Letter from the Director Welcome to another Winter season of artistry here at Mater Dei High School! We have experienced an incredible Fall season full of accolades for each and every program within the performing arts, confirming the great force of the arts on this campus and beyond. Love is in the air as we head into Spring, and what a perfect way to usher in the season, joining together for the Theatre Program’s production of Shakespeare’s Love’s Labour’s Lost. In the spirit of love, the performing arts programs have devoted their time and talents to serve those in our community near and far. The Music Academy Program was recently awarded on a national scale for its contributions to music education; the Theatre program and its Chuckles 4 Charity events has raised hundreds of dollars to support theatre education programs for the underserved; the Dance Program will travel to Mexico to serve underprivileged youth, teaching dance and extending the Mater Dei virtues of compassion and service; the Song Program provided pajamas, gifts, and love to Orange County Youth battling homelessness, broken homes, and illness; and finally, the Choir Program continuously provides their gift of song to those in assisted living and hospitals as well as supporting various organizations through its philanthropic event, Coffeehouse, which has benefited groups such as the Ronald McDonald House and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in the past. We are blessed indeed and so proud of the efforts our artists are making to create a kinder, more loving world each and every day. And so, whether you are here with the one you love, or are still seeking the muse to your sonnets, we wish you nothing but love and merriment all your days. Take a moment to relish God’s wonderful love letter to us in the form of creation here in our beautiful Grotto and enjoy the show!!

Director’s Notes

I remember sitting in my seat at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego, over twenty years ago, awestruck and amazed, as I experienced watching Love’s Labour’s Lost for the first time. I fell in love with the lively characters, delighted in the ridiculous plotline, and still remember the production values as if I’d just seen it. In our production, we feature an all-female ensemble, in what’s meant to be a saucy nod to the lords’ banishment of all women from the kingdom. Even Shakespeare had to accommodate some ladies in Navarre-- the presence of Jaquenetta and the unseen dey-woman suggest that women are, quite simply, indispensable. There’s a vibrancy and vivacity to this play that is charming, and having the opportunity to share this play with such a special company, who shares their vibrancy and vivacity with me at every rehearsal, is such an honor – and a blessing. We have grown as a true ensemble, exploring characters, making discoveries, and laughing together. I welcome you to the final show of our Theatre season, and thank you for sharing your time with us. Honor, glory, love!

- Mrs. Lissa Slay

SYNOPSIS

August 1914. Ferdinand, the King of Navarre, has a vision of transforming his court into “a little academe.” With his three closest friends, Lords Berowne, Longaville, and Dumaine, by his side, they sign a proclamation to swear off all distractions – including women – for a three-year period, instead devoting themselves to study. Unfortunately, the King has forgotten that he had agreed to meet with the Princess of France and her court prior to issuing his proclamation and now must deal with the consequences of having ladies enter a court where they have so recently been barred. The men find themselves very much smitten and attempt to write love letters and poems to the ladies behind one another’s backs – which fails, to hilarity all around. Hoping to distract the ladies from the fact that the men had broken their vows, the King and his Lords send expensive gifts, disguise themselves, and finally host a play – “The Nine Worthies” – hoping to win the ladies’ affections. When the entertainment reaches its height, the Princess receives important news – and the future for all hangs in the balance. 11

Aside from Theatre Arts, Daniella is also in the Choral and Mock Trial Programs at Mater Dei. This play has been an amazing challenge, and she cannot wait for the audience to see the characters in this play brought to life. The rehearsal process has been such a new and joyful experience. Kalusha has really appreciated being able to work with all of her wonderful classmates and grow closer to them. She is very excited to be performing for everyone and is thankful to God for allowing her to have such a wonderful experience.

Isabelle Buchanan (Ensemble)

Isabelle is a sophomore, and this is her fourth play at Mater Dei and tenth show in all her years of performing. When she isn’t sitting in the audience or acting on stage, she enjoys laughing for hours on end and making unforgettable memories with her friends and family. She is very excited for her second Shakespeare in the Grotto performance and hopes everyone enjoys Love’s Labour’s Lost as much as she does. It has been such an honor for her to work with this incredibly talented cast and crew, and she especially wants to thank the outstanding audience for making it all worthwhile.

STUDENT COMPOSERS PERFORMANCE

SPOTLIGHT

Danika McKee, left; Kalusha Brutlag, right

Mater Dei High School’s performance of Love’s Labour’s Lost features original musical & vocal pieces composed by two members of the cast. Ensemble player Danika McKee, and the Princess of France, played by Kalusha Brutlag, collaborated to bring us beautifully created lyrics and music specifically scripted for the show. Director Mrs. Lissa Slay sat down with Ms. McKee & Ms. Brutlag to find out more about their journey. Here’s what they had to say.

