LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

Welcome back to another year in the Mater Dei Theatre Program and to our 2019-2020 season! This year’s theatre programming theme is “the ties that bind.” How are we, as friends, family, and humans, tied to one another? Our season opens by exploring this theme through William Shakespeare’s classic Much Ado About Nothing. How do language and communication bind us together - or tear us apart? Are respect and reputation more important than love? We then move on to the all-school play, The Diviners, where we examine the ties of friendship, faith, and fate in this tragic tale of a boy who has a gift for “divining” water and the preacher who befriends him. In our final production of the 19-20 season, we take a darkly comic look at the macabre family ties that bind in the all-school musical, The Addams Family. Our program has adopted a mission statement that we, Mater Dei Theatre, are dedicated to telling authentic stories that engage, entertain, and enrich our community. In addition to our amazing scholar-artists, our theatre program is comprised of several wonderful people who dedicate themselves to the telling of these theatrical stories: Mrs. Andrea Fouts, the teacher of our newly-minted Honors Musical Theatre class and director of The Addams Family; Ms. Alexi Thomas as the production assistant on all of our productions in addition to serving as the program’s Theatre Assistant and teaching full-time English; we welcome back Ms. Susanna Vaughan, who previously directed voice and movement on last season’s Love’s Labour’s Lost and joins us this year as the director of Much Ado About Nothing; and as the Director of Theatre, I will continue as the mentor/advisor to our Cappies team, ComedySportz, and Thespian Troupe, and will direct The Diviners. In a look ahead to other Theatre programming, Shortsfest will be presented by the Honors Theatre class, completely developed and devised as an ensemble. In addition, the Honors Musical Theatre will delight our community with performances throughout the year. The spring Children’s Theatre Tour, in honor of Read Across America, has already had booking requests to tour several of our local area schools. Our improv troupe has unanimously agreed to form a ComedySportz team and is looking forward to bringing matches to our Mater Dei community throughout the season. Our Thespian Troupe #3464 and Theatre Arts Club, under the excellent leadership of Paige Solano (President, ’20) will announce dates for Theatre-related social events, drives, and charitable events throughout the year. She is supported by Vice President Cindy Garcia (’20), Rory Dahl (ComedySportz Student Manager & Secretary, ’21), Caroline Kawabe (Treasurer, ’21), Fiona Mulholland (’20) and London Coco Griffin (‘22) as our Improv Liaisons, and Gwen Smith (Lead Cappies Critic, ’20). I’d like to extend a warm salute of gratitude to our Mater Dei Administration, Mr. Scott Melvin, Mrs. Marisa Winch (‘96), our terrific Theatre Parents™ Al and Yvonne Verkuylen, and to all of our Theatre families and donors for their support of the Theatre Department. Your encouragement and nurturing of our scholar-artists is deeply appreciated and makes serving our community an absolute joy.

Thank you for joining us this season. We look forward to a wonderful year with these most talented Monarchs!

Mrs. Lissa Slay, M.S.Ed., Director of Theatre

Director’s Notes This beautiful play explores the many ties that bind us to one another - through faith, family, friendship, love, and community - and the examining of those ties, for a greater purpose. Each character in this play is divining in some form or fashion: Buddy divines water, Basil looks to his land for answers, Jennie Mae and Darlene look for connection in a place of limited options, Showers searches for his identity after faith, a community pursues that same faith, in hopes of revitalization and revival in a town aptly named Zion, all in the face of the Great Depression. “These are good and simple people. They have nothing but the best of intentions.” Something about playwright Jim Leonard, Jr.’s description of the characters of The Diviners resonated with me and formed the foundation for the vision of this production: Celebrate this community, tell their story as simply and truthfully as possible, while honoring their humanity. What does that look like in a rehearsal room? In ours, there was a lot of laughter and unexpectedly humorous - and poignant - moments. There was exploration, discovery, and joy. Scenes shifted under live musical accompaniment and the company didn’t shy away from the challenge. I watched the cast treat these characters with respect even while navigating an unfamiliar time period and dialect. Our crew has worked tirelessly to honor the time period and the characters, researching designs, sounds, fabrics, and other production elements in order to tell the story as truthfully as possible. We hope you enjoy our retelling of this moving story. May you, and all of our audience, family and friends, rest easy in the divine purpose for which He has called you.

- Mrs. Lissa Slay

Setting

The play takes place in the 1930s, in the homes, fields, and public gathering places of the mythical southern Indiana town of Zion, population forty.

