Academic achievements Ensuring quality worldwide We are the first British university to achieve the highest rating possible for our collaborative provision around the world. The audit, conducted by the Quality Assurance Agency, ensures we deliver the same high quality education at partner institutions around the world, as we do in the UK. Quality Assurance Agency The Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) visited Middlesex in 2009. Its resulting report said auditors had confidence in the University’s current and likely future management of its academic standards and of the learning opportunities available to students. There was also praise for the ‘meticulous attention’ given to the establishment, development and integration of our overseas campus in Dubai. Research Assessment Exercise Over three quarters – 77 per cent – of all Middlesex’s research submitted for the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise was rated as ‘internationally recognised’, with a substantial proportion rated as ‘internationally excellent’ or better. Queen’s Anniversary Prizes In 1996 we were awarded the first of three Queen’s Anniversary Prizes for Higher and Further Education, for our innovative provision of Work Based Learning, giving people the opportunity to gain a degree for the knowledge and expertise they acquire through their work. A further Queen’s Anniversary Prize, this
time for Education Technology followed in 1998 and a third in 2000, for the University’s groundbreaking Flood Hazard Research Centre. We are one of very few universities to have been awarded three Queen’s Anniversary Prizes. Skillset Media Academy In 2007 Middlesex was awarded Skillset Media Academy status by the UK Government Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills. This award recognises the excellence and forward-looking nature of our media-related courses and education delivered to students. Expert staff Our academic expertise is vital to ensuring student success. As you would expect, our academic staff are committed to the highest standards in teaching and are ambitious for our students. Staff in Mauritius are part of the expanding Middlesex research network as well as being well qualified in their fields and professions. They are actively contributing to publications and we are proud to have received our first grant from the Mauritian Research Council. Organisational achievements Queen’s Award for Enterprise We are proud to have been given the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in 2003, and again in 2011. What our students say about Middlesex University Mauritius
My journey at Middlesex University has been filled with exceptionally fine educational experiences, dynamic interactions with knowledgeable faculty members, and helpful support from the staff. Having international students from different backgrounds as classmates broadened my vision. The on-campus non-academic activities were fun-filled and truly memorable. Studying here has shaped my personal and professional aspirations, and opened up a world of unexpected opportunities– first at Harel Mallac, then at the National Productivity and Competitiveness Council, and now at JurisTax Ltd. The acquired knowledge and values acted as catalysts in my professional endeavours. I will cherish this bond with my alma mater for having prepared me to face the challenging professional world. Yashna Towokul BSc (Hons) Business Management My time at Middlesex University Mauritius has been extremely rich and rewarding both from an academic and career oriented perspective. I feel proud to be part of the Middlesex family. The friendly yet competitive environment, outstanding teaching techniques, comprehensive learning content, and the staff all made MDX a class of its own. The teaching methods took on a multi-disciplinary approach and it helped me see the bigger picture and to think outside the box. The placements offered also gave me the opportunity to apply the acquired theoretical knowledge to real life work situations. I will always cherish how this precious work experience has helped to shape my career. Anneka Cumlajee BSc (Hons) Business Management Before coming to Mauritius, I never had any major expectations but to focus on my academic goals while enjoying the island. Upon arriving on the campus, the ambience was very welcoming. The lecturers and staff were extremely friendly and helpful. What I appreciate the most about Middlesex University is the good learning facilities and the high standards of teaching. This motivated me to apply for an MSc right after completing my BSc. Alongside my studies, the University gave me a huge opportunity to explore and develop my passion in photography, both on and off campus. Overall, being a student at Middlesex Mauritius Branch campus has been exceptionally good and has given me a clearer sense of direction career-wise. Celebrating Staffs I have been part of the Psychology department since its inception in Sept 2010 and I have watched our BSc Psychology (Hons) with Counselling Skills grow from strength to strength. There is no denying that our Psychology programme is the best in Mauritius. Why? Because we do not use traditional lectures as our only source of knowledge transfer. In parallel, we run workshops, laboratories, seminars, surgeries as well as individual tutorials depending on specific module needs. We teach the typically popular modules such as developmental psychology and social psychology, however our programme also boasts contemporary subjects such as positive psychology and coaching as well as health, sports and exercise psychology. As Psychology lecturers, we have all trained in different parts of the world and our teaching style speaks for itself. If you want Anju Ajodha a ‘thought provoking’ experience, come study Psychology at Lecturer in Psychology and Programme Coordinator Middlesex University Mauritius, Branch Campus.
