Receiving praise from friends, family and tutors is all very well. But it doesn’t compare with receiving independent commendation from your peers in the industry. In 2013, final year photography student Michelle Amosu learnt how that felt. She was awarded a prize in the photography section of the influential D&AD Student Awards, in collaboration with the style magazine ‘Dazed & Confused’. Michelle was awarded the ‘Best of year’ accolade after a detailed critique by a high profile panel of judges. Her photo, a contemporary social documentary portrait in urban London, was selected from thousands of applicants. The award-winning photograph met the brief to ‘create a portrait of contemporary youth’. “It’s amazing to be recognised by such a respected design organisation,” she said. “I’m really happy to know that my work is considered to be industry standard.”

Shifting from the lecture hall to the cut and thrust of Wall Street can happen quicker than you might think. German student Nadja Schwichtenberg graduated with a BA International Business degree and soon secured a job in one of the world’s leading financial service providers, Deutsche Bank. Nadja gained a place on the prestigious Mountbatten Internship programme as a Junior Project Manager, based at the bank’s Wall Street branch in New York. She chose Middlesex because her course studied finance in action, not ‘dry theories’. “I enjoyed the variety of the different modules and industry-related case studies,” she said. “The Business School makes sure that the learned theory is connected with actual events and companies. I was very proud to be accepted onto the Mountbatten programme and to work for Deutsche Bank. My First Class Honours degree from Middlesex University was instrumental in gaining the opportunity.”

As Rachel Williams searched for a university, she had a clear idea of the career she wanted to follow. “I had ambitions of working for the Red Cross and Doctors without Borders. Middlesex was the only university to offer the European Nursing degree, including a European placement, which I felt would better prepare me for professional practice on qualifying.” As part of the training, Rachel attended the University of Malta and played an active role in the accident & emergency, cardiac surgical and intensive care departments of the Mater Dei teaching hospital. “I became a valuable member of the team,” she recalls. “The placement was challenging but incredibly rewarding, and I’d recommend the experience to anyone.” Rachel hasn’t looked back since. “For me, Middlesex was a great place to train as a nurse. The opportunities after graduating are endless.”

The cameras on a mobile phone are great for recording a special moment. But for attempting professional studio shots – surely you need something much bigger? Not any more. Middlesex student Chris Whellams, a 21-year-old product design student, has invented a gadget called ‘Snap’ that allows smartphone owners to take creative photos with greater depth and shadow. “Mobile photography has become part of everyday life capturing everyday things because of its accessibility and ease of use, ” said Chris. “So I thought why not make a normal photo special with the use of external lighting to create further character?” Chris unveiled Snap at the University art and design show and he will develop it further during a postgraduate internship in our innovation centre redLoop. He plans to bring his invention to market in the near future. Did anyone say Dragons’ Den?

Our campus

Undergraduate Guide 2015

Our campus

We’ve realised our ambition to create the best university campus experience in London. We say ‘experience’ because we believe that a campus should be more than mere buildings. It should be a vibrant environment where all members of the university community come together to achieve their individual ambitions. On a single site in north London, we’ve designed a place where people from diverse disciplines, countries and cultures can share their university lives and shape their futures.

Learning places Art, design and media centre Our new Grove building, independently recognised for world-class design features, is the UK’s largest investment in creative industries education. Along with a Sony-equipped TV studio and a huge exhibition and events space, it has digital media labs, photographic studios, digital and traditional dark rooms and more. Health and science laboratories Our new hi-fi simulation labs allow nursing students to practice new skills on ‘Sim Man’, a life-like dummy. In our Hatchcroft building, our modern labs demonstrate our commitment to world class science teaching and research for our biomedical and psychology students.

Library We provide 900 open-access study places, 500 open-access IT work stations and dedicated group working spaces in this modern building.

Social places Rickett Quadrangle This large space under a magnificent glass roof is the ideal place to meet up with friends, relax with a coffee or stop for lunch. Proving that academic life and social life go hand-inhand at Middlesex, lecture theatres and IT laboratories surround the central atrium. The Forum With food outlets, bar, pool tables and a dedicated stage area, this is a great space to relax and unwind. It’s also home to our on-site gym, the Fitness Pod, which has top-of-therange fitness equipment, and exercise studio.

Local places We’re in Hendon, a thriving, cosmopolitan district of north London a short Underground ride from the centre. The area has extensive parkland and a good range of cafes and restaurants. The nearby Brent Cross Shopping Centre has over a hundred stores.

