LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

Welcome to Mater Dei Dance Program’s Spring Dance Concert: SOUL STORIES. The 2019/2020 season has brought the program many new additions, from support staff to course offerings. We premiered our first ever All Female Hip Hop Team this year, under the brilliant direction of Mrs. Essence Jasperse. We are thrilled by the reception of this new team and look forward to the growth of this aspect of the program. With the gracious support of the Mater Dei administration, we were also able to add two full periods of Yoga classes into our curriculum. It has been a joy to teach alongside Ms. Jackie Hamilton in the development of this course, which has served over 65 Mater Dei students in both the physical & mental aspects of traditional Yogic practices. We also welcomed All Male Hip Hop Coach, Kai Cameron as well as Dance Assistant, Sara Gentile to our growing coaching staff. They both have brought a level of talent, professionalism and passion that has enhanced the program exponentially. In the Fall, we implemented our Master Class series, which allowed the talents of industry professionals to work directly not only with our students, but with participants from the local community as well. This year’s guest artists ranged from the L.A. based break-dancing duo “Jay Brothers” & current USC Glorya Kaufman School of Dance Senior, Zackary Torres, to Orange County based artists such as Jace Zeimantz, Rochelle Mapes, & Tyson Garner. The Spring semester was complete with competitions & special events such as Nike Extravaganza and the All School Auction. As we look ahead to Summer, we are thrilled to share that we will be traveling to London as part of our Summer Educational Series! Students will participate in a two-day dance science intensive at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music & Dance, see shows on the West End, attend classes at local dance studios, and experience the role of arts & culture beyond Orange County. But for tonight, we will highlight the many talents of our talented Dance Program students. For some, it will be their premiere experience performing for an audience. For others, it will serve as an emotional culmination of nearly a year’s worth of rehearsals, rallies, competitions, off-campus performances, and the like. From our Dance Elective students, to our Team members, we truly hope you are able to connect with the Soul Stories presented here tonight. Tonight’s production could not have been made possible without support from the following people, whom I would like to personally thank: The Mater Dei Dance families for their continued enthusiasm, helpfulness, and love that has carried me through the year. Mr. Scott Melvin, for your consistent leadership and openness to bringing my visions to fruition. Mrs. Marisa Winch, for your tireless efforts in keeping the wheels of this operation turning. To the Coaching staff, for your commitment to excellence in all things from choreography to student wellbeing. The Mater Dei administration, for their continued belief in this program and support of the transformational power of the arts. And to my family: Thank you for never questioning my passion and desire to design my dreams through dance. The confidence you instilled in me to follow my unique path is what I hope to pass along to my students, in whatever vocation they may choose. And with that, sit back, relax, and enjoy Mater Dei Dance Program’s Spring Dance Concert: SOUL STORIES. Sincerely in Mater Dei, Kristina Marquez, Director of Dance Programs

DANCE SEASONAL SPOTLIGHT

For 10 days this summer, members of our Mater Dei Dance Program will travel to London to get a different perspective of dance culture abroad. “Students will gain exposure into the arts culture beyond Orange County,” says Mater Dei Director of Dance, Ms. Kristina Marquez. Among other dance activities scheduled, students will participate in a two-day Dance Science Intensive, hosted by Ms. Marquez’ alma mater, Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music & Dance in London. In doing so, they will gain access to cutting edge equipment, facilities & faculty members who will illuminate career options in the sports & dance medicine fields as well as enhance their overall knowledge of the dance world.

Senior Talia Solis and sophomores Kelley Rood & Angelina Lyon gave us insight as to what they expect to gain from this cultural and academic adventure. WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO ON THIS TRIP? Rood: Overall, I am most looking forward to expanding my horizons during this trip. I cannot wait to try new things, take risks, and experience unique opportunities. HAVE YOU EVER STUDIED DANCE INTERNATIONALLY BEFORE? Lyon: I have studied dance internationally once in Switzerland. It was a great experience for me, and I hope I will receive the same impact from this trip. Rood: I have never studied dance internationally before, and I am beyond excited to do so for the first time! Solis: I studied dance internationally [on our team trip] last year in Cabo San Lucas at Gala de Danza. It was one of the most fulfilling experiences for me because it helped me appreciate the universality of dance. Because of the language barrier, love of dance was almost everyone’s only common trait. I was able to create lasting friendships and memories with the dancers there, even without being able to verbally communicate with them.

