MEMORIAL DRIVE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH

CELEBRATING: ALPHA AND HOME GROUPS Our first Home Groups & Alpha-sponsored Block Party was a great success except for one thing: We were so busy enjoying y’all’s company, passing out popsicles and information about these new ministries, and chatting up our new food truck friends that we forgot to lead everyone in an intentional time of prayer. Alpha is a great Learning opportunity that is especially geared toward people who are new to faith or uncertain about church. By gathering each week for a shared meal and meaningful conversation about the big questions, lives are changed and people are brought to Jesus. Home Groups are all about Living as disciples of Jesus. From the early days of the church, Christ-followers knew they needed to get together frequently, break bread, pray and find companionship on the journey of faith. Through Home Groups, we become more like Jesus. We are excited about these new ministries for new people. If you haven’t yet found “your people” here at MDUMC, we hope you’ll consider signing up for Alpha or Home Groups Starting Point. Even if you have found the people that make MDUMC feel like home, please join us in praying for Alpha and Home Groups throughout the month of September. Monday: Pray for people who didn’t make it to worship yesterday — that they might eventually feel so connected to MDUMC that they can’t imagine missing a Sunday. Tuesday: Pray for Home Group hosts—both current and those people who may feel the nudge to host a group in their homes. Wednesday: This is they day that Alpha meets! Pray that those participating would be refreshed and renewed in their faith to share it with others. Thursday: The very first MDUMC Home Group started by meeting on Thursdays. Pray for all of the new groups starting this fall. Friday: Lift up the new Alpha participants in prayer — that their learning might have a real, tangible impact on their daily lives. Saturday: Often a day of rest and re-creation, on Saturdays we invite you to pray for renewal in our church and in our community. Sunday: Pray for those who are curious about Home Groups — that they would attend Starting Point over lunch for the next 4 Sundays. Thanks for joining us in this ministry!

THEMESSENGER
MEMORIAL DRIVE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH SEPTEMBER 2019
CELEBRATING: YOUNG ADULTS & YOUNG FAMILIES
Greetings! My name is Carrie Neal, and I am the new Director of Young Adults and Young Families for MDUMC. After fifteen years of working in the Youth Department at MDUMC, I decided earlier this year that it was time for change. I am so excited to take on this new role at our church! I grew up in this area (went to Rummel Creek, MMS and Stratford), and I attended MDUMC throughout high school and college. After I graduated, I moved back to West Houston and have been living here ever since. In 2013, I married my husband Brett, and in April 2018 we had our precious daughter, Molly. Memorial Drive has been a huge part of our lives and of my faith journey, and I look forward to helping others find community here. As we move into the fall, I will be working on figuring out the best ways to minister to the Young Adults and Young Families in our area. We are going to be doing a lot of brainstorming and would love to hear any ideas that you have on where to take this ministry. If you have any feedback, there is a form you can fill out at mdumc.org/youngadults, or you can contact me with any thoughts. I look forward to growing into this new position and am so excited about the future for Young Adults and Young Families at MDUMC! With Joy,
CARRIE NEAL

CELEBRATING: CROSSWALK HOUSTON With your support, CrossWalk Houston continues to open doors of opportunities to people in our community as well as reach beyond our walls and into our neighborhood. Take a look at how you embodied learning, living, giving, and serving this summer with CrossWalk Houston. Students learned through summer ESL, and over twenty students participated in Reading Practice Group twice a week. Eighteen students were tutored weekly by ten volunteers in Basic Adult Education, and our CWH director, Sedonia Finstad, absorbed new practices at the Literacy Texas Conference. Our second Community Table brought students, volunteers, steering council members, and families together to live in community and share a meal and stories. CrossWalk Houston gave all the camp supplies needed to send a middle schooler to Camp Ozark with Family Point Resources, as well as school supplies for him and his sisters. His smile in the photo above is a big “thank you to MDUMC. CrossWalk Houston served three meals for Thornwood Elementary teachers during their staff development week. Without the support of a PTA, Thornwood relies on our generosity. Summer well done. Thanks for your continued support of CrossWalk Houston.

MISSIONS AND OUTREACH

BACKPACK BLESSINGS: NEW PROGRAM, SAME FOCUS EVERY OTHER FRIDAY BEGINNING SEPTEMBER 6
Food insecurity in our neighborhoods and around Houston is a major hindrance to many students’ success in school. For many years we have provided food bags because of your generous donations and the amazing work of volunteers. This school year, we will be partnering with the Houston Food Bank’s Backpack Buddy program to provide volunteers and distribute meal bags. This food helps students and families at Thornwood Elementary receive needed nutrition on weekends. We need your help for 1 hour every other Friday starting September 6th to unpack and distribute bags to classrooms for students to take home for the weekend. You can register to help by visiting mdumc.org/missions or by contacting KandiceKirby@mdumc.org.
BACK TO SCHOOL MISSIONS – THANK YOU!
Thank you to every one of you who generously gave to any of our Back to School Missions ministries. Because of your giving, we were able to partner with Memorial Assistance Ministries to provide a full uniform set including a shirt, pants, underwear, socks, and shoes to 140 students at Thornwood Elementary (totaling over $6,800). Your assistance in this ministry has made a difference in the lives of each of these children. Your generosity has also provided food pantry items and school supplies to our college students at Texas Southern University through our partnership with the Wesley Foundation. We could not do this work without your giving and service to all of our partner schools. Thank you!
THE RESTORATION TEAM: FAR FROM FINISHED SEPTEMBER 28 & OCTOBER 19 | 9 - 3 PM
Volunteers are needed to help our rebuild work teams restore homes flooded by Harvey. No experience is required, and training is provided on site. Typical work will include installing sheetrock, insulation, or painting. There are roughly 80,000 homes still awaiting assistance, leading FEMA to anticipate a ten-year rebuild. As more and more organizations run out of funding and close their doors, The Restoration Team remains committed to Houston and its families in need. We will continue to engage the local church, expand partnerships, develop sustainable and resilient building practices, and serve as the hand and feet of Jesus Christ. Contact KandiceKirby@mdumc.org if you are ready to serve!
