LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR We have braved the polar vortex and Spring has sprung here at Mater Dei High School! Our winter season was full of accolades for each and every program within the performing arts, confirming the great force of the arts on this campus and beyond. Spring is a time of love and rebirth, and what better way to express these than in song and dance. In the spirit of love, the performing arts programs have devoted their time and talents to serve those in our community near and far. Our Dance Program will travel to Mexico this weekend to serve underprivileged youth during Gala de Danza, teaching dance and extending the Mater Dei virtues of compassion and service; the Music Academy Program was recently awarded on a national scale for its contributions to music education with Bands of America; the Theatre program travelled to local Santa Ana elementary schools to share the magic of reading presenting staged adaptations of beloved Dr. Seuss stories; the Song Program provided pajamas, gifts, and love to Orange County Youth battling homelessness, broken homes, and illness; and the Choir Program continuously provides their gift of song to those in assisted living and hospitals as well as supporting various organizations through its philanthropic event, Coffeehouse coming up on May 11. We are blessed indeed and so proud of the efforts our artists are making to create a kinder, more loving world each and every day. And so, welcome to all you’s Guys and Dolls tonight to rambling New York City, where the streets are loud, and the craps games are hushed. We hope this capricious romp leaves you laughing and dancing in your seat, but most importantly, leaving this space happier and more hopeful than when you entered. Now sit back - we are about to rock this boat!!

LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

Welcome to this year’s Senior Musical Guys and Dolls! What you will see tonight is the culmination of months of preparation on behalf of over 100 seniors from the Class of 2019 as well as an expansive student and faculty led production team. Each year, I am blown away with the hidden talent and pure determination of the senior class, and this year is no exception. Whether it be on the field, in the classroom or on a stage, these incredible student artists you will see tonight have left an indelible mark on the fabric of Mater Dei High School. They will be attending Ivy League schools, playing Division I sports, writing the next best-selling novel, developing cures for cancer, and most importantly, carrying the values of love, compassion and joy into the world. Our world needs to hear these love-filled voices and our world needs the imagination and ingenuity that comes from these solution-focused young men and women.

But, of course, an event like this does not come together with performers alone. Many thanks to our new Director of Theatre, Mrs. Lissa Slay, for efficiently coordinating our crew, led by student Stage Manager, Casey Fort. Along with Annemarie Verkuylen, Ava Walters, and Paige Solano, Casey has managed one of the most difficult creative processes out there - taking a group of second-semester seniors, 80% of whom have not performed on stage since they were tree #4 in their 3rd grade Christmas pageant, and putting on a full book musical! In that same vein, we are blessed to welcome two new choreographers to the Senior Musical family, Ms. Kristina Marquez, our new Director of Dance, and Ms. Essence Florie Jasperse. It is such a joy to see the smiles on the seniors’ faces while they jump, spin and slide across the stage. And I would be remiss to neglect acknowledging our incomparable Music Director, Mr. Kent Helwig, celebrating lucky Senior Musical #13! The influence he has had on the students on this campus is immeasurable - here is to 13 more! One of the most difficult jobs during this process is keeping me put together and that simply would not happen without my incredible assistant, Mrs. Marisa Winch, whose dedication to this school and the students is inspiring.

supporting our kids, especially Leslie Van Dalsem, Jennifer Lefebvre, Teri Schulist and Yvonne Verkuylen - thank you for your care and dedication to the performers and the programs on this campus. And what an incredible campus we have, from the constant support of the faculty and staff to make accomodations for the performers tonight, to the administrative board who unceasingly supports our artistic endeavors, and who are currently mounting a massive campaign to bring the arts home to Mater Dei with the construction of a state-of-the-art performing arts center - the Monarch Masterpiece. Thank you all! And last, but certainly not least, unending thanks to the strongest ladies in my life, my daughters Emmerly, Nola and Aveline, and my truly amazing wife, Debbie - they are as much a part of this campus as I and give full credence to the power of unconditional love. Once again, thank YOU for being with us today and throughout the entire year. Your patronage is deeply appreciated and our performers are blessed to have such a wonderful audience to showcase their fine work. You truly fuel our creativity and passion. God bless and enjoy the show!!

And now some special thanks for the support of those not directly associated with the production who, without their support, nothing on the stage tonight would have been possible. To all of the fantastic parents involved with chaperoning, feeding, and

Mangia Mangia Restaurant Reviews: Don’t miss this one-of-a-kind, authentic Italian restaurant, owned and operated by two brothers from Sicily. Giuseppe and Pietro Cefalu have been making waves in Huntington Beach for years now. While the setting and the site are casual, the food is classic Italian and the service warm and friendly.

The Cefalus proudly serve only the freshest seafood (selected daily), an array of pastas with mouthwatering sauces, as well as signature eggplant dishes and a famous calamari fritti. This bustling favorite with locals is sure to please. Reservations are recommended for parties of four or more.

After culinary school in Italy, the Cefalu brothers worked in the restaurant industry for years, Pietro as Head Chef of some of the finest restaurants in Italy. In the early 1980's the brothers brought their authentic Italian cuisine to America, Giuseppe working on the West Coast, until finally opening Mangia Mangia in 1987. You could easily drown yourself in Marinara at Mangia Mangia, but keep an eye on the beloved restaurant's daily specials and you'll find all manner of Sicilian favorites. Look for the bucatini with roasted cauliflower, pine nuts and raisins that hews as closely to North Africa as it does to the Italian coast. Or opt for the swordfish with grilled eggplant that's dressed with bright, acidic citrus. When you walk in, the smell of garlic makes your mouth water. One of the two Sicilian brothers greets you at the door. The place is a typical mom and pop restaurant, nothing too flashy other than the flat screen playing tour videos of Italy.

Through the generous arrangement of Mater Dei Dance parent and Artistic Director/Founder Christina Lyon, Mater Dei students will work directly with underprivileged youth in the Los Cabos community, teaching various dance techniques to the students at Danza Que da Esperanza, a local dance studio. They will also have the opportunity to learn from worldclass professional dancers, collaborate with students from the Glorya Kaufman School of Dance at USC, and showcase their own talents during the opening sequence of the Gala, held at the beautiful Viceroy Hotel Los Cabos. Our students will be exposed to rich collaborative affairs which transcend languages, movement styles, and cross-cultural backgrounds.
