with the superior instruction from our fine directors and instructors, Ms. Kristina Marquez (Dance), Mrs. Aubrey Price (Song), and Mr. Chadd Hartman (Colorguard). We are continuing to build the Mater Dei MasterClass Series, welcoming professional artists and college professors on campus to work with your sons and daughters. The benefits of this program have been immediate, with Mater Dei students receiving numerous scholarship offers, professional gigs, and coaching opportunities. This year, your students will work with directors from Chapman University, UC Irvine, USC, Cal State Northridge, Bellarmine University, 3D Theatricals, the Chance Theatre, Operaworks, and many more - how fortunate we are. We do this for we believe that arts transform people into more complete versions of themselves by awakening creativity, fostering collaboration, and enlivening passion and determination. And so, we invite you to enjoy this day in the life of our good friend, Charlie Brown. It is a story of perseverance, imagination, and most of all, kindness. Unveiling like a comic strip, there are bits of gold at every turn. We hope you carry these with you as you go into this world - you always have the opportunity to change someone’s day from bad to good with a little bit of care. God bless and enjoy!
Mr. Scott Melvin

DIRECTOR’S NOTES Welcome to the Little Theatre, and to the first musical of our season! As a theatre educator and practitioner, I strongly believe that theatre is the art of storytelling through the human experience. What better way to enjoy the vibrancy of that experience than through the lens of the beloved Peanuts gang? We watch the bossy and strong Lucy fall hopelessly in love with the talented pianist Schroeder, sassy Sally exploring her world - and arguing with her teachers! - Snoopy examining existence from the dog’s perspective, the gang playing a rousing game of baseball, and finally finishing with that one experience we all share, the finding of “Happiness.” And as the Peanuts friends sing, I say to you - “Happiness is anyone, anything at all, that’s loved by you.” Again, welcome, and thank you for spending your evening with our talented company!
Mrs. Lissa Slay
Director, “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown”
In service as your new Director of Theatre, it is my privilege to welcome you to the Theatre Department’s 2018-2019 season! The one running theme of this year’s theatrical programming could be stated as C O M I C. Our lighthearted season embraces the fullness of the human experience, with love and miscommunication in the late, great Neil Simon’s hidden gem, Fools – a play with the tagline “a comic fable.” We then move on to the all-school musical, You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown, based on a literal comic – and celebrating “Happiness” while flying with the Red Baron. Our Shakespeare in the Grotto offering is – you guessed it! – a comic romp through the kingdom of Navarre where young men have sworn off all distractions – including women – for a three-year period. Can they do it? Who knows? It will certainly be fun to watch them try in the delightful Love’s Labour’s Lost. Our Theatre Department also welcomes not only a new season of productions, but also a new season of personnel: in addition to myself, we welcome Mrs. Andrea Fouts as our theatre teacher and the director of Fools; Mr. Josh Nicols as our Head Coach of the Improv Comedy Troupe and Mr. Joey Busch (’14) as assistant/substitute coach. We welcome back the invaluable Ms. Alexi Thomas as our administrative assistant. We in the Theatre Department have a grand vision of programming within many of the structures set in place by our predecessors, including and embracing the wonderful space of this black box theatre. A space such as the Little Theatre is incredible and inspiring – there are so many audience and staging configurations to choose from, something much more challenging in a traditional proscenium theatre. Here, we have an opportunity to create an intimate, high-quality experience while working in close proximity to our audience. Our work in the Little Theatre is solid preparation for the black box theatre in the new Monarch Masterpiece Performing Arts Center. In a look ahead to other Theatre programming, Shortsfest will be presented by the Advanced Theatre Arts classes as completely studentwritten and devised, developed as an ensemble. The spring Dr. Seuss Educational Tour, in honor of Read Across America, will be re-mounted and tour to several of our local area schools. The Improv Comedy Troupe, with its newly-formed Junior Varsity and Varsity teams, will host several Chuckles 4 Charity events throughout the year. Our Theatre Arts Club, under the presidential leadership of Kalusha Brutlag (’19) will announce dates for theatre-related social events, drives, and charitable events throughout the year. She is ably assisted by Lauryn Lilly (Vice President, ’19), Danika McKee (Secretary, ’19), Paige Solano (Treasurer, ’20), Maria Contreras (Publicity Lead, ’19), Gwyneth Stolo (Social Events Coordinator, ’19), and Rory Dahl (Literary Manager, ’21). Thank you for joining us this season. We look forward to an exciting year with these most excellent Monarchs!

Mangia Mangia Restaurant Reviews: Don’t miss this one-of-a-kind, authentic Italian restaurant, owned and operated by two brothers from Sicily. Giuseppe and Pietro Cefalu have been making waves in Huntington Beach for years now. While the setting and the site are casual, the food is classic Italian and the service warm and friendly.
The Cefalus proudly serve only the freshest seafood (selected daily), an array of pastas with mouthwatering sauces, as well as signature eggplant dishes and a famous calamari fritti. This bustling favorite with locals is sure to please. Reservations are recommended for parties of four or more.
After culinary school in Italy, the Cefalu brothers worked in the restaurant industry for years, Pietro as Head Chef of some of the finest restaurants in Italy. In the early 1980's the brothers brought their authentic Italian cuisine to America, Giuseppe working on the West Coast, until finally opening Mangia Mangia in 1987. You could easily drown yourself in Marinara at Mangia Mangia, but keep an eye on the beloved restaurant's daily specials and you'll find all manner of Sicilian favorites. Look for the bucatini with roasted cauliflower, pine nuts and raisins that hews as closely to North Africa as it does to the Italian coast. Or opt for the swordfish with grilled eggplant that's dressed with bright, acidic citrus. When you walk in, the smell of garlic makes your mouth water. One of the two Sicilian brothers greets you at the door. The place is a typical mom and pop restaurant, nothing too flashy other than the flat screen playing tour videos of Italy.

I can’t wait to perform with my All Male Hip Hop teammates and create lifelong memories dancing abroad.” – Anthonie Chavez, All Male Hip Hop Captain, Class of 2019 The Dance Programs offers elective courses for all levels of dancers, as well as the Nationally-ranked Dance Team and All Male Hip Hop Teams, under the direction of Ms. Kristina

Through the generous arrangement of Mater Dei Dance parent and Artistic Director/Founder Christina Lyon, Mater Dei students will work directly with underprivileged youth in the Los Cabos community, teaching various dance techniques to the students at Danza Que da Esperanza, a local dance studio. They will also have the opportunity to learn from worldclass professional dancers, collaborate with students from the Glorya Kaufman School of Dance at USC, and showcase their own talents during the opening sequence of the Gala, held at the beautiful Viceroy Hotel Los Cabos. Our students will be exposed to rich collaborative affairs which transcend languages, movement styles, and cross-cultural backgrounds.