Synopsis

This marvelously theatrical play is the story of a disturbed young man and his friendship with a disenchanted preacher in southern Indiana in the early 1930s. When the boy was young he almost drowned. This trauma, and the loss of his mother in the same accident, has left him deathly afraid of water. The preacher, set on breaking away from a long line of Kentucky family preachers, is determined not to do what he does best. He works as a mechanic for the boy’s father. The town doesn’t have a preacher and the women try to persuade him to preach – while he tries to persuade the child to wash. When the preacher finally gets the boy in the river and is washing him, the townspeople mistake the scene for a baptism. They descend on the event and, in the confusion, the boy drowns. - from Samuel French

Isabelle Buchanan (Jennie Mae Layman)

Isabelle is a junior and this is her sixth play at Mater Dei. She adores working with this incredible program year after year and finding the true meaning of an ensemble show after show. She can’t describe the overcoming joy she feels being a part of such a talented and welcoming department. Theatre is Isabelle’s number one hobby, whether it’s acting with pride on stage or watching in awe from the audience. She couldn’t be more ecstatic for everyone to see the true wonder that is The Diviners! It has been such an unbelievably marvelous adventure for her to help put this heartfelt and powerful production together, and she couldn’t have done it without the constant support from her fellow cast, crew, and management team. Theatre is her “sunshine” and she would like to especially thank the inspiring audience for being a part of the experience, so she sincerely hopes everyone appreciates The Diviners as much as she does!

Noah Dang (Melvin Wilder)

Noah could not be more excited to perform as Melvin Wilder in Mater Dei’s production of “The Diviners.” He is now in his sophomore year. His previous experience includes acting in the role of Mishkin in “Fools,” Dumaine in “Love’s Labour’s Lost,” and Benedick in “Much Ado About Nothing.” He would like to thank his family for always supporting him in his artistic endeavors; Mrs. Slay for being an amazing director who helped him grow and flourish as an actor; the designers, technicians, and artists for truly making this production possible; and finally, the cast. Though rehearsal could be painstaking and exhausting, they made each one an enjoyable experience. He is glad you could come and watch and hopes you enjoy the show!

She would also like to extend her gratitude to Mrs. Slay, Mr. Rice, Ms. Thomas and the amazing cast and crew for all of their hard work in putting this show together. She hopes you enjoy the show!

PERFORMING ARTS

2019 2020

LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

It is my sincere pleasure to welcome you to what promises to be a year full of beauty, a year full of dialogue, a year full of joy. Through dance and song, the visual and aural, and playing in every sense of the word, it is our hope that you may quiet the cares of a noisy world behind and find peace in our halls. It is our mission here in the arts to empower ambassadors of change through artistic expression, engaging our community to experience, reflect and react. Just as a kaleidoscope, we pray our events shift the lens of your perception, adding new opportunities to wonder and dream. And as we dream of the imminent construction of the Monarch Masterpiece, our new home for the performing arts, we give thanks for the countless patrons, alumni, grandparents and all who support our young artists down the path of excellence. They perform for you, they bring their greatest for you - thank you for being that stimulus for success. Theatre has a much more divine duty than to merely entertain, and so I encourage you, as you receive this beautifully crafted play this evening, to discover for yourself the great intricacies that make community and humanity so beautiful. Through faith and doubt, pain and love, we gain

a greater understanding of the people around us, inciting dialogue and consequently a stronger connection to each other. Thank you again for supporting our accomplished thespians and for being a part of their storytelling tonight.

Mangia Mangia Restaurant Reviews: Don’t miss this one-of-a-kind, authentic Italian restaurant, owned and operated by two brothers from Sicily. Giuseppe and Pietro Cefalu have been making waves in Huntington Beach for years now. While the setting and the site are casual, the food is classic Italian and the service warm and friendly.

The Cefalus proudly serve only the freshest seafood (selected daily), an array of pastas with mouthwatering sauces, as well as signature eggplant dishes and a famous calamari fritti. This bustling favorite with locals is sure to please. Reservations are recommended for parties of four or more.

After culinary school in Italy, the Cefalu brothers worked in the restaurant industry for years, Pietro as Head Chef of some of the finest restaurants in Italy. In the early 1980's the brothers brought their authentic Italian cuisine to America, Giuseppe working on the West Coast, until finally opening Mangia Mangia in 1987. You could easily drown yourself in Marinara at Mangia Mangia, but keep an eye on the beloved restaurant's daily specials and you'll find all manner of Sicilian favorites. Look for the bucatini with roasted cauliflower, pine nuts and raisins that hews as closely to North Africa as it does to the Italian coast. Or opt for the swordfish with grilled eggplant that's dressed with bright, acidic citrus. When you walk in, the smell of garlic makes your mouth water. One of the two Sicilian brothers greets you at the door. The place is a typical mom and pop restaurant, nothing too flashy other than the flat screen playing tour videos of Italy.