Mrs. Slay: What was the process like for composing the music for our Shakespeare in the Grotto play, Love’s Labour’s Lost?

Kalusha: We started with ideas for what we would want it to sound like vocally, then Danika would start playing on the piano and we figured it out from there.

Danika: Some of the text worked as lyrics so we used those and added music that felt right. For the last song in the play, we didn’t have lyrics to work with so we took text from Beethoven’s “Immortal Beloved.”

Kalusha: I had watched a movie once that had the words, “Ever thine, ever mine, ever ours” so when we were trying

to find a poem that had a memorable line and felt like it fit within the theme of the show, even though this isn’t a poem, these words felt like the right choice.

Danika: Kalusha sort of had a melody, so I started improvising on the piano – it’s all about trying different things and you don’t really know what you’re going to get.

Kalusha: We just kept doing it and kept working at it.

Danika: We didn’t really have an idea for how it would all come together, but after playing around with Kalusha’s

melody and playing around on the piano, we started finding where the music worked. It’s been really cool working with different genres – Russian, musical theatre, sad heartfelt love ballads.

Kalusha: It was great using these different genres to highlight different ideas and parts of the story.

Danika: The plot has a lot of ups and downs and we feel like these different musical styles complemented the story.

Mrs. Slay: Anything you would like to share with our audience?

Kalusha: Don’t get too lost in the music – remember that it’s there to do something for the scene. Danika: It’s not there to overpower; it’s there to connect their story to yours.

Mangia Mangia Restaurant Reviews: Don’t miss this one-of-a-kind, authentic Italian restaurant, owned and operated by two brothers from Sicily. Giuseppe and Pietro Cefalu have been making waves in Huntington Beach for years now. While the setting and the site are casual, the food is classic Italian and the service warm and friendly.

The Cefalus proudly serve only the freshest seafood (selected daily), an array of pastas with mouthwatering sauces, as well as signature eggplant dishes and a famous calamari fritti. This bustling favorite with locals is sure to please. Reservations are recommended for parties of four or more.

After culinary school in Italy, the Cefalu brothers worked in the restaurant industry for years, Pietro as Head Chef of some of the finest restaurants in Italy. In the early 1980's the brothers brought their authentic Italian cuisine to America, Giuseppe working on the West Coast, until finally opening Mangia Mangia in 1987. You could easily drown yourself in Marinara at Mangia Mangia, but keep an eye on the beloved restaurant's daily specials and you'll find all manner of Sicilian favorites. Look for the bucatini with roasted cauliflower, pine nuts and raisins that hews as closely to North Africa as it does to the Italian coast. Or opt for the swordfish with grilled eggplant that's dressed with bright, acidic citrus. When you walk in, the smell of garlic makes your mouth water. One of the two Sicilian brothers greets you at the door. The place is a typical mom and pop restaurant, nothing too flashy other than the flat screen playing tour videos of Italy.

HANDBELLS ENSEMBLE PROGRAM

SPOTLIGHT

Whatever the level of musicianship, the Mater Dei Handbells Ensemble has a place for the student wanting to enrich their artistry. Students in the program improve their rhythm skills and learn to work as a team to create a piece of music seamingly made by one instrument. The ensemble provides a challenge for those who want to explore different avenues of choral and instrumental music. When asked why she joined, Handbell President Emily Upham (junior) said it was because “I love music but can’t sing for the life of me.” Sebastian Saintignon (junior), Handbell Manager, states “I joined handbells after I saw them during the Spring Concert. I loved the sound and motion of it. Now, I enjoy the challenge and the feeling of making a working piece of music.” This sentiment rings true for many students. The Handbells Ensemble is part of our Choral Music program, Directed by Mr. Justin Miller. Ms. Amanda Bistolfo, Handbells Instructor and Associate Choral Director, calls them the hardestworking and bravest ensemble. “These students have to set up and take down their equipment every day, not to mention polish and keep the bells clean. There is nowhere for them to hide; every ringer is responsible for their own bells and they see each piece of music as a personal challenge, refusing to let it defeat them. They are incredibly determined.” Even though each student is responsible for his or her own part, they encourage each other to do their best and trust those around them. The Handbells Ensemble performs at school events, the Choral Program’s Madrigal Feast, competitions and festivals throughout the year. They just recently returned from the Twelfth Night Handbell Festival in Boulder, NV. They played for about 9 hours over the space of a 24 hour period, sight-reading and performing with about 10 other Handbell groups from all over the country.
