Overview of Ministry:
Evangelism Ministry at MDUMC seeks to invite new people into relationship with Christ and equips and encourages members to share their faith openly with friends and neighbors. One of the major growth engines of evangelism at MDUMC is Alpha; and, with Alpha at the center of Evangelism ministry we invite non-Christians to conversations about faith and meaning while catalyzing those conversations for those who are already Christian. Evangelism ministry answers the general call of all followers of Jesus to make disciples -- by extending that initial invitation to discipleship and by continually answering that invitation for ourselves.
Events/Ministry Opportunities/Devliverables:
Alpha | Winter, Spring, and Fall | ~25-40 Per Season Alpha is a series of sessions exploring the Christian faith and is designed to create conversation about life’s deepest questions. Our ultimate goal for social justice ministry at MDUMC is that the concern for dismantling systematic injustice will infuse the culture of our congregation, even as programs and leaders come and go. We recognize that this transformative work takes time. In the near future, we hope to focus on our energy on the intersectionality of multiple forms of injustice, to shift from an attitude of benevolence or paternalism in missions to an attitude of mutuality and empowerment, and to center our efforts in the three clergy-identified pillars of education, saturation, and programmatic work.
Events/Ministry Opportunities/Devliverables:
God is Love | Ongoing | 50 Victor and guests engage laity in a series of conversations exploring our role as Christians in today’s national dialogue around race and racism. Clergy have discussed ways to potentially expand these conversations into other venues and formats, such as a podcast. Texas-Mexico Border Trips | Seasonal | 2,000 Led by Kandice and in partnership with other Houston churches and the TAC, laity travel to the border to engage the ongoing work of empowerment, education, and policy change through area organizations such as Team Brownsville, Good Neighbor Settlement House, and JFON (Justice For Our Neighbors). FAM Partnership | Goal to Launch: January 2022 | TBD As of this year, MDUMC has signed on as a named partner of FAM Houston. In the initial stage, Ginny and Kandice will work with a focus group of laity around the concept of neighboring and benevolence vs. mutuality. Later this year, we will broaden this discussion to churchwide studies, workshops, and events, in preparation for direct engagement with FAM via the new Pamoja Project. Clergy Staff Quarterly Goals | Quarterly | 4,000 Clergy are asked to create quarterly goals for themselves in leading social justice forward through education, saturation, and programming.