Performing arts studios Our dedicated performing arts building features rehearsal studios, costume and prop workshops and a flexible performance space. The innovative Grove building features new dance studios and music rehearsal rooms.

REGINA KYULE KENYA BA BUSINESS MANAGEMENT ¡

Studying in a foreign country is an exciting and challenging experience. That’s why we provide you with friendly support at each stage of your journey; helping you to prepare for your departure and making you feel at home when you arrive in London. On arrival you’ll receive a warm welcome before embarking on a fun and informative orientation programme to help you settle in and adjust to life at Middlesex. When Regina Kyule arrived in London from her native Kenya, it was her first time outside Africa. She was scared moving to a new city on her own, but quickly settled into life at Middlesex, receiving lots of support and making new friends. “My first day here I was so freaked out. But Middlesex had so many activities planned for students in the first week, there was no way I was going to be left by myself. I met so many new people, from all over the world. I’ve made so many good friends at Middlesex, I’d say lifetime friends – they’re like my family now. “I love the way there is always so much support available to you at Middlesex. The library is open 24 hours a day and the lecturers and tutors are so helpful and always available to you. You can always turn to them and ask for help if you have difficulties.” Hear more from Regina and watch other international students share their experiences: www.mdx.ac.uk/international-stories

Money matters

Undergraduate Guide 2015

Money matters Funding your university years is an important consideration for all students, so we provide impartial step-by-step advice to set you on the best path. Tuition fees are payable by most students studying for a degree, diploma or certificate, however we also offer a comprehensive package of loans, grants and scholarships to ensure that money is no object to you realising your ambitions.

Tuition fees Tuition fee rates are dependent on your course, country of nationality, residency and on the level of your previous study. For up-todate information about fees, visit www.mdx.ac.uk/ugfees Support with tuition fees for UK and EU students Most full-time UK and EU students, as well as most part-time students who complete a minimum of 25% of the full time course per year, will be eligible for a tuition fee loan, which means you will not need to pay your tuition fees upfront. Your loan will cover the fees and will be repayable once you have graduated and are earning over a certain threshold. Find out more about tuition fee loans at www.mdx.ac.uk/ugfees

56 | Middlesex University

Funding for international students Each year we grant a number of scholarships and merit awards to international students. Eligibility and funding is assessed on a caseby-case basis, and if successful, the award is deducted from your tuition fees. Your nearest regional office can provide more information on any funding you may be eligible for and guide you through the application process.

Other funding sources for international students You should check with the Ministry of Education in your home country to see what funding may be available to you from your own government. International students can also apply to the British Government and a variety of private agencies and charities for scholarships, bursaries and grants to study in the UK. For more information contact your nearest regional office, or visit the British Council website www.britishcouncil.org or the Council for International Education www.ukcisa.org.uk Scholarships For UK, EU and international students we have a number of privately funded Middlesex scholarships, awards and prize funds. Find out more by visiting www.mdx.ac.uk/scholarships

Support with living costs for UK and EU students Grants and loans to help with living costs are available for eligible full-time students. A non-repayable maintenance grant is normally available to UK students only who come from low and medium income families. The amount you receive will depend on your personal circumstances and the income of your family. Mature students may be eligible for grants based on their own personal circumstances. Eligible UK and EU students may also apply for a maintenance loan, which is repayable.

Work based learning Work based learning is an innovative way of studying that integrates university-level learning in the workplace whether you are in full-time, part-time or voluntary employment. Each course is tailored to provide professional development at the same time as contributing to your organisation’s objectives. Why follow the work based learning route? Academic recognition for your previous work experience makes it an attractive option if you are already well established in a professional field. Work based learning also provides a means of topping up existing qualifications to a full honours degree. How does it work? Courses are delivered through our virtual learning environment so you can gain your degree without having to attend the University in person. You will have a specialist work based learning academic advisor who will support you throughout your course, in addition to your subject specialist advisor, who will support you during your project modules. See www.mdx.ac.uk/prof or email business@mdx.ac.uk for more information. Our courses include: // BA/BSc (Hons) Professional Practice or Work Based Learning Studies // FdA/FdSc Professional Practice or Work Based Learning Studies // UniCert/CertHE/UniDip/Higher Diploma/ Grad Cert/AdDip/GradDip Professional Practice or Work Based Learning Studies

// BSc/BA Professional Practice Maritime // BA Honours Professional Practice (Arts) // Higher Apprenticeship/Higher Diploma in Care Leadership and Management

You will need to be in work and/or professional practice prior to and during your proposed course.