In my five years at Middlesex University Mauritius Branch Campus I have seen a small campus grow and develop into a worldwide recognized institution. I have been exponentially prouder and prouder to work with numerous students and organizations that have helped it flourish into a beautiful and thriving academic centre. Such recognition can only happen through hard work and dedication. The knowledge and experience that I have gained through my current position in Marketing is very valuable for my career aspiration. Middlesex University Mauritius Branch Campus, is a life-changing experience for both Students and Staff.
I am the Programme Coordinator for the Advertising, Public Relations and Media BA. I was born in South Africa, moved to the UK when I was eight, and spent the best part of eight years studying and teaching at the University of Sussex before moving to Mauritius to take up my current post with Middlesex. In terms of research, I am particularly interested in how advertising and public relations professionals work, and how governments and other non-profit organisations use their expertise to ‘sell’ their ideas and initiatives. My PhD explored the use of advertising and public relations to promote recruitment to British armed forces, and I am in the process of rewriting chapters from it with an eye to publishing them in major international journals. In terms of teaching, I believe that a media degree should give students not only an academic training, but a series of practical and vocational skills as well. Dr Brendan Maartens Our modules are designed in such a way as to emphasise this Lecturer in Advertising, philosophy. Our first years, for example, are not only learning Public Relations and Media about the ways in which the media industries operate; they are also organising an advertising campaign on behalf of a local charity, and have set up their own society, the Media Cluster, to allow them to practice their media production skills!
I took up the position of Associate Director Academic at the Middlesex Mauritius Branch Campus in January 2015 having worked at Middlesex London since 1995. During my time at Middlesex I have held a number of positions, most recently as Director of Learning and Teaching where i was responsible for the strategic direction of learning and teaching.
Shirley Rayapen Marketing Assistant
As the first registered employee at Middlesex University Mauritius Branch Campus, I have seen the campus grow from small community of 13 students in 2010 to a vibrant one with over 800 students in 2015. I am honoured to be the first staff to welcome our new International Students and help them settle on their first day. I feel proud to be part of Middlesex’s dynamic community and cherished the campus lively environment
Dr Nicky Torrance Associate Director Academic
Yashine Joomun Driver
I am committed to developing a first class student experience that is grounded in contemporary pedagogy and disciplinary research and scholarship. I believe the student learning experience should be inclusive, engaging and value the diversity that comes with a multi-cultural student body. I am very excited by the developmental potential offered by my new post in Mauritius and is keen to work with staff, students and colleagues from the education sector in Mauritius on projects that have a positive impact on the student learning experience and academic practice.

The learning process involves a combination of selective inputs, workshop activities, school based work, self-directed enquiries and research, and online learning. The programme consists of 3 x 60 credit modules which are studied progressively over three years part-time to provide the opportunity for in-depth study and development. The MA entails: Year 1 - Developing Effective Teaching and Learning; Year 2 - Developing Effective Leadership and Management in Education; Year 3 – Dissertation. Each module is studied for a year, and if successful, the participant will progress to the next module; with the last being a compulsory Dissertation.
MA Education (Leadership and Management) – PART TIME The MA Education (Leadership and Management) program is for those professionals employed in educational or training organisations, contributing to the educational or training process. This is a flexible, integrated course for educational professionals to focus their enquiry, research and scholarship activity on developing more effective practice and raising achievement in their particular area. You will graduate as a specialist in Education (Leadership and Management). The entry requirements are normally a good first degree and professional employment in Education/Training. However, many students enter this programme with suitable preaccreditation and undertake just two modules; or just the dissertation module, enabling them to graduate sooner with an MA Education (Leadership and management). Credit can be awarded for prior certificate learning, subject to conditions, and consideration will be made based on your submitted application form.
All participants will be enrolled on the MA course but may choose to opt out at the Postgraduate Certificate or Postgraduate Diploma stage. Study is undertaken at Masters (level 7) throughout. All programmes are in English language for instructions and assessment. The course is designed so that assignments can be built into the working practice, and to maximise impact on standards of teaching, leadership and management in education. All modules are based upon gaining knowledge of best practice through research and literature, implementing this and researching the effect or impact. Participants are encouraged to focus assignments on identified institutional and personal needs and to use practitioner action enquiry and reflective practice as a learning model.
As the programme is at postgraduate level, the expectation is that participants will work independently and take responsibility for their own progress on studies. Careers The course is designed to enable participants to enhance their career development. Many participants gain promotions. Others use evidence collected from the assignments as evidence for enhanced practice when applying for new posts. Participants report a close connection between what they have studied and how their practice has improved. The MA Education is not a route into teaching and does not award qualified teacher status (QTS) in Mauritius or UK.