DANCE STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

What have you learned being a part of this team? I learned to love dance and have fun with it. Coming from a past in dance where I felt judged and unaccepted, I’ve really been able to open up my perspective and see positivity. It’s uplifting to have a coach that loves you and wants the best for you, pushing you in a motivating way that doesn’t deteriorate your character. – Lauren McGrath, senior I have learned the importance of being a good teammate. Being a teammate on the dance team, you have to be focused, determined, hardworking, reliable, and you have to put full commitment into your team and your responsibilities as a dancer and team member. You have to be accountable for your growth, responsibilities, and mistakes. All your actions, attitude, and effort effect the team. – Kyla Martinez, senior

What has been your most memorable on-stage moment? My most memorable on-stage moment was last year at Soul Stories. The whole dance program came on stage for a final performance and there were confetti canons that surprised us all. It was a great way to end the dance season! – Payton Curley, senior My most memorable onstage moment has been dancing in Cabo at the Gala de Danza. I loved dancing in an environment where everyone had the same passion and love for dance and I will never forget the contagious energy every dancer had on stage that made each second of our performance flourish more and more. My second most memorable onstage moment has been student choreography. I got to choreograph my own dance and create my own story. When I was onstage I felt something I had never felt before. I was dancing and I was free. I felt all the emotions and became the character. I felt like a new person. – Kyla Martinez, senior

What has been your favorite bonding experience with your teammates so far? So far, my favorite bonding experience with my teammates would have to be football games. No matter if we’re performing or not, the other members of the team always show up to support one another. The parents always know how to make the tailgates so special and they always put in so much effort to make it look amazing! – Faith McGrath, senior My favorite bonding experience with my teammates so far has been the Disney day. I loved getting to hang out with my teammates in an outside setting. – Elle Fletcher, sophomore

How do you plan on continuing with dance in the future? I plan on going into the Sports Medicine/Dance Science field. I don’t necessarily want to dance professionally with a company, but I would love to stay involved in the dance world. I have always been interested in the anatomy aspect of dance, and I am hoping to pursue a career in that field. – Sophie Bartlett, sophomore In the future, I want to run my own dance studio so that I can share my love and passion for this art form to future generations. – Kelley Rood, sophomore I hope to continue my journey in dance through inspiration. I want other to know that it doesn’t matter what you look like or what anyone else says as long as it makes you happy and your heart is content. – Faith McGrath, senior

What are you looking forward to most this season? Every single competition, bonding event, etc., as I have a deep love for the boys, and the entire program as a whole. This program has brought me places I never dreamed of, and I wish to honor that with dedication, passion, etc. – Jonathan Phu, sophomore I am looking forward to all the great opportunities we have offered to us, like the trips, classes with guest teachers, and more. I hope to improve and learn a lot and that’s what I’m excited about– to come in next year even stronger. – Leah Von Rotz, freshman

TAYLOR SMITH, Director KEN PARKER, Instructor

PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT

The Guitar program is not a traditional music class. It is geared towards students who want to learn guitar and explore commercial music. Many of our students are heavily involved in sports, clubs, academic organizations, and more. The MDHS Guitar program has grown considerably to over 70 students from it's beginning only three years ago. Most students start our program in Beginning Guitar and work their way to the Advanced Guitar Media Production class. Each class level fosters a positive and collaborative environment for students to explore their musical talents, performance abilities, and individual creativity. The guitar program performs at several school events, games, community events, fundraisers and concerts. Students work towards programming a fully- themed concert where they are able to showcase their hard work, creativity, and original compositions.

WAYS TO BE A PART OF THE GUITAR PROGRAM 1. Beginning Guitar - No experience necessary. Students learn basic fundamentals and tend to pick information up fast, joining performing groups in other classes. 2. I ntermediate Guitar - Opportunities to perform more frequently in large and small groups around campus and in the community, while collaborating with other arts programs at Mater Dei High School. Students also begin learning the basics of piano, drums, and bass guitar. 3. A dvanced Guitar Media Production - Focus on learning how to arrange, compose and organize music. Many students play multiple instruments, while building a repertoire and online artist profile. This class prepares students for the live gigs, performances and collaborations outside of Mater Dei and beyond graduation. 4. Code Red- The official Mater Dei Rock Band performs as pregame entertainment at home varsity football games, all-school lunch events, rallies and more. This group is composed of students who attend weekly rehearsals and are motivated to follow a career in music after high school.

THE ONLY INGREDIENT THAT’S HARD TO PRONOUNCE AT CHIPOTLE IS “CHIPOTLE.”

Cheddar cheese Cheese cultures

Distilled vinegar

Corn masa flour

Chipotle was born of the radical belief that there is a connection between how food is raised and prepared, and how it tastes. These principles result in real flavors that tantalize the tongue, salsas that singe the taste buds, and real ingredients that are responsibly sourced.

Lemon juice

That’s why Chipotle has always been committed to preparing real food made with real ingredients. You know, the kind you can recognize and pronounce. In fact, we’ve listed every single one of them right here. We wish everyone would do the same.
