MATER DEI HIGH SCHOOL PRESENTS

Madrigal Feast DIRECTOR’S WELCOME

Good Evening and welcome to Mater Dei High School Choral and Vocal Music Department’s 30th Annual Madrigal Feast! Thank you for joining us for this beautiful celebration of the Christmas season and our Savior’s birth. This night would not be possible without the help of so very many volunteers led by our fantastic Madrigal Feast Chairs, Wayne and Julie Fort, and Assistant Chairs Pat and Nicole Chamberlain. Tonight, we are especially grateful to the Fort family, as this is their final feast, for the service they have rendered for so many years. A huge thank you also to Lisa DeLong and Lauren Chavez for the many hours spent with our students helping them to look so fantastic tonight! And a special thank you to our student directors, James Mitchell, Annemarie Verkuylen, and Casey Fort. Your invaluable leadership made a major contribution to get us all ready for today. Thank you for your humble dedication and constant service. We hope you enjoy this year’s Madrigal Feast and Royal Concert. Thank you all for supporting Mater Dei’s Choral and Vocal Music Program and our students. I wish you all a very happy holiday season filled with joy and happiness!

Merry Christmas and God Bless You All! Jodi Reed

PERFORMING ARTS

2019 2020

LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

It is my sincere pleasure to welcome you to what promises to be a year full of beauty, a year full of dialogue, a year full of joy. Through dance and song, the visual and aural, and playing in every sense of the word, it is our hope that you may quiet the cares of a noisy world behind and find peace in our halls. It is our mission here in the arts to empower ambassadors of change through artistic expression, engaging our community to experience, reflect and react. Just as a kaleidoscope, we pray our events shift the lens of your perception, adding new opportunities to wonder and dream. And as we dream of the imminent construction of the Monarch Masterpiece, our new home for the performing arts, we give thanks for the countless patrons, alumni, grandparents and all who support our young artists down the path of excellence. They perform for you, they bring their greatest for you - thank you for being that stimulus for success. And so a hearty Huzzah! to you and your loved ones here with us tonight or here with us in spirit. As you survey the feast prepared for you tonight, we pray that you are filled with joy and promise: Promise for abundant blessings - Promise for peace in our world - Promise for our future. For, it

is in the voices and the hearts of the young singers and ringers tonight that these promises are fulfilled. May their sounds ring true for you the entirety of this season and through the coming year. Merry Christmas one and all and may God's blessings continue to enrich your lives.

Mangia Mangia Restaurant Reviews: Don’t miss this one-of-a-kind, authentic Italian restaurant, owned and operated by two brothers from Sicily. Giuseppe and Pietro Cefalu have been making waves in Huntington Beach for years now. While the setting and the site are casual, the food is classic Italian and the service warm and friendly.

The Cefalus proudly serve only the freshest seafood (selected daily), an array of pastas with mouthwatering sauces, as well as signature eggplant dishes and a famous calamari fritti. This bustling favorite with locals is sure to please. Reservations are recommended for parties of four or more.

After culinary school in Italy, the Cefalu brothers worked in the restaurant industry for years, Pietro as Head Chef of some of the finest restaurants in Italy. In the early 1980's the brothers brought their authentic Italian cuisine to America, Giuseppe working on the West Coast, until finally opening Mangia Mangia in 1987. You could easily drown yourself in Marinara at Mangia Mangia, but keep an eye on the beloved restaurant's daily specials and you'll find all manner of Sicilian favorites. Look for the bucatini with roasted cauliflower, pine nuts and raisins that hews as closely to North Africa as it does to the Italian coast. Or opt for the swordfish with grilled eggplant that's dressed with bright, acidic citrus. When you walk in, the smell of garlic makes your mouth water. One of the two Sicilian brothers greets you at the door. The place is a typical mom and pop restaurant, nothing too flashy other than the flat screen playing tour videos of Italy.

