About Cameroon

Cameroon is located in the heart of Central Africa, between Chad in the North and Atlantic coast in the South. It is a total of 292,044 miles from the Atlantic Ocean to Lake Chad. With Nigeria to the West it borders the Equatorial Guinea, Gabon and the Congo to the South and Central Africa Republic and Chad to the East. Cameroon has coastal plains, low plateaus and volcanoes in the South. The Adamou plateau has an altitude of 800 to 1,500m in the center and semi-desert savannah and mountains that look like the surface moon in the North. These sights reflect all the geographical diversity of the African continent. However, Mount Cameroon which is an active volcano in the South West is the highest point in the country towers 4,070 miles over the ocean. The two main areas are Kribi, known for its fine sandy beach and Limbe, with the astonishing mouth of the Lobe River which pours over a waterfall in the Atlantic Ocean. With the population of approximately 14 million, Fernando PO’O was the first European to reach Cameroon in 1472. Up until the 18th century English traders and missionaries travelled through the country. From 1884 until the end of the World War I, Cameroon was a German protectorate. It remained a French Colony from 1919 until it became independent in 1960. The Language is French and English. 70% of the population speaks French and the other 30% speak English. Oil, mining, aluminum production, agriculture and tourism are Cameroon’s main resources. In Addition, Cameroon has seven national parks that is home to some of the most varied habitat in Africa including lions, elephants, giraffes, hippopotami and more. The cultural diversity is owned to the large number of different ethnic groups, each one having its own lifestyle, traditions, folklore and crafts.