LEARNING FROM THE CLASSES AT TRINITY LABAN AND THE LOCAL DANCE STUDIOS? Lyon: I am looking forward to learning to push my limits when dancing and going out of my comfort zone. Rood: I am looking forward to learn all about dance science and injury prevention because they are two topics that I believe are necessary to deeply understand in order to fulfill a healthy, successful career. I am also really looking forward to taking classes at the local dance studios to get a glimpse into styles that are new and different than what I am used to at my home studio. HOW DO YOU THINK THIS TRIP WILL IMPACT YOUR DANCE EDUCATION? Solis: I think this trip will allow me to dance to the best of my ability by utilizing the science behind it and teach me how to protect my body as a dancer. This trip will give me insight into various cultures and differences in the dance world. I am excited to expand my knowledge and appreciate new cultures. Lyon: I think this trip will expose me to new views of dance and different ways of thinking about my movement. WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO GAIN FROM THIS EXPERIENCE? Solis: I’m looking forward to being able to understand the science behind what I do almost every day and to broaden my knowledge of dance science. Develop friendships with the dancers in London. I love learning about similarities and differences of life in different parts of the world.

PERFORMING ARTS

2019 2020

LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

It is my sincere pleasure to welcome you to what promises to be a year full of beauty, a year full of dialogue, a year full of joy. Through dance and song, the visual and aural, and playing in every sense of the word, it is our hope that you may quiet the cares of a noisy world behind and find peace in our halls. It is our mission here in the arts to empower ambassadors of change through artistic expression, engaging our community to experience, reflect and react. Just as a kaleidoscope, we pray our events shift the lens of your perception, adding new opportunities to wonder and dream. And as we dream of the imminent construction of the Monarch Masterpiece, our new home for the performing arts, we give thanks for the countless patrons, alumni, grandparents and all who support our young artists down the path of excellence. They perform for you, they bring their greatest for you - thank you for being that stimulus for success. If there is one word that defines our Mater Dei community, it is Family; and as the Kooky Cast sings, "It's family first, and family last, and family by and by," we are reminded of this great love and support. We all bring special gifts to the table, creating the beautiful fabric which envelops us all, and this is the great power of the arts. Full disclosure, we guarantee this night to be a hauntingly grand time - enjoy!

Mangia Mangia Restaurant Reviews: Don’t miss this one-of-a-kind, authentic Italian restaurant, owned and operated by two brothers from Sicily. Giuseppe and Pietro Cefalu have been making waves in Huntington Beach for years now. While the setting and the site are casual, the food is classic Italian and the service warm and friendly.

The Cefalus proudly serve only the freshest seafood (selected daily), an array of pastas with mouthwatering sauces, as well as signature eggplant dishes and a famous calamari fritti. This bustling favorite with locals is sure to please. Reservations are recommended for parties of four or more.

After culinary school in Italy, the Cefalu brothers worked in the restaurant industry for years, Pietro as Head Chef of some of the finest restaurants in Italy. In the early 1980's the brothers brought their authentic Italian cuisine to America, Giuseppe working on the West Coast, until finally opening Mangia Mangia in 1987. You could easily drown yourself in Marinara at Mangia Mangia, but keep an eye on the beloved restaurant's daily specials and you'll find all manner of Sicilian favorites. Look for the bucatini with roasted cauliflower, pine nuts and raisins that hews as closely to North Africa as it does to the Italian coast. Or opt for the swordfish with grilled eggplant that's dressed with bright, acidic citrus. When you walk in, the smell of garlic makes your mouth water. One of the two Sicilian brothers greets you at the door. The place is a typical mom and pop restaurant, nothing too flashy other than the flat screen playing tour videos of Italy.

THE ONLY INGREDIENT THAT’S HARD TO PRONOUNCE AT CHIPOTLE IS “CHIPOTLE.”

Cheddar cheese Cheese cultures

Chipotle was born of the radical belief that there is a connection between how food is raised and prepared, and how it tastes. These principles result in real flavors that tantalize the tongue, salsas that singe the taste buds, and real ingredients that are responsibly sourced.

But real isn’t just a way of sourcing, cooking, and eating. Real is a way of acting in the world. And when so much of the world feels artificial, it’s nice to get back to real.

Lemon juice

That’s why Chipotle has always been committed to preparing real food made with real ingredients. You know, the kind you can recognize and pronounce. In fact, we’ve listed every single one of them right here. We wish everyone would do the same.