DANCE STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

What have you learned being a part of this team? I learned to love dance and have fun with it. Coming from a past in dance where I felt judged and unaccepted, I’ve really been able to open up my perspective and see positivity. It’s uplifting to have a coach that loves you and wants the best for you, pushing you in a motivating way that doesn’t deteriorate your character. – Lauren McGrath, senior I have learned the importance of being a good teammate. Being a teammate on the dance team, you have to be focused, determined, hardworking, reliable, and you have to put full commitment into your team and your responsibilities as a dancer and team member. You have to be accountable for your growth, responsibilities, and mistakes. All your actions, attitude, and effort effect the team. – Kyla Martinez, senior

What has been your most memorable on-stage moment? My most memorable on-stage moment was last year at Soul Stories. The whole dance program came on stage for a final performance and there were confetti canons that surprised us all. It was a great way to end the dance season! – Payton Curley, senior My most memorable onstage moment has been dancing in Cabo at the Gala de Danza. I loved dancing in an environment where everyone had the same passion and love for dance and I will never forget the contagious energy every dancer had on stage that made each second of our performance flourish more and more. My second most memorable onstage moment has been student choreography. I got to choreograph my own dance and create my own story. When I was onstage I felt something I had never felt before. I was dancing and I was free. I felt all the emotions and became the character. I felt like a new person. – Kyla Martinez, senior

What has been your favorite bonding experience with your teammates so far? So far, my favorite bonding experience with my teammates would have to be football games. No matter if we’re performing or not, the other members of the team always show up to support one another. The parents always know how to make the tailgates so special and they always put in so much effort to make it look amazing! – Faith McGrath, senior My favorite bonding experience with my teammates so far has been the Disney day. I loved getting to hang out with my teammates in an outside setting. – Elle Fletcher, sophomore

How do you plan on continuing with dance in the future? I plan on going into the Sports Medicine/Dance Science field. I don’t necessarily want to dance professionally with a company, but I would love to stay involved in the dance world. I have always been interested in the anatomy aspect of dance, and I am hoping to pursue a career in that field. – Sophie Bartlett, sophomore In the future, I want to run my own dance studio so that I can share my love and passion for this art form to future generations. – Kelley Rood, sophomore I hope to continue my journey in dance through inspiration. I want other to know that it doesn’t matter what you look like or what anyone else says as long as it makes you happy and your heart is content. – Faith McGrath, senior

What are you looking forward to most this season? Every single competition, bonding event, etc., as I have a deep love for the boys, and the entire program as a whole. This program has brought me places I never dreamed of, and I wish to honor that with dedication, passion, etc. – Jonathan Phu, sophomore I am looking forward to all the great opportunities we have offered to us, like the trips, classes with guest teachers, and more. I hope to improve and learn a lot and that’s what I’m excited about– to come in next year even stronger. – Leah Von Rotz, freshman

STRING ENSEMBLE PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT

The Mater Dei String Ensemble Orchestra is one of our younger groups in the Instrumental Music program, yet continues to grow and develop every year. Under the direction of Mr Fernando Martinez, Director of Instrumental Music, and our String Instructor, Ms. Jinah Chung, these students learn the fundamentals of individual and group performance- all while having fun. The String Ensemble participates in many concerts and performances throughout the year. The first half of our school year finds them in costumes as they perform Halloween pieces at the Instrumental Music concert Haunted Eve in October and in festive holiday dress for Christmas at the Corner in December. In the spring, our String Ensemble performs on stage at Chapman University’s Memorial Hall for La Primavera. They continue their musical growth as they prepare solo performances for the end of the semester and wrap up the school year playing at Mater Dei’s graduation ceremony. I enjoy our classes most of all because we

I like playing in the MD Strings Ensemble

have lots of fun while learning and working on

Orchestra because it has a great teacher,

THE ONLY INGREDIENT THAT’S HARD TO PRONOUNCE AT CHIPOTLE IS “CHIPOTLE.”

Cheddar cheese Cheese cultures

Distilled vinegar

Chipotle was born of the radical belief that there is a connection between how food is raised and prepared, and how it tastes. These principles result in real flavors that tantalize the tongue, salsas that singe the taste buds, and real ingredients that are responsibly sourced.

Thank you for building these beautiful traditions that are such a privilege to be a part of. The Performing Arts at Mater Dei would not be what they are without your leadership.

To My Beautiful Family: To my favorite person, my everything - my sweet Jeff. There is not a more supportive, kind, loving man and I am so grateful we have been by each other’s

side for 26 years. There are not words to convey how much you and our family mean to me. You give me strength and courage. To my wonderful kids, both grown, and those at home - how I love sharing this musical life with you! Jacob - these past four years have been so special. I’m so grateful to have spent each day with you doing this crazy thing we do! I am so sad it is ending, but so excited to watch you fly! Brock and Belle - I can’t wait ‘til you are here!
