PLANTING
FOR THE FUTURE ADRIENNE L. NAKASHIMA CEO “To plant the seeds for our future, we will cultivate and fertilize fresh ideas for the success of our public gardens, together.” – APGA Conference 2016 This past June, I had a chance to meet with colleagues from the American Public Gardens Association (APGA). Every year, the group hosts a conference where thousands of garden professionals gather to discover trends in the public garden world, attend sessions related to fundraising, collections, programs and sustainability and visit other gardens. This year, Miami hosted the conference with the theme “Changing Perspectives – Planting for the Future.” What an interesting time we are finding ourselves in. Discussions took place on issues surrounding plant conservation, biodiversity and the impact of climate change. Sessions rrevolved around the themes of gaining new audiences, ongoing fundraising challenges and the development of a millennial work force. No matter the size or shape, it was clear that we at South Coast Botanic Garden are not alone in trying to prepare for what the future holds. We collectively agreed that in order to impact the success of gardens locally and around the world, it is important to ‘plant the seeds’ and continue to cultivate and fertilize fresh ideas. At South Coast Botanic Garden, we have a long history of planting seeds. From the very inception, going from landfill to botanic garden was at its time, an innovative idea. Over the years, the Garden progressed - evolving plant collections, implementing programs and hosting special events. This past fiscal year, we look back and recognize a time period wrought with our attempts to continue planting those seeds. We hosted Nature Connects, an award-winning, record-breaking exhibition created with over 2 million LEGO pieces. The exhibit featured 15 sculptures built with LEGO bricks by New York Artist, Sean Kenney. We also tried out some new special events designed to attract audiences who may have never thought of coming to the Garden. These events included our Movie Night Under the Stars, Valentine’s Day Stroll, and the Garden’s first ever “Silent Disco.” And in response to a need we were hearing from teachers and families, we debuted a free, self-directed program aimed at (r (re)connecting students with nature through experiential learning in the sensory-rich environment of the Garden. Still in its beginning stages, the Passport Program was piloted by over 600 K to 2nd-grade students this summer, all from Title 1 schools. When completed, the Passport Program, will be free to schools and Garden visitors with K- 5th-grade students. We thank the many visitors, members, volunteers, and donors for supporting our efforts this past year. Whether you attended a class, sat on the meadow to watch a movie, bought a t-shirt at our Gift Shop, ate at a food truck during a special event, had your wedding here or helped pull weeds, your contributions help strengthen the community that is our Garden. We are sincerely appreciative of the commitment you all have made to ensure the South Coast Botanic Garden’s success for years to come.
